His Last Shot

Rate this book
In the game of love, she is HIS LAST SHOT.

Everyone loves the tall, funny, successful, and ridiculously handsome pool shark, Johnny Givens. He’s the guy every woman wants. So why hasn’t he found the one? At forty-five years old, he’s tired of the dating scene, tired of not clicking with any woman that crosses his path.

He’s over it.

Rachel Garcia hopes for a better life, but for now, she bartends at her overbearing Uncle Dexter’s bar. And as for love, she has a few rules. No dating customers, no dating older men. Sounds simple enough. Yet, it’s the rheumatoid arthritis she’s battled since childhood that makes everything feel so difficult and hopeless. Why would anyone stick around long term? Chronic illness isn’t something you expect to deal with at the age of thirty.

Life is so unfair.

Then Johnny happens. He’s a customer, fifteen years older, and everything she doesn’t want. As luck would have it, she’s forced to see a lot of him when he joins the local pool league at Dexter’s. Now, nothing is ever the same. With her heart or her life.

Johnny is smitten. Sparks fly, and chemistry erupts unlike anything he’s ever felt before. Dates spent stargazing with her are the building blocks to the love story he has always desired. If only it were that simple. Rachel’s insecurities, a dangerous uncle who runs an illegal gambling ring, and an ex-fiancé who wants her back, all threaten to destroy Johnny’s last shot at love.

To quote myself, “If you don’t write a book giving me Johnnys story, I will riot.” THANKS ELAINE!!!

No one has been waiting to read Johnnys story longer than me (literally) and it truly did not disappoint. The age gap, the slow burn, the LONGING ugh everything was perfect. The heart of this story is Johnny and Rachel’s romance, but the sinister reasons keeping them apart kept me completely hooked.

The setting is so unique and will provide a fresh story for readers of the genre. I highly recommend!!

Thank you to the author for the gifted ARC & beta read

I've never read a book about pool , but this book was so good. My husband played pool for a very long time and ended up in the hall of fame. Because of that, this book is so special. Johnny is a 45 old who renovates a bar and it is there he sees her, Rachel. She's the beautiful younger (30) bartender/waitress. He was completely enthralled with her, she was not so much. They had people trying to get in between them, many instances that could have come between them. I loved seeing how they communicated, and made decisions that were for the best. Even if it wasn't best for them.
Johnny was so caring, helpful and totally smitten. When Rachel's RA acted up he was there to help with whatever he could do.
You will feel so many emotions while reading this story. Happiness, frustration and even downright anger when the toxic family member gets involved. My favorite part was how it ends. It is chef's kiss 💋 thank you Elaine Evans for the ARC I can't wait to read more of her books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ARC Review

This one surprised me—in a good way! His Last Shot is more than just a steamy age-gap romance (though yes, Johnny is very swoon-worthy). It dives into real issues like chronic illness, insecurity, and learning to let someone in when life feels like it’s already stacked against you.

I really connected with Rachel—her struggles felt authentic, and her no-nonsense attitude made it that much more satisfying to watch her fall for Johnny. Their chemistry is fire, and I loved how emotionally grounded he was. Plus, there’s some fun suspense and drama woven in (illegal gambling and a clingy ex—what more do you need?).

Also, this was my first book involving any kind of sport, and while I’ve never been into playing pool myself, I actually found the pool scenes really interesting. The way it was woven into the story added a cool layer to Johnny’s character and made their world feel more real.

A few moments felt a little over the top, but overall, this was a heartfelt, engaging read with characters I rooted for the whole way through. Definitely recommend for anyone who enjoys second chances and emotionally complex love stories.

Who knew a cue stick and a felt table could be this sexy?

His Last Shot
By Elaine Evans
Publish Date: 05/27/2025
Genres: Rom-Com, Small-Town Romance

I’ll never look at the game of pool the same way again. Two pages in, Elaine has the male main character explaining pool in a way that feels almost sensual. This book had me laughing one minute and crying the next. I was completely hooked from the start and finished it in just three days (it would’ve been sooner, but you know—life). It was emotional, sexy, relatable, and moving.

