For most of this read I felt as though I had an entire herd of runaway cattle dashing around in my guts. This book starts off full of suspenseful tension, this was a book that took the wind out of my sails, this is a book that hit me square in the guts, time and again. This world is brutal. This world is grim. This world is so divided into "haves" and "have nots", social injustices and survival is a daily battle. The king, omnipotent, stripping magic as easily as underclothes. There are agendas within agendas, plots within plots, secrets within secrets, a less than benevolent goddess, politics, scheming, mystery and a slow burn that eclipses many enemies to lovers reads, friendships and found family, all tantalising, all very arousing, inflaming, adding to quickening of my pulse rate. The authors hardly gave me breathing space with the curveballs they kept hurling my way. This is a book that keeps on giving, churning emotions, raw anxiety, decimating my very soul! This is a book I couldn't let go of, this is a book I'll carry around forever in my heart. Or what's left of it....Oh dear heavens, THAT ending???
Cold, hungry, miserable Rose is desperate to get out of the slums, not so much for herself, for her sister Kay. Once, a long time ago, they were revered, part of the inner circle, until a lie, a falsehood, cast them out of privilege. Stripped of their magic, things went from bad to worse after the death of their mother. Rose, compassionate, kind , with a heart of gold, puts everything on the line to be part of the upcoming trials, called the Retterheld. To sneak into the temple and beg the goddess Etta for a chance to reclaim all that was taken from her and her family. Her chances to get past guard and wolf, slim to none, but she secretly does it anyway. So when her name is called, she has to face a very angry and hurt Kay who confronts her, her desperation is so tangible, " Why would you do this?’ ‘Why do you think? For the reward. The winner is gifted anything they want from Etta. Anything. We deserve to have our power and our position restored. I can ask Etta, and she can fix it all.’ And this determination, this love Rose has for her sister, shows the depth Rose is willing to go through, all for Kay. Now a Rettling, Rose needs to compete and complete the trials, which are deadly. Many don't make it. Together with her newfound friends, Rose does, but the time between trials is just as deadly, if not more. Zara deadly. Holden deadly. Just two who want her blood. Equally vile, equally abhorrent. But it's the final trial that nearly did me in. As I've mentioned, these authors tie the strands so tight, they put a constrictor knot to shame. They are fully in control of the narrative. And of me...
The pacing is so perfect. When I read a book and suddenly realise I've gotten a hundred pages in, not only is it because of the awesome pacing, but the plot, characters and the exceptional world building, which these authors managed to find the perfect balance. Everything 'fits', the pieces seamlessly sliding together. The world building and plot, the authors built it up superbly so when each piece DID slot in, a lot of the times completely unexpectedly, I sure was shocked! The way they concealed some truths, floored me. And characters? Oh my lordie, some of the best I've seen, intricate, complex, hidden behind a thousand veils and these talented authors made me flip, flop and flap like a fish out of water at the revelations! And the twists, oh heavens, they fell like icicles, piercing me full of holes. My brain shorted from the twists, can you hear the cells popping??? This book was both cognent and cryptic, fastidiously eloquent, piercing. I can't tell you how many times my heart lodged in my throat. How many times my heart was shattered, broken into a thousand pieces.
I find myself oddly lacking in adjectives to describe this magnificent read. Nothing seems adequate enough for the majestic tale that unfolded before me. Where the characters wrenched open my heart as though using a can opener, easily but leaving sharp edges that bled when touched. Like Benny, Jonas, Llinos, Zelle... I thought I had them all figured out; Benny kind, sweet and unflappable but very enigmatic; Jonas, affable, protective of Rose and all in all an awesome hunk; Llinos, completely non judgemental and a true friend; Zelle, fairness personified; Loch, who's so cool, and his quiet presence is so loud! Aside from Kyor and Rose, who completely engulfed me, I have a major soft spot for Benny and Zelle... together, they make up a strangely effective support system, becoming family as the tale progresses. But, guess what??? Yes, the authors soundly wagged their finger at me, all is NOT as it seems....This read is compelling, exciting, riveting, emotional, heartbreaking, outstanding! The progression is seamless, the twists completely unexpected, the spicy bit oh so yummy! I loved how the authors had me questioning motives, like Jonas, I went from liking him, to feeling sorry for him, to being angry at him. I felt every character's vulnerability. That's what I loved about this read, the flawed characters, we all make mistakes and it was portrayed almost effortlessly.
