What Hurts the Most: A Slow Burn, Contemporary Romance Novel

Rate this book
Dating her childhood crush should have been Cori’s happily ever after, but eight months later, she’s still trapped within her insecurities. She’s broke with a car that hates her, her job interviews go horribly, and the idea of failing is as scary as small talk. It isn’t until an awkward encounter with her boyfriend's roommate that a spark inside her reignites.

Nick is determined to finally move on from the football injury that broke his heart. But as he reconnects with friends, he realizes just how far behind he is, and thinking of his future only brings back the pain he tried so hard to overcome. Locked in similar figurative cages, Cori and Nick make a deal to keep each other accountable while they work towards their goals.

Nick’s pointed looks and sly grins have Cori questioning the safety she’d found in settling for her circumstances. But just as she finds the courage to voice her desires, chaos ensues sending her back to the start line. And Nick, conflicted between his feelings for Cori and his friendship with Sam, doesn’t know how to fight for someone who sees no point in fighting for herself.

**In this novel, you will find journeys of personal growth regarding confidence and self-worth, the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people, and a slow-burn romance. The characters in this novel struggle with anxiety, and depression. There is cussing, sexual content, talk of funerals, some dark humor regarding death, emotional abuse, body shaming, dysfunctional family dynamics, and the main character is cheated on. This is a love triangle, but the right choice is clear.

ARC Review for “What Hurts the Most”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book…. I almost don’t have words, but I also almost have too many words. I read a lot of books and that is not to brag, just to set you up for this review. I have NEVER related to a FMC so much in all the reading I have done. Now, I am not saying I need to relate to a character to enjoy a book, that is not it at all. I am just saying, this book made me feel like it was me within the pages.
From the very first chapter to the very end of the book, I was fully invested. I read this in a day because I just needed to know what happened. Cori is a woman in her early 20s that is the black sheep of her family and struggles with her weight (mostly because of said family). She has an idea of what she wants to do in her life but her unsupportive family always disregarding or putting her down for her aspirations. She ends up in relationship that is unhealthy that she was basically groomed for her whole childhood. As soon as Sam was introduced, I did not like the guy, and I spent the whole book wanting to tell him to kick rocks. In enters Nick, who is Sam’s friend and roommate and let’s be real, a real day saint. He starts to get Cori to see her worth and supports her when she needs it the most.
I think there are so many females that can relate to this type of situation. I cannot wait for the rest of the series!
Tropes within:

• Dysfunctional Family
• Happily Ever After
• Finding Self Worth
• Boyfriend’s Roommate/Friend

I am so thankful to Amanda for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I have not felt so deeply while reading a book in a very long time.

OK, let me start by saying this is one of those books that you really need to listen to what the book is about. When I finished, I wasn’t sure that I liked it. I had to unpack it for a couple of days before I wrote a review. What I found is that it’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just one of those books where it touched me emotionally in a place I didn’t think I needed or was ready to go.

The beginning was a bit packed and I would recommend that you spread out the introduction of the characters or put more information so we can connect the dots.

I’m not going to give any spoilers on the book at all. I will tell you that Cori is a lot like people we know and although our struggles may not be the same, we all have struggles. I wanted to yell at her and tell her to snap out of it, ask what she was thinking, and why she wasn’t doing what needs to be done. Yet I understood how difficult it is to come from a place deep inside and realize you have to fight for yourself. No one can do that for you. I understood how Hailey felt and how she was also impacted. I really loved the side characters as they helped to develop the overall story.

It was the book I didn’t know I needed to read. It gave me a perspective I thought I had but desperately needed a reminder. For a debut author…Well Done!

ARC Review for “What Hurts the Most” by Amanda Courtney

Thank you to Amanda for the opportunity and providing me with an ARC. I also want to add that I cannot believe this is your Debut Novel!!! I loved the book from the first page to the very last page, I did not want to stop reading it and I cannot wait to see what you come out with next.

First and foremost, I hate Sam lol! Sam is such a narcissist, so used to getting his way I wanted to punch him in the face since chapter one! Cori is such a sweet woman and so relatable in how she always put herself last and put everyone else and their needs and opinions first. The book felt like I was apart of it and with Cori every step of the way, I felt like I was talking to her the entire time, like GIRL what are you doing!!!! I remember one part where she told him off and I yelled "yessssss, I am so proud of you, but then of course she went right back into his web of manipulation, in which I yelled "nooooooooo".

