Lovesick teenagers with magic. What could possibly go wrong?

So Dylan and Kera are living in the "human" world thinking all is safe and wonderful. But when monsters start crossing the barrier between the two worlds they realize things aren't as rosy as they thought.

First what I liked about this book: Once it got going some of the magic was pretty cool.

What I disliked about this book: It seemed to take 75% of the book to get going! Add to that the two main characters professing how much they love and trust each other, then going off and hiding things from each other. It just drove me crazy. Okay, they are just dumb teenagers but still you either trust each other or you don't. Dylan still seemed to act like a love sick puppy at times; following Kera around. I guess trust was a key problem throughout the entire book for me. Dylan trusting his father. Kera trusting Dylan's father. Them trusting his grandfather. These guys were evil in the last book, right? Plus being dead doesn't seem to bother these characters at all.

In the end, the whole story just doesn't come across as believable. I know, it's supposed to be magic but even that has its limits and this book exceeded those by a LONG shot.

Will I read the last book in the trilogy? Probably....

Not long ago, Dylan didn't even know there was a possibility of another realm alongside that of the human realm. Now he has been to Teag and is thankful to be back with his family in this realm. But he hasn't come home the same. He now has some amazing powers, a beautiful girlfriend with her own powers, and fierce bouts of temper that are growing wildly out of control. With each "tantrum" Dylan gains even more power. Now what? Is this normal? The Fallen Prince by Shea Berkley is a non-stop journey into the world of fantasy where you must suspend your belief in what you can see and open your mind to what could be! The veil between the two worlds is thinning, monsters are escaping and Kera fears for the world she left behind. When kera is put in mortal danger, it is up to Dylan to save her, but is he able? Can he control himself long enough to reach the woman he loves? Even with his new found abilities, is he strong enough?

Shea Berkley can write! Her attention to detail and sense of being in the moment with each character has brought this fantasy to life! She is not afraid to make the villains evil and dark, but she doesn't coddle her heroes, either. In our world, at any given moment, there are millions of things going on, in Shea Berkley's world, it is the same! Pay attention to the details and enjoy this fast-paced tale! and, please-pick up and read Book One first, you'll want to be up to speed!

I want to thank the author Shea Berkley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with an ARC copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

Blurb from Goodreads:
There is a magical realm that exists alongside the human realm, but it wasn’t always so. The firsts are beings who were created to nurture the land. The world was split into two realms, and the firsts were allowed to redeem themselves. Sadly, the majority continued with their self-indulgent behavior to the point where one of their own, a king, became so obsessed with power, he was secretly banished by the court in hopes his absence would calm the masses. But a spark of madness was ignited and not even the lost king's absence could curtail what he set in motion.

So when I read the first book in this series, I really wasn't sure what to expect. I loved the cover the first time I saw it and it had been on my TBR for a while. So when I was contacted by Entangled to read the second book for a blog tour, well, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to jump in. And I'm so glad I did.

Certainly the covers draw my attention. I love books that are told from the male POV. Although, we also get Kera's POV through third person in this book (as we did in the first). I did find it odd that the author used two different voices in this way, but it really didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the story. And I love how the hoody is incorporated into the covers of these books. It reminds me of the first time we are introduced to Dylan in The Marked Son when he's in his mother's car, slouched down with the hoody pulled up over his head!

This book picks up a few days after the end of the first book. Dylan is no longer in Teag and Kera is staying with him and his grandparents. But turmoil is constant in Teag and Dylan feels the pull to be there to defend it.

Dylan continues to be an awesome main character. I love his passion more than anything else. And he has such commitment to do things that he knows need to be done. And Dylan's new found powers are building, and he needs to figure out how to control them. You can feel his struggle to fit into the human world. He feels pulled between what he has known all his life, and the land that calls to him, Teag. He has several moments of self doubt and pitying during this book. But I think it goes along with his personality in general: having never fit in anywhere, never having had friends, parents who abandoned him.
Kera remains a bit mysterious during this book. She has secrets she keeps from Dylan. I get that she doesn't want to put him in harm's way, but at the same time I feel badly that she doesn't feel she can trust him to keep himself safe. She fears for her world, but also fears for Dylan and what the "war" between their two worlds could possibly mean.
As with her first book, Berkley does a phenomenal job with creating her secondary characters. I love how she introduces humor through them. It breaks up the action and drama that could possibly monopolize the story and make it out of control. And she introduces more characters to us that really fit in well with the story and make the story line that much more interesting. We also revisit characters from the first book who were not quite developed at that time, but now we're truly seeing who they are. There are too many characters to list, but believe me, you will see that there is rhyme and reason for each and every one of them to be part of this storyline. And she does a great job making them realistic and relatable.

