This is the book that fans of Wanda Brunstetter have been waiting for. What happened to Rosa Petersheim? If you have read the other two books in this series you will know that she disappeared without a trace. Her family has waited for two long years with no word from Rosa. The answers are here in this book. With that I will say no more except you won’t want to miss reading The Pretender.
This is a book that is hard to put down once you’ve started reading it. I was drawn into the story all the way through the book to the epilogue. It was entertaining, Inspirational, and a page turner. The story focuses uon how harmful lies can be and how one lie will lead to another lie. The characters are well drawn and fit the story well.
I highly recommend The Pretender to readers of Christian Fiction and Amish Fiction. I would recommend reading book one and book two before reading this book. The mystery is carried from the previous books to this one. This book is scheduled for release on 8/1/25.
I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are solely my own.

The Pretender opens with the long-awaited return of a soul both lost and longing for home. Rosa Petersheim’s journey, away and back, is about the deep, aching question we all ask at some point: Will I still be loved, even after everything?

Wanda E. Brunstetter answers that aching question with Gospel truth wrapped in the humble fabric of everyday life. The love and forgiveness poured into these pages are raw and slow. They cost something. Because when grace shows up wearing scars, we recognize it for what it truly is: a gift from God.

“If our Lord could forgive those who had put Him to death, why do we find it so difficult to forgive others?” That question hovers over Rosa’s family, and it settles into the heart of anyone who’s ever wrestled with wounds or withheld grace. The hurt she caused is real. So is the mercy offered … and it flows like healing balm from our Heavenly Father’s hands. Most of us have stood on both sides of that question … needing forgiveness, and needing to forgive.

“…you need to forgive yourself, just as God forgave you as soon as you repented.” Wanda lets Rosa’s redemption unfold slowly, the way true healing often does.

“God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform.” This story finishes with the kind of ending that feels both unexpected and exactly right … because it reflects what real life often looks like: imperfect people, radically loved by a perfect God.

A comforting read that finishes strong with life applications of God’s precious, powerful Word!
Perfect for readers who love Amish fiction, heartfelt redemption, and stories that point clearly to Jesus.

Well, this series has come to a wrap. It was more of a sweet ending as opposed to a dark and sinister one, which made the series feel more like a cozy mystery than a suspenseful one. But that is on brand for Brunstetter. This book didn’t really have much mystery left in it. It was like that part ended with book 2, but I am still glad I read this one because otherwise I would’ve really wondered about Rosa and what happened to her. I’m also curious if there is more to be said about the Petersheim family, maybe in another book or another series.

Now, about this book. Rosa suddenly goes home, and we learn what she’s been doing for the last two and a half years. Oh, and by the way, if you haven’t read the first two books, I highly recommend them. While this book is a three star, I rated the other two much higher, so overall the series has been really good. Rosa is afraid to go home because she’s pregnant and not married, and her dad is a pretty strict guy and the bishop, so you know, tough crowd. She confides in Anthony, the cook at the restaurant where she works. She doesn’t know him very well, and he doesn’t know her either, but he decides to go home with her and pretend to be her husband, hence the name of the book The Pretender. The story goes on from there. Later in the book, it does wrap up a few things from the first two books, so a little bit of the mystery is still there. I guess I was just hoping for something darker. But it’s Wanda Brunstetter, she’s the queen of sweet, and I should know that. Still, I felt like the first two books set this up to go in a different direction. Even so, this was a sweet and well-done story, and I’m hoping the Petersheim family shows up again later.

If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, or if you simply want a feel-good Amish fiction read, I recommend this book. But only after you’ve read books one and two, wink wink.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

The Pretender by Wanda E Brunstetter is the 3rd book in her Mifflin County Mystery series. I did read the first 2 books and couldn’t wait to read about what happened to Rosa Perersheim. In the first series she disappeared and no one knew if she was dead or alive. Rosa returns 2yrs later, pregnant and with her pretend husband Anthony Reeves who she works with. This book is full of Faith, Family, Friends, Hope and Redemption. Snuggles up and enjoy! Thank you to #NetGalley and #Barbour Publishing for this Arc. This is my honest review!

I was excited to see how this story would play out and it did not disappoint. The mystery of what happened to Rosa when she disappeared is revealed. Not what I expected, but it still made the story delightful. Easy to follow storyline. This can be read as a stand alone, but I am glad I read the other two books in the series-The Protector and The Peacemaker so I was familiar with the characters. Wanda Brunstetter is an exceptional writer and I always look forward to her books.