I actually have a friend who is going through this and people really do not stop until they are ready to stop. It does not matter what you tell the person going through this, they will continue until they are the ones who are 100% done and that is truly what I thoroughly loved and enjoyed about this book that it showed the raw and ugly truth that comes with being with a person like that and how they begin to make excuses for them.

I continue to recommend this book and I cannot wait to see what Amanda comes out with next! I am so happy for you, you are doing amazing!

I received an ARC copy of this novel, thank you so much Amanda. No spoilers.

It was a fantastic debut novel, I couldn’t wait to pick it up at every spare moment.
I loved how the characters were portrayed, I think there’s a bit of Cori in all of us if we are honest.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

TW: anx!ety, seIf harm(scratching), man!pulation, gasl!ghting, cheating(not between MCs…), emotional ab*se, body sham!ng, dubious consent, peer pressure

This book hooked me pretty fast. I did not read the synopsis(as I almost never do) so I was a little confused at first but it was my own fault. I did read the TW and tropes so I shouldn’t have been surprised. Anyway. I did like it pretty quickly. It was nice to see a book represent what anxiety truly is and not something that just disappears when a character becomes “happy”. Cori has bad anxiety and literally not a single person in her life seems to understand it??? Everyone tells her at one point in this book to just be confident like that will solve all her anxiety? It kinda made me want to scream (but mostly because that is truly how people act). I liked though that Nick learned. He realized why his comments about it didn’t help and actually hurt and worked to fix his perception of anxiety and even recognized his own anxiety in moments. It was nice to see.
Also shout to the best friends in this book. True MVPs.

I did get some second hand anxiety from reading this because the descriptions of it were detailed and honestly a little too accurate. The spirals are real and the self sabotage from them is also very real.
It’s like 1 am so this might not make any sense rn.
But I liked the characters and I liked how the issues were handled but I do have a taste for more bitter revenge and this did not deliver unfortunately.
She’s a coffee lover and he hates it.

ARC Review: What Hurts the Most by Amanda Courtney

Let me tell you something—this book was literally spewing so many feels and in the best possible ways.

From the first chapter to the very end , What Hurts the Most had me in a chokehold. Amanda Courtney set the bar high for me with this one—in an instant, she gripped my heart, gave it few gentle squeezes, between my addiction for coffee and how my soul aches for my anchor in heaven—then to gripping my moral compass and wanting to physically lash out at fictional characters. The rawness, the realness, the emotional whiplash? I felt it all. I laughed. I cried. I shouted (internally and out loud). And at several points, I was dangerously close to reaching through my Kindle screen. (You’ll know exactly who I mean when you read it.)

What struck me most was how deeply personal it felt. As someone who’s lived through similar pain, the way Amanda captures grief, healing, and messy, complicated love was both refreshing and beautifully honest. This isn’t just a story—it’s an experience.

And that ending? I’m not okay, and I loved it.

Add this to your TBR. Preorder it. Set an alarm. Whatever it takes—just don’t miss this one.

“The ability to let things go can be a good quality until someone takes advantage of it, or until you sacrifice your mental health.”

I read this as an ARC for this lovely debut author and I’m so glad I was chosen because I devoured this book. I was hooked immediately as the writing is very easy flowing in the best of ways. I found myself antsy to get back to my kindle so I could keep reading!

This story is about Cori, the MFC, who is in a relationship with her childhood friend, Sam. They seemed perfect together growing up, but Sam has an EGO as his adult self. Everyone in Cori’s life seems to be thriving and always has some sort of news to share whereas she seems to just be treading water while trying to figure out her next step in life. Every time she thinks she’s got it right, the rug is pulled out from under her again and she’s back to square one, all while receiving criticism from everyone around her. Her best friend, Hailey and now Nick 👀 are the only people in her life who encourage her to follow her dreams and stick up for herself, hoping one day she will see she is more than what everyone says she is.
Nick, the MMC, is Sams college friend and new roommate. After a sports injury that changed his whole life, he’s back trying to figure out what he wants to do now.

