Escaping Victoria

Rate this book
Come home. He’s dead.
Four words throw Victoria back into a life that was never hers.

Dragged from her home after the murder of her entire family, six-year-old Emily Spencer is thrown into a world she must learn to navigate or die.

With a new name, a new family, and a new beginning, Emily Spencer becomes Victoria Townsend, beloved daughter of the Director of the criminal organization known as The Family.

As the memories of her old life fade, Victoria learns to survive her torturous home life by becoming a skilled mercenary. Leading the Townsend protection racket, she strikes out on her own and heads to England, leaving behind a wicked stepmother, an emotionally distant father, and a not so brotherly sibling.

Victoria’s hope to escape the clutches of The Family are dashed when she receives word that an important man in her life is dead. Returning to the Townsend compound in Nova Scotia, Victoria must overcome enemies, hunt for traitors, and catch a possible murderer; all while trying to protect the one person she loves.

Will Victoria be pulled back into the depths of deceit and powerlessness of a life she had no choice but to live? Will The Family crumble and take her down with it?

Blandford is back, Canada! That’s right, the author who brought us the dark On the Road series and the comedic whodunnit The Great Bloody North is now tackling the gritty underside of organized crime in the Maritimes. In this novel, she introduces us to the Townsend clan. And they are . . . something else.

Victoria is another strong female protagonist ready to kick butt and take names. Nicholas is protective and groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps. Together, these two would make for a fascinating story on their own. But add in captivating side characters such as a mother from hell and an assortment of bodyguards and staff and this delicious, rich, layered tale becomes absolutely absorbing.

As always, the author excels at creating atmospheric, descriptive scenes that envelope the reader in a cocoon of literary magic. She also doesn’t shy away from taboo subjects or morally grey characters. All told, this makes for an engrossing reading experience and I can’t wait for book 2 in the series. 5 stars.

Escaping Victoria encapsulates the innocence of six year old Emily with the woman she becomes. A story of the loss of innocence and family, combined with the pressure of becoming a player in a major crime organization pushes Emily into becoming Victoria - hardening her heart and fighting for her survival - even though she longs to run from the family that raised her.

This book was a quick read - simply because it was a great story. It held me captive, and I want Victoria to succeed. As a Nova Scotian, the familiarity of the places in this book was as thrilling as the storyline itself.

I can’t wait for #2!