Kyor, the Prince, has a reputation that precedes him, not only does Rose loathe him for his explicit lie, that took everything away from her, he's a lout, a drunk and does whatever he wants, whenever he wants. But that's reputation... he's a character who's so morally grey he's almost charcoal. The authors laid out a compelling case against him but frek did he steal my heart! That's the eloquence of their storytelling, they "allowed" us to see beyond his reputation, to see an honourable man, to see a tortured soul, to see a man desperate for restitution and a man who's got more good in his baby toe than most in their entire being. The tortured soul arc is my favourite kinda guy and he's definitely that. This man had my knickers in a twist, this man has more layers to him than a slice of mille-feuille, each layer decadent, each layer delicious, each layer addictive. His feelings for Rose, again, so complex but the need for her, the want of her, my lordie, hot, steamy and ultra yummy! As her exposes himself more and more to Rise, my heart stuttered, when he told her, 'I didn’t have anywhere else to go,’ and her heart ached anew for him, hells, MY heart ached for Kyor! For both of them.
Rose, oh my word, Rose, I really loved the ease and matter of fact with which Rose allows her carnal pleasures prominence, to grab whatever joy one can. Her mental strength is palpable, her sibling love is off the charts amazing, even to her own detriment, placing herself in harms way time after time. And good golly, did she ever! I loved the growth in her character, when she slowly comes to the realisation that what she thought, what she experienced, is not as clear cut as she was so certain of. Her heart and conviction at odds, so many times. The undeniable draw to Kyor and "seeing the light", exceptionally portrayed. As Zelle said, 'A life lived in hate, is no life at all '. I adored her sense of right, even with everything stacked up against her, she doesn't give in to the 'easy solution', the one where it's simpler to end a life, she's honourable. Life has dealt her lemons but she's made the tastiest lemonade...
The atmosphere of the story is dark but hopeful, the desperation real. It's very easy to get lost in the story and I did. ALL the emotions are in this story, the despair, the anger, the love, the hatred. I feel it all, see it all! Whether it's in the slums where I feel how dejected the people are yet are giving of what little they have, to the nobles and how they live. Excellently description, the authors have given the characters and their surrounds real life, a credible realism that burrows deep. It's such a compelling read I found it hard to put down. Shoo! With each subsequent page, these brilliant authors upped the tension even more! My word, some scenes had my heart alternatively pound and stop, had my mouth drying out. The intrigue is so subtly added, I'm shocked when something hits me in the face, like Caz...my word... Every scene is awesomely vivid, whether it's emotions, thoughts or action. The action was incredibly real too, not only the fighty fights but the action of the heart, the actions of each character. I honestly felt it all, every slash, every wound, whether it was to the body, or the heart, or the psychi, or the soul...
This book is a lot of things. A lot of awesome. A lot of drama. A lot of action. A lot of emotions. A lot of compassion. A lot of evil. And best of all, a whole lot entertaining, immersive, captivating and utterly riveting. Did I experience swoon? Drool? Skipping heartbeat? Gut churning? Heck YES! All of it and then some! I'm still trying to process this book, it hasn't let go of me, the characters haven't let go of me, I find myself transported to this world time and again, it's got it's hooks in me and, guess what, I push the hooks in further and further... the more I read, the more embedded the hooks became. Just as I started to relax, just as I started to collect a sigh and sense of right, these authors shattered me all over again! This is an incredibly intricate tale, with immensely intricate cast of characters, all adding more discernment, multi dimensions and substance to every one of them. I know, I know, I'm rambling, blabbing away but hell, once you read it, you'll get it! This book is like an echo, or a boomerang, I can't get this book, nor Kyor and Rose out of my head! It's like an itch on my brain I can't scratch. I wish I had the skill and prowess to capture exactly how spectaculous this book is! Do I need more? Oh hells YES!!!!
