Gothic Magic & Hemlock Inheritance is book six in The Enchanted woods Cottagecore Collection.
For fans of forbidden love, fated mates, and gothic magic, Gothic Magic & Hemlock Inheritance is an unputdownable tale of love and destiny.
This very Gothic tale is the story of Cinnamon (CiCi), who discovers after years in the care system, that she is the heir to the Hartfield estate upon the death of her father. Upon arriving in Havenmoor, she discovers that she is also the daughter of Victoria Shantly - a forbidden crossing of bloodlines that has created CiCi, a hybrid vampire mage. What follows is a fight for CiCi to prove that she is worthy of sitting in the Hartfield seat on the Council, when the top families wish desperately for her to be eradicated. And then there's Hunter, her late father's assistant, to whom she feels an incredible pull - but he is supposed to be getting engaged to a member of one of those top families. Can CiCi prove herself, and what will come of her and Hunter's attraction?
This is a dark and twisty novel, fast paced, and very unpredictable. CiCi is a character you root for, she's strong, with a lot of fight in her, and she adapts well to the circumstances she finds herself in. Hunter is brooding and dark, the antithesis to the light that CiCi brings, forming the crux of their relationship. Their bond is fated, and endures despite their attempts to subvert it at the beginning. Whilst they are the focus of the novel, the importance of the supporting characters cannot be denied - they bring conflict, love and danger, as well as context and understanding, both for the characters and the reader. It is beautifully written, in some places more like a narrative poem than a novel. That being said, the ending felt rushed, with several threads left dangling, but not enough to seemingly lead on to a sequel. I need answers to the Eliza dilemma, and exactly what the relevancy is of the Apothecary to the Council. Also... the Circle - they were introduced and then left to rot, when there seemed to be so much potential plot input. All in all it was an enjoyable novel, but the ending left me a little bemused.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
Thank you Kristy Perkins for sending me an eARC of this lovely book!
“Bound by blood, cursed by fate—will love be her salvation or her undoing?”
In Gothic Magic & Hemlock Inheritance, Kristy Perkins delivers an intoxicating blend of atmosphere, yearning, and magic that lingers like mist over a haunted moor. This isn’t just a romance—it’s a rich, shadow-drenched tapestry of forbidden love, ancestral curses, and long-buried secrets clawing their way to the surface.
Cinnamon Hartfield, a hybrid of two ancient rival bloodlines—witch and vampire—returns to the eerie village of Havenmoor to claim her inheritance: a crumbling estate laced with hemlock and history. Perkins crafts her with strength and vulnerability in equal measure; Cinnamon is powerful but fractured, cursed by a legacy not entirely her own. Her internal struggle feels palpable, almost mythic, as if she’s one with the fog that curls through the twisted woods.
Enter Hunter Dravenmoor—a necromancer mage with a name as heavy as his fate. He is Cinnamon’s fated match, yet everything about their union is forbidden. The tension between them simmers with aching inevitability. Perkins writes their slow-burn connection with poetic elegance, never rushing but always drawing you closer to the edge. Every shared glance and whispered promise thrums with danger and desire.
But the true star of this novel is its atmosphere. The setting is pure gothic decadence: mist-shrouded forests, moonlit rituals, velvet-dark rooms lit by flickering candlelight. The sense of place is so strong, it feels like Havenmoor itself is a character—watchful, ancient, and not entirely welcoming. Perkins weaves these threads with mastery, drawing clear inspiration from classic gothic literature while layering in a modern voice that never breaks the spell.
Themes of inheritance, identity, and defiance against prophecy run deep here. Perkins doesn’t just lean on tropes—she reclaims them. The “fated mates” element is handled with nuance; it’s not about inevitability, but about choice. Cinnamon and Hunter fight for their love not because fate demands it, but because they do.
If you're looking for something lush, romantic, and steeped in shadows—with a heroine who owns her power, a hero who respects it, and a setting that wraps around you like a velvet cloak—this book is your dark sanctuary.
Gothic Romeo & Juliet retelling – A classic forbidden-love scenario involving opposing houses or family legacies.
Forbidden Love – Romance that transgresses the boundaries of heritage, family feuds, or supernatural divides
Slow Burn Romance – A connection that develops gradually and intensifies over time, building tension.
Dark Secrets & Prophecy – Hidden histories, dangerous lineages, and ominous destiny heighten the gothic stakes
As my first book by Kristy Perkins, I was excited to get to know her voice, writing style, and ability to weave a story together. Gothic Magic and Hemlock Inheritance, part of the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection, did not disappoint. Kristy’s writing is beautiful and lyrical. This story holds Romeo and Juliet vibes, as star crossed fated mates fight their attraction and duty to their families. Our MCs bring light and dark to the story, while providing a slow burn that holds readers attention.