Let’s talk characters: Rachel is the female main character, and she’s so relatable. I loved that she had RA and still struggled to believe she could achieve her dreams—especially when the people around her didn’t support her. Then in walks Johnny. He’s caring, loyal, handsome… honestly, he gives major golden retriever energy. Happy-go-lucky, but don’t mess with his people.

Tropes you’ll love:
• Small-town romance (think cozy bars and everyone knowing everyone)
• Age gap (one of my faves!)
• Black cat/golden retriever dynamic (instead of the usual grumpy/sunshine)

The banter? Effortlessly flirty and full of charm. I caught myself smiling constantly, rooting for Johnny as he chipped away at Rachel’s walls. Their conversations felt natural, and the dialogue was so good I could feel Rachel letting her guard down. Johnny was protective, supportive, and deeply genuine.

Right from the start, I could tell the characters had depth—even when they tried to play it cool. My favorite emotional arc was Rachel’s. She started out believing her RA would hold her back, but over time, she realized that with true support, she could live the life she always dreamed of. She also grew in love—her heartbreak and the controlling grip of her uncle had taught her to fear vulnerability, but Johnny helped her rewrite what love could be.

And Johnny? A self-proclaimed serial dater (which honestly felt like a fair concern when Rachel asked if he was a serial killer—he’s that attractive and kind). But Rachel made him lose that swagger a bit. Around her, he had to be real. And he was.

This book was amazing—down to the last word. But let me just show you the line that changed how I see pool forever:

“I chalk my cue, carefully eyeing the pool balls, stalking them as if they were my prey.”

Guys. That’s HOT.

If you love a happily ever after that doesn’t come easy, this book is for you. It’s a little dramatic (because romance!), but it’s also deeply honest—touching on real insecurities and emotional growth that made it feel so authentic.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I mean every word.

I have never read a book centered around the game of pool before and I now feel like I was missing out. When I was about 11 a family member ran a bar and grill type restaurant and I remember going and playing pool. I was never good but it’s a memory I think about often so this book brought me so much joy. Johnny is 45 and Rachel is 15 years younger. I love a good age gap. The moment Johnny lays eyes on Rachel there was nobody else who could even compare. Even if there were people trying to keep them apart. Rachel however didn’t think a relationship with Johnny was even possible. Seeing these two work through things and how caring Johnny was towards Rachel was so sweet. Not to mention Johnny is so understanding and just there for her whenever she needed him 🥹 Rachel fights daily with her RA and seeing the support she had within Johnny was truly the sweetest. I was crying on one page and a few pages after I was giggling like an idiot. You will feel ALL the emotions reading this book. Then you also get family drama with a toxic family member. He is a piece of work 😡 I loved seeing how it all played out in the end. Oh and one of the best parts is seeing characters from Elaine’s previous two books 😍 I highly suggest reading her other two books. I already can’t wait for whatever she writes next. Thank you Elaine Evans for this fantastic romance book. Johnny and Rachel are true soulmates💕

This was such a wonderful breath of fresh air. A clean, closed-door romance written with such depth. I loved the characters (most of them anyway..there is a particular one you will not enjoy as well), and Elaine also chose to give the FMC rheumatoid arthritis. I love that she did that..it was so educational for me & gave me so much more compassion toward those who struggle with the horrible disease on a regular basis.

Highly recommend this one!

Wow. I absolutely LOVED this book!!!

I had the privilege of being an ARC reader (my sincerest apologies it's taken me so long to review).

