Brides of the Bohnari #1

Resisting the Alien Commander

Rate this book
Horek

As Commander of the Bohnari guards, my career is the one thing I care about more than anything. Even more than the mating fever afflicting our males that causes us to slowly descend into madness unless we find mates.

When the crown prince of Bohna negotiates with one of the Earth leaders for willing human brides, I have no interest in one. No matter the risk.

Until one of the females triggers my mating fever to burn out of control, and all I desire is Quinn. Except another male wants her as well. I’ll have to convince her she’s my heart’s fire before the madness consumes me.

Quinn

Born and raised in the bottom tier, I know the upper tier will do anything to keep us down. When the President announces that we’re the only women eligible for the Bohnari bridal lottery, I’m suspicious. Not that I have any interest in becoming a bride and leaving my mother—and only family left—behind.

Except, somehow, my name is called, along with my best friend’s.

Once we arrive on Bohna, I manage to catch the attention of one of the younger guards. Too bad it’s the Commander who sets my blood on fire. When I learn the truth about the mating fever that affects him, I’m not sure I can trust what Horek feels is real.

This was such a wonderful start to a series! I am so excited to read more from Erin Hale and so excited for what is to come (*cough* Olivia and Janik). Thank you Literally Yours PR and booksprout for the early copy 🩷

I am already a little bit in love with this series! I love the cast of characters revealed so far, and I am desperate to read more!

Quinn. What a gal! I loved her and her interactions with her friends. Her and Olivia make me miss some of my old friends I do not talk to anymore. I miss being a girls girl 😭 I need Olivia’s story ASAP! As soon as I met Janik I was a little bit suspicious and a lot of bit in love. I am so excited for Olivia and Janik’s banter!

Horek. OH BOY!! Horek is one of my favourite time of MMCs. Non-human, unique anatomy (😏), and starts a little resistant and but in the end falls head over heels. I love how he approached romancing Olivia slowly and respectfully, even if I am desperate for more romance scenes with them!! I also loved the different take on fated mates, and how mating someone who wasn’t fated was not shameful. Sometimes fated mates is presented as the only option, and it was a nice detail 🥹👉👈.

I also need more Bannik content! He was such a sweet guy and deserves the world 🥹 ALSO ALSO ALIK?! What is up with him??? Does he have a book? Will he have a book! So many unanswered questions! I am utterly enthralled 😭💜

PS. Thank you Erin for taking the time to put a disclaimer to remind people you can find content warnings before chapter one. You are a real one 🩷

Good start, and the plot thickens

Quinn wins a lottery that she never entered and was sent to Bonhari in the hopes of finding a match with a Bonhari male. Horek prefers to focus on his career as Guard Commander instead of trying to find a mate-- but he can't keep his eyes off of Quinn. But if Horek's mating fever has chosen Quinn, how can that really mean he cares for her?

The Bonhari need mates, without them they literally die, yet neither Prince Alik nor Commander Horek want a mate. Horek's mother did a number on her son's self-esteem, but I don't understand knowingly making a choice that results in pain and death. The drug they use to suppress the fever only works for so long and its clear they need a lot more than 20 humans to keep their people from going extinct.

One of my favorite parts of the Tavikh series is the world building, and that's very much present here. Even though the plot gets too two-dimensional at times, the overall intrigue continues to hold your attention. This is, after all, a fairly short read.

I hope book two in the series gets more into the meat of the rebel cause, in addition to explaining why Horek's mother is the way she is. I still think Resisting the commander is an excellent start to the series - though the reading experience would benefit greatly from a proof-read, the bones of the story are good.

Looking forward to continuing the series. Four stars.

Genre: Sci-fi Romance
⭐️ 3.5/5
🌶 2/5
🧠 3/10
Cliffhanger: 4/10 (Setup for book 2)
Noteworthy: Book 2 of an incomplete series of interconnected standalones. Dual first-person POV. Available on KU.

