A medical psychological mystery masterfully written

William Gullane, the nom de plume for a seasoned practicing surgeon, writes psychological mystery novels. His books to date – THE WAVES OF GUILT, THE RIPPLE OF REGRETS, THE BURDEN OF DECEIT, BURY YOUR MISTAKES, and FIRST, DO NO HARM.

Mark Davis is a member of a family whose name resounds throughout the medical profession, establishing a model that is a challenge to follow. The story opens with young Mark and his new bride Jill as they are accepted in medical school and nursing school at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Mark’s initial challenge is a hand tremor, a factor that did not contribute to his aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon, yet his ability to manage surgical robotics gained his confidence that helped him face the family legacy of being a top physician. This first encounter, aided by the use of beta blockers to reduce his tremor and by the ever present support of Jill, is but the first challenge of this meticulously scribed medical psychological drama that addresses the contemporary emergence of AI powered surgical robots – and the potential consequences of medical malpractice. The book’s title echoing the Hippocratic Oath resounds throughout this mesmerizing novel. William Gullane is proving to be as adept at his second profession of writing as his honors as a surgeon.

Medical dramas are usually a win with me, and this book was no exception. You get the drama of being in the medical field as well as insight into what it is like to play a major role in the surgical field since the main character is a surgeon. This book takes you through the ins and outs of hospital life to keep you glued to each page. The main character, on the other hand, is drama in a very different way than in a surgical office. He's almost unbearable at the beginning of the book. I enjoy a flawed character, but he was a bit bratty throughout most of the book. There are some redeeming moments, especially as he begins to grow on you, so stick it out and you'll certain to enjoy this story too.

Mark wasn’t doing well in his surgical practice. He was in serious debt, and he was unhappy, unable to shake free from the psychological trauma resulting from his past. He wanted to live up to the success of the Davis family, but he felt the weight of his lineage and wanted to get away from it

This is the story of what Mark chooses to do to try to reinvent himself in the face of mounting pressure. It’s a realistic tale, and one many readers should identify with, as so many of us deal with daily pressure and expectations of the kind that Mark does. This is an unflinching book that pulls no punches as it explores the depths of one man’s emotional turmoil.

A really good book.

Imagine a guy carrying the weight of his family name on his shoulders, trying to be the successful surgeon everyone expects him to be, but inside he’s struggling with debts and traumas that won’t leave him alone. What hooks you is seeing how he gets himself into a dead end because of his own ambition. It really makes you think about those moments when you think you’re in control, until reality hits you and shows you that you’re not. It’s a tense, very human story with twists that keep you hooked because you want to know how on earth he’s going to get out of that mess. If you like dramas that feel real and keep you on the edge of your seat, you have to read this.

In this captivating mystery, we meet Mark and his family, who are living with the consequences of the decisions he has made over the years. Nothing in life is free, and Mark knows this all too well. After abandoning his current surgical practice, Mark is forced to make drastic decisions. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end, as it explores the consequences we face as a result of the choices we make throughout our lives, and how these decisions also affect those around us. I think it's a book that makes us reflect and question. I recommend this read for being thought-provoking and for showing us that even something small can have a significant impact.

Okay, so this story had me hooked right away. I kept reading because I wanted to see how Mark would get through everything life keeps throwing at him. It’s not easy for him, and you feel that weight all the time. It's interesting to see how much his choices matter, not just for him but for the people around him. Got me thinking about my own life choices, not gonna lie.

While reading, I could feel his struggles with the pressure of family and his past. It’s not a perfect journey, but that’s what makes it interesting. I’d recommend it because it keeps you hooked and leaves you thinking after. It’s a story worth giving a chance.