Nick and Cori realize they’re a lot more alike in ways that only they seem to be able to relate to and slowly, a friendship builds between the two. Together, they hold each other accountable and encourage one another to keep persevering till they both find where they belong in the world of “success” and just being enough.

Cori is relatable in so many ways and I loved reading this and seeing her find her voice through everything.
Definitely look forward to more stories by Amanda Courtney!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not gonna lie, it felt a little jumbled at the beginning but I understand why. The foundation needed to be laid out. After the first few chapters the relatable characters and story lines suck you right in and you cannot wait to find out what happens. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions to say the least

✨ARC REVIEW✨

What Hurts the Most by Amanda Courtney is an incredible debut that hit me hard in the best way. I have never related to a FMC like this before. Cori’s story felt so personal, from the toxic family dynamics and body shaming to the heartbreaking self-doubt with her writing, I saw so much of myself in her. Identity theft is not a joke, Jim!

Watching Cori slowly come into her own, especially with Nick by her side, was such a powerful experience. Nick (Cori’s boyfriend’s former teammate turned roommate) is the definition of the supportive, patient, golden retriever MMC. The way he believed in her, even when she couldn’t believe in herself? Swoooon. Their accountability pact? Adorable. Their beach race? Made me smile. That one line? “Let’s get two things straight…” OKAY, SIR. 😍

I loved that the romance didn’t overshadow the emotional healing, this book is about choosing yourself first. And don’t even get me started on Sam. The way I said “ugh” every time he was on page?? A record. I did not like that man 😅

This debut tackles mental health, self-worth, and finding strength after heartbreak with so much honesty and heart. It gave me all the feels and left me rooting hard for Cori and Nick.

And seriously, I cannot wait to read more about Sage, Brian, Hailey, Tyler, and Callum. I’m fully invested in this entire friend group and their messy, real, and beautiful lives.

5/5 ⭐️ Absolutely could not put this book down! Releases April 25th, you don’t want to miss out on this one!

What Hurts the Most by Amanda Courtney is a Contemporary Romance and also her debut book. Let me start off by saying what a way to start. Wow. This book is just amazing. There is anxiety & depression representation, the way she describes the spiraling thoughts is so on point. As someone who suffers from both on a daily basis, to be able to relate to the characters in this book is truly inspiring and honestly I felt seen. There are trigger warnings so of course peep those before you dive in, make sure you are taking care of yourself first and foremost.

The book starts with our FMC Cori who is always riddled with anxiety and quietly suffering with depression. She struggles with confidence and her family only contributes to that lack of confidence instead of supporting her in all things in life. She starts a relationship with her childhood best friend Sam and he is just a shit guy and even worse boyfriend. There’s literally no other way to describe him other than he’s a narcissist. She’s at a crossroads in her life not really knowing what to do or where to go so she’s just working at her family diner trying to make ends meet.

Then enters our MMC Nick, a friend of Sam’s from playing college football together and now his new roommate. He was destined to go to the NFL but after a career ending injury he left college without a word, then pops back in 2 years later and picks up where his friendships left off. He quickly becomes friends with Cori and right away sees how horrible Sam treats her. The closer this friendship becomes the more challenging it is for Nick to keep himself from wanting to be around her all the time and help her realize she’s more than she believes.

This is on my top reads of the year so far, I love it so much. I have never related to a character in a book like I have with Cori in this one. It’s so beautiful reading about both Cori and Nicks confidence slowly building for different reason of course but also how the start of a friendship that’s leads them to so much self discovery. Being able to set boundaries, believing in themselves, making and working to meet life goals is so important so to watch them support each other while doing that is amazing. The slow burn is worth the wait, every Cori needs a Nick out there. I loved all of the side characters and cannot wait to read their stories in the future.

What Hurts The Most ARC Review 🫶🏼
What Hurts The Most will be releasing on 25 April 2025 📚❤️ this was definitely my favorite read of 2025 🫶🏼

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What Hurts The Most is Amanda Courtney's debut novel and i cannot begin to explain how grateful i am to have been able to ARC read this - as well as being a part of her street team! she is an impeccable writer 😍

miss Amanda had me in tears in the first chapter!
Lorraine was my grandma's name as well and i lost her in June of 2023. reading about Cori and grandmother's relationship made me think of my grandma and seeing how Cori felt made me relate so so much, because i pretty much felt the same.