Okay so this was actually a little better than I expected. Often times first books that are on the shorter side in series like this can just be info dumpy. This has a nice plot with conflict and a little drama with the romance. The MMC gave alpha vibes without being over the top. I really expected a golden retriever type. That was a pleasant surprise.

There is a lot of meat left on the bones of this story. It could easily have been 50 more pages that would have enhanced it. The conflict with the MMCs mother could have been fleshed out and we could have been shown more of the growth between the couple. We could have even gotten some more info on the rebels though I'm sure that's coming in the next book. It just skipped a lot of good stuff.

I'm definitely continuing with this series though and look forward to book 2.

Resisting the Alien Commander is book one of author Erin Hale’s new Brides of the Bohnari series.
Earth has been split into two tiers upper and lower. The woman of the Bohnari mate lotteries are always lower and MFC Quinn has just had her name called for the current one being held, along with her best friend Olivia.
What’s strange though is Quinn never submitted her own name, only to find out later her mother had, and who manages to convince Quinn to take a chance on a future for happiness with her own home and family.
MMC Horek, Commander of the crown princes Bohnari guards has a career that means more to him than finding a mate. When the new lottery brides arrive he finds his focus continually drawn to Quinn but he isn’t the only Bohnari interested in the new arrival. Bannik one of the guards is too.
As Horek tries to keep what is undoubtedly his mating fever staved off with a plant based powder of kanet, it becomes increasingly more difficult when he is in Quinn’s presence, and she is not unaffected by him either but believes Horek’s interest is only because of his mating fever.
With rebels to contend with and some of the Bohnari people unhappy with Prince Alik’s rule the tension is ramping up in this enjoyable Sci-Fi romance which had excellent writing, and a storyline that introduced engaging characters who I look forward to following in their own stories as the series advances, and next up is best friend Olivia’s.

Resisting the Alien Commander

I'm loving this new series by this author. It feels a little more complex than the Tavikhi series. Both are great.

I think this universe is supposed to take place a couple hundred years in the future when income inequality on earth has gotten even worse than now. Like most readers, I easily compartmentalize “reality” and “fantasy”, but given the slow collapsing of the illusion of a world order in RL, it makes reading fiction seem less fictional. This statement by one of the characters,

“But if what I get is a husband who treats me with kindness and respect and a life where I’m not working myself to an early grave for nothing more than scraps, then I’m perfectly content with that.”

Normally, I would have no problem keeping this idea separate from everyday life but for some reason it rang really true about a lot of women's experience. I think it's just part of the collapsing of the illusions of love and equality. What we've been calling freedom isn't feeling much like freedom anymore. As if our freedom was always in a cage and the cage is being revealed to be really small. The book doesn't make these connections necessarily, just my brain did.

I'm looking forward to Alik getting someone. And maybe Janick depending on if he gets a redemption arc. And the “monster” romance with the Krijese.

4.25 stars. Quinn, the female human lead, is a low status human on Earth. Offered the opportunity to move to a new planet with her best friend and become an alien’s bride, she accepts the offer (though she worries what will mean for the mother she’s leaving behind).

Horek, the male alien lead and commander of the armed forces, never expected to have a bride but he finds himself irresistibly drawn to Quinn, and shocked that his mating urges are nearly uncontrollable in the way of his people when a fated mate is found. Now he just has to convince Quinn that he really does want her whilst keeping the planet safe from the rebellion that wants to oust his cousin, the king, from his position.

This novella is dual POV, well written, and a sweet and steamy, alien/human, fated mates, sci fi romance. I enjoyed Horek’s gruff presentation and the care he showed Quinn. I appreciated that he sincerely considered staying away because he believed he was too dour for her. I enjoyed Quinn’s courage and her willingness to ask questions and demand answers when she found information lacking. I enjoyed the relationship development and the steamy intimate moments when they got there. I enjoyed the ending and the set up for the next story in the series.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for no-nonsense commander Horek!

