The Symmetrical Transit

He believed the world was screwed up because a lack of balance. Everything in the world had it's equal parts -- love, hate; right, left; sun, moon; drive, laziness -- but no one ever grew up with these parts in the same proportion, which made them off. People were either forced to live discordant, or they were lucky enough to find that balance through someone else.

wizarding war / forced partnership / adventure / romance / humor / mild smut / eventual HEA

I didn’t try to save you. I was tyring to save myself. You would do well to always remember that about me. I’m not to be a cause, Granger. I’m not an house-elf, or a bloody underdog, or someone you can save. There is no redemption for me.
--Draco

About the story
During a failed mission, Hermione falls into Draco's hands, who reveals himself to be a member of the Order. Together they embark on a quest across Europe to find a horcrux to keep Draco valuable to the Order now that his cover has been blown.

This „lighter“ story is mainly about trust and the search for balance in life with lots of banter and snarkyness

„You make me more nauseous.“
„Good. I hope you puke all over yourself.“ He curled his lip.
„I’ll aim for you.“
„Don’t think I won’t retaliate. I’ve got the more full puke bucket--“ Malfoy must have had a weak stomach by the sounds of it. (…)

My thoughts
Everythursday loves to keep our favorites in small spaces under difficult circumstances for long periods of time.
As with other stories of hers, we follow Hermione and Draco over several months of forced partnership as they first get to know each other better and eventually grow closer.

Both Hermione and Draco are as unmistakably recognizable as only Everythursday manages to write. Both are stubborn and don't budge an inch from their principles, but at the same time they manage to appreciate and love the other for that very stubbornness.

Similar to Parade of the Sun, the romance and intimacy comes late in the story, but it is well balanced in relation to the length of the story (pun intended). Especially well done in this story are Hermione's monologues, which eventually lead to a rethinking.

She took who he used tob e, and made that Malfoy One. And the person he was now, she made him Malfoy Two. And she drew that thick, bold line down the middle, because she liked lines, and sections, and order. She figured the only way to really know if a person is redeemable is to see who they were, as opposed to constantly looking at him and remembering who he was.

It was called a chance. And she gave it to him.

The sexual tension is felt much earlier here and rises steadily, the finale when Hermione and Draco sleep together for the first time is so well written. It might be one of my favorite sex scenes in fanfiction.

Draco, as usual in Everythursday stories, is arrogant but competent, confident and sexy and even though he can be an ass: Always respectful of Hermione when it comes to intimacy.

The ending is surprising in a way. Some might be a little annoyed, I too am not a fan of the characters making certain choices to initiate this ending. Nonetheless, Hermione and Draco experience an eventual HEA.

This story is for those who want to read a short and amusing story of forced partnership, adventure and a touch of romance and smut.

Maybe my least favourite of the characterisations, but it was still a total delight.

3.5 i guess
Idk some pages were downright atrocious. The whole big bad guy Draco thing especially but i guess he was trying to give her a hint by that so it's okay? Also i was honestly so scared because only 10 pages were left and they were coming back to England and i had no idea what's up and then the revelation fucked me up almost as much as hermione but i liked the confession at the end, very cute. Reminded me of kevin telling sophie he lost his limb when she left which idk is kinda romantic.
So yeah I LOVE everythursday and will read literally everything they would ever put out into the world but this along with A Fruitless Year might be my least favourite one of her works (A Fruitless Year is kinda different tho, it's a completely different environment to set the story in and idk if I'm that interested in a marriage story but it's still sad, but yeah not that much love for it in my heart). And i was kinda disappointed because someone on tumblr said that although everyone likes The Fallout and it's the most famous one, this one is their favourite. But sad to say, not the case for me. The Fallout has a very special place in my heart, not only because i read it first but just how vast and deep and expressive it is, like you feel them being in the war and even after it is over and they can be properly together you have this feeling that they have lost parts of themselves they'll never get back, like they won the war but the cost was fucking enormous but it was a sacrifice they had to make and it breaks you. It's so beautifully written. I also ADORE Elephant Walk for its writing. I had really high hopes after reading the abstract about balance but didn't really get the everythursday brilliance in prose here. Like i could see it in the dialogues but not so much in the prose and the clichés were also just kinda cringey here. So yeah. Okay cool.

Now that that is out of the way, just wanna declare that everythursday's Draco Malfoy makes me feel emotions that I have never felt for literally anyone like it's just too much. I can't even sit still. It's like I drank a dozen cups of coffee in an hour and my insides are floating, hell i am just floating above the ground but there's this buzz all over me. Everything that he does or says has the most disproportionate effect on me. Even if it's anger at some of the things he does but mostly just fucking enormous gravitational pull. Like why is draco wearing mismatched socks or washing dishes making me flustered as fuck literally.
Okay i think that's enough embarrassing sentences written by me today.

3 stars - this one was alright but I didn’t love how she wrote H and D in this one. They just didn’t feel as true to character as her other works and the angst wasn’t it.

The UST was killer, and the bantering and little arguments between Draco and Hermione were so spot-on and adorable. This fic sucked me in. I love how the "relationship" progressed, quite realistically for such opposing characters. Brilliant plot and writing.
