She’s what every mother needs. But can you trust her?
Since my husband Lawrence died it’s just me and our sweet baby girl Jordan. It’s so hard raising her alone. Then Sophie shows up at my door. She says she is Lawrence’s sister… and she seems like a blessing in disguise. But with her in my house, looking through my things, it’s going to be difficult to keep the secrets about my marriage hidden...
Charlotte didn’t recognize me. That isn’t surprising. She seems frantic, and I know she’s not sleeping. I hear her tossing and turning while I rock her baby to sleep. When Jordan stares up at me with those big blue eyes, my heart melts. Charlotte doesn’t deserve such a gorgeous child. Not after what she did.
It’s clear to anyone that Charlotte isn’t coping. All she needs is a little push to send her over the edge… And then I’ll finally get what I really came for.
Both of these women are liars. One of them is a killer. Who is really in danger in this house?
Perfect for fans of The Housemaid, The Perfect Marriage and The Girl in Seat 2A, this totally addictive psychological thriller will have you up all night!
Emily lives in the mountains of North Carolina and loves hiking with her dogs--only when she's not thinking up twisted tales, that is. She loves books that keep you up long after you should be in bed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of What Every Mother Needs by Emily Shiner. I have read several books by this author and she did not disappoint! The story was a good one. It was a bit predictable but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of it. It you like domestic psychological thrillers, this one is for you. Make sure you check it out!! Publication Date May 30, 2025 #NetGalley #Emily Shiner #Bookouture
Charlotte needs help. She has a six-week-old baby, Jordan, and her husband Lawrence has been dead for four of those weeks. Dealing with the sudden death of her husband while she is a new mom is beyond difficult, and the lack of sleep and support is getting to her. Not to mention the worry - she doesn’t know how she’ll afford to take care of their daughter, as Lawrence did not make her the executor of his will. They had separate banks accounts, and their fancy house and her BMW were in his name. She has to go back to her modest job as a bank teller in two weeks, but after daycare costs, they won’t be left with much.
Enter Sophie, in the form of a knock on the door. Charlotte had just put out an ad for someone to come in a few hours per week to do a bit of housekeeping, and Sophie saw it and decided to show up. She also has a surprise - she is Lawrence’s estranged sister, she is also newly without a partner, and she’s ready to move in and take care of her niece. Charlotte wasn’t wanting live-in help, or help with Jordan at all, but at the time, she was too tired to say no to Sophie’s offer. She opened her home to this woman, at the same time opening a can of worms.
At first, it’s nice having someone to clean up and cook for her, but soon Charlotte sees that Sophie is getting pretty obsessed with Jordan. She wanted a housekeeper, not a nanny, but who is she to tell an aunt to stop loving her niece? As her suspicions grow, she searches the internet to find out more about Sophie, but can only find her perfectly-curated business site. When she comes home one day and finds Sophie in her room, she finally finds her voice, and tells her to leave. But as Sophie said on day one, it wasn’t going to be easy to get rid of her…
This book is written from the points of view of both women, plus an unknown woman from the past. It was easy to see where the story was going, but that didn’t make it any less fun to read, and there were still plenty of other shocks. The ending was good but abrupt; I wish I’d been given just a little more, and that’s pretty much my only complaint. I guess that shows how enjoyable this book was to me though. If you’re a fan of this kind of psychological/domestic thriller, don’t sleep on this one! 4.5 stars, rounded up.
(Thank you to Bookouture for inviting me on this book’s tour! “What Every Mother Needs” will be released on May 30, 2025.)
Kudos to Emily Shiner for this page turning domestic thriller. This is one story that you should absolutely not try and guess what’s going on as it had numerous unexpected twists throughout the story. Simply well written, easy to follow, and will keep you at the edge of your seat as you continue to navigate through the chapters and try to figure out who’s actually the antagonist in this story. But what happens when everyone has secrets? When the characters you grow to love you grow suspicious of? When the characters you despise you begin to feel sorry for? Yep… this story brings it all.
Charlotte is a new single mom of an infant daughter, as her husband is recently deceased. Left with no support, she’s desperate to find help when suddenly her mysterious sister-in-law shows up on her doorstep. This should be a blessing in disguise, right? Well.. Charlotte never knew Lawrence even had a sister so who is this mysterious woman? Again, desperation throws her common sense & red flag radar completely out of the window and she invites Sophie right on in.