And holy moly can Berkley write. She starts the book off with a bang and it doesn't slow down. I didn't want to put the book down, but a girl's gotta get her beauty rest! I read it so fast, I didn't even have time to add it to Goodreads and give updates! Her descriptions are spot on. She gives us action, which makes your heart pound. She gives us romance, which makes you sigh. She has funny characters that literally make you laugh out loud. And she has dark characters that make you fear for the good guys. Berkley was able to pull every emotion I can possibly think of out of me. She makes it fast paced, exciting, and fun.

I really enjoyed the storyline. This book has an arc that is complete. I am not a huge fan of cliff hangers, especially when there is a long wait between books. The story takes us through the battle and then delivers us an ending that is plausible and realistic. And, while there is certainly room for another book, I don't feel like it left me so out in left field that I am annoyed. And the story is full of surprises that you really do not see coming. And something that really stands out for me is that her characters form a band of misfits that come together to fight for what they know is right.

I am really looking forward to The Bastard King. It cannot come out fast enough for me!

5/5 stars!

The Premise:

Dylan finally feels like he has it all. He's back home in the human realm with his beautiful girlfriend, loving grandparents, and some crazy powers over the elements. But Dylan's temper is climbing out of control, and along with the bursts of rage come new powers he wasn't expecting.

Kera has these new powers, too. She's seen them before and knows what they can do if kept unchecked…and it’s not pretty. Plus, going back to her home realm, Teag, would hasten the process. Kera is determined to keep her one true love, Dylan, safe on Earth, but when the barrier between the human realm and Teag weakens, allowing monster-like creatures to pass over, Kera becomes desperate to protect her home.

When Kera is kidnapped and imprisoned in a corner of her world that no one has ever escaped from alive, can Dylan overcome his unbridled powers—and himself—to save her?

My Thoughts:

Before reading The Fallen Prince, I read the first book in the series, The Marked Son, mainly to get a feel for the flow of the story and the series itself. I'm not usually a YA or Teen reader ... mostly given my grandmotherly age! I was very impressed with the both the storyline and quality of the writing. However, I was worried I wouldn't be able to do the review justice so, today, I am turning the review reins over to my 14 year old grandson, Dawson. When I asked him if he'd like to help me review the book, his response was "Wow, Grandma, how did you get the book early? I've been waiting for this every since I read The Marked Son." - Talk about scoring big grandma points!

Dawson's Thoughts:

The Fallen Prince is even better than the first book in the series. Dylan is a teen we can all relate to, wanting to do his best and live happily with his family, friends and especially his girlfriend, Kera. His new powers make him vulnerable and his temper sometimes gets the best of him. When Kera must choose between staying with Dylan on Earth and saving her own native world, it's not a decision she wants to make. Yet, she's honor bound to care for her home and the people in it. The action, especially Dylan's attempt to rescue Kera, was very well written and packed full of excitement. The best way to sum up my impression of the book is to ask: How much longer will we have to wait for the next book?

Fast paced and full of twists and turns "The Fallen Prince" will have you anxiously turning each page.

In the second installment to "The Keepers of Life" trilogy it's all about control. Dylan is pretty happy to be back in the human world where everything is a lot less complicated or so he thought. New powers have started to manifest themselves and Dylan is becoming overwhelmed worse yet Kera is keeping secrets.

I couldn't put the book down. The writing was beautiful and the world building was nicely done. I really enjoyed learning more about the characters and the realm of Teag. It was also nice to see more growth in both Dylan and Kera as well. They both had to face some difficult challenges in this book and I really admired them and how they handled things. They may not have always made the best decisions, but they never gave up. They stuck to their beliefs and always tried to do what they believed was right.

I highly recommend the exciting sequel to "The Marked Son" by Shea Berkley!

