I had some difficulty getting into it at some points but I'm glad that I kept reading it was actually a good book
I love trying to figure out what was going on before the Detective but boy I was wrong. It was honestly such a Rollercoaster but in a good way
This eerie and chilling story had my mind spinning and my heart aching!
Thomas Belger finds himself in a dire situation-either he must solve the mystery of murders happening in Port Nataliana or go to debtors prison. He reluctantly takes on the challenge to discover the perpetrators of the daily murders happening in Port Nataliana but quickly realizes that it might be more than just a ghost behind these deaths, and that something or someone has brought a legend of the past to life. Thomas teams up with his nephew, Victor, as well as the local constable’s daughter, Clive, to investigate the murders. They all realize that there is much more at stake, and with the growing hostility towards the new factory promising prosperity, Thomas is even more determined to stop the murders.
This story had me captivated from beginning to end! And the story’s ending was a complete surprise that I was not expecting. There are some darker themes which I felt the author did a great job writing about, especially since this story was originally written when the author was only 15 years old, and is now being translated for publication. I was completely entranced by this story and cannot wait to read the next installment of the Allasneda Mysteries.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but am leaving my thoughts and review happily and voluntarily.
I am so excited to announce that I am a part of Sascha Hannig's ARC Team for, The Clocktower and the Scientist, through @haylingbookstorm Master ARC Team.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is my first ARC book, and I want to be really honest with my opinion.
I absolutely loved the plot, the characters and the setting. It is unlike anything I have ever read before. Thomas is a scientist in trouble. In order to get out of this trouble, he needs to solve a crime. With lots of action along the way, I did NOT see the ending coming, I was totally blindsided! 👌
I did struggle to get into the book at first as I found the style of the author difficult to get along with. Some of the vocabulary choices were strange and the transitions felt a little immature. This is possibly because it was written by a 15 year old! This book is an amazing piece of work for someone so young! It was published in 2011 so would love to read something more recent as I am sure her style has developed over the years.
This book was really a wild ride. I will admit in the beginning I was a little confused but the world building brought my up to speed very quickly. Thomas Belger is a scientist who is in trouble with the law, in order to avoid jail he must go to a small town and help the police solve a string of murders that doesn't seem to be stopping. When he goes to the town, with his nephew Victor, what they find there is a mystery.
I really enjoyed the world building and as I read more I really got into the story. Also, I was a little confused on Thomas' age at first, in the beginning I imagined him as a man in his late 30's-40's, but as I kept reading it states that he is only 9 years older than Vitor who is 14, which would make Thomas around 23. That makes way more sense to the love connection between him and Clive.
Great story, I loved the twist at the end. Just when I thought it was going to end one way, or one person was the murderer, it changed again and again!

Thomas Belger is a scientist posed with an impossible decision. Go to jail or solve a string of murders in a precarious small town. Along the way he finds Clive who is an unlikely sidekick but one who Thomas attaches himself to very quickly.
This murder mystery is a little dark so check your content warnings as well as your triggers. I personally struggled with the mention of suicide as a means of murder.
I think this book was really well written, and I believe that if you are a lover of murder mysteries with a hint of paranormal activity this is a book for you!!

This book surprised me for many reasons...the first of all that earns it a thousand points is because we find a thriller mixed with fantasy not to mention the Victorian setting....😍😍😍....We also find witches and ghosts and for this reason I added it to my personal list of books to read or as in this case to reread at Halloween... it is full of twists and turns that make you stay glued to the pages... for all these reasons absolutely you should read it and I give it a 5 ⭐. and I definitely want to read other books by this author
ARC Review ✨️ ☆Horror Fantasy♡ This book contains so many amazing features! It involves witches and ghosts, and the fact that it was set in the Victorian era is amazing. Honestly, it was my favorite part about this story! Also, the fact that this author displayed some incredible world building and mixed a thriller with fantasy is phenomenal👏👏🙌 It has some crazy plot twists and the perfect amount of suspense and magic✨️🖤 It's going on my list of top 5 favorite reads of March most definitely🙌👏
This was such an interesting read! Definitely not all that I expected, but it held my interest from start to finish!!
Thomas is a scientist, and is tasked with having to solve a mystery in a small town, in order to stay out of jail, but it was so fun to watch him unravel it.
I loved Clyde and how she handled the situations that arose, typically running headfirst with zero hesitation. She was brash and relentless and I was there for it.
The pacing was odd sometimes, but it was a short book and could’ve been longer in order to flesh-out certain parts, but other than that I definitely enjoyed it!
This book is written extremely well. There’s is a lot of detail within the story building. It is definitely one that takes a lot of focus but it is worth it. If you like murder mystery then this book is right up your alley. This book pulls at your heart strings but also has you trying to answer every question that is asked. Trying to help Thomas solve this murder mystery. The ending was something I wasn’t expecting at all. It’s definitely a turn you will never think of. This book was originally published in 2011 but has since been translated into English and is being published now. There are a few points where you can tell that it has been translated/ written by a 15 year old at the time, but other than that I truly enjoyed every second of this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters come to life with each and every page, and Port Nataliano feels like an actual place. The way the mystery is paced is gripping. I definitely recommend it and wish there was a book to continue the story. Sascha is an amazing writer and I can't wait to read more of her books!
Rating: 3.25/5 Penguins (rounded down) Quick Reasons: fast-paced but slightly confusing plotline; the world building was interesting, but hard to follow; intriguing characters with mostly believable motivations; rich, lush prose; not a happily ever after....but will leave you thinking at the end
HUGE thanks to Sascha Hannig, Editorial Pluma Digital Publishing, and Hayling Bookstorm for the title! My review is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by the gesture.