Book Review: The Pretender by Wanda E. Brunstetter

Rating: ★★★★ (4/5)

Wanda E. Brunstetter’s The Pretender delivers a poignant exploration of forgiveness, cultural identity, and the complexities of homecoming in the third installment of the Mifflin County Mystery series. The novel’s central premise—a prodigal daughter’s return to her Amish community with a non-Amish husband—immediately captivates, offering a fresh twist on the traditional “returning home” narrative.

Emotional Resonance & Thematic Depth
Brunstetter excels at crafting emotionally charged dilemmas that resonate beyond the Amish setting. Rosa’s internal conflict—her shame over past choices warring with her hope for reconciliation—felt viscerally real. As someone who has witnessed familial rifts, I found myself deeply moved by scenes where Rosa’s father struggles to reconcile his faith’s call for forgiveness with very human disappointment. The author’s nuanced portrayal of Anthony, the outsider husband, adds rich layers to the story. His attempts to navigate Amish customs while respecting Rosa’s trauma sparked reflections on how love bridges cultural divides—a theme with universal relevance.

The novel’s greatest strength lies in its refusal to simplify reconciliation. Unlike many faith-based narratives that rush to resolution, Brunstetter allows tensions to simmer authentically. A particularly powerful moment involves Rosa’s sister silently setting an extra place at the dinner table—a gesture that spoke volumes about unspoken grief and tentative hope.

Constructive Criticism
While the emotional beats land effectively, the mystery elements promised by the series title feel underdeveloped. Readers expecting a traditional whodunit may be disappointed by the focus on relational drama over suspense. Additionally, some secondary characters (particularly Rosa’s siblings) lack distinct voices, missing opportunities to deepen the exploration of communal forgiveness.

The pacing occasionally suffers from repetitive introspection. A tighter edit could maintain the novel’s contemplative tone while sharpening its narrative drive—especially in middle chapters where Rosa’s self-reproach becomes cyclical.

Summary Takeaways:
-When coming home requires more courage than leaving.
- A masterclass in writing grace without glossing over grief.
- For fans of The Confession by Beverly Lewis—but with grittier emotional honesty.
- Proof that the hardest forgiveness to earn is often our own.

Personal Reflection
Reading The Pretender coincided with my own family’s reconciliation after an estrangement, making Rosa’s journey painfully relatable. Brunstetter’s depiction of awkward silences and halting gestures of reconciliation mirrored my experiences uncannily. The novel’s insistence that healing isn’t linear—that trust must be rebuilt plate by plate at the dinner table—offered unexpected comfort.

Final Assessment
This earns its 4-star rating through emotionally authentic storytelling and thoughtful cultural insights, despite minor pacing issues. Brunstetter proves once again why she remains a cornerstone of Amish fiction.

Acknowledgments
Thank you to the publisher and Goodreads Giveaways for the review copy. As both a longtime Brunstetter reader and someone navigating familial reconciliation, this story arrived at the perfect moment.

Recommended For
-Readers of faith-based fiction seeking nuanced conflict
-Book clubs discussing forgiveness dynamics
-Fans of The Protector and The Peacemaker (prior series installments)
-Anyone who believes homecomings reveal more about communities than individuals

This is probably one of the best books the author has written. Deceit has a way of being revealed and in this case it causes an avalanche of hurt. I really liked how the author illustrates how a lie can have lasting effects on people. We think that if we hide something it will not be found out. Rosa has been estranged from her family for awhile. Being in New York working as a waitress is so different from how she was raised. No one knows that she is Amish but soon that secret will be found out. What will her family’s reaction be when she reappears on her family’s doorstep after two years?

Anthony is a gifted chef who works at his father’s restaurant. He is happy and content until Rosa springs something on him. He is willing to help Rosa when she asks first help. His life is turned upside down when he travels with her back to her family’s home. What a shock it is to find out Rosa is Amish. Thinking that he is helping Rosa he agrees to pretend they are married. Oh my will this backfire on them.

There is another character in the story that really stood out to me. Rosa’s sister Susan is jealous of her and is not happy when she comes back home. Susan is bitter and has a way of spreading lies. I did feel bad for Susan because she is very insecure. We can find ourselves being bitter when we are unhappy with our own lives. Can Susan find a way to repent and find unconditional love?

