When the Darkness Calls Her

Rate this book
Wraith lives in the shadows, a ghost in the system, a man with a vendetta carved into his bones. A hacker by trade, a part-time assassin when the job requires a personal touch.
Always in control. Nothing touches him. Nothing tempts him.
Until her.
Lily is soft smiles and quiet kindness, untouched by the kind of darkness that made him. She moves through life with an effortless warmth, offering something too pure for the world—a pureness he wants to defile. She doesn’t see him—learning, watching, waiting. Every quiet kindness, every bright-eyed look, pulling him deeper into obsession. She should fear him.
She doesn’t.
And it’s driving him mad.
But something else moves through the city at night. Something violent. Unhinged. A force of destruction that calls to the darkest parts of him. A game he can’t resist playing.
Two obsessions.
Two temptations.
Wraith is about to learn that in the dark, nothing is ever what it seems. And when the darkness finally calls—he’ll be waiting.

This is a 3.75 for me. I usually really love Amber's writing, and I enjoyed book 1 but this book and me just didn't connect and I think that has to do with what felt like two different writing styles. One was her normal writing structure (which I enjoyed) but then there were these other passages mostly at the start of the book that were like bullet points. NOW I think this was maybe to emphasize the both the chaotic mindset but also single focus of the characters which if that's true is an interesting way to do it but for me personally as the reader it took me out of the story. Thats because when that was going on it wasn't really giving me much in the way of context of what was going on with the plot, characters or scene. I feel like these bullet scenes also threw off the pacing of the book because at times it felt like some scenes were skimmed over a little especially when it came to the relationship building aspect of the MCS. There was also something with chapters 21/22 that felt like at first there was a skip in the story but then felt like chapter 22 was done a little backwards in terms of the events going on. I was just very confused and had to reread them because I felt like I had missed something.

Now for the characters themselves I liked some of their interactions like the first couple with Wraith and Nari because I loved the chaotic intensity of the scenes and Nari was definitely badass. I liked Lily too because you could tell something was going on with her that made you curious because something was off so reading to find out what had happened to her and how she was the way she was interesting. I just wish there had been a little more relationship building as well as I wish the reveal of wraith figuring out things had been described because I kept waiting for that Ahhhh moment from him and it felt like a blip.

Overall, while there were moments, I liked what was going on and I thought the characters were interesting there were other moments where I didn't enjoy the change in writing style as it left me wanting more.

This book is about wraith who lives in the shadows as a hacker and part time assassin who is out for vengeance. Nothing gets in his way as he is a ghost in the digital world and is in complete control of any system he touches. Nothing can touch or tempt him. That is until he meets Lily whose softness and innocence calls to the darkness in him. She is too pure for this world and all he wants to do is defile it. So, he watches, listens, waiting & obsessing over how he can pull her into his darkness all so that she will see and fear him. Except nothing he does has her fearing him and it's driving him to madness. But it's not just sweet and kind Lily filled with sunshine who has his attention but also this dark, violent unhinged force of destruction getting in his way playing games he cannot resist. But both of these obsessions are keeping secrets from him, and nothing is what it seems and until the darkness reveals its secrets he will just have wait and watch and play with his new toys.

This is far beyond my expectations!

This book if this duet focuses on Wraith. He is on a mission to destroy Voss the darkest, most vile and very evil Villain of the story. Then there’s his obsession Lillian and his partner in crime Neri.. she’s so crazy ( in a great way ) and tough and a killer that enjoys her kills! The book is very detailed and not a quick read. It’s an intricate web of little bits of the truth are designed to lead the reader to another part of the truth and it’s fabulously torturous and a total mind blowing experience. Amber immersed me into this world and at times I felt like my head was spinning! So much is linked together piece by piece. It’s not a book to read quickly through because if you do then you’ll miss vital clues. It’s a long book which was needed for this all to make sense. It’s spicy and hot and I fell in love with Wraith. I recommend it highly and yes it’s disturbing and has a psychological thriller vibe to it as well. Read this book because it’s so well written and the HEA is perfect! 🖤🖤🖤