Cori is the FMC of WHTM and what a FMC she is! i relate more to her than i ever thought i'd relate to a character.

Cori's relationship with Sam had me absolutely seething in anger and i don't think i've ever disliked a MC as much as i disliked Sam. and don't get me started on her mother 🥲 the gaslighting, manipulation etc, but as we all know well a scorned woman hits back 10x harder.

i loved how Cori started standing up for herself and that she had Nick and Hailey supporting her through it all.

Nick Porter - the man that you are. the support he showed her when Sam disappointed her (yet again), and how he waited for her until she was ready 😭 i'm inlove!!!

Tropes:
✨ Slow Burn
✨ Strangers to Lovers to Friends
✨ Dysfunctional Family
✨ Boyfriends Roommate / Friend
✨ Forced Proximity
✨ Finding Self-Worth
✨ HEA

an absolute FAVORITE quote:
"I sometimes wonder where I fit in. Then I see Cori and I know exactly where." ❤️

I related to Cori so much with her anxiety and how she feels about herself. It took me a long time to realize my self worth and I’m so glad we get to see Cori’s journey. This was a great representation of what being an introvert who struggles with their identity is really like.

Now for the other characters; Sam was so easy to hate. The way he treats other people is appalling but I’m sure we all know someone just like him. Nick is a great representation of who every person deserves to have love them. The way he supported Cori was amazing and The rest of the friend group were great and I can’t wait to see more of them especially Tyler, Hailey, Callum, Sage, and Erin. Cori’s parents pissed me off pretty much every time they were brought up. I also really related to that which is probably why they made me so angry. Having parents who are really supportive of your siblings but then try to make decisions for you, tell you the decisions you make suck, and just downright treat you like a child who doesn’t know anything is rough and will drive anyone crazy. I literally was singing People Pleaser Anthem when Cori finally stood up for herself.

There is so much more I can say as this is def one of my top reads for the year but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. I cannot wait for book 2!

“I could stream a message to every cell phone in the world and people still wouldn’t get it.” - Cori

"She swallows down too many things she wants to get off her chest, and that should change before the weight crushes her." - Nick

⚠️ Make sure to check the trigger warnings before you read this book!! - this review may contain spoilers ⚠️

Cori has been treated horribly by her family and Sam, she has anxiety, she overthinkings a lot and is insecure, her parents say negative things about her looks and idea's. She grew up that way so it doesn't surprise me that Sam treats her that way too (if she's never been treated with respect and kindness, then that behavior is 'normal' for her). It's very hard to see self-worth, if everyone around her is so toxic. They find a way to belittle her, EVERY CHANGE THEY HAVE.

Nick is so good for her! He really sees her and he is helping her heal from all the toxic ways people have been treating her. He listens to her idea's about her work, eats late night snacks with her, and just loves her unconditionally. Cori loves coffee, books (relatable!!) and writing poetry and I really love that Nick and Cori encouraged each other to stand up for themselves and learn to to have dreams and take steps to achieve them, that was Nick's way of helping her see that she is her own person and deserves to be treated with respect and love and she also helps him, they are equal.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

What a delightful debut from Amanda Courtney! This novel reads like both a romance and a coming-of-age story, except the two main characters are both adults. However, the two protagonists, Cori and Nick, spend a great deal of time working through their own traumas and finding themselves as they are slowly but surely finding each other.

Ms. Courtney's writing is as mature as it is skillful, and I was surprised to learn that this was her first novel. Her attention to detail in both plot and character development make the story thoroughly engaging. I stayed up until after 2am just to finish it! (With zero regrets, I might add!)

While the romance is definitely a slow burn, the pacing of the plot is steady enough to keep the reader interested.

I literally have no complaints about this book!

I should add one caveat: the emotional traumas experienced by the main character, Cori, were intensely relatable for me, and there were times I had to put the book down for a bit to calm my own racing heart. I consider this to be a sign of excellence in the author's writing, however. The fact that I was able to relate so strongly to a fictional character merely demonstrates skillful character development on the part of the author.

I am grateful to Amanda Courtney for writing a book that not only felt at times like therapy for me but also had me weeping and cheering for the characters I grew to love so much.