The character development was so good 😍
- Rachel's hesitation towards Johnny, or even just the idea of Johnny, seemed very realistic and completely understandable. The more you learn about her, the more you love her. I love how she finally finds her voice, something that has been lost for way too long.
- And Johnny... what an amazing (hot) guy. So patient, so kind, so understanding. The ability to make a girl who feels like a burden finally understand her worth is something very endearing.
- The OBGs - what a genuinely amazing and supportive group of people to have in your corner.
- Dexter... Or should I say Dex... I've never hated a character more!! His personality is just awful and I seriously wanted to strangle him on more than one occasion. Great job making such a hateable character 😂😂

The story development and timeline was great!! It didn't move too fast or slow, and I love how Johnny and Rachel were able to see each other despite the circumstances they were forced into. Even tho time had passed, they were just as crazy about each other as they were before.

This was truly an amazing book and I highly recommend it!!!

This book! Ended up not being what I expected with a plot twist due to the evilness of one man that I did not expect and made me so mad and heartbroken but I still loved the book!

So many things to love:
- he knows what he wants and pursues her and respects her
- chronic illness Rep
- he loves fancy coffees!
- found family
- there’s instant chemistry and attraction but not instalove
- “who made you cry?”
- “I’ve never been one to shy away from the truth and I will not start today” 😍😍😍

The pacing of this book was so different than a lot of what I normally read and I loved that.

Content: closed door, a bit of language and Lord’s name in vain quite a bit

I had the absolute joy and honor of reading an advanced reader copy of this book, and I can’t think the author enough for allowing me to dive back into the world that started in Becoming Mallory. Ever since reading the first book, Johnny’s character has stayed with me - layered, quietly strong, and so deserving of a story of his own. And let me tell you, this book delivers!

Getting to finally follow, Johnny’s journey felt like reuniting with an old friend. The emotional depth, the warmth, the gentle moments of hope - all gave me those wonderful warm fuzzies I didn’t even know I needed. But it wasn’t all soft edges and comfort - there was just enough suspense, woven in to keep me on the edge of my seat, wondering if Johnny would finally find the happiness he’s long deserved. The emotional stakes felt real, the pacing was spot on, and the writing was as beautiful as ever.

This story struck a perfect balance between nostalgia and newness, letting Johnny shine through in his own right while staying true to the world I fell in love with in Becoming Mallory. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves a character driven story that tugs at your heart and keeps you turning pages.

Bravo to Elaine for crafting such a meaningful continuation. Johnny’s story was everything I hope for - and more.

Thank you Elaine for the ARC!

I have never read a romance centered on the game of pool, and I don't know much about it so definitely a different vibe than what I am use to.

Overall I enjoyed the storyline, and the drama the crooked uncle provided to the storyline.

I loved this small town romance! It was different and unique which I loved. & I got to learn a bit about pool.
Rachel is stuck in the day to day life with her families business but deep down she wants more. Johnny is definitely a golden retriever that is encouraging and just what Rachel needs but they have a big road bump that’s standing in between their happiness! I would definitely pick it up to find out!

🎱Age Gap but make it in the 30s & 40s I loved every bit of it!
👩‍⚕️ RA (rheumatoid arthritis) awareness
🎱 Inta attraction
👩‍⚕️ Small Town
🎱 Found Family

Oh Johnny Givens how I craved to read his story! I love how the author, Elaine weaves little snippets from her other books into each book and I could not wait to read allll about Johnny.

Tropes:

🎱 Slow Burn
🎱 Age Gap
🎱 Small Town
🎱 Golden retriever/cinnamon roll MMC

The opening scene is so classically sexy 🥵 I felt all the feels while reading this book. Laughing one minute, tearing up the next, cheering on Johnny, rooting for Rachel, angry at some familial drama. The banter is witty and charming! I absolutely love the RA rep and how it was written. I felt a bit connected to the characters in different ways and found myself wanting to meet these people in real life and walk in this town, which is always a 5 star for me. If you love a slow burn HEA, this book is for you!

Thank you Elaine for the honor of ARC and Beta reading, you are true gem to the book community 💛

ARC review
"His Last Shot” by Elaine Evans is a gripping mix of romance, resilience, and self-discovery. It pulled me in with its emotional depth and heartwarming moments.