CiCi is a strong and feisty FMC. She has so much thrown at her during this story, but never once feels sorry for herself. She handles everything as it comes at her, while proving herself to belong in the world that she just discovered she is a part of. Her hybrid existence was never supposed to be, so when she finds out she is a magical creature and heir to a vast estate, she is shocked. As she learns more and more about this world, along with the people within, she is determined to show everyone she belongs.
Hunter has been a part of this world CiCi just discovered for his entire life. Their attraction is obvious, but Hunter has had duty pushed onto him his whole life. He does everything he can to fight the pull he feels towards CiCi, but it is a struggle. As their story progresses, readers get to read about their love story heating up, while an unpredictable story line keeps readers guessing about what is going to happen next.
I loved everything Kristy put into this book. The story of CiCi not allowing anyone’s perception of her to define who she is was a great theme throughout this story. With great MCs and side characters that brought depth and complexity to this story, I loved how each one brought something special to the story. A wonderful story that I couldn’t put down!
As always, review any author notes before reading.

✦ What is the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection? A collection of 11 books with cottagecore elements from gothic to cozy with various levels of spice but each one has a plant or flower attached to it that makes it all the more cottagecore cozy. ✦ Rating: 4.5/5
I just finished Gothic Magic and Hemlock Inheritance, which is pitched as a cozy, cottagecore fantasy—and while there’s a lot to love here, I’ve got to be honest: this one didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
The setting? Gorgeous. The gothic vibes mixed with whimsical magic? Totally my thing. The political intrigue running through the story was clever and engaging, and I actually found myself really interested in where all the twists and schemes were going. But then… there’s Cinnamon.
Cinnamon is our main character, and let me just say—she’s that friend. You know the one. The person who will be your ride-or-die bestie until a new boyfriend (or in this case, mysterious gothic inheritance) comes along, and suddenly you’re left sitting on the sidelines wondering what just happened. That’s exactly how she felt to me. She basically forgets about her lifelong friend the second she steps into this new life, and it made her incredibly unlikeable in my eyes.
On top of that, she has almost no agency throughout the story. Everything just sort of… happens to her. Instead of actively shaping her destiny, she’s swept along like a leaf in the wind, and that made it hard for me to connect or root for her.
So while I loved the idea of the book, the execution fell flat because I just couldn’t get past the main character. If you’re more forgiving of flaky heroines, you might really enjoy this one. For me though, Cinnamon soured the whole brew.

I really enjoyed this book and plan to read the next in the Eternal Eclipse Pursuers series. Cinnamon and Hunter are from different magical families. Everyone in Havenmoor is from one of eight magical families and that is the way they want to keep it. When Cinnamon is brought to town to claim her family's property and assets, her half vampire, half mage lineage immediately separates her. Hunter Dravenmoor is supposed to be a neutral party as the head of his family of necromancers, and he is, until he meets Cinnamon.
Lots of deep characters with alliances for days. There are several plot lines laid for future books that I hope to follow. The development of Cinnamon from naive novice to powerful FMC in full possession of both her mage and vampire heritage is very well done! I can't wait to see where the Eternal Eclipse Pursuers series goes next!
I rounded up from 4.5 stars. The only reason that I did not give 5 stars was that the initial sex scene felt more like rape than consensual sex. I did not feel good about that scene. If you might be negatively affected by this, I would recommend either skimming or skipping chapter 47 (pages 329 - 331 of the digital version) written from Cinnamon's perspective. The plot is not disrupted by skipping this short chapter, in my opinion.
Cinnamon (aka CiCi) is a vampire-mage hybrid, born from 2 rival bloodlines. She receives a letter requiring her return to Havenmoor to claim the Hartfield Estate, as her biological father is dead. She returns to find that things are way more complicated and political than she could have imagined.
Enter Hunter Dravenmoor, a shadow daddy necromancer, who shares a fated bond with CiCi. He tries to fight it, before eventually giving in to the inevitable and helping CiCi to navigate the crazy world she’s dropped into.
I wanted to like this book way more than I did. It started out so promising, but then started getting a little wild. There’s an entire group of people brought in about half way through the book, but then nothing is really done with them again. It felt like there were some holes, where we missed little parts of the story that would have made things make more sense. This is a Romeo and Juliet inspired story, and other than forbidden love, a couple of arranged marriages for politics’ sake and the fact that there’s a couple characters with the last name Capulet, the parallels pretty much ended there for me. My final thought is that the end felt rushed, like there should have been more. I hope the author does a sequel to tie up some of the loose ends.
In a town where power, betrayal, and magic collide, Cinnamon Hartfield must fight for her place in this treacherous world or risk losing everything including her heart. “Bound by blood, cursed by fate—will love be her salvation or her undoing?

✨ARC Review✨
Gothic Magic and Hemlock Inheritance is book #6 of the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection! This dark romance, Vampires, and Enemies to Lovers book is the second book I have read in The Enchanted Woods Cottagecore series and honestly I’m obsessed! I was so invested In this book after just a few chapters in. I really enjoyed everything about this book specially Victoria's Journals! It’s was a very good cozy read and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series. I definitely recommend this story.