The Fallen Prince (I don't quite get the name. How did he fall? Don't you have to rise first? He was never an accepted Prince in Teag, but I digress) started out really good for me. I was ready to give it 4 stars while reading part 1. Then as soon as I started part 2, it went downhill. It was almost as if a different author wrote it. At first, I really liked the author's writing style. The new character Wyatt was great; a sarcastic, wise ass, ready for danger, muscular, tough, military guy. He was funny, witty, yet full of charm. I love when I really like new characters. I enjoyed the jokes (one that I remember came when Wyatt first learns of Dylan's powers and is trying to help him control them. He puts on a fireman suit to protect himself from Dylan lighting up, while Grandpa has the industrial strength hose aimed and ready to go. Dylan says, "Why do I feel like I'm in a Jackass movie waiting for the stupid to drop.") Also, there was the perfect amount of figures of speech that made the writing better. I don't know what happened though because by part 2, we had been introduced to Wyatt's brother Reece, who I also loved, but only because he was the exact same character. Literally, I could not tell them apart. Come to think of it, Leo and Dylan have pretty much the same personalities too. My first thought was actually that Wyatt was just like Jason, who died in the first book. All five male characters are interchangeable. They all say dude, bro (they live in Oregon, not So Cal) and crack jokes 24/7. I love Dylan's grandparents, and whereas they played a big role in part 1, they were nonexistent in part 2. Part 2 also was way overkill with figures of speech on every page and they went from good to major eye roll worthy.

Anyway, let's get down to business. In The Marked Son Dylan is dumped at his grandparents house by his mother. He quickly adjusts and makes friends with two guys named Leo and Jason. He also finally meets Kera, the girl of his dreams (literally as he has shared dreams with her his whole life) and acquires his first powers. Both he and Kera are only half human, with one parent being from the land of Teag, which one gets to by crossing a barrier, like a portal, in Dylan's backyard. He has to rescue Kera from Nevar the big baddie and succeeds. The Fallen Prince starts out all rainbows and butterflies with Kera and Dylan living with his grandparents. As I said previously, I love them. I don't know how old grandpa is supposed to be, but he's pretty damn funny and a total bad ass. The barrier is breaking down and beings can cross at will. It would not be cool if crazy creatures from Teag entered the human realm, so Kera decides to go try and fix it. She comes back, but is kidnapped and brought back to Teag where all of a sudden a day later war is raging, and of course Dylan, with no plan whatsoever, charges in to save her. While there, they have to fight some dark soul creatures and a new foe with great power. Then, all hell breaks loose in Teag as well as another land called the Unknown, where all of the creatures or things that are different, or unliked are sent. It sounds like the second part would be more exciting and it was fast paced and had lots of action, yet I still enjoyed the parts of the story in the human realm better.

I don't know what it is about the last few books I have read, but they have all had brooding, 'woe is me', male leads. Wolf in Scarlet, Hunter in Spirit, Day in Prodigy, and now we have Dylan whining about how it is all his fault there is a war and all these people are dead and blah, blah, cry, cry. At least a few times every chapter he goes into a rant (although through his inner dialogue) and we have to suffer through his self loathing.

I want to talk a bit about Dylan's powers. They remind me of the powers the Merrick brothers have in the Elemental series, but combined. Earth, fire, water, and air are the elements Dylan can control, as he is one with nature. He can make the trees do whatever he wants and the earth open up and swallow someone. He can make the wind howl. He can make it rain or strike things with lightening. I'm assuming he controls all forms of water. His newest power is fire. He can create it, hurl fireballs, and basically spontaneously combust at will. His powers of fire and earth are way cooler than Gabriel and Micheal, but I think Chris and Nick have him beat on water and air. Either way, his powers are pretty formidable, and they should be being the heir to the throne of Teag.

So, we already know all about our main characters Dylan and Kera, our secondary characters Leo and the grandparents, and like I said we get introduced to a set of brothers (or clones really) Wyatt and Reece. Also back for round two are a couple players I didn't really like in the first book, and still do not care for, Bodog and Lucinda. Several characters that you think are dead return in one form or another, the most shocking being

There were a couple little inconsistencies and improbable things in the story that bothered me. At one point Kera is talking to her pet dragon and Dylan and Grandma are right outside the door trying to get in her room. How do they not hear it walking around trying to hide and her talking to the dragon and trying to stuff him out the window? Yet a few pages later Kera can hear Grandpa talking to Grandma from their room. Grandpa hears something on the roof and assumes it's racoons, but again he didn't hear a freegin dragon in the house? The big baddie mentioned in the above spoiler, tries to kill Lucinda, but Leo jumps in the way and takes the shot. Um...why? She can teleport, she could have just left. These 7 sisters are all attracted to Wyatt and Dylan says be careful if they are Lucinda's friends they probably aren't all human. Ah duh. No one in Teag is! Wyatt goes to Teag originally out of curiosity of a magical realm and to help Dylan. He is there for like a day and all of a sudden is leading their soldiers during the battle? Seriously? How ridiculous is that? I understand he is a military guy, but these people don't even know you and they don't like humans. No way they put him in charge and actually follow his lead. Baun is blind when he is freed, a little bit later he 'meets Dylan's eyes then Kira's'. So all of a sudden he is not blind anymore? Um how? I know I nitpick, but little continuity things really bug me.