The main characters are Johnny and Rachel.
Johnny is a middle-aged man who loves pool but struggles with relationships.
Rachel is a woman living with rheumatoid arthritis, and her journey is both raw and powerful.

Johnny is raw and authentic—I really appreciated how the author portrayed his genuine concern and care for Rachel’s condition.
Also, it’s so funny how he keeps calling Dexter “Dex” and Dexter always corrects him like, “It’s Dexter!” but Johnny never listens😂

At first, I found Rachel to be like one of those annoying FMCs, but as the story progressed, I began to understand her more and connect with her journey.

I love how the author captures the emotional highs and lows of Johnny and Rachel’s journey, making you feel every win and loss. The pacing was steady, allowing those emotional moments to land without feeling rushed. The writing is both touching and compelling.

Overall, His Last Shot is a beautifully crafted story about overcoming obstacles and finding love in unexpected places. It’s a book I didn’t know I needed, but I’m so glad I got to read it.
I highly recommend it to fans of romance and stories of personal triumph.
4.2/5⭐ from me!

This was a romance that turned wild at the end hahaha. This was my first pool romance. Was a quick read too.

I absolutely love Johnny. He is all the green flags and so down bad. He truly went all the way out for Rachel. His pov was my favorite.

The side characters were amazing. I love the OBG’s, Scott and Laura plus Mallory. These side characters brought so much love to the story. They were the true definition of family always having your back.

Rachel was the 2nd main pov. I didn’t like her or feel connected to her. She is 30 but acts 20. She treated Johnny like crap and never deserved him. I’m happy by the end of the story she changed but I am really only happy for Johnny that she changed.

I am so glad I was chosen to be on the ARC team for this book! We should all be so lucky to have a love like Johnny and Rachel!!! I liked this book so much, that before I even finished it, I stopped and ordered Elaine's other books! Initially I was intrigued by the book because the FMC has rheumatoid arthritis like I do. This is one those books you'll be eager to keep reading and dreading it coming to an end. It has all the feels 🙌

ARC Reader: 4.5 Stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I enjoyed reading it from the first page all the way to last page and was wanting more! This is the first book I have read from the Author and I like her writing style, planning to read others she has published!

**Spoilers
I am someone who suffers with autoimmune diseases and the author tackled RA beautifully, explaining the difficulties of normal everyday activities, and wanting to strive to do more in life but having the nagging feeling that your diseases run your life and it is not possible.

This is my first "pool" romance and I loved it. I really like the MMC and his patience for the FMC. Reminded me a lot of my own husband caring for my health issues.

If you want a good read with both a great MMC and FMC, please read this book :)

This was an E ARC review and a new to me author.
This book was a clean romance which I typically don't read but the title and cover looked interesting so I gave it a chance and so glad I did. It was very well written and I loved Johnny and Rachel. I loved how patient he was with her and their relationship and it wasnt all about the s$x and he was truly in it for her.
Thank you Elaine for giving me this opportunity.

His Last Shot is a small town, age gap romance and is the story of Johnny and Rachel.

Johhny is a lovable older man (45) who has looking for "the one" but has never had that connection with the women he has met. A great uncle and charming man who wants nothing more than to have a family of his own. He has spent his life playing pool and after his company does renovations at Dexter's Bar, Johhny meets Rachel, one of the bartenders and Dexter's niece. Rachel is guarded due to a few bad relationships and her chronic rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. When Johnny sees Rachel across the bar, he is drawn to her but Rachel does not date older men or customers. As a means to get closer to Rachel, Johnny joins the pool league at Dexter's even though he does not trust Rachel's uncle but being close to her is worth the risk.

This book is a closed door romance full of funny banter, emotional depth, twists, turns and so much longing and patience. Johnny is a good man who makes it his life's mission to prove to Rachel that he is the man for her, no matter the time or distance. Rachel has a lot of emotional baggage to sort through from her previous relationships and how her chronic disease impacted those relationships and how she sees herself. While I understand her hesitance with Johnny due to her condition (I have an autoimmune disease), I think the rejections she gave him were unrealistic and is drew the book out a little. Once Rachel realized she could have a great love and that she was making herself more miserable, she was able to get out of her own way and let Johnny in.