Oh boy oh boy

I really enjoyed this book. I did figure it out early on but I don't do spoilers so that's all I'll say. I liked the characters and the developing relationships. I definitely loved the adversarial relationship between man and cat. Over all loved and recommend reading it I do have a couple editorial complaints... ( need a better proofreader) One chapter she walks in the door removes her shoes then picks up and cuddles her cat after which she slips out of her shoes.... Ummm was she wearing two pairs?? And another Wraith is wearing gloves but fisted his hand so tight his nails left marks... Are his nails razor blades that cut through the gloves? There were grammatical errors and then the part where you repeat a sentence twice...

Great Story

Processing how i felt about this book is hard. Because I was extremely engaged and it was tough to put down because i had to know what happend next. I just feel the book is so thick but I’m not really sure what filled the pages. It was missing important relationship building, every scene with Lilly seemed to be sex a couple words and he was gone. I think the story could’ve been better if the big reveal with the ladies came out a little sooner so we can get to know them together and how their relationship with wraith will look. Also, i suspect she was the girl from foster care he met, but i wish the booked touched on that.

Soooo good

Book two is even better than book one!!!! You have a bubbly FMC, an obsessive MMC, and a new twist that ill let you figure out for yourself. This book comes with daddy issues, obsession, obedience, and love. This book is everything. A girl who smiles and a man who just wants to break her fall in love and play a dangerous game of tag. The spice is beyond everything. Bravo and I cant wait for what comes next.

where do I begin!

Meeting Wraith in the first book had me questioning what was going on in his world.
It didn’t take long to catch on to who and what he stands for. I absolutely adore him.

And I fell in love with him when he chose both. This man LOVES ALL OF THEM AND MY HEART IS SO HAPPY! Like every single person deserves a love like Wraiths!

So my next question is - WHO WAS SLAMMING DOORS AT S’s HOUSE!?!

I loved the story and the characters, but F*@£ing editing!! Would have easily been 5 stars, but it's such a shame to see a great story plagued by such terrible oversights that could easily have been remedied before release.

Spoiler-Free Review: When the Darkness Calls Her by @author_amber_thoma
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A hacker, a Mime, and a Florist walk into a bar… and somehow it becomes one of my favorite reads of the year. I’m obsessed in the most unhinged way.

From the moment I met Wraith in Book One, I knew I wanted his story—and Amber Thoma did not just deliver, she unleashed him. Masked. Dangerous. Intoxicating. 😈🖤

This book is seductive chaos wrapped in secrets and shadows. The tension? Ridiculous. The mind games? Delicious. The masked man with stalker energy and a twisted soft spot for her? Exactly what my morally gray heart ordered.

If you love:
🖤 Masked men
🔍 Hidden identities
💅 Unhinged, powerful FMC
👀 Stalker vibes with obsessive devotion
💣 Twisted romance
…you’re going to devour this.

This book isn’t just a dark romance—and I’d gladly follow these characters into the fire. (And probably thank them for lighting the match.)

I liked the first book so much and this one was just trash. So hard to follow. The writing style was choppy and repetitive. Gave it my best but ended up DNF. Very disappointing

Honestly, I think if the writing style had been a little different, she filled in some plot holes, and quickened the pace I would give this five stars. I LOVED the concept and twists. I had my suspicions and the author did a great job of twisting everything up and keeping you unsure. I screamed out loud when I finally read the twist but it did take way longer to get to it than I think necessary. Still this book lives rent free in my head and had me staring at the wall when it was over. If you love a unique twist and stalker MMC I still recommend this one. 🖤

You must read this book. I truly can't review it without giving things away. It spicy and wild. Wraith is so well written that I can hear his voice in my head. Also, the references and humor make this book hilarious and a true gem. The balance of light and dark create the kind of dark romance that I devour.