Overall, a recommended read that I highly enjoyed. Never a dull moment! I’ve read other books by Emily and have enjoyed them all so far. Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
This was quite the page turner. I did guess the big “twists” in this book but it didn’t stop me from enjoying it. Charlotte needs help with her newborn after her husband dies. A mysterious relative her husband never mentioned magically shows up right when Charlotte needs her most. An angel sent from her husband? Or someone who will make her life a living hell? What I didn’t expect from this book was the whiplash from my opinions of the characters! Out of no where your opinions are turned upside down and you see things in a whole new light.
WHAT EVERY MOTHER NEEDS BY EMILY SHINER. 5 ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨s. Release date set for the 30th of May 2025. Emily is one of my go to authors and I will read everything and anything she writes. This book is amazing. I had a sense of what I thought was going on then my mind was blown. I see alot of twists coming but this book got me good and proper. Amazing writing. Perfectly paced. Bingeable. I already can't wait for the next book. Congratulations on yet another 5 star book.
Big thanks to Bookouture for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. What Every Mother Needs is a slow burn, twisty thriller. Charlotte is distressed and needs some help. Her six week old baby, Jordan is not sleeping, her husband Lawrence has just died and now she has no idea how she will survive financially. So she places an advertisement for a helper. Arriving is Sophie, Lawrence’s estranged sister. She moves in and connects with Jordan while doing some light housekeeping. But both women are hiding secrets and now the repercussions could become deadly…. A tension filled thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. I did get irritated with Charlotte near the beginning, like seriously who lets a stranger move in claiming to be a sister without any proof….. But in true psychological thriller style there’s an explanation for everything. Moving on from this little niggle I did end up enjoying the book as a whole. I wonder what Emily will give this fan next.
I really wanted to love this book. The plot had so much potential! Yet I found that the chapters were filled with the same sentences over and over again. I swear if I had to read that Charlotte regretted letting Sophie in her house one more time - I was going to lose it! After the 100th repeat of the same thing - we get it! I also really dislike when the authors feel they need to explain such mundane things to you. “The sky is sunny and blue with clouds. There would be no rain today. It only rains when the sky is dark and grey and you can’t see the sun shining”. Like really???? There was a lot of that in here. Also some editing errors. Sophie spoke of waiting for “Sophie” to wake up - I think you mean Charlotte. Other typos too that distracted me from a book I was already getting extremely irritated with. Charlotte regretted letting Sophie in her house, after all! Then the ending just flew by. I didn’t even realized it was the ending! Nothing solid. We are left to assume what happened - but with the behavior of these two women throughout the book I can’t make a definitive choice on what might have actually gone down! I don’t mind a little mystery and don’t need it to be tied up with a pretty bow - but this ending left too many assumptions! And we all know what happens when you assume. And an ass is what I felt like at the end of this book! I will try another one of her books to see if I like it better as she seems to have great reviews otherwise. Maybe it was because it was written in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene? Beautiful dedication to those affected by the way!
Normally I love Emily's books. This one just didn't do it for me. There are only 2 main characters and I didn't feel any attachment to either of them. It was hard for me to get absorbed into the story. Unfortunately, this just isn't my favorite book by Emily Shiner. That being said, I love her books and I look forward to reading the next one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
As a new parent myself, I found this book both relatable and deeply unsettling. While there are plenty of authentic parenting moments that resonated with me—the exhaustion, the constant worry, the small joys—it also dives into every new parent’s worst nightmare.
The story kicks off with a pushy in-law who doesn’t just come for a visit, but moves in permanently. From there, the tension slowly builds as the lines between family, boundaries, and control begin to blur. The narrative alternates between the wife’s and the sister-in-law’s perspectives, which added depth and gave the story an interesting duality—each voice layered with emotion, history, and a growing sense of unease.
While I had guessed most of the twists early on, I still found the author’s writing style compelling and enjoyable. She has a way of pulling you into the characters’ world, making even the quieter moments feel charged.
The ending did fall a bit flat for me—I was hoping for more impact or resolution—but it still left me wanting to spend more time with these two women and their complicated dynamic.
Overall, it’s a tense, well-written domestic drama with an edge of psychological suspense. Definitely worth a read, especially for parents who can relate to the chaos and vulnerability of new parenthood.
Thank you to Bookouture and #NetGalley for the ARC ⭐️
I read an ARC from NetGalley. I felt that this book could have been way shorter. I also felt that the ending was rushed and out of character. I never try to guess the twists, but I felt like most of them were obvious.