*Note* I received this as an Advanced Reader Copy.

You know it's a great book when it makes you feel a whirlwind of emotions in just one read.

I'll be honest—I was frustrated at the start because the heroine seemed to be settling for the bare minimum, and not even for herself, but to please others. But the more I read, the more I couldn't put it down, eager to see her discover her worth and go after what she truly wanted and deserved.

Amanda did an incredible job developing her characters. Unless you were born with unshakable self-confidence, we've all been a little like Cory—doubting ourselves, hurt by words, even from the people who are supposed to love us the most. That's the magic of a talented author: when they make you empathize so deeply with a fictional character that you want to jump into the story, wanting to hug the heroine or even give her a good shake, just like you'd do with a friend.

Nick is the kind of man we all dream of having in our lives—attentive, compassionate, and a great listener. Despite his own struggles and the sense of failure he often feels, he will find his way and help Cory find hers as well.

It’s a slow-burn romance with some spice, but above all, it's a beautiful story about learning to love yourself. I absolutely recommend you to read it.

Thank you to Amanda for giving me the chance to be part of the ARC review team

🌸 e-ARC Review 🌸

I really enjoyed this book and felt deeply connected to the FMC. I'm genuinely impressed by how realistically the author portrayed an introverted, shy character struggling with anxiety. At times, her actions frustrated me—but in a way that felt real. That’s exactly how someone behaves when they’ve been constantly criticized, body-shamed, and made to feel like a failure or never good enough.

Feeling emotionally connected to a character is a sign of strong writing and well-developed characters. I loved how both main characters took slow but steady steps toward change and achieving their goals.

Nick was such a supportive presence—always encouraging Cori’s dreams and listening to her talk about the things she loves. Despite his own struggles, he was consistently there for her. I also adored Cori’s best friend, Hailey.

The poems between chapters added a beautiful depth to the story and really enhanced the narrative.

I don’t think I’ve ever related to a character more than I did with Cori.

✨ Tropes ✨

•He falls first (and harder)

•Dysfunctional family
•Slow burn
•Open door romance
•Happily Ever After
•Dual POV

The journey this debut author takes us on is nothing short of incredible. It’s certainly hard to believe this is a debut novel.

Cori is my favorite FMC I’ve read in a long time. She’s really relatable, especially to us “shy” introverted book worms. Those of us who question our worth, our words, our interactions, and how they may be perceived. I loved going on this journey with her to discover her self-worth and self-love. Honestly I felt like the romance portion played second fiddle, and a supporting role to her discovery of who she was and what she wanted out of life. And I found myself absolutely loving that.

I don’t want to speak much on the MMC’s, worrying I might spoil too much of the book. But there’s essentially two male leads. One runs around screaming “i’m a big red flag, carrying a bright red stop sign 🛑 “ the other is a man who has his own flaws, but still finds within himself to help support, and encourage our FMC to love herself, speak up for herself, and shoot for her dreams. He’s the green-est of green flags, and sorting through many similar things to our FMC.

-slow burn
-strangers to friends to lovers
-boyfriends roomate/friend
-forced proximity
-dysfunctional family
-finding self-worth
-HEA

Do yourself a favor and read it. And find yourself a shelf-trophy.

I finished reading this story, and I have to say it really resonated with me. Cori, the main character, is someone I found myself rooting for. She's in a relationship with her childhood friend, Sam, who seemed perfect when they were kids, but as adults, his ego really complicates things. It feels like every time Cori starts to get a grip on her life, something pulls her right back down, while everyone around her seems to be thriving.

What I loved most about the story was how relatable Cori’s journey is. She’s often met with criticism from those in her life, which made me feel for her. Thankfully, she has her best friend Hailey and Nick, who is Sam’s roommate, supporting her along the way. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Cori and Nick—they share a connection that goes beyond just being friends, and their developing relationship felt genuine and well-paced.

Nick’s backstory adds depth to the plot, especially given his own struggles after a sports injury. It’s refreshing to see how their experiences allow them to truly understand each other. Overall, the story beautifully highlights themes of self-discovery, friendship, and the importance of believing in yourself. I found it motivational and thought-provoking. If you enjoy character-driven stories that explore personal growth, I definitely recommend giving this one a read

ARC REVIEW! Thank you Amanda for the Arc!