So all in all, I would give part one 4 stars and part two 2 maybe 2.5, averaging out to a 3. I liked the first half more than the second, which is usual, and the regular human realm better than the magical one. I am hoping The Bastard King will be better than both of it's predecessors.

‘The Fallen Prince’ by Shea Berkley is book 2 in the Keepers of Life series about a parallel world right on top of ours.

Dylan is back home on Earth, and the battles have seemed to have ended for now. Dylan finds himself exhibiting some powerful elemental powers that he struggles to control. Kera is concerned because she’s had similar powers and knows how dangerous they can be. When Kera is kidnapped, it’s up to Dylan to go after her with his wobbly grasp on his new powers and a group of friends that may find themselves in over their heads in the world of Teag.

The plot involves hot headed and lovesick teenagers. If that appeals to you, you may like this series. I liked it but found some elements a bit wearisome after a while.

This book takes off shortly after the end of the first book, The Marked Son. Dylan and Kera are in the human realm, avoiding returning to Teag as many don't want Dylan to return. Lately, Kera has been acting strange and suddenly run off leaving Dylan wondering whats wrong. His connection with Kera usually allows them to know how the other is feeling, but lately its been weaker. One afternoon, she does just that, but Dylan chases after her, but has lost her in the woods while he begins to get "hot under the collar" and the next thing he knows he's a walking torch. He's a danger to everyone if he can't control his anger which seems to make the new power grow and show itself. His dreams are haunted by a man he knows all too well to him, but unsure of his true intentions. He is left with a mind full of "what ifs" and thinking things aren't what they seem.

If that isn't bad enough a giant pink spiky worm/snake pops out of the ground... Things are going from bad to worse ans they realize the creature is armor plated and human weapons can't get past it's armor. Good thing for Dylan and his new power, the creature has already had a hold of his grandfather, but when it goes for his Grandpa that sets Dylan off. He holds his sword in hand, and it erupts in flames and he lunges for the tongue reaching out slicing it off. This only makes it MAD and Dylan and Kera work hard to get rid of this creature form Teag. This sets everything else into motion.

Kera ends up visiting to Teag only to find thing are not as they should be. Some of her friends believe she has abandoned her people and that they aren't any better off than before. There is an evil loose that is reeking havoc all over, and with a new leader, who is turning their world to ashes. Her friends show her whats going on when shrill cries send them running into a scene straight out of a human horror movie. They help save the people, but the danger isn't fully gone. This evil is hungry and it seeks to take over. They fend them off with the help of Kera's new magic. She reluctantly returns to the human world to try and iron things over.

More creatures are coming into the human world, causing havoc, one was sent after and captures Kera sending her back into Teag, but not into a good part. As she learns where she has been sent and tries to find shelter she's lured into a deadly trap. Lulled into a false sense of security and snared by a dark creature in The Unknown. She succumbs to a dream where she is visited by the same man haunting Dylan, he offers to help her, but her dreams grow darker in nature and she realizes the horror of what is truly happening.

Everyone mist fight to save both the human and magic realms before the evil leeches out and ruins both worlds, but can Dylan learn to use his powers and accept his birthright as the ruler of Teag, save Kera and restore peace or will this new enemy be more powerful then Dylan and send Teag and eventually the human world into darkness? You have got to read this adventure to find out!!

I have been anticipating The Fallen Prince for a LONG time, ever since Shea published The Marked Son I knew things were only ramping up. Dylan and Kera together have to harness new, untamed dark powers, stronger then any they've faced yet. Along they way the encounter new dangers, new allies and an unforeseen evils being let loose. Shea builds up the adventure again with more creatures, more mysteries and more danger. The fallen Prince doesn't disappoint in this continuation! I gladly give this story 5 stars for getting me hooked again and I'm (again) anxiously awaiting the third story, The Bastard King.

I received an ARC of The Fallen Prince in exchange for an honest review!

As The Fallen Prince is the second book in the Keepers of Life series I suggest reading book #1 The Marked Son (book #1) first it'll help you understand the back story. In brief; Dylan has had a fairly harsh upbringing and ends up living with his grandparents. He has been dreaming of a beautiful young girl for years, and is obviously pretty shocked when he sees her whilst awake. Dylan learns that Kera is from another realm; Teag, where firsts live (they are magical people who have strong powers, known as the keepers of life). The Marked Son is about Dylan's introduction to Teag, the love story with Kera and the battle for power.