What Every Mother Needs didn’t ease me into the story—it yanked me in by the wrist and whispered, “Trust no one,” before slamming the door behind me. This is domestic suspense at its most deliciously unhinged.
From page one, I was side-eyeing everyone. Charlotte is hanging on by a thread, grieving, exhausted, and trying to keep her head above water while raising her baby girl alone. Enter Sophie, with her soft voice, helpful hands, and a smile that practically screams red flag. She says she’s family—but is she the kind that shows up with casseroles… or chaos?
Let me tell you: the tension in this book is so thick you could cut it with a baby monitor. Emily Shiner writes like she’s planting landmines on every page. Just when you think you’ve figured out who to trust, BOOM—another twist, another secret, another moment that makes you want to yell, “GIRL, DON’T GO IN THERE.”
Both women are liars, and one of them is dangerous—but good luck figuring out which is which. The dual POV adds serious psychological depth, and watching the unraveling from both sides? Chilling. It’s like watching a game of emotional chess where someone’s definitely going to bleed.
If you love thrillers where the stakes are personal, the villain is hiding in plain sight, and motherhood is both weapon and weakness—this one’s for you. Twisted, tense, and totally addictive.
Thank you to Bookouture for providing this advance copy via NetGalley for my honest, voluntary review. #WhatEveryMotherNeeds #NetGalley
I’m a huge fan of this author! I enjoyed this book. It’s an easy to read, fast paced, with a lot going on kind of book. I really enjoy Shiner’s writing style. It’s straight and to the point. There isn’t a ton of “flowery” descriptions, and with the chapters in both Sophie’s and Charlotte’s POVs, we get inside the head of both characters.
There’s a third type of POV we get here too, though at first it’s not clear who it is. What we learn is who Lawrence really was – the type of man that he was. He was manipulative and very controlling. He wasn’t even a main character in this book but I really did not like him. I wasn’t sad that he wasn’t around!
I guessed at one of the reveals/twists. But there were some others that were coming that I didn’t know about or could foresee coming! That’s what makes Shiner’s books so great. There’s always something that you don’t see coming. The ending wasn’t my favorite. It felt like it ended somewhat abruptly and kind of open ended, but I feel like Shiner may have made this choice on purpose.
Overall, this wasn’t my absolutely favorite Shiner read, but it’s a good one and one that I will still recommend!
I was invested in the story right from the start. I loved how the story was pieced together from not only the POV of the two main characters, Charlotte and Sophia, but also from someone simply described as “her”. While the story was mainly set in the present, the chapters set in the past helped with character developments. I kept changing my mind about both Charlotte and Sophia throughout the book, where I would side with one, and then the other. The twists throughout the book kept me wanting to read more and the more I read, the harder it got to put the book down until the last 25% where I ignored my family and finished it. The only negative for me is that I wanted a further epilogue but this could just be because I was enjoying the book so much that I didn’t want it to end.
Emily Shiner is one of my favourite authors and I look forward to reading more by her.
Charlotte is a struggling mother of a young baby, Jordan. Her husband, Lawrence, has been dead for just over a month, and to ease the burden of running the house and raising a baby, she places an ad looking for a housekeeper.
In enters beautiful and glamorous Sophie, who announces she is Lawrence’s long estranged sister. She’s perfect around the house, tidying, cooking, and great with the baby, too.
However, Charlotte has secrets and if Sophie finds out, the consequences can be disastrous…
This is a great psychological thriller!
Both women had secrets. One of Charlotte’s was revealed pretty quickly at the beginning, but the other ones took me by surprise.
I knew I couldn’t trust both women, they were both lying through their teeth. The question was: who was worse? I couldn’t warm to any of the women, but I felt sorry for the baby.
This tense thriller will have you wondering all the way to the end.
Thank you Bookouture & Emily Shiner for this read!
Yet another Shiner read that starts out strong and I just couldn't get enough. This book was dark and emotional, twisty and unsettling!
I binged this in just a few short sittings and if it wasn't for my uni right now I would have binged in one go!
I love a book that has mixed POVs and this book has it! Between each view of our protagonists you'll be questioning the actions of some and wanting to yell at another!
Overall another great read by Emily Shiner and I look forward to what is next!
