Kennt ihr den Podcast "Seelenfänger" vom Bayrischen Rundfunk? Falls nicht, gibt es gleich an dieser Stelle eine nachdrückliche Empfehlung für den Podcast, der sich mit verschiedenen Sekten auseinander setzt. Bislang gibt es sechs Staffeln, in der vierten Staffel beleuchten die Hosts Christiane Hawranek und Katja Paysen-Petersen die Yoga-Bewegung Atman sowie den darin stattfindenden systematischen Machtmissbrauch und sprechen mit Yogaschüler*innen des deutschen Ablegers „Deutsche Akademie für traditionelles Yoga“. In ihrem Sachbuch "Toxic Tantra: Machtmissbrauch und Manipulation im Yoga" steigen sie noch tiefer in ihre Recherche ein und interviewen andere Betroffene, was das Buch sowohl zu einer perfekten Ergänzung zum Podcast, aber auch gut ohne das vorherige Hören lesbar macht. Junge Frauen wurden in der Yogasekte Atman systematisch manipuliert, gebrainwashed und dem Guru Gregorian Bivolaru in Paris zu stundenlangen Tantra-Sex-Ritualen zugeführt. Besonders interessant fand ich auch das Konzept des Karma Yoga, durch welches Menschen als günstige Arbeitskräfte ausgebeutet werden. Gerade darüber wusste ich vor der Lektüre wenig. Die "DAtY" ist übrigens nach wie vor in Berlin, Freiburg und sechs anderen Städten in Deutschland aktiv, sie streitet viele Vorwürfe ab. Am Ende des Buchs klärt ein kleines Glossar auch über Sekten im Allgemeinen und Begrifflichkeiten in diesem Kontext auf, was ich sehr hilfreich finde. Ich habe "Toxic Tantra: Machtmissbrauch und Manipulation im Yoga" mit großer Spannung und wachsendem Entsetzen gelesen und möchte es sehr empfehlen!

The book I’ve been waiting for for about 15 years.
I left the original “yoga school” (MISA) that this book is about, around the early 2010s. Back in those days there was nothing like this out there. I am very glad this book exists.
I have also listened to the podcast that preceded it. And it is important to note that this is not a transcript of the content there. It is completely new material, with parts summarizing the basic tenets of the group and giving context for those who have not encountered the topic before. The book does a good job at this.
But the biggest strength of this book is the fact that these two journalists have never even heard about MISA and its subsidiaries before starting the research on their original podcast.
Back home, in Romania, where MISA is originally from they are tabloid-famous. For years the tabloids aired the dirty secrets of the group, including the most famous and possibly most scandalous parts involving drinking of urine, sex rituals in small or large groups, and the most famous of all: the sexual initiation of underage girls performed by the group’s leader. Nowadays, in Romania, the scandal has become old news for the most part. And the media does not really care about the day to day activities of the group. Sure, they still dedicate small segments to reporting the latest arrests of the group’s leader (which seem to happen over and over again), but not much more than that.
Then these two, young German journalists with their podcast about abusive groups come along.
I really appreciated the fact that they have an obvious understanding of what abuse and exploitation looks like, and they point these our at the right times.
As someone who has spent more than a decade detoxing my mind of their ideas I would have of course focused on different things, and would have told the story in a different manner. But it is in some respects fascinating to me to see the group with the eyes of an outsider. And not one that is easily dismissed, like the overly aggressive early 2010’s tabloids. This is proper, cool-headed journalism. At times a bit too conservative and prudish though. Which was slightly amusing to me. Because it felt a bit exaggerated. These are two adults with children, working in journalism for years after all. I don’t buy it that they are this naive. But hey, it’s a choice to write this story like this. In this respect the book is a lot better than the podcast. That was full of gasps and descriptions of being shocked by this detail or another. I am glad they toned that down for the book.
Other than that, the details they’ve managed to find are highly accurate. Some of the details are also unique to this book. Again, saying this as someone who has been interested in the group in particular for the past 15 years. Even I was surprised by some of the details. Not necessarily by the details themselves, which are consistent with the ideology of the group that I was familiar with. More in the sense that the authors managed to get down to this level, and find out details of such highly secret practices within the group.
CW: Some of these details are quite difficult to read. Watch out for those parts if you are in any way affected by either this group in particular or in general by other forms of coercion or sexual abuse.
My heart goes out to both the people in the podcast and those telling their stories in this book. None of you deserved to be treated this way and I wish you all the best in your journey of recovery.
And lastly, if you read this as someone who is currently still a member of MISA or one of it’s groups world-wide, yes you should read this too. Yes, even if it’s in German, and you don’t speak that language. There are solutions to that. (I do hope there will be translations though.)
This is also why I wrote this review in English. As a sign for those still in there and in doubt.
There are no secret course materials revealed in the book. You don’t have to be afraid of that. What is revealed are things about the actual spiritual path MISA offers its members and that you should be aware of for exactly this reason.
After all, the truth is something every spiritual seeker should be interested in.

