For the women in London, the “chance of a lifetime” may prove to be their last.
Hidden among the romantic rendezvous and secret messages in The Times of London’s Personal Column, a peculiar ad offers one young woman the opportunity of travel, adventure, and a new life—no questions asked, all expenses paid. It seems too good to be true.
For Gwen, Charolette, and Lizzie, it was. Each woman responded. Each disappeared without a trace.
Mikaela Forsythe, no stranger to risk herself, agreed to look into the disappearances as a favor for a friend. What she discovers is none of these women left London. And an unsettling pattern suggests there may be others.
When the ad reappears, Mikaela devises a dangerous plan—she’ll answer it herself. It’s the only way to find out what really happened. But taking the bait and risking her safety puts her at odds with Brodie, her closest ally.
As Mikaela steps into the unknown, she finds herself entangled in a mystery far darker than she imagined—one that threatens to claim her as its next victim.
Carla Simpson’s thirteenth installment in the Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe Murder Mystery series is a masterful deviation from the familiar dynamic we've come to love. In this book, Simpson takes a bold and brilliant approach, shifting the spotlight primarily onto Mikaela, while Brodie is preoccupied with a case for the Crown. His absence from the central narrative not only adds intrigue but also highlights Mikaela’s strength and determination in a compelling way.
The story kicks off with an enticing ad in The Times, promising adventure and travel. For Gwen, Charlotte, and Lizzie, however, it leads to their mysterious disappearances. Mikaela Forsythe, investigating the case as a favor, quickly uncovers that the girls never even left London. Fueled by her relentless spirit and haunted by memories of her own sister’s disappearance, Mikaela’s resolve intensifies. Taking matters into her own hands, she responds to the ad herself, diving headfirst into a dark and dangerous investigation that tests her limits.
Simpson’s decision to separate Brodie and Mikaela in this narrative is nothing short of genius. It serves as a poignant reminder of how deeply connected they are, even when apart. Their emotional struggles become more evident, highlighting the evolution of their relationship. Mikaela’s fearless pursuit of the truth, often acting on impulse and placing herself in peril, kept me utterly engrossed. The tension soared when Brodie discovered her danger—his raw, heartfelt emotions resonated deeply, making my heart ache for him.
While I adored every gripping moment of this story, what truly stood out was Simpson’s exceptional writing skills and the wonderful twists she adds to her mysteries, the relationship between Brodie and Mikaela feels authentic. I eagerly anticipate future books, where this perfectly imperfect pair will continue to navigate both their feelings and the mysteries that come their way.

Yet another brilliant offering from the masterful penmanship of Carla Simpson. In this thirteenth instalment of the Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe investigations more nefarious goings on are uncovered when Mikaela is hired by the father of Gwen, one of the girls who disappeared several weeks ago, with no new developments provided by Scotland Yard to the father; being a case of a missing young woman the police classify it as a run-away to Gretna Green or just a run-away.
With Angus away on another secret assignment for the crown, Mikaela must work this case herself. Her tenacity and determination to find these girls is wonderful to read and shows her off in the best light. She keeps constant notes on the board that enable her to review her progress and identify any areas she may have missed. While investigating, she comes to hear of another victim, Lizzie Smith, a local girl from the market who also went missing before Gwen. While speaking with the people Lizzie regularly interacted with, Mikaela finally finds the link that will help her tie both girls together. While pursuing their trail, she comes to hear of yet another girl missing, this time a girl from a wealthy family, Charlotte, daughter of a member of parliament. When the father refuses to help Mikaela with her inquiry, putting his trust in Scotland Yard, it is Mikaela who contacts his wife and she, together with her daughter can provide several more clues that assist her along the way.
Lots of nail biting as we get to the last few chapters, especially when Mikaela tries to reach Brodie desperately but decides to proceed to follow the same path as the previous victims while taking as many precautions as possible.
Her unwillingness to give up was lovely to read and the brilliance that Ms Simpson employed keeping this story and the previous twelve in the series so remarkably interesting was wonderful to read and enjoy. I received an ARC from the publishers and Booksprout with my thanks and submit my honest review voluntarily.
First let me say, this series is best read in order. You can read each book and thoroughly enjoy them. But knowing the history of Mikaela and Brodie makes each book more special as they continue to grow. This was a hard book for me as I missed the special connection and interaction that Mikaela and Brodie usually have when on a case. Brodie is gone on a secretive case for Sir Avery at the agency. This book is all about Mikaela and her determination and tenacity to help a friend of Mr. Cavendish. Once she starts looking into the missing daughter, she finds more clues and is determined to find out what happen to her. When more young ladies show up missing, she knows something is not right. Along with having a case on her own she is also worried about Brodie and what he is doing. They have not been separated for long periods since they married. With help from characters from past books, she thinks she knows where the ladies are. She tries with no help from the agency to find or get a message to Brodie that she needs his help. When she can’t she goes on her own straight into danger to help others. Brodie has no idea what or where or the danger she is in. OH, my. I missed the interaction of people who are usually involved somewhat in their cases. James and Catherine, her Publisher and sister who now have a two-month-old daughter. Lily and Aunt Antonia and one can’t forget Munro, best friend to Brodie. The hound, Rupert and Mr. Cavendish were luckily in this story along with Miss Effie too. The ending is very good and promises more books to come, YA I can’t wait. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is one of my very favorite series. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
While Brodie is occupied with a super secret mission for The Agency Mikaela agrees to help their friend Mr. Cavendash. He knows of a missing girl the daughter of a shopkeeper whom the police are not looking for. And so the hunt is on. Mikaela learns there’s not just one girl but at least three and she’s more determined than ever to bring them home to their families. Danger is mounting and the clock is ticking, Brodie is away and so she must act. But will this be her final act? Read on for all the captivating details! Loved it! While I absolutely enjoy the duo working together it was a treat to read about Mikaela leading her own investigation. She’s absolutely got the fortitude and intelligence for it and she has that bonus women’s intuition too. This is a sad tale that young women who’ve gone missing are written off, a problem that still occurs to this day. So fitting for a woman to be the one to lead the charge and not accept the easy excuse. Rupert is amazing as always. Wonderful to meet the next generation of Montgomery/Forsythe women in Linnie’s new daughter. An exciting and eerie tale in equal measure I loved every word! Can’t wait for the next adventure!!
Brodie is off on a super secret mission for the Crown, so Mikaela is on her own as she investigates the disappearance of the daughter of a friend of Mr. Cavendish. As she investigates she discovers that there have been other disappearances and all are connected to an advertisement in the Personal Column of the Times of London. This is a pretty dark mystery and it made me wonder just how Mikaela was going to get out of danger. Love the interaction between Brodie and Mikaela. He is always there for her when she needs him and even though she is a very independent sort, she also realizes that she needs him as much as he needs her. Great love story between them. Awesome series that should be read in chronological order to get the full flavor.