The Fallen Prince starts with Dylan and Kera living in the human realm. They are trying to come to terms with the dramatic events of book #1 and learning to control their new powers. If this wasn't enough of a problem there's also the various spiky monster attacks and the reappearance of a certain dragon!

The main thing I noticed was how almost everybody seems to have an agenda when it comes to Dylan and Kera. They are continuously manipulated and used by people (from Teag). Things are getting progressively worse in Teag - Dylan is both feared and yet needed. The power balance with the firsts is off and darkness is coming...!

Dylan has to work hard to control his emotions because when he gets angry or upset he risks loosing control of his powers and setting things on fire. I really respected the faith he displays in his love for Kera, and the value he sees in their relationship. It makes him seem older than 17.

Even with their connection Kera can hide her feelings from him if she needs to (he hasn't mastered this skill yet) and is hurt when she does. Both Dylan and Kera's actions are motivated by their love and desire to protect the other. Kera is scared what will happen to him if he returns to Teag, so she hides various things from him. Dylan doesn't want to scare her and tries to hide his pyro problems.

As with The Marked Man the secondary characters play a big part in the story and provide some brilliantly funny moments! Dylan's Grandparents are hilarious; his Grandmother has a knack of appearing and interrupting him and Kera from getting too friendly. His Grandpa enjoys soaking him with a hose (read the book and you'll see what I mean) and demonstrating his fighting skills. Cin is as wonderfully weird as ever - I seriously wouldn't want to cross her - And, oh Leo!?

Without giving too much away a certain King makes an appearance (in one form or another) and has a big influence on the upcoming story. I'm very much looking forward to reading book 3!

4 Stars in my Sky!

My fav non-spoilery quotes:

•He's a delusional, mythological creature on a magic mushroom high.
•"I've been dragged into a parallel realm where there are talking sticks, a magical prince, and a dwarf who acts like a mood ring. Flying monkeys make perfect sense."
•"It is like comparing a kitten to a grown lion. Same heart, different skills, and right now you are a tangle of kittens in need of better skills."

Read it.

Buy a copy and read it. I like the first book. It had the ‘Curse Workers’ premise to it. A young man shouldering great power in a harsh world. I would not rate it as I could not find it in me to bring down a fellow writer. I understand the dilemma face by authors when they chart the course of their books. Their decision, most of the times, defines not only the book but also them as authors. It is an excruciating experience. A decision of a lifetime that could not be reverse.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s her book and she could do whatever she wants with it. But I just wonder. I was enjoying the book until it happened. The problem occurred two to three chapters way from the end; when, they had to close the portal made by Jason. Nothing wrong there…yet. It goes sour when Baun, Dylan’s crazy father, asked them to give him their powers so that he could deal with the situation. But Dylan objected and commended his father to give his power to Kera. No problem there. The problem occurs with the revelation that not only does she need to close the portal but also kill Jason and absorb his powers. If you don’t see this as a problem than you don’t have a problem and I feel sorry for you.

Ok…Maybe Dylan made an innocent mistake so that Shea could set up the story in the last book where Kera goes mad and wants to be queen of Teag. Then, Dylan has to kill her to restore order. The catalyst for her going cookies and cream craving for power was the power and absorbing more of it. I don’t know. Just speculating. (I don’t know where the evil warlock, the one Dylan killed whose name evades me, plays in this storyline.)

Even so, Shea Berkley destroyed Dylan’s character. In doing so, she disintegrated the empathy the readers(especially mine) had with Dylan.

She could have separated ‘killing Jason’ and ‘closing portal’ to two events. Shea could have Dylan kill Jason and absorb his powers and then let Baun and son give Kera their powers to close the portal. Or another option would be both Kera and Dylan giving Baun their powers but binding him to a promise that he will give them back when the deed is done. He is a first and is bound by his words. Am I wrong?

I mean you don’t let or worse tell your girlfriend, even if she’s a serial killer or even if she killed before and it’s safe to say Kera killed before, to kill your psychotic friend(or ex-friend). And worse still, he’s the way he is because of you whether you did it unknowingly or with good intentions. Mistake or not, it’s just wrong.

Or it could all be just me. Or I was dreaming. Or I misunderstood the whole situation. Or it could be that Shea Berkley just made her biggest blunder in her career. Live and Learn.

