Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning

Rate this book
Now completely revised! An essential guide on how AI is revolutionizing the future of learning and how educators can adapt to this new era of human thinking.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way we learn, work, and think. Its integration into classrooms and workplaces is already underway, transforming ideas about creativity, authorship, and education. In this practical guide, teachers will discover how to harness and manage AI as a powerful teaching tool. José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson present emerging and powerful research on the seismic changes AI is already creating in schools and the workplace, providing invaluable insights into what AI can accomplish in the classroom and beyond.

This second edition provides essential updates to new classes of tools—such as reasoning models, deep research, and agents—as well as many new assignment ideas and revised prompt ideas throughout. The authors expand the section on simulations and role-playing and include a brand-new section on customized bots. A new chapter on ethics and environmental concerns rounds out the collection. By learning how to use new AI tools and resources, educators will gain the confidence to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by AI. From interactive learning techniques to advanced assignment and assessment strategies, this comprehensive guide offers practical suggestions for integrating AI effectively into teaching and learning environments. Bowen and Watson tackle crucial questions related to academic integrity, cheating, and other emerging issues.

In the age of AI, critical thinking skills, information literacy, and a liberal arts education are more important than ever. As AI continues to reshape the nature of work and human thinking, educators can equip students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. This indispensable guide, a companion text to Joan Monahan Watson's book for K-12 instructors Learning with AI, leads educators through the uncharted territory of AI-powered education and the future of teaching and learning.

Read this for work and thought it was very good, lots of practical takeaways while still giving a full and nuanced picture of all the factors at play with AI and education.

Teaching with AI offers a timely and pragmatic framework for educators navigating the integration of generative AI into teaching and learning. Bowen and Watson successfully reframe prompting as a liberal arts skill—rooted in critical thinking, question formulation, and answer evaluation—rather than a technical competency. This conceptual shift is essential for those of us working to prepare students for a labor market where AI fluency commands significant salary premiums.

The book's greatest strength lies in its actionable guidance: concrete prompts for various pedagogical contexts, frameworks for designing custom AI tools (bots), and low-effort interventions for addressing academic integrity. The authors advocate for a "better than AI" standard for student work and emphasize the "AI Mindset"—students working with AI as collaborative partners rather than passive consumers. Their treatment of equity concerns and the reframing of integrity conversations around voice and values (rather than detection) is particularly valuable.

While the book occasionally leans heavily on convincing readers of AI's utility (which I was already convinced of going in), the practical examples and implementation strategies make it immediately applicable across disciplines and institutional contexts.

Disclaimer: This book is of particular interest and extremely timely to anyone working in education, especially those developing AI literacy frameworks, designing curriculum in the age of generative AI, or building institutional support structures for students and faculty.

Written for university professors, but I still found it relevant. I've now read a handful of recent books on AI in education and this one felt the most current and useful.

I was looking for help shaping my school’s AI approach and AI literacy plan. Mission accomplished. Although the focus is on AI in university settings, I thought it was filled with ideas that can be applied to K-12 schools. It also helped me think through what skills and competencies will matter most for students and what we need to prioritize and nurture before introducing hands-on AI work.

Definitely recommend it to any educator or school leader, but be sure to look for the latest edition. Hopefully, they push out a new one every year so it keeps pace.

Recommended reading for College Composition Instruction

If you need to know more about AI in relation to how others are incorporating AI as a tool for writing instruction and other instruction in the classroom, this is the book that you need. The only thing is that it doesn’t focus enough on AI literacy/ethics, and how to incorporate it more into the classroom. But it can lead to ideas.

Most of this I had an inkling or a feeling on what would be shared about AI in the classroom. Some of it wasn't surprising. It did give me some ideas though on how I could apply AI in my class.

Some parts of this book weren't as relevant for my work, but overall it got me thinking about AI in different ways (though I remain skeptical and wary of it).