Mikaela is on her own as Brodie is involved with the Crown business. Searching for a missing girl has her remembering her own sister’s disappearance and her heart will not let her stop. The author always does a fantastic job of giving enough background info from the other stories as to not spoil them, but help the reader understand what is going on. The mystery is well hidden and watching Mikaela follow the clues is fun to read. I enjoyed seeing Brodie’s emotions come to the surface a bit when he realizes she is involved too deeply. I adore this couple and their adventures, her feisty spirit and his “rear door” style of loving her! Another great mystery, to be sure!.

Another wonderful instalment in the series, although this one is a little different. Mikaela takes on the murder investigation on her own. This book is a little lighter on the adventure and mystery and covers a lot of background and catch-up, so for those who have not read many of these books, this is a good book to find out the back story of the characters. In saying that, the mystery still has you guessing who the murderer is and how Mikaela will solve it and rescue the girls. But we must not forget Brodie and how he struggles to admit his true feelings for Milaela when he thinks he may lose her. All for exciting reading. I received this as an ARC from Booksprout and freely give my review and wait patiently for the next instalment.
I'm really enjoying this series and this entry is one of my favorites. The "Mudger" has asked for help for one of his friends who's daughter has disappeared. Mikaela investigates on her own as Angus is busy with another assignment. She decides the situation is too urgent to wait for his help as she becomes certain that the girl's disappearance may be tied to others, and possibly a murder. Mikaela's investigation is interesting to watch, as she involves her social connections who are unique characters. She also puts herself in some danger, which she may not be as prepared for as she thinks. I was riveted from beginning to end.

Deadly Attraction (Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe Murder Mystery Book 13) is the first book I have read by Carla Simpson. I wasn’t sure if I would have missed something important since this is so far along in the series. However, it is clearly written with characters explained as necessary, making for a wonderful compelling read. Missing girls and a villain who needs to be caught sends Mikaela Forsythe on the hunt for the girls and the truth. Her husband, Angus Brodie, is mainly on a case for the Crown until Mikaela is in acute danger herself. Now I will be reading more by this author. 4.5 Stars
Deadly Advertisements An enticing newspaper ad promises adventure and a fresh start—but for the women who answer, it leads to something far more sinister. When one woman turns up dead and others vanish without a trace, Mikaela steps in to uncover the truth. With Brodie off on a separate mission, she's on her own—and the trap she's walking into may be deadlier than she ever imagined. Can she stay one step ahead, or will she become the next to disappear? This suspenseful mystery kept me engaged from start to finish. I’ve enjoyed every book in this Victorian series, and this one is no exception. Perfect for readers who love historical intrigue with a strong female lead.
One of the things I most love about this series is that Mikaela is the one who has the money, she has a career as an author, she has friends like Templeton, and her family with Lily and her sister, her aunt, and of course, Brody and Munro, Cavendish and Rupert. I find returning to their adventures interesting, they're never the same. It would be easy by book 13 to fall into some traps just to add bulk to the pages and I did not find that here. The author does a great job of keeping things familiar but not boring, and moving this story forward, which I really appreciate. This was a good one.
Even though this is a continuation of a series, you may be able to enjoy it without the others. The author does a good job of blending the history of the characters’ past with the present and it doesn’t get boring. The major murder mystery is solved before the end of the book. I felt that the last chapter could have been expanded a bit to give more completion to the minor characters. I have enjoyed all the books in this series and look forward to the next one.