If you're after a new thriller author whose books are totally addictive and has a bit darker content than your usual popcorn thriller - this author is for you!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 What Every Mother Needs by Emily Shiner is a fast-paced, twisty domestic thriller that hooked me from the first page. When new mom Charlotte, reeling from her husband’s death, hires help to care for her newborn, she’s stunned when a woman claiming to be her late husband’s sister shows up—someone Charlotte never knew existed. Is Sophie really there to help, or does she have a darker motive?
Tense, and full of twists some predictable some not , this is classic Emily Shiner: layered characters, sharp pacing, and a plot that keeps you second-guessing everyone. A throughly entertaining read for domestic thriller fans
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review
The first half of the book operated very slowly in terms of building up the story and providing background from the characters. In this sense it took me some time to push through this one. The characters of Sophie and Charlotte were a bit naive from the beginning and to some extent the character of "Her" was a bit easy to pick out. So the ending was a bit more predictable.
About half way through it picks up and then you are reading quickly just to know what happens. However I didn't like the ending. I had to read it twice to realize that i hadn't missed something - it infact just ended. Which was a bit disappointing. However I would still read another Emily Shiner book if given the chance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookcouture for the eARC in exchange for an honest review
Charlotte is a recently widowed mother of a 6-week-old baby, dealing with exhaustion, stress, and the tension of her sister-in-law moving in. She never even knew her husband had a sister but she needs all the help she can get. I found this book extremely engaging. It's a very good thriller.
This early copy was received via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I have read a lot of Emily Shiner’s books and I have honestly enjoyed every one. My favorite part of this one is the cat and mouse dynamic. At various points, I was wondering who the true villain was.
I absolutely did not anticipate that ending! Wow! There were so many little twists throughout the book, my head was spinning. Both the female main characters were unhinged, which definitely pushed the reader to not want to stop reading. This is definitely worth the read and I highly recommend it. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the arc of this book. This is set to be released May 30, 2025.
I enjoyed this book for the most part, but there were so many parts that made me feel like all the women of this story were weak-minded and very naive from the beginning. That being said, I didn’t mind that, as many women would do the same actions that took place in this book. The twists and turns felt a bit predictable but nonetheless, it still kept me on my toes! There were a few minor writing mistakes as well, like the story would be in Sophie’s point of view but then say something about what “Sophie” was doing when really, it was supposed to be Charlotte’s name. And there were a couple grammar mistakes, but not a lot for me to be confused, just enough for me to notice.
All in all, this book wasn’t bad! If you enjoy thrillers that keep you guessing, you’ll like this one!
**disclaimer: I received this eARC from NetGalley and am leaving this review of my own accord. All thoughts are my own.**
What Every Mother Needs follows a new mom named Charlotte who becomes a widow mere weeks after giving birth. When her deceased husband’s sister, Sophie—who Charlotte had no idea existed—shows up at the door and begins taking care of her and the baby, it seems too good to be true. Are the sister’s intentions really pure and innocent??
The storyline was interesting and grabbed me from the description. However, this book didn’t do the best in playing out the premise.
For starters, who lets a strange woman into their home to help take care of their newborn baby? Also, things could have been done very differently for the correct mother to have the baby. But no, they were both too emotionally driven and not exactly of sound mind.
The characters weren’t very likable. They were too naive, obsessive, and weak. Plus the ending was rushed and didn’t really tie up the story. It let questions that weren’t answered.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced review copy.
What Every Mother Needs by Emily Shiner This book was intense. Every chapter only heightened the plot, and I devoured the words. I loved how this was told and how the story unfolded.
The premise was wild and weirdly realistic. I found the characters well done, although Charlotte and Sophie both had traits that made them likable. They also had many aspects that made them dislikable.
I think there is such a skill in writing characters that won’t be immediate fan favorites. Yet, dedicating the time to bringing them to life and playing their journey out regardless.
I loved the dual perspectives and how they helped bring this story to life. Emily is a talented writer who curated a story filled with twists and turns on every page.
A mother's love knows no bounds. And this book examined that element. Just how far would a mother go for their child? What hurdles would she overcome? Would you kill for your child?
I also love that Emily is donating proceeds from this book (in all forms) to natural disaster survivors. That is next level, and I’ve become a reader forever.
Publication date: May 30, 2025 Publisher: Bookouture
This sounded promising and to start off with I was intrigued. Charlotte's husband has just died leaving her with a small baby and she needs help. Sophie her long lost sister in law that she didn't know anything about turns up out the blue to help.