Thank you to Kristy Perkins and the nerd fam for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review! 🩷
I recently read Gothic Magic and Hemlock Inheritance by Kristy Perkins. It follows the tale of Cinnamon and Hunter, who are fated mates. This is a gothic romance that’s very dark and twisty.
The book had a lot of great ideas and the writing was amazing. The way she can bring you in to a scene and make it seem like you’re there . My issue is, there was so many things happening. It was very fast paced. Honestly, it could be like 4 books. There was quite a bit of plot holes. Like what happened to the circle? Her friend? What will happen with Evie? The ending was very abrupt and left me with even more questions. I felt that her “training” was very vague. Also she wasn’t shocked by the magical community even though she was in an orphanage most of her life. There was alot of details like this that was left out.
Overall I did enjoy the book. It was slightly spicy.
I really enjoyed the story and was engaged from beginning to end. It was fast paced with no lull. Set in a magical community, heavy with politics and manipulation. However, I constantly felt like the story was unfinished and I was missing pieces. Sometimes it was one paragraph to the next. Other times it was one chapter to the next. A whole "social group" (to keep this review spoiler free) was introduced and never spoken of again. 🤨 And the ending felt a bit rushed and unresolved.. because of all this, it unfortunately brings my rating down to a 3.5 ⭐. Overall a good book, but ... a lot of plot holes.. I also remember seeing that one of the books in the enchanted woods cottagecore collection was going to have a sequel and it might have been this one, which could explain the unresolved ending.. But I can't be sure.
Hidden away from her life, Cinnamon, or CiCi, didn't know of the power locked inside her. Not until she received a letter, her father, Ambrose, was dead and she was to inherit everything.
Hunter had been Ambrose's apprentice but it was Cinnamon who called to him. Defying everything to be with her was not something he considered doing. His pull to her was undeniable.
Together they would work out how to contol CiCi's power and how to make their world accept them.
The world of this book combines many supernatural elements but handled in a unique way.
The connection between out two main characters was undeniable and I look forward to reading more of their story.
I really enjoyed reading this book. This combines so many of the things that I love in a great fantasy book. It has heartache and yearning, curses, forbidden love, magic and lots of secrets. I literally can't wait continue reading this series.
The FMC and the MMC were absolutely delicious. The undeniable attraction between the two of them , although forbidden, was everything I wanted and more.
The spice was definitely spicing but I will say that the initial sex scene is kind of aggressive so be prepared for that.
If you love a good story about fated mates with the found family trope and all of the intensity of a good drama, then this is the book for you.
I honestly feel it took me longer to read this book than it should've. It is the perfect time of year for you to pick up this book and start reading it. You have witches, vampires, necromancer, and a whole lot of different types of magical beings. Your FMC find out she was orphaned and the true reason behind it and coming to deal with that lifestyle. The author does leave this book open ended you know there's more coming and you are going to have to wait for them, but it is definitely a book. You could sit down and eat up in no time at all
This is a different read than I expected. I like Cinnamon and think that she had a lot of changes to cope with, but instead of getting upset, she is fierce and feisty. Hunter, her fated mate, irritates me in the sense that he does not want the match and pushes Cinnamon away. This is a good book and is worth reading, so please ignore my irritation as this is a personal bug-bear of mine.
This book is very enticing. Love the cottage core meets vampire manor setting. Where mages and vampires are not to blend, one person may tip the balance. This book is dramatic, whitty, and so entrapping with its setting, characters and dialogue .
This was a fun Romeo and Juliette retelling. Kristy Perkins has a beautiful writing style that sucked me in right away. I loved the characters and the world building.
I did feel like the ending was a bit abrupt, and left me with several questions. I would definitely enjoy a sequel.
Dark gothic, and full of cursed legacies, Gothic Magic & Hemlock Inheritance delivers forbidden love, rival families, and a slow burn romance that simmers with tension. The atmosphere is lush and eerie, though the pacing lingers at times Perfect for fans of fated mates and dark cottagecore vibes.
I received a copy of this from the author, thank you @authorkristyp !! These opinions are my own!!
Vampires. Mages. Necromancers. Etc.
This was magical and I love the overall message. The gothic vibes were deliciously dark and mysterious. Our FMC is thrust into a magical world after learning of an inheritance. There’s a sentient house too which is so fun!!
There’s a couple spicy scenes but definitely plot forward!
I can’t wait for the next book and to see what trouble Hunter and Cinnamon get into!!!
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review. Cici and Hunter were amazing characters you’ll root for throughout the entire book! From the very beginning Cici is determined to succeed and Hunter’s will to support her through it all are obvious. The book did leave me with a lot of questions and there were numerous plot points that would be brought up but never mentioned again which left me feeling frustrated. The apothecary at the end felt like it came way out of left field. It seemed so important but hadn’t been brought up at all the entire book?