Carla Simpson’s "Deadly Attraction" is yet another stellar installment in a series that never disappoints. This book is an absolute page-turner, brimming with excitement and suspense that grips you from the very first page.
The plot is intricately woven, holding the reader’s attention with unexpected twists and heart-pounding moments. Simpson’s ability to maintain such a captivating storyline is truly commendable. The strong female character at the heart of the narrative adds depth and resilience, embodying strength and determination that is both inspiring and relatable.
Every chapter leaves you eager for more, making it hard to put the book down. "Deadly Attraction" is a shining example of why Carla Simpson’s series continues to captivate readers. If you’re looking for an exhilarating read with dynamic characters and a gripping plot, this book is a must-read!
This series even at book 13, has not tapered off, but continues to be fast paced, well written and entertaining.
Mikaela is the main investigator in this book and her grit, tenacity and braver6 are highlighted. You also get to see the emotional side of the relationship between our lovely sleuthing couple, who have fought hard to get together.
Overall a fab read.

Brodie & Mikaela work on different cases for a while, much to her dismay as she likes to work along side him. Three missing girls, perhaps more with no leads & for gotten by the police department. Everything changes when she looks at an advertisement one of the girls had. And then she takes a chance & everything goes haywire. Brodie is beside himself & with Rupert the dog he’s on her trail he hopes…
Deadly Attraction is a fast-paced, addictive thriller that keeps the tension high from the first page to the last. Carla Simpson weaves sharp pacing with psychological twists, creating characters whose secrets steadily unravel in unsettling ways. Just when you think you see where the story is going, it pivots, raising the stakes and the suspense. A gripping read for fans of dark relationships, hidden motives, and page-turning drama.
This is the next book in the series and is full of nonstop action. Brodie and Mikaela work separately in this one on two different investigations. This separation causes much trouble for them.
I loved this book. I neglected all responsibilities and finished it in one day!.

I loved the characters; I loved the story! Carla Simpson is a fine writer who weaves a story that captured me immediately! I can’t believe I dropped in on book #13; now I’ll have to go back and start at book #1!.

This series gets better and better. While Brodie is off on an assignment, Mikaela takes a case on a missing woman. Her investigation leads to other missing women. She finds out they answered an ad in the newspaper. Mikaela sets off on a dangerous investigation to find these women and can only hope that Brodie gets back in time to help her.
As always, the adventures of Mikaela and Brodie are very entertaining. With the services of Rupert, the hound, Mikeala takes on the case of a missing daughter. At the same time, Brodie is busy chasing down spies for the Crown. Mikaela follows the clues and find out about more missing girls. The hunt is on and the ending is exciting.
Once again, I enjoy being in M and B’s world. I loved the topic of women and exploitation in this novel … the mystery was intriguing and very engaging. I love how Brodie loves Mikayla!! Now all we need is a little black hair and dark eyed little baby Scotsman to complete the duo. Would love to see how they incorporate parenthood into their business.

Another excellent and exciting adventure. Carla Simpson never disappoints and each mystery makes her characters more alive and real. I highly recommend this as a must read if you have been following the series. If you have not, you are missing a delightful, exciting series.
I finished this a couple of wks ago, but have been too busy to update. I love it. I love the series. It was a great mystery, I enjoy reading how the two main characters navigate their relationship, and most of all, Mikaela's internal monologs are so witty. It's a dark book, but chuckles here and there keep it from becoming too heavy.
This book is so enjoyable. The investigations, the characters that are becoming more familiar with each book. Their social divide is so great, yet their marriage becomes more solid with respect for and knowledge of each other as they continue solving crimes.
I love this series of Mikaela and Brodie, who handle each mystery that finds it's way into their world. Each story gets better and better as you follow this series. It's one you don't want to miss and if you did, I recommend going back to each of them.
I have read all books in this series, and found from th first that I couldn't put them down. I love the periodic history and the characters are so real. This series is for anyone who loves both history and a good mystery.
I've read them all and each book just gets better. Brodie and Mikaela make a good pair and the conflicts they investigate are suitably intriguing and disturbing while still in keeping with the book's time period. Keep them coming!
This was my first read of the series and I will go back for more! The topic is timely what with all the human trafficking. Angus and Mikaela are likable and interesting. Good read!
These two mains are just so great together...the banter, the sweetness with each other, the love story. And always an intriguing mystery that provides both suspense and intelligent sleuthing.