I found it bizarre that you would let a strange woman into your house and let her move in without hesitation. It was a predictable story from the beginning and I actually think the storyline is very weak. There were certain details that were just left unfinished. It was all unbelievable and silly to be honest. It left me with more questions at the end. Lots of things just happened with no explanation to them. It was a weak story.
Emily Shiner (favorite author) returns following The Nanny Share with her latest twisty domestic thriller, WHAT EVERY MOTHER NEEDS, cleverly written—a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Readers will go back and forth with their loyalties while reading. With this cast of unreliable narrators, hang on for the wild ride!
Two women. One innocent baby. One controlling dead man. Both women are liars. One is a killer. Which one is more dangerous?
About...
Told from three POVs:
Charlotte: Set in the fictional town of Reidsville, North Carolina, Charlotte is a recent widow raising a six-week-old baby girl named Jordan.
She is overwhelmed with caring for a baby and the housework. Unfortunately, she was not in Lawrence's will, so she may have to put Jordan in a nursery and return to her old job as a bank teller. They have nice cars and a home, but they have separate accounts.
She places an ad for help with household tasks, including cleaning and housekeeping, shopping, and meal planning and preparation. (no live-in position) However, the nursery will be off-limits.
Sophie: Sophie, a glamorous woman architect, shows up with suitcases at her door to assist. She claims to be Lawrence's younger sister (guess they were estranged). But she wants more than housekeeping and meal planning, she wants to spend time with Jordan (her niece, of course).
However, she suspects Charlotte may have deadly secrets. Did Charlotte kill her husband, and is she capable of raising Charlotte? She must stay around at all times to protect Jordan. She has an agenda.
Her: Throughout the novel, we encounter an unknown voice that provides readers with background information about Lawrence, starting eight years earlier. It is spine-chilling. He is controlling, abusive, manipulative, a liar, and a psycho. Did someone murder him? If so, you can see why.
Charlotte has never met Sophie and did not know he even had a sister. She does not like the idea of a stranger moving in, but she is desperate and worn down, and maybe this is what she needs. What Every Mother Needs—after all, she is the aunt and wants to help out and get to know her family.
As time moves on, Charlotte becomes more and more suspicious of Sophie. What is her motive? Why is she nosing around in her things and asking personal questions?
Charlotte is worried about keeping her secrets. Sophie is determined to learn more about Charlotte, Jordan, and Lawrence as she has her own agenda.
How will this dangerous game of cat and mouse play out? Which woman would you trust?
My thoughts...
WHAT EVERY MOTHER NEEDS is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat with its jaw-dropping twists!
The author keeps you in suspense with the dark secrets, and the characters are so complex that you are guaranteed to change your mind about each woman with more back-and-forth twists than a tennis match.
Each character's true nature is a mystery. You may find yourself sympathizing with one, only to switch sides in the next chapter. This book will keep you guessing and changing your mind throughout. From the first page to the last, WHAT EVERY MOTHER NEEDS is a rollercoaster of twists and turns.
The usage of the unknown HER chilling voice was brilliant and an excellent way for readers to get to know Lawrence and all his manipulative ways.
You may predict what is going to happen; however, you are not sure until the ending. It does not take away from the entertainment. Multi-layered, past and present, with wicked characters and dark humor, domestic thriller fans will enjoy it!
I think I have read all Emily's books, and I am a huge fan! I adore NC authors and support them. Highly recommend her backlist.

Review for 'What Every Mother Needs' by Emily Shiner.
Emily does it yet again!! I genuinely don't think she can make a book that I don't love!! Love, love, loved this book!!!! Absolutely gripping edge of your seat page turner!!! I mean just HOW HOW HOW can an author make each and every one of her AMAZING books EVEN BETTER each and every time???!?!?