Ich bin großer Fan des Seelenfänger-Podcasts und im Rahmen der neuen Staffel darauf aufmerksam geworden, dass es ein Buch zur vorherigen Staffel gibt. Besonders die Recherche rund um den Missbrauch in der Yogasekte Atman hat mich bewegt, auch weil ich mich beruflich mit Yoga und Spiritualität beschäftige. Beim Buch hat mich vor allem interessiert, wie sehr es dem Podcast gleicht und wie die Umsetzung gelungen ist.
Nach der Lektüre würde ich sagen, dass beides völlig unabhängig voneinander funktioniert. Im Buch werden drei andere Personen begleitet als im Podcast, auch wenn sich ihre Erzählungen natürlich ähneln. Wie auch im Podcast werden die drei persönlichen Geschichten dazu verwendet, die Machenschaften der Yogasekte aufzudecken. Je nach den Erlebnissen der Betroffenen verschieben sich die Schwerpunkte. So ist mir persönlich erst im Buch wirklich bewusst geworden, wie umfassend Karma-Yoga für die Ausbeutung missbraucht wurde. Auf der anderen Seite fand ich die Statements der Betroffenen im Podcast teilweise stärker, einfach, weil man die Stimmen dazu hatte. Ich würde daher sagen, dass beides gut funktioniert, man aber wenig Neues lernt, wenn man eines der beiden Formate bereits konsumiert hat.
Inhaltlich ist die ganze Sache natürlich erschreckend. Es ist tragisch zu sehen, wie leicht die Betroffenen in die Fänge der Sekte geraten sind und wie schwer es war, ihr wieder zu entkommen. Das Buch ist spannend erzählt und hat mich von der ersten Seite an gefesselt. Dabei schaffen es die Autorinnen, empathisch an die Sache heranzugehen und gleichzeitig journalistisch sauber aufgearbeitet alles zu erzählen.
An einigen Stellen liest es sich für mich sprachlich ein wenig wie ein Podcast-Skript; Gedankensprünge oder der Spannungsaufbau sind so formuliert, dass sie gesprochen vermutlich besser wirken würden. Für das Verständnis des Buches fand ich das jedoch nicht besonders störend.
Insgesamt würde ich das Buch auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen. Es arbeitet auf der einen Seite spannend den Fall Atman auf, liefert auf der anderen Seite aber auch eine gute Referenz dafür, woran man Anzeichen für eine Sekte erkennt und wo man aufpassen sollte.

Super interessant und eine tolle Fortsetzung zum Podcast- leider vom Schreibstil her kein Favorit, da sich einiges ständig wiederholt hat (ständig „wir sitzen im Winter 2024 vor einem Café- safe zehn mal im Buch vorgekommen).
Eine art Überschrift mit Ort+ Jahr wär hier in meinen Augen die bessere Wahl gewesen. Auch die Menge an englischen Begriffen hat mich ab und zu gewundert, nicht weil ich ein Problem mit Englisch habe, sondern weil vieles davon sehr simpel ins deutsche übersetzt werden können (zB Red flags= Warnsignale, consent= Zustimmung…. das englische hat sich hier etwas wahllos und sinnfrei angefühlt).