Resisting the Alien Commander is the first book in a new series by Hale ( Brides of Bohnari). The planet Bohnari's population is facing extinction due to a lack of females. An arrangement is made between a governing body of earth and the the crown prince of Bohnari that would allow human women to come there. Quinn is one of the lucky few who are given this opportunity via a lottery system. But, it means leaving her life on Earth behind. Horek is the Commander of the Royal Guards and while he takes his job to heart, he needs someone to make his heart their job. From the moment they meet Quinn and Horek will have you rooting for their happiness together. Hale does a great job at setting the stage for building yet another complex and beautiful Alien world in this first instalation. It's fun, spicey, fast paced and filled with handsome Alien men.

Great start to a swoony new series

I loved Quinn and Horek’s heartwarming, alien-human, fated mates, healing romance. It had a good balance of humor, love, real life issues, painful pasts, light suspense, and spice. The Bohnari race has a lack of female births and as a result, they form a treaty with Earth for willing brides from the bottom tier. Quinn is a human woman who did not enter the lottery but her mother entered her. She chose to accept once she was selected as a bride of the Bohnari. Horek is a Commander on Bohnar and cousin to the crown prince. He is serious and stoic with no desire for a mate. Until he sees Quinn and his mating fever increases and he realizes she may be his heart’s fire. This well written story included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, good world building, and a captivating storyline. I’m excited to read more in this new series and learn more about Bohnar especially with the set up for the next story. 4.5 stars

Well written with fab characters, clear world building and exciting plot

This was an engaging series opener and I love the brief tie-in to the Warriors of Tavihk series. Of course, you don't have to read that series to fully understand this one but it's also great, and complete, so I definitely recommend checking it out ;) Quinn is a human gal that won a spot on the bride lottery to go to Bohna to see if she can find a mate. Horek is a commander and cousin to the king. He can't keep his eyes off of Quinn but knows he's too work oriented to deserve a mate. That's really his momma's voice telling him that... These two are fire together but there are things in the way...like rebels and mating fever ;) I really enjoyed how this one unfolded and read it in one sitting. Expect to get caught up in the drama, humour, suspense and spice when you crack this baby open. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book :D

The Bohnari have approached Earth to request females to save their dying population. With no females being birthed for a generation, without intervention they are in trouble. Quinn and her friends are among the first twenty to be picked. Their new home is beautiful but the strong, intense, gruff Commander of the guards holds her attention.

Horek had been adamant that he did not want a female or to be mated until he set eyes on one of the little human females. Now his mating fever burns nearly out of control.

A wonderful steamy romance with a few cultural misunderstandings, rebels causing unrest and a sweet HEA. This book can easily be read as a standalone but there is an overarching story which is better enjoyed if read as a series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

I read this over the weekend and it was exactly what I needed for relaxing stay at home weekend. This story is everything I enjoy about Alien Romances! Interesting world, captivating MCs, and otherworldly escapism. I enjoyed the bit of angst as the MCs relationship sky rocketed! This is the first book in the new series - Brides of the Bohnari. There are some mentions of couples from Warriors of Tavikh ( I have not read yet) but it was not needed to understand and enjoy the story. This book does a fantastic job setting up the series while also giving the MCs the HEA. This story had everything I needed to cozy up and have fun reading.

4,25/5 i really like Erin Hale in general, she basically started my obseesion about dreaming about gorgeous alien men worshipping your every move.
But ... idk as a book itself, it was good, but as a begining of a new series it felt a little ... empty. Lots of info, they were just insanely attracted to each other but there weren't a build up of feelings, at least on Quinn part, for me. It just happened, but I liked that she insisted on getting to know each other at least. I wish we could have seen it more in the book.

Also sceptical about the Krijiese series, as they weren't described as attractive AT ALL by the Tavikih mates but let's see, I'm hype up for Kala and a good redemption + step mother story.

Buckle up for the first book in the Brides of the Bohnari 👰.