This honestly might be my read of the year, Cori was such a relatable character and Nick was such a cutie!

Tbh reading about Cori and deeply relating to her made me wanna come out of my shell a bit, and I did. Just yesterday I made some new friends at my new job, now hopefully I can keep it up lol.

Cori and her families relationship really struck a cord with me. She’s just a girl who wants to hear “We’re proud of you” from her parents but gets a “that’s nice.” Also FUCK SAM, WE STRONGLY DISLIKE SAM HERE BOOOO BOO SAM, YOU FUMBLED SO HARD!!!

Nick is honestly my dream man if I was into men, a tattooed baddie that had his hopes and aspirations thrown away due to an injury and disappeared to come back and snag his friend/roommates girl who he was SIGNIFICANTLY nicer to? Sign me up, where the hell is my Nick?

Anyways, I’m excited to see what else Amanda has planned. Her writing style was immaculate. I was really able to put myself into Nick and Cori’s shoes and understand why they make the actions and choices they make and their motivations. I was also able to deeply relate to Cori to the point where I decided to put myself out there. Amanda, consider me a loyal reader! :)

I loved it!

What hurts the most is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. From the very first page Cori has you enthralled in her story and life. She leaves you wanting to know more, I simply couldn’t put this book down! The plus-size representation along with realistic portrayal of her struggles warmed my heart and drew me in. My favorite part is how she slowly comes into her confidence and stands up for herself. The slow romance between her and Nick is another favorite, the way they fall in love without even realizing it is to die for. I was rooting for Cori with every chapter I read; rooting for to find her confidence, for her to tell her family off, or at the very least her boyfriend. The romance was sweet and the ending sweeter. I hope that anyone picks up this book loves as much as I have and falls in love with both Cori and Nick all the same!

To Amanda Courtney the amazing author of this lovely story I can’t wait to see where you’ll take your characters next, and as an ARC reader I feel incredibly privileged to have read this book!

What Hurts The Most by Amanda Courtney has probably been my favorite ARC this past year!

If you were a chubby girl that grew up in a house where nothing you did was ever good enough and your looks were constantly under scrutiny, you kept yourself small to "be easy", if you lost all confidence due to it...because their voices were louder than your own, you accepted those things from everyone around you for a long time...you might relate so much to Cori, the FMC.

Amanda did an incredible job writing what it feels like to be a young woman who has persevered through that kind of life. She encapsulates the day to day and situational anxieties that develop through those traumas. I don't think I've ever related to a character more!

What Hurts The Most keeps you hooked! Introducing us to relatable characters while telling a slow burning story of a young woman finding her voice in the midst of a dysfunctional family and a questionable relationship.

I absolutely recommend this book. I look forward to continuing to get to know the characters in future books.

☕️The last book that touched my soul and stayed in the back of my mind was when I read Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan last year. It’s the one book I am always recommending to everyone. THIS book did just that. 🥰
☕️I’ve never related to a character as much as I did with the FMC, Cori. The people pleasing, the shyness, the people making you feel like you don’t amount to much and the constant self-doubt hit close to home. There were times my eyes got watery reading the book and it’s rare that that happens with me.
☕️It was beautifully written and flowed easily. I especially LOVED the playlist. I’m such a sucker for “soundtracks” to the book and it did not disappoint 😍🎶
☕️I am most definitely buying a physical copy of it! 😁

I got the privilege to read this book as an ARC!!

…and totally loved it! Cori, the FMC, is dating and living with her childhood crush, Sam. according to her parents, sam is‘the only right thing’ cori has ever done. Even though sam downplays her success and constantly forgets plans with her, cori doesn’t think she deserves better. WIth a jaded view of love, Cori bends over backwards to try and keep sam happy, despite the opinions of her best friend Hailey, and Her and Sam’s roommate, nick (the MMC). Cori begins to warm up to nick, despite her introverted nature, and confide in him with her struggles. Nick can’t stand seeing cori with Sam, He believes in her and her dreams, and hates to see sam stomp on them. He begins to realize it may be something more than that...Is there something else between them? Overall, this was a super addictive read and the ultimate slow burn!! I love how well nick supports anything cori is passionate about!