What is evident in the story is the importance of listening to God. We all sin, but need to ask for forgiveness. I love how Anthony starts to want a relationship with God. Nothing happens by accident and when he finds something special in his baggage, his heart is softened. Beautiful message of letting go of the past shows how God can restore joy. I loved how the author uses scriptures in the story and weaves a touching story of redemption, restoring and rejoicing.

“God’s truth will always win out.”

The Pretender by Wanda Brunstetter the final installment of the Mifflin County Mystery was truly a satisfying end to this three-book series.

Welcome home Rosa! I have to say The Pretender was my favorite book of the series. I love all the great characters, (even the grumpy ones grew on me), such a great wrap up to the mystery of where and why Rosa was gone.

I would recommend the entire series; however, a person could read book three as a stand-alone and not feel like you were missing out.

I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Another amazing book in this series by a wonderful author. The whole story came together so well in this book. I would certainly give this series more than five stars if I could. I just love reading about the Amish life and reading a series like this feels like coming back to family. I read so many books between the time that a new one comes out in a series but I am able to pick right up on the storyline.

This was my favorite book in the series! I love that Rosa is now home and we know what she went through. The addition of Anthony to the story enriched the plotline so much. He was such a likeable character. I found Susan to be irritating after a while. I continue to love that the author ends the story with a recipe from the story.

Rosa Petersheim disappeared from her parents home two years ago and her family has worried and prayed for her. They do not know if she left of her own accord, or if she was taken. They don't know if she is still alive...or not. Suddenly, she appears at her parents home, on her birthday. With a husband. Neither are Amish.
Her mother is ecstatic to see Rosa. Her father is the bishop and isn't welcoming. A younger sister, Susan, not so much. She, now has to give up Rosa's room and go back to sharing a room with another sister.
Rosa had left of her own accord. She felt she didn't want to be Amish. Her travels eventually led her to working as a waitress in a restaurant. She was having an affair with a married man who dumped her once she revealed to him that she was pregnant. Anthony, the son of the restaurant owner, found Rosa crying. Rosa explained her dilemma and said she had no where to go but back home to her parents. She felt they may not accept her back being unmarried and pregnant. A plan is devised. Anthony will drive her back, pretend to be her husband, and then they will split up and he'll return home. Surely, then her parents would accept her and her child.
Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans.
Rosa's father is upset that she just left without a word and allowed them to worry about her. She explained that she had left them a not, and had called several times leaving messages on the answering machine. She had, also mailed letters and postcards. He does not believe her as she had lied so much in the past. What happened to her note, voicemails, letters and postcards? Rosa cannot imagine.
Rosa now realizes she should have never left her home. She seems to value their way of life so much more now. But, will she be allowed to stay? And, what of these feelings she's beginning to develop for Anthony?
I enjoyed this story. Great characters.
I was given an advanced ecopy by the publisher, Barbour Fiction, through Netgalley. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

The third and final book in the Mifflin County Mystery series is "The Pretender." This book brings the story together from the other two books - "The Protector" and "The Peacemaker." It would be best to read the books in order. This book highlights faith, friendship and the importance of consequences, confession , forgiveness, love and compassion.

Did Rosa Petersheim leave on her own or was she taken? After two years, Rosa's Mom is happy she has returned but not her Father and sister, Susan. We wonder why her sister is not happy. Rosa returns to the Big Valley pregnant and married. Her friend from work where she was employed comes to her rescue and comes to the Big Valley. Anthony is liking Amish life. What does he do when he comes down with chicken pox and then car problems? His two week vacation turns into more time in the Big Valley. As time passes, they both are starting to fall for each other. They have fabricated a story to tell everyone when he leaves. Does he just leave or does the truth come out? Does the truth come out as to what happened to her note she left, her phone calls and her mail? What has Susan done since Rosa left?

This book grabs your attention and you can't put it down. This book brings together questions that have you wondering if Rosa will return. Another great series by Wanda E. Brunstetter.

5 stars, Amazing Conclusion

THE PRETENDER (A MIFFLIN COUNTY MYSTERY BOOK 3)
by Wanda E. Brunstetter

Rosa Petersheim had disappeared two years ago, after a singing and youth get together in her community in Big Valley. Her friends and family have worried about what might have happened to her. She suddenly appears in their neighborhood.