Captivating, steamy, and engaging, and as this is the series first book, the storyline will continue in future books and all I can say is let the world building continue!! Quinn and 19 other human women have come to Preska, the capital of Bohna. They are to be mated after the female population has dwindled and the Bohnari face extinction. Horek is the commander of the Prince Alik’s armed forces in Preska and cannot turn away from his heart’s fire (fated mate). Throw in Rebel forces, Bohnari mating heat/spikes😮, and the love of a good man - what more could you ask for 🥰!!

So....where can I put my name in for this bride lottery? Asking for...me...myself...because I need a Bohnari husband. Please!

I immediately fell in love with the grumpy and stoic Commander Horek. He was very insistent that he neither wanted nor needed a bride. And he held out for as long as he could, but he finally lost the battle against his heart and the beautiful Quinn. The scene when he finally lost control was SO HOT. Nothing really happened but oh boy you could feel the sexual tension and heat between them.

There was some mystery and angst that we don't have all the answers for just yet. And I am HYPED for the next book and couple. I can't wait to see more of this planet and the Bohnari people.

This is the first book of the Brides of the Bohnari. And it was nice to have a tiny bit of the Tavikh Warriors involved in this story since I read all those books and this is a new series. Anyway Horek and Quinn's story is a very wonderful story. The are twists that keep you on edge. I love that Quinn and her friends get away from the hell on Earth and get to go where they are treated better and help keep the Bohna Alien race from becoming extinct. It's of course an adjustment for the human females. And there's a cliffhanger at the end that promises of the next story coming very soon. Erin is a wonderful Alien Romance author. She does not disappoint. I highly recommend her books they always have HEA for each couple. With a twists that creates suspense.

Horek is literally such a cutiepatootie! I love my stoic yet soft for his girl type of man 🩷 The slow burn yet the instant attraction was so cute because like they both knew they were meant for one another but were in denial lol. "I am fully confident that you are my heart's fire, Quinn." HOW CAN YOU NOT SWOON!? The level of denial that Horek was in was adorable because he still got jealous yet he's trying to act nonchalant. I can't wait to keep reading more of this series and see how all the Lottery Brides find their mates 🖤

Once again I am falling in love with these alien men! Erin Hale writes these men with absolute perfection. Thank you for allowing me a copy and so sorry for reviewing late!

This was another short and sweet novel by Erin Hale! We finally get to dive into the world of the Bonhari as they welcome their first cohort of human women who traveled to their planet to become brides and hopefully help stave off the Bonhari mating fever and their dwindling population.

Quinn and Horek were both initially reticent, the former to have to leave her home and mother, and the second to find himself a bride. But their obvious chemistry had them both reconsider, and they finally gave into their desire.

I loved them both and can't wait to read about the others in the future books. The story does end on a cliffhanger and I'm looking forward to seeing how the whole situation evolves!

This book was such a sweet and loving story. Did however feel like there are some parts that were missing, however it did not take away from the story. I loved that humans were put in a lottery willingly for a chance at a better life. The commander was such an amazing man, who loved the FMC with everything he had. The FMC was a strong woman, who at times let her fear rule her. Which I could see myself in her and that is why I love reading amazing books. This book ended on a slight cliff hanger for another female but it wrapped up the love story very well. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to jump into Alien Romance.

Erin Hale continues the story of the Bohnari met in her other series featuring the Tavikh. This series, Brides of the Bohnari is just as adventurous. Quinn and her friends who are of the lower class win a lottery to go to space to marry Bohnari males, copper colored scales males with teal colored hair, whose women can no longer produce children. Quinn’s mom had surreptitiously signed her up knowing her daughter would never leave her otherwise. As soon as Quinn arrives, she is attracted to Cdr Horek, a serious man fighting the mating fever but not wanting to mate. Boy, does he get over that quickly as their attraction can’t be reigned in! Wonderful story, great characters!