The storyline was captivating and addictive from the first page until the last and I was completely invested in it. It was absolutely rammed full of lies, secrets, family, tension, drama, twists, suspense and everything you could ask for in a page turning psychological thriller. I just could not stop reading this absolutely addictive book from the first word to the last. Emily's extremely talented and evocative skills really brought the book to life and I was completely absorbed throughout. I lost count of the amount of times I promised myself one more chapter but that one finished in a way I just HAD to know what would happen next so I said just more and this went on and on until I ended up finishing it in one sitting!!! The location and atmosphere was absolutely perfect for this gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I absolutely love Emily's books and am guaranteed to be shocked every time I pick one up which is not an easy feat considering how many books I read a year so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Emily!!! One of the things I love about her books is that they can also be quite thought provoking and always end with MASSIVE BOMBSHELLS that I absolutely love and never do see coming. Emily's evocative writing drags you deep into the storyline from the first sentence to the very last and will keep you up until the very last word! THAT ladies and gentleman is a true sign of an absolute must read. I absolutely loved the ending which was definitely an unexpected twist which is just one of the reasons I love Emily's books, she manages to get me every single time!! I've said it before about Emily's books and I shall say it again!! I would absolutely LOVE to see this turned into a movie and would wait up all night to get tickets to watch it!!
I hope your busy writing your next book Emily as I just cannot wait to see what bombshell twist and explosive storyline you have up your sleeve for us next!!!!
Do not start this book until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
The characters were all realistic and strong and I was completely invested in them throughout. I love the fact that we got to see what was happening from the points of view from not just Charlotte the Mum of Jordan but also from Sophie who answers Charlottes advert and as with all her amazing books Emily weaves all of the chapters together with perfect timing until it all comes together with an explosive BANG!! It also explains absolutely everything which leaves no question unanswered at the end which is a pet hate of mine!! It also leaves you questioning what is really going on and gets you thinking more and more the deeper you delve into the storyline. Emily's multiple person perspective also really helps the reader understand the characters more making them more realistic to the reader. I was completely invested in all of the characters throughout and Emily's evocative descriptions really makes them jump out of the book and come to life in front of the readers eyes. All of the characters were multi layered with complex personalities which definitely made them all the more interesting to read about!!! Unfortunately, I really can not say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. I had no idea what to think of the different characters, what was really going on or where it was all leading which just goes to show what a talented author Emily is and I cannot wait to get hooked into her next psychological thriller which is guaranteed to be another page turner!! Regardless of what I thought about who, each character worked perfectly to make this page turning psychological thriller!!!
Congratulations Emily on yet ANOTHER huge success. This is the exact reason why you are in my favourite 5 authors list!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂!!
Overall another absolutely unputdownable, action packed, intriguing psychological thriller that will keep you up at night on the edge of your seat with a pounding heart from onw of the best psychological thriller authors EVER!!
My 4th book by Emily Shiner and wow this one packed a real punch. Very deserved 5 star rating!!!
Life for Charlotte isn’t exactly how she planned, being a widow after her husband, Lawrence, died and left her with their 6 week old newborn girl, Jordan. She knows she needs help, especially now she needs to return to work and so places an ad for help. The ad has barely been up 24 hours when a woman arrives on her doorstep, Sophie, who says she’s seen the ad and wants to help, she then drops the bombshell of being Lawrence’s estranged sister. Charlotte is desperate and so invites Sophie in. With her calm and efficient manner, she is just what Charlotte and Jordan need and soon enough the house and their lives are out of chaos and into order and Charlotte is happy knowing Sophie is family and that you can trust family, despite Lawrence never once mentioning her or even mentioning that he had a sister! However, Charlotte puts this down to the estrangement between them. Soon though Charlotte starts to feel that Sophie is overstepping her boundaries, especially with Jordan. When Charlotte comes home one day to Sophie in her bedroom and a canvas portrait of Charlotte and Lawrence defaced, she starts to question herself about Sophie and how well she really knows her and decides that she wants her out of her and her daughter’s life. Sophie doesn’t take this well but despite this Charlotte stands her ground and Sophie leaves. Soon after Charlotte has an accident and has no choice but to let Sophie back into her and Jordan’s lives as she needs the help once again. However, both Charlotte and Sophie have big secrets that could ruin both their lives and Jordan’s in turn. Will they manage to keep them, or will the lies and secrets get exposed and the truth about both women come out?!
Well, what a read this was!! I really liked the dual POV’s hearing the story from both Charlotte and Sophie, but I have to admit I thought both women were bad apples. I loved the chapters written by the mystery character “her”, I love a mystery character, and my mind was working overtime trying to figure out who she was, I did figure out who it was in the end but not what actually happened. It was something so shocking I would have never thought of it myself (which was great writing), I must apologise for how cryptic this sounds but my reviews are always spoiler free. I did feel my brain was in knots trying to figure out what had happened and what was going to happen, I was so baffled but at the same time extremely intrigued and I absolutely stayed up way too late at night not wanting to put this book down. I also really resonated with the letter at the end of the book by Emily Shiner, saying how writing this book was an escape for her whilst experiencing a very difficult local natural disaster. I found reading this book over the past week a really much needed escape from my real life so thank you Emily. Plus, I love the fact that Emily Shiner is giving 10% of everything she gets paid from this book into relief efforts for victims of natural disasters, what a lovely thing to do!