Book Review- The Fallen Prince by Shea Berkley

Dylan is back living with his grandparents after his battle in the realm of magic, Teag. He is trying to figure out how to survive his guilt and his nightmares that plague him now. Kera, now, lives with him in the human realm. They are working together to understand the new powers they have received from the battle. Since they killed Navar and Fallen, the evil sorcerer and his follower, Dylan has been struggling with the new things he can do. He and Kera have acquired Navar and Fallen’s powers. Dylan can produce fire. In fact fire can engulf him, yet not burn him. He can control it with his mind and emotions. Kera also has new powers she is learning to control and as she uses them, they get stronger.
After the battle the magical realm is thrown into a worse state. Navar is dead, but the Firsts refuse to change there ways. Dark magic and evil are running rampant. The shield between the two worlds is developing holes and magical creatures are escaping into the human realm. Kera and Dylan are trying to protect the humans as they fight what makes it through.
Kera is then taken by one of the creatures and taken back to Teag. Dylan has to find a way to save her. He has to go back. He has to decide what he will do. His banished father is asking Dylan to help him escape his prison. Dylan is fearful that anything he does will make things worse. Kera is his main priority and he knows he will do anything to save her.
This the second book in the Keepers of Life series. I was really confused as I read this book. I did not read the first in the series, so I felt like I started watching a movie halfway through. I did not really know the history between Kera and Dylan. The Author only hinted upon the details of what happened. So I had a hard time following the storyline of this book. I would give it a 3 out of 5.

(Rating: 4.5) In The Fallen Prince, the important word is "change." Dylan is changing, he now has cool powers but he also has this increasing rage which he has to learn to control along with his increasing fire power. Kera also faces change, realizing what's happening to Dylan but not telling him everything in fear of her homeland of Teag. Trust becomes an issue as Dylan begins to doubt her. When she is kidnapped and held in a place where none have survived to return, Dylan embarks on another adventure where the increasing evil of the Teag and the Unknown where Kera is, seeps out into Dylan's world. Can Dylan learn to control his new powers, retrieve Kera, and finally take his place as the Prince of Teag?

If the fast pace of The Marked Son kept me firmly in my seat, the increased pace and complexities of The Fallen Prince had me wishing I could read faster. Reading from a guy's pov has really given this series a unique feel as we experience and see everything Dylan does. When paired with Kera's pov, her third person pov helps us keep our perspectives as 'visitors' while we still gain the advantage of watching what happens to her. This split in pov took some time to adjust to in the first book, but I now like it and feel the story has depth and feeling from this combination of narration. Favorite characters like Lucinda (can she be any better?) and Pops, only increased my affection for this series and for Shea Berkley's creative mind and writing. I can't spoil the creepy, wicked fun of this second installment of The Keepers of Life series, so all I will say is, Dylan and Kera are only getting better and their tale more addictive. Bring on book three! (http://www.readergirlsblog.com/2013/0...)

One day, a couple years ago, I sat by the pool on my vacation, burning to a crisp in the sun as I completely devoured an ARC I’d been sent to read. The book, The Marked Son, was the first book in a brand new series from an author I’d never even heard of before.

Now, I think the fact I allowed myself to fry pretty much says it all, but I really couldn’t put the novel down and when I did finally finish it, I was totally left wanting more.

Well, it took a while, almost two full years, but I finally got more.
And I must say; the second installment, The Fallen Prince, was just as enjoyable to me as the first had been; hence my 4 out of 5 star rating.

Despite the long break between books, I was easily able to fall right back into the wondrous and magical world Ms. Berkley created. From endearing characters to a very entertaining storyline filled with action, suspense, romance, and tons of surprises, this book has everything I look for in a book to read.

I must say, my favorite aspect of this book was the fact that even though most of the book is spent in perilous situations in the midst of a war, it was still funny. I’ve found sometimes, in the midst of all the seriousness, it’s tough to bring comedy into the mix, but Ms. Berkley did a wonderful and very realistic job of doing it.

Overall, I thought The Fallen Prince was very much worth the wait and like after reading the first; I’m now excitedly awaiting the next installment in the series, The Bastard King.

Disclaimer: This book was supplied to me for review as an ARC by the publisher and everything I have said is of my own honest opinion. I have not been paid to review this book.

(This review was originally posted at My Library in the Making.)