Rosa has changed her name and her appearance greatly turning from her Amish roots. Now, she must humble herself and beg her family to accept her back into her familial fold. She brings with her an Englisher husband and her unborn baby.

Rosa's father isn't welcoming her, Rosa's disappearance caused her mother to have many health setbacks.

Rosa's younger sister has some secrets of her own.

I didn't care for the younger sister's antics. I suppose there is always someone like that in a lot of families, no matter if you are Englisher or Amish.

I did like the conclusion to the book, it was worth waiting for to see how the series concluded. Highly recommend.

The third book in the Mifflin County Mysteries deals with the return of the missing Rosa Petersheim. Pregnant and alone, with a waitressing job in New York City, Rosa and a coworker agree to pose as husband and wife and travel to her home in Big Valley to reunite with her family. Anthony Reeves agreed to the deception to help Rosa, but this NYC chef is surprised to find he is enjoying his stay with the pretty young woman and her Amish family. When the time comes to stage a breakup and separate, will this young couple realize they were truly meant to be together?

Whenever I need a pick-me-up, a Wanda E. Brunstetter book always does the job. It transports me to a simpler life, where problems do exist, but they are dealt with love, compassion, and forgiveness. There are struggles in marriages and with children, but with the love of family, obstacles are overcome. The return of Rosa brings up complex emotions from family and friends and even more jealousy from her sister Susan. From church outings, buggy rides, Amish celebrations, the turn of the seasons, and a new baby, THE PRETENDER is an enjoyable and uplifting escape.

I highly recommend reading books 1 and 2 in this series first. This follows the same mystery and involves all of the same people. I think you’d be lost if you start with this book.

In The Pretender Rosa’s mystery continues. Until she reappears with a few answers. Rosa was definitely a character that needed help. You can’t help but like her, yet want to shake her. It took me a while to figure out Anthony. Why in the world did he do what he did? You’ll have to read to find out.

The Pretender is just that. There’s a lot of pretense going on. Lies, deceit, a desire for forgiveness. Can this ever be worked out? It’s a pretty tangled mess for Rosa and Anthony.

One issue I did have with the story is that there is a lot of repetition. Editing that out would have made things easier to understand and then it wouldn’t be dragged out. But if you enjoy a cozy mystery with Amish and English characters, give it a read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review. All thoughts are my own.

As always I have to say Mrs Wanda never disappointes.

I was glad Rosa came home and nothing seriously bad happened to her. A story of Faith and Hope. A plot of twists and mystery surrounded the Petersheim. And all because of a jealous sister

Mrs Wanda transforms a mystery with Inspirational faith in it. And delivers a cozy sweet story. The third book in the series. And I enjoyed it. Although I thought something really bad had happened to Rosa because of the other two books in the series. It was a sweet ending with this third book.

Rosa goes missing, no word, no signs. But someone close to her holds the key and answers. And a sweet guy shows up to help clear the path for Rosa. With at the same time, clearing his own path to his future.

Mystery, family, jealousy, faith and love come together to bring a closure of happiness to so many hearts. Thank you Mrs Wanda for such a great series. Would love to read about Susan sometime.

I received a ARC from the author publisher. I was not required to leave a positive comment. All stated here are my own.

I have loved the first two books from A Mifflin County Mystery series from Wanda E Brunstetter. I was excited to have the opportunity to read the third installment, The Pretender. I do want to caution the reader that since this is a series, it would be a better experience if the books are read in order. I wanted to keep reading to find out more about Rosa and get the answers I had been wondering about her all throughout the series. I thought this was a definitely a book worth reading.

I am going to give The Pretender five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love Amish fiction with a little mystery to dive into As always, I will be looking forward to more upcoming releases from Wanda E Brunstetter in the future.

This is Book 3 of A Mifflin County Mystery
Mystery solved, or not? If you have read the first two books of this series, you will certainly enjoy this book. Now we learn if she had been kidnapped, obviously not killed however everyone was afraid that was what had happened to her, or if she just walked away from the Amish lifestyle to live as an Englisher. Rosa, who has been missing for two years returns home. She returns home pregnant and with a husband, although they are not married but he came with her to assume the role of husband to help her family accept her better.
This is a great read touching on love, forgiveness, and so many other emotions as we read and see what takes place within the family, Rosa and her pretend husband, Anthony.
You will not want to put the book down until you have finished it.

I thoroughly enjoyed book three in the Mifflin County mystery.