I absolutely recommend this book to lover's of all types of romance books but know that there is no open door spice, there are some elements of criminal activity but nothing too dark but in all this is a great story that made me tear up at the end and enjoy the very hard fought HEA that Johnny and Rachel deserve.

ARC read: 4.0 🌟

I have never enjoyed playing pool, but if Johnny Givens was offering lessons, I'd be there in a heartbeat! 😍

Both Johnny and Rachel were dynamic and nuanced characters who I felt were fleshed out really well and had their own unique voices when switching between POVs. And while they were great separately, they really shone whenever they were in a scene together. The love they shared radiated off the page and made me long for a relationship like theirs. I loved the RA representation and Rachel's struggle with it was never brushed aside when it might hinder the plot, but instead handled in a very realistic manner. It was great to see.

Why I gave it 4 stars is that the first half did get a little repetitive at times. I know there has to be a bit of a "will they, won't they" but it was the same few beats getting in the way without much variation. Though the payoff and the moment of the big reveal was ABSOLUTELY worth it and wonderfully romantic, the journey there dragged slightly.

However, any hesitations I had about the first half were quickly brushed aside by the second half and, more specifically, the last 30% or so.

This story gave me everything I hoped for and surprised me with everything I didn’t know I needed. The age gap romance? Done perfectly. Johnny is, without a doubt, the most caring, attentive, and patient man I’ve ever read about. And Rachel, the woman he falls for, is someone he’s completely devoted to. While he was initially drawn to her, it was never just about physical attraction. Johnny was in it for the long haul, and wow, did he prove it.

Rachel, having had her heart broken more than once and dealing with a tough medical diagnosis, is understandably hesitant, not just about the age gap, but also about the fact that Johnny is a regular (non-drinking!) customer at the bar where she works. But Johnny slowly breaks down every one of her walls. He brings hope, love, and confidence back into her life. Honestly, this man is everything.

And just when you think the romance is enough to keep you hooked, in comes the manipulative and threatening uncle, who throws down an ultimatum that could tear everything apart!

This book takes you on a ride...from smiling at the chemistry and banter to tearing up at the heartbreak and obstacles they face. Johnny has definitely earned a place on my list of favorite book boyfriends for a long time to come!

Honestly Goodreads, we need a 6 star option. Specifically for this book, thank you so much 🙏🏻

I thought I would devour this book - and I did, but I SAVORED it, reading it slowly and intentionally because while I wanted to eat it up, I wanted to spend as much time as possible with these characters I love so much 🥹. I thought the main setting being Dexters was really fun, and I’m obsessed with the OBGs, everyone needs their own version of OBGs 💙. The story felt so smooth, I was in a chokehold, when I wasn’t reading I wanted to be. The communication, love, silliness, and the sprinkled in cross references from other books was amazing. If you’ve not read any of Elaine’s book, give yourself some self love and care and curl up with a cozy blanket, snack, and crack open one of her books 📚 🤌🏻

Like Johnny, my dad taught me to play pool when I was around the age of 7 and I fell in love. I’ve never seen a pool table I didn’t play on 🙂‍↕️ 🎱 and while I don’t have RA I do have osteoarthritis and felt seen be everything Rachel thought and felt, and my heart swelled reading this knowing all the references and RA representation came from Sammie. (I love you girl). I remember a couple years ago researching trying to help her find books with RA rep and there really weren’t all too many! Elaine I remember when you first started writing and I’m so happy you kept going, you did such a beautiful job with their story, as with everyone else’s. Delaney thank you for threatening to riot 😂