The Fallen Prince opens a few days after the events in The Marked Son, as Dylan struggles more than ever to fit in the human world with his new, uncontrollable powers that endanger everyone around him. He and Kera also have their hands full, thanks to the weakened barrier between the human world and Teag, leaving deadly creatures free to cross.

Let me tell you now: this sequel has outdone its predecessor—and to think that one was already really good. There was action right off the bat, something that other readers might have looked for in The Marked Son, and the stakes were higher than ever. When Dylan's power threatened to reveal his true identity to the humans in town, even his loved ones were on edge, wanting to keep him safe while fearing for their own lives.

Something I didn't like was how Dylan constantly pitied himself and whined internally—yes, internally, but we still suffer it because the book was written in first-person. I also hated how Kera didn't trust him enough and kept secrets from him, thinking ignorance would keep him safe.

Like in the first book, Shea Berkley's writing was as beautiful and descriptive as ever. I didn't have problems seeing every ripple of wind, slope of the land, or the fire that engulfed Dylan. And I hope that will continue on until The Bastard King, which, thankfully, will come without too much of a wait!

MY FAVORITE PART was Dylan's first training with Wyatt :))

I received a copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is 5 stars, as was the previous book in this series, The Marked Son. I really enjoyed the first book and this was a great follow-up book. While I don't think it is really a necessity to read the first book, I would highly recommend it.

Dylan and Kera are living in the human world and trying to control their new powers and deal with the death and destruction that happened at the end of book one. They can feel something is changing and something dark is going to come.

This book picks up soon after The Marked Son ends. Dylan is out of the hospital and Kera is living at his grandparents house with him. Dylan is trying to control his emotions which is getting harder and harder. Grandpa decides he needs some discipline and we meet Wyatt for the first time. Wyatt is a great addition to this book.

Kera is really confused and is having a hard time dealing with having powers. She has only ever had the ones her father has let her borrow. She finds Reece in the forest and heads back to Teag. She doesn't know anyone else that can help save him. She starts to hide things from Dylan and things start getting strained until a Tri-top comes to kidnap her.

Teag is war torn and in serious need of a new leader. The people of Teag don't want to accept Dylan as the new King.

All in all, I loved this book. There are some really awesome secondary characters that really make this story and in general has a really different spin on a paranormal story. I highly recommend this book and can not wait for the next book to come out, The Rising King.

I loved the first book, The Marked Son, which I read 2 years ago. So, it is safe to say it took me a while to catch back up with the book. I felt a bit lost, but I think if I had reread the first book I wouldn't have had as much trouble. It's a complicated world, so I think I would have felt more at home quicker within the story.

I also felt a bit frustrated with what was happening in the beginning of the book. Their journey throughout the human realm in the first of the book makes sense and you know it is foundation necessary for the growth of the characters. Still, I think I would have liked this part perhaps a bit shorter or perhaps a bit more mixed with the characters of the fae realm.

The second half of the book is where the most exciting adventure begins. You are back in faerie trying to save people without getting yourself killed. You know, the usual fare. ;) Still, you question the motives of several of the fae and learn that others are surprisingly trustworthy. I do like the characterization of many of the secondary characters as well as the main protag, Dylan. However, I found Kera a bit disjointed. There was a reason for this, but I would have liked to have felt that there was something consistent in the background and I just didn't feel that. I still liked her character, though.

I give this book 3 stars and I really recommend rereading the first book if you read it a while ago. If you haven't read that first book, then do so before you read this one. It really does need to be read in order.

Love the cover, like the previous book (The Marked Son book 1)i will give a 5 out of 5 stars for the cover and content also. What i love about this book is that is so original, from the supernatural powers to the plot of the book.
This is the second book from the series, and yes it does connects with the previous, to understand this one read the first one (it's worth it). In this book Dylan and Kera try to get used with their new powers and learn how to deal with them. Their big challenge is not letting the powers change them in any way, or hurt any more people around them. Dylan finally starts or tries to trust his grandpa helping him control his power, but in the same time he loses trust in Kera and he does not like doubting her.
Kera tries to help Dylan by hiding some things from him thinking that will keep him alive and away from trouble, but in the end she realize she can not deal with them alone or she will love Dylan.
The book is full of adventure, love and surprises, rarely you find a book with all of this combined and it flows, is just amazing book, don't take my word for it, reall of the others amazing reviews and the stars.

Though this book was much better than the first it was still a little on the slow side to begin with, but I guess it was needed to build the characters up a bit. Still it could have been condensed a bit.

Most of the book however is completely full of twists and turns that you entirely know who to trust. More creatures come out into the works and there is full out war and destruction in the land of Teag.