Ultimately Emily Shiner smashed it out of the park again with another fantastic 5 star read which I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers. I can’t wait to read what she writes next!
Thank you to NetGalley, Emily Shiner and Bookouture for my advanced reading copy. Out now.
What Every Mother Needs by Emily Shiner is a fast-paced, twisty thriller that hooks you right away and keeps the tension high. The alternating perspectives of Charlotte and Sophie create a chilling unnerving dynamic of cat and mouse where you're never quite sure who’s telling the truth — or what they’re hiding. The tension is palpable, especially as secrets unravel and the atmosphere in Charlotte's home grows increasingly claustrophobic.
From the beginning, it’s clear these women have secrets — and no one’s telling the truth. After the sudden death of her husband Lawrence, Charlotte is left to care for their infant daughter Jordan alone. Overwhelmed, exhausted, and desperate, she’s eager for help—so when Sophie arrives at her door, she lets her in with barely a second thought grateful to receive some much-needed help. Sophie claims later on to be Lawrence’s sister, but Charlotte just assumes she is there in response to her help wanted ad and doesn’t verify anything before inviting her into their lives. This decision becomes the novel’s turning point, but it's also one of its weakest and is what kept this from being a full five-star read for me. As a mother, I found it incredibly unrealistic that Charlotte would allow a total stranger into her home without confirming her identity, no matter how exhausted she was. Just no. I get being sleep-deprived and desperate for help, but I don’t care how tired I am — I’m not letting a random woman in off the street around my baby. The decision felt dangerously naïve and way too far-fetched when your child’s safety is at stake.
Still, once Sophie is in the house, the psychological tension escalates beautifully. Secrets about Charlotte’s marriage start to surface, and Sophie’s true motives slowly come to light. This back-and-forth is what really drives this book. You’re constantly second-guessing who to believe, which makes it a super fun, edge-of-your-seat read.
The other major issue for me was the ending. Without spoiling anything, it felt abrupt, like it just...stopped rather than concluded. I turned the last page expecting more, only to realize that was it. No real sense of closure, no big reveal that ties everything up. If there’s a sequel coming, then I’m all in — because I need to know what happens next. But if this is meant to be a standalone, the abrupt conclusion may leave some readers feeling unsatisfied and like they wanted more.
Despite these flaws, this was a fast-paced, wild ride with some great suspense and seriously tense moments. If you love domestic thrillers and dark twists, this one’s worth picking up and is an entertaining read. I’d absolutely pick up a follow-up if one is released.

The blurb spoke to me immediately—intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious. The book hooked me from the very first chapter with its premise and shifting POVs. The tension builds steadily, full of questions and moments that keep me guessing. If you love thrillers where no one can be trusted and the truth is darker than it seems, this one delivers in all the best ways.
The story follows Charlotte and Sophie. Since Charlotte's husband died, it is just her and their sweet baby Jordan. But it is hard to raise a baby alone. Then Sophie shows up, saying she is Lawrence's sister. Sophie finds Charlotte frantic and overtired. Sophie starts caring for Jordan; she believes Charlotte does not deserve a baby after what she did. But with Sophie in the house, looking through Charlotte's things, it will be challenging to keep the secrets hidden... Both of these women are liars. One of them is a killer. Who is really in danger in this house?
This fast-paced, gripping thriller pulled me in from the start. What made it so compelling was how it allowed you to step into the minds of Charlotte and Sophie—two women with very different narratives, yet each one feels disturbingly justified in her actions. They navigate a web of secrets, each convinced they know what’s happening while the reader holds the whole picture. Their perspectives are disturbingly logical in their own ways, which makes the tension even sharper as they inch toward a truth neither fully understands. The author builds suspense through the psychological unravelling of both characters. This is a chilling, twisty read where obsession, grief, and misjudgment collide. If you enjoy thrillers where the villain isn’t apparent and the truth feels like it’s hiding in plain sight, this one is worth your time.