Love love love this book 🥰

I was first introduced to Evans' writing when I read, All In, a few months ago, so when I heard she had this new book coming out, I knew I HAD to get my hands on it.
I've never read a pool (league) romance, but I am down for more. I'm going to need someone to lift me up and put me on a felt table and kiss me like Johnny kisses Rachel.
We are introduced with Rachel who has RA (way to go for the representation) whose family consists of her uncle Dexter and her brother Micah. Her uncle brought her and her brother in once their parents died. All she's ever known is working at the bar that her uncle owns, dealing with her RA flareups and making those around her happy. She's a yes-man... but what happens when she means dreamy Johnny? Well, he helps her discover herself and that she can do anything she wants, like apply for nursing school and standing up for herself, especially against her oddly possessive uncle. You follow their love story with star gazing, pool lessons, hanging out with Johnnys wonderful family, and more, and gosh, they're so stinking cute it hurts! But what makes this book so unique is that the HEA wasn't easy, it had to be worked for and took YEARS to achieve. I refuse to give away the twist, but just know I knew something was up, but didn't know it was that deep.
This book was everything I needed right now, laughter, heartache, suspense, giddy kicking my feet & more. You absolutely need to pick up your copy of His Last Shot when it's released May 27, 2025!
Cannot say thank you enough to Elaine Evans for this e-ARC! She is the kindest, most down-to-earth author out there.

I can never and I repeat NEVER look at the game of pool the same ever again, the way the author described the game of pool just feels so sensual, I have never played the game of pool before but I really wanted to do it but only if my instructor is as awesome Johnny of course

I loved Johnny and Rachel's romance, they were honestly such an amazing couple, I loved how Johnny slowly slowly chipped at the walls that Rachel made around herself until Rachel finally surrendered and let Johnny in her heart

I loved how loving, caring and supportive Johnny was of Rachel, it was amazing to read how Johnny supported Rachel through ups and downs of her RA and how he always put her consent over everything and always pushed her to achieve her dreams

It was on of the most amazing books that I have ever read, everything in this book was impeccably written, Johnny and Rachel's romance, their flirting, their banter everything

And not only Johnny and Rachel, I loved the other characters of the books too, all the characters were amazing and had an amazing depth

It was amazing to read the sizzling romance between Johnny and Rachel with their age gap and the sinister reason that was keeping them apart and all the other characters and their development in Johnny and Rachel's story and especially Johnny's contribution in Rachel's development

Overall this book is an amazing read

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*

I rate it a 3.5-4. love how Johnny (the mmc) is genuinely a good guy and has manners that don’t seem out of character like making sure she gets to the freeway safely after their date, ugh precious. I love that he’s also 45 and still star gazes, it seems like such a teenage thing to do but there no age limit for those kinds of things. Such pureness. He wasn’t in it for the s*x, he was in it for her. I didn’t like the reaction Rachel had (the mfc) towards finding out about her uncles “visit”. She was all like no biggie that his was an ass, like girl, not cool. Rachel kinda got annoying at times, like this homeboy has done everything for you and you’re like nah, ugh! lol. I appreciate that authors are adding more relatable characters in their stories and Rachel’s health representation was nice, I’m just thankful it didn’t end in like a walk to remember moment, that was too much haha. I do love the pool part, I love playing pool, it was a cool addition for a book. It does have a happy ending thank goodness haha, there was a lot of tug and pull on my heart.

Thank you for letting me read it!

Beautifully written in a realistic and relatible way. I received an advanced copy of the book and while traditional romance stories are not what I normally read (yes, I wanted to go outside my norm), I so loved this book.

Rachel is so down to earth that she could literally be one of my friends. I love the the author Elaine Evans did an amazing job of incorporating Rachels feelings of being diagnosed with what some would call a crippling disease. This diagnosis makes Rachel question the life that she can have.

The MMC, Johnny, all I can say is "oh my". I'll take one of him for Christmas. This man makes me want to play pool every day. However, it was his genuineness and his sincerity when it came to Rachel that really sealed the deal for me. The combination of them together was magical. I feel like Rachel really pulled out the real person that Johnny was. He couldn't play the games that he was so used to playing with other females with Rachel.