What Hurts the Most is the debut novel of Amanda Courtney and is a contemporary romance and is the story of Nick and Cori. This book contains some intense themes so please check your trigger warnings prior to reading.

The writing of this book is amazing and I would not have thought this was Amanda's debut novel. The depth of the emotions of the characters and the events they go thru is so well written and represented. The mental health rep was well done and made you feel all of the feelings that Cori was experiencing.

This is an amazing debut novel for Courtney and I cannot wait to read more of her work. The story was emotional, thought invoking and represented difficullt subjects well. If you are looking for an emotional read with a satisfying HEA, this is the perfect book for you.

Well done to Amanda for her debut novel. This book was a long winded emotional book which had me yelling at Cori the main character more than I would like to admit.
I went into this not re-reading the blurb and it was great not knowing what to expect. It was a nice story, showing a different side of a childhood friends to lovers situation, it evoked a lot of emotions from me but it was overall a great read.
One thought- I wasn't so 100% on the length of time she was degraded by people who are meant to love her and shrunk into herself. The last 30% of the book redeems it but I wished for more to happen with Nick and their was very closed spice. I would have loved them to re-enact a particular pirate scene ;)

I received an ARC copy from the author and was super excited to read it.

I have to admit that the first 30% is heavy on the anxiety, gaslighting, and borderline abusive dismissiveness towards the FMC, so proceed with caution, as it can be incredibly triggering. Please take care of your mental health.

With that said, once the FMC starts to find her voice, we see her slowly come out of her shell and what ensues is beautiful, heartbreaking, but also encouraging to those who may have had similar struggles. It shows that sometimes you only need one person who believes in you to help you figure out where you belong in this world.

Spice level is minimal and it’s definitely a slow burn, but a beautiful story of courage, transformation, and self-discovery.

ARC Review!

What Hurts the Most is about an FMC struggling to find her self-worth. I felt the romance was more of the backstory rather than at the forefront of the healing journey. However, that’s what makes Cori’s struggle to find her own voice that much more powerful.

I found myself start to become frustrated with the FMC about 3/4s of the way through the book. But, those emotions it elicited in me almost mirrored the frustration she felt with herself which then propelled the rest of the story.

I enjoyed this book with the rawness of emotion that it portrayed. I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to read this book as an ARC and cannot wait to purchase a physical copy of it when it releases!

ARC Review
⭐️Stars- 5

While this is a Contemporary Romance, it does include sensitive topics, so be sure to review the Trigger Warnings before proceeding.

Anxiety,
Self Harm,
Manipulation,
Gas Lighting,
Cheating,
Emotional Abuse,
Body Shaming,
Peer Pressure.

What Hurts The Most surprised me by diverging from my customary reading genre and keeping me engaged. Amanda's debut novel is an authentic contemporary romance with relatable characters, but I found myself taking breaks as Cori's characteristics and experiences resonated too closely with my own. I experienced a full spectrum of emotions while reading.

One thing I craved more of was the dynamic between Cori and Nick. I anticipate great things from Amanda in the future. Congratulations on your accomplishment.

I received this book as an arc, thank you for giving me the chance to read it!!
This book is amazing- and I cannot believe it’s a debut book for this author.
Cori- her shyness & her whole character is extremely relatable. The whole story could have been a real life scenario, which just made the book that much better. This book is a true Slow Burn, hahaha and makes you wish the book was a tad bit longer.
Nick- I really like him as well. He’s the person you want in your corner, who can help you see the potential in yourself.
Nick is Cori’s boyfriends roommate. Boyfriend is meh, but Nick is there to lift Cori up. Be a listening ear when nobody else will.
Overall, 5 stars and I would definitely recommend anyone to read this book.
I so cannot wait to see what Amanda writes next and follow along with her author journey.

Where do I start? This book strip me naked and I'm facing myself in it.
Cori was all me, I used to be like her. But Im still the one hard to talk or express anything, because yes words are hard for me, I overthink everything what I want or going to say. This novel consists all the anxiety things and they help each other (unbeknownst to them) in their decision making for their own future.
I really love this book its a masterpiece, its a life story, a life changing in good and in bad, a path. Ignore me if you think I overhyped this book, I love it in anyway 🤣
Its a happy ending and its been a long time since I cry a happy tears 🥹.
- arc review and I this is my own opinion.