Resisting the Alien Commander is book one of the Brides of the Bohnari Series.

Horek and Quinn have great chemistry together, but Horek is resistant to a mating for his own reasons. However, over time he does seem to embrace the thought of a mating more but now needs to prove himself to Quinn. I liked that she wasn't willing to just roll over and accept his change of mind. She wanted him to prove that she wanted her for her and not for any other reason.

It does end on a bit of a cliffy for another couple, but this one does get summed up perfectly.

Great start to a new series

I have loved meeting the Bohnari and especially Alik, but this story was a great branch off from the Tavikh Warriors. It still seems so odd that this planet is so much more advanced than their neighbors. I love them both though. Horek is a great character and while he doesn't really want a mate, he doesn't really fight it either. Quinn is strong and her friends are a great support. I can't wait to see how Olivia and Jarek make out too! Nicely done.

2.5 stars. Rounded up.

basically, Alien men are forced to become drug addicts to keep from going sexually mad. (Joke)

But I found it was entertaining, I felt like there was a lot left to be desired writing wise. The characters occasionally fell flat, and it felt rushed. And as some people pointed out on Amazon, needs WAYYY more proofreading. It actually became a game to me how many times I could find spelling mistakes... I think this story would benefit from some rewriting and making it longer. But if you enjoy something somewhat readable with a fun plot and nice smut go ahead.

Resisting the Alien Commander is the first in a new series by Erin Hale. If you’ve read the Warriors of Tavikh series and were curious about the Bohnari, the aliens from another planet with whom they trade, now is your chance to learn more! This is a sci-fi romance with a HEA, but there’s also a story line about the Bohnari that will most likely span a few books…and I can’t wait to learn more! Both Quinn and Horek are lovely characters, filled with depth and an amazing chemistry.

Following the same line of The Warriors of Tavick, now we get to see the Bonhari falling hard for the human females.
Prince Alik secured an agreement with Earth to receive human brides .
They have no recent born females and worst ,have a mating fever that's fatal.
Horek is the commander and as soon as he scents Quinn all bets are off.
This series promisses to be Epic, the author lefts enough hint to an overarching plot rich and often complex and I can't wait to read more!

This is the first book from Brides of the Bohnari.

Oh boy I literally screamed my lungs out 🤩. It’s a short novella. Quinn and Horek what are you guys. I mean their spicy steamy moments 🥵. All those banters between Quinn and her friends. Hotel’s obsession over her. And oh boy his nickname for her "my heart’s fire" and I melt here 🫠. They way he bring her mother for her happiness. And oh boy the way it ended I just can’t wait for next book 😍😍

Erin Hale’s writing is pure magic. Whenever I find myself stuck in a reading rut, her books are the perfect remedy—fast-paced, fun, and totally addictive. She has this effortless way of pulling you into her world, making her stories the ideal palate cleanser while still delivering all the emotional highs.

I absolutely loved getting to see more of the Bohnari people and exploring a new corner of Hale’s ever-expanding universe. The worldbuilding just keeps getting better, and I honestly hope this series never ends. I flew through this book way too quickly—and I hated that it ended because I wasn’t ready to let go.

The angst, the tension, the conflict—it’s all here, and it’s absolutely delicious. I’m obsessed.

Absolutely loved this new spinoff on the human brides program. We get a lot of world building and it’s an exciting world for sure.
Horeks and Quinn’s love story is chefs kiss. Both surprised by love when they weren’t really looking and both overcome by their emotions when it really hits.
There’s everything in this story including a dash of heat and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!.

Hearts Fire

Ooh wee was this a cute book. Horek is an alien commander who swears he doesn’t want a mate. But when he meets Quinn, a human lottery bride all bets are off. She sets off his mating fever and he knows she is his mate as his blood burns and all desire is for her. But there’s a rebellion brewing and Horrk is torn between duty, an overly critical Mother and his need for Quinn. You will have to read the book to see how it all works out.