I love that you see Johnny and Tachel grow individually and also together. After all isn't that what romance does to you? From someone who doesn't read traditional romance books like this, I 110% recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this!
Everyone needs a Johnson Michael Givens in their life
He’s every girl’s dream - caring, considerate, romantic, and head over heels in love with the girl.
I loved his and Rachel’s relationship. Despite its hurdles, it’s sweet and refreshing.

I know zero things about pool 😂 and I’m not really even a “sports romance” person. Like at all.
But! That was not an issue for this book! The game of pool is a huge plot point in this story, yes, but the way Elaine writes it… it’s natural, not over done or complicated. I was never wishing for the “pages about pool” to be over. It flowed nicely, and just felt like an element of the story, not a book about playing pool.

I also loved the nods to Elaine’s previous books. I was an ARC reader for “All In” and loved seeing Sam, Ricky, and Big C pop up in this story!
I have not read her first book yet “Becoming Mallory” (it’s on my list!! I just haven’t gotten to it yet!). There were a lot more characters from that story apart of this one, but again, that wasn’t an issue! I was never confused, and this story stands on its on just fine! It did make me more excited to read “Becoming Mallory” though! Especially with how adorable Mallory is as a child in “His Last Shot.”

Elaine Evans delivers an unforgettable romance in His Last Shot—a story that’s equal parts heartache, healing, and heat. From the very first page, I was drawn in by her emotionally rich writing and the undeniable chemistry between the leads. This isn’t just a sports romance—it’s a beautifully layered story about second chances, personal growth, and the kind of love that lingers long after the final whistle.

Evans crafts characters who are deeply flawed yet impossible not to root for. Their struggles felt authentic, and their connection pulsed with tension and tenderness. I especially appreciated how the story balanced angst with moments of hope and quiet vulnerability. It’s rare to find a romance that hits both the emotional and romantic beats this well.

His Last Shot was my introduction to Elaine Evans, and I’m already lining up the rest of her backlist. If you love complex characters, emotional depth, and slow-burning chemistry wrapped in a sports setting, this book deserves a spot on your TBR.

Thank you to the author for the ARC of the book. My opinions are my own and I was not influenced to write a review.

This book delivered everything I love in a romance; emotional depth, a well-written age gap (my personal favorite trope), and a slow-burn connection that felt both earned and intimate. Rachel is living with rheumatoid arthritis, and her quiet strength and vulnerability tugged at my heart from the start. Watching her open up, not just to love, but to the idea that she’s worthy of it, was moving.
Then there’s Johnny. Older, steady, and unexpectedly tender, he’s the kind of hero who doesn’t try to “fix” Rachel but meets her where she is. His gentle patience and fierce protectiveness had me swooning. The chemistry between them simmers for chapters, but when it finally ignites? Totally worth the wait.
Elaine Evans treats chronic illness and emotional trauma with sensitivity, while still giving us a romance full of hope, heat, and healing. Their found family backdrop adds warmth and charm, grounding the love story in something deeply real.
If you love age-gap romances where care and consent are just as sexy as tension and spice, this book is a must-read.

Then, he speaks. “I desire to be consumed by you.”
Whoa.
He continues, still facing the door. “I want you to overwhelm, complicate, and burn through my life and everything in it. My thoughts, my future … everything. Nothing has ever compared to you.”

♡♡♡

A sweet and heartwarming read overall. I especially loved the epilogue—it wrapped things up in such a satisfying way. That said, I’m not a big fan of time leaps, and this book had quite a few, but I sucked it up for Johnny. At times, the story felt a bit overdramatic, which pulled me out of it here and there, but it still managed to hold my interest. It didn’t exceed my expectations, but it was an okay read if you’re looking for something light and emotional with a feel-good ending.

“Scott, there is just something about Rachel.” He faces me, brow furrowed. “I can’t put my finger on it. It’s just … something.”
This brings a smile to his face. “I get it. Laura has the something.”

Just two men discussing the love of their lives..