Kera and Dylan both go on their own journey, but whilst a lot is spent at the beginning in talking about Dylans irrational anger problems, they suddenly disappear not long after he comes back into Teag. No fiery mention of them, but that could be because he is so busy dealing with so many other things.

I do hope that Dylans rather does turn out to be the good guy, and I have you can't help but love the disgusting little Bodog. I do rather like the creature.

REALLY looking forward to starting book three in the series and finding how everything finishes.

This one picks up not long after the first book. They defeated one evil only to get another. Both Dylan and Kera have come upon new powers. Kera never really had her own but now does and Dylan has to learn to control his or everyone could be in danger. But it's totally a kick-ass power to have.

Uh-oh the wall between the human and the first realm is deteriorating letting creatures cross over. One of the crazy creatures takes Kera to a place nobody wants to be in. With the help of his friends old and new they embark on the journey to save her. They realize that things in Teag are not how they left them. Someone that is supposed to gone is wrecking havoc and they have to rely on the help of someone who shouldn't be trusted. I like that surprise, I didn't expect that.

I liked this book. I thought it was a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next book to see how things go for our gang of misfits. :)

Dylan has returned from Teag, barely escaping with his life and Kera by his side. He has burned many bridges in the magical realm. Unfortunately, he doesn't fit in the human realm either. His powers grow each day drastically, and his anger and self-pity make him dangerous to the people around him.

Kera wants to keep him from her home realm of Teag. She knows that his powers will continue to grow and he may be changed by them, and no longer be the boy she loves.

They are in an unwinable situation. How can they continue to exist in the human realm while powers grow and secrets are kept from each other? Fate always has a way of forcing it's hand when Kera crosses over the realm and is taken prisoner.

Shea Berkley does a wonderful job of word building. She knows how to pull in the reader and keep the suspense and intrigue coming. She does a great job with her descriptions, you can picture events in your head.

This book contains violence.

A free digital copy of this book was sent by the publisher in exchange for an honest review

I went into The Fallen Prince with no knowledge that it was actually the second book in the series. By then, I was already 1/3 into the book.

The good thing about The Fallen Prince was that you don’t have to read the first book in order to understand it. The author draws us so deeply into the fictional world that it is impossible to put down. It was just that compelling. However, I thought that Kera and Daniel’s relationship was too cheesy and cliche.

I rated The Fallen Prince as DNF because while I liked the book’s concept, I want to read the first book first to be better drawn into the story. I look forward to finishing The Fallen Prince as soon as I acquire a copy of The Marked Son, the first book in the Keepers of Life series.

Thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for the arc of The Fallen Prince by Shea Berkley! The story begins with Dylan struggling to control his newly found powers, while Kera tries to fit into the human world. The realm seems to be seeping into the human world and Kera is captured and taken back to Teag. Dylan and his friends go to Teag to rescue Kera. The dialogue surrounding Bodog and Wyatt made me chuckle, actually all interactions with Bodog made me chuckle - very fun! "Right now, the only normal one of us seems to be Bodog, and he's lit himself up like Casper the friendly ghost." Full of action and adventure and I love the snark in this book:
"How'd you get out? "
"I used magic."
"I tried and it didn't work."
"Me, too."
"I'm better at it."
Shea Berkley is a creative author and the dark souls she conjured up are ominously creepy. I love this book!

I'm sitting on a HUGE fence with this book. That bothers me slightly, as I did love the first book no questions.
There were so many parts that were great. I love fantasy, so having dragons, dwarves and magic in the story always captures my attention. I also loved some of the characters, and not necessarily the main ones. Take Lucinda, for example. Her love and commitment to Leo is so honorable and endearing. When others doubt it, you can't help but adore her.
But there were times I felt like there was just too much going on all at once. I often wondered, "how did we get here?"
So for everything I liked, I can match with something I didn't care for. This is definitely one of those stories some will love and others will not.

This was a nice refreshing read.

It was awesome to see how the story progresses from beginning to end. The story moves at a really nice pace from the beginning to end.

Shea Berkley has created an interesting world with interesting characters. Once I started reading I could not stop until the end and even then I didn't want the story to stop.

I cannot wait to see what Shea Berkley has got planned for the future.

Oh how I tried!

I saw reviews for the 3rd book where a bunch of people didn't realize it was in a series and liked it so much they went back and read the others.

So I figured things HAD to get better. But they didn't. It was brutal. The characters all turn into jerks. The end.