Rosa had disappeared mysteriously two years earlier. No one knew what had happened to her. There have been many questions over the years. Was Rosa alive? Where was she? Was she safe? Why would Rosa make the decision to return home to her family? How will her family react to her appearance? Will they all be happy that she has returned? What secrets does Rosa bring with her? Will Rosa’s plan succeed? Will she remain Amish and join the church?

We finally have answers and they will surprise you. I highly recommend reading the twists and turns as Rosa and her family work to reunite after 2 years of separation.

Wanda E. Brunstetter has a special place in my heart after meeting her a few years ago. I have been reading her books for quite a few years. And this new story wraps up the three book set. This new book is Book 3 of the Middlin County Mystery.
Rosa has found herself in a mess. And Anthony says he'll help her out and takes a couple of weeks off at his parents' restaurant. Two weeks landed up being a few weeks more as Anthony found himself sick or injured.

Forgiveness is one of the main themes. Can Rosa forgive others as well as herself? Will her sister admit her own mistakes and ask for forgiveness? Can Anthony's father and Rosa's father relax and forgive?

The Great Pretender is being not really who you are. Rosa, Susan and Anthony were not the people they appeared to be. You had to look beyond their acts.

I enjoyed this story. Another hit!

This is an amazing book! It's the last in a series called A Mifflin County Mystery. I would recommend reading The Protector and The Peacemaker first because they are essential to the plot and storyline.

The characters are relatable and I found myself deeply invested in their lives. Rosa has been missing for over 2 years. Her mother has never given up hope that she'll come home. Rosa's life since leaving has been one of disappointment. Anthony is 😍! He's compassionate, considerate, kind, and helpful. In this book, Susan finally realized that her lies and deceit are harmful.

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Anthony finds a Bible in his bag. Several verses are underlined and Anthony realizes his need for a Savior!

I won this book from Goodreads! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was a good read. Best read in order, this third book in the Mifflin County Mystery series brought answers to the mystery of Rosa's disappearance. Rosa finds herself in a difficult situation and chooses to return home in hopes that her family will welcome her. Faced with the consequences of her actions, she chooses to keep secrets while being helped by her friend Anthony. As the story progresses and more secrets are revealed, Rosa and Anthony find themselves making relationship decisions they had not expected. The story ends in a satisfying conclusion that highlights faith, friendship that becomes more, and the importance of choices and consequences. The mysterious disappearance of Rosa Petersheim is solved when she returns to her Amish community pregnant and with an English husband. Are looks all they appear to be though? Rosa finds that decisions do have consequences. Those around her want answers that she cannot give or is not ready to give. Anthony sees a young woman in trouble. Looking for a change, Anthony tries to help Rosa. Will they find a happily ever after? Will Rosa win back the trust and forgiveness she lost and wants. This was the perfect ending to the series. The Pretender is the third book and the conclusion of the Mifflin County Mystery series. To truly understand the back story, you really need to read the first two, which are The Protector and The Peacemaker.I thoroughly enjoyed The Pretender. We finally learned where Rosa was the previous 2 years. I love the thread of forgiveness that runs throughout the book. Anthony came home with Rosa. Both of them share some if the same family issues and I live how they bonded over that to become closer. It was a rewarding and very good end to the series.

I really enjoyed this author's book. An Amish woman whose family hasn't heard from in 2 years, suddenly appears home with an Englisher whom she introduces as her husband. How will her family react to her sudden appearance? Rosa is worried as to whether her family will accept or reject her. She is expecting a baby. Her sister is feeling and acting somewhat unkindly to Rosa and her "husband", Anthony. It is a good story line and I enjoyed the book very much.

The Pretender is such a good conclusion to the Mifflin County Mystery series! Rosa Petersheim returns home after 2 years with a husband in tow and a baby on the way. Some of her family is overjoyed that their long lost family member has returned home and some are wary and suspicious that things are not quite as they seem. Many secrets are revealed, while more secrets are kept. If Rosa comes clean to her family about all the secrets she's kept and lies she told, will she find herself estranged from her family for good?

The pretender

A great story of new beginnings and forgiveness and family.
Rosa comes back home after being gone two years with a surprise for her family. Will her family welcome her back? She brings Anthony home as her husband. What will her family think of him? I loved Anthony’s character and what he did for a living.
This is the 3rd and final book in the series. I do recommend reading the first two. A really good series.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. This book review is my own opinion.