I really, really wanted to like this read, Penguins. It's not the same genre I typically go for; the prose was richly detailed and lushly imagined. The story was fast-paced. The characters were intriguing, with believable motivations. There was fantasy, paranormal happenings, and steampunk themes woven throughout. The ending was not a happily-ever-after...but left me with a lot to ponder and reflect on. I was entertained, and it was super easy to "fall" into this world and stay there for the duration (which, for how short the read is, really wasn't that long.)
"We are at a point between worlds," clarified Alice. "The world where the dead we didn't leave behind stay, an inert and energetic limbo," she clarified to her.
Unfortunately, this just wasn't the right read for me. I found a lot of the plot to be lacking in the WHYs. We jumped straight into the heart of this story, making me feel as if maybe there is a former book I should have read--as if this were book 2 or even 3 in a series, instead of a "stand alone." I had a hard time keeping pace with what was happening, because the story kept shifting on me in what seemed to be mid-thought or mid-context explanation. While for the most part I was able to decipher and understand, I found myself wishing the story were more seamless and less haphazard feeling. This took away a lot of my ability to suspend my disbelief, instead finding myself trying to figure out the pieces I felt I was missing from the story.
Still, this was an entertaining and fast-paced read, and just because it wasn't the journey for me, does not mean it won't be the journey for YOU. I would recommend this to lovers of gaslamp mysteries with paranormal fantasy elements, and those who don't mind a book ending on a NOT so happy note. Are you ready to solve the mystery of the Clock Tower, Penguins? Allasneda awaits you.
Penned in 2011 when the author was just fifteen years old, The Clock Tower and the Scientist tells the story of scientist, inventor and would-be detective Thomas Belger, who plans to evade prison by solving a mystery of unexplained deaths. Belger suspects a ghost may be involved but needs to investigate further. On arrival in the small village, he meets Clive, a beguiling young woman who is determined to join him on his quest.
Initially, I found this book quite hard to get into but the flow of the story got much better from around 30%. The plot is good and it held my interest well, with a great reveal. This story involves inventing, a touch of the paranormal, mystery, romance; a lot of elements. The fifteen- year-old Sascha Hannig clearly had a keen eye for a tempting tale. As the author was so young when this was written, I'd be really interested to catch up on more recent work to see how their writing has matured.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Persevere and it'll pay off! I received an ARC from @haylingbookstorm, and this is my honest review.
A classic thriller/mystery. Thomas has been tasked with figuring out why or who is killing off all people in Port Nataliano or go to jail. Rumor has it a ghost is killing everyone… surely that should be easy enough to figure out.
It has some interesting plot twists and turns.
I loved the quick witty banter between Clive and Thomas.
Mystery, ghosts, murder, forbidden love, heartbreak, loss, death, betrayal, quirky characters, family secrets this novella has it all.
I really enjoyed this story. It had the right amount of creepiness to it. I felt a few different types of emotions throughout the story, but definitely was sad at the end. I'm impressed that the author started this story at the age of 13. I can't wait to read the next books and go back to Allasneda!
A big thank you to haylingbookstorm & Sascha Hannig for giving me the chance to be on the ARC team.
"Phantoms don't go on a killing spree 'just because'. Most of the time, murderers get away because they hide under legends and specters."
The Clock Tower and the Scientist is a chilling fantasy, contains a bit of sci-fi and elements of horror. Thomas Belger is a scientist who owes many debts and who, at one point, previously solved the case of a string of murders. Due to his past, he is recruited to help figure out why townspeople in Port Nataliano keep dying at 3:21 pm, which seems to be linked to a curse and a ghost thirsty for revenge His reward for solving this mystery is his debts paid, or if he chose not to find the culprit, going to jail. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Thomas decides to try solve this mysterious case.
I was enthralled with this story and it kept me guessing. In the end, I wasn't able to identify the culprit before it was revealed, which is love! I will warn that this story isn't a happy one (pay attention to content warnings), and I felt so badly for Thomas in the end.
Port Nataliano is based on the author's childhood community of Caulin, Chile. The author ends that this is the first of 4 short stories, (and the first the author has translated), taking place in this world and the story does end on a cliffhanger. I would definitely pick up the other short stories in this world, if the author chooses to translate them.
I did receive this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Content Warning: suicide, murder, child death, some graphic imagery
I was fortunate enough to be included in Sascha Hannig's ARC team for "The Clock Tower and the Scientist".
In order to avoid a lifetime in prison Thomas Belger an inventor and scientist agrees to travel to a small town to help solve a series of unexplainable murders that have taken place in the town. In his travels he meets Clive and his world gets flipped upside-down.
This book was definitely a unique reading experience for me. Different then the stuff I normally read, nevertheless I enjoyed this book . According to the Author this book is the first of four stories that occur in the Fictional world of Allasneda. This book is also the first of the 4 that have been translated into English and was written by the Author when she was only 15! Which I must say is pretty impressive for a 15 year old. That being said the writing style is simple and not overly complex, however I was still engaged enough throughout this story to want to know more about all the characters.
Being honest, the pacing of this book initially is a little slow, but the plot and the character development picks up as you continue to read. Without giving anything away I will say I did not predict the ending whatsoever and I absolutely loved that.
Would I recommend this book ? Yes! Especially if you are looking for a quick, easy to follow book with an engaging plot with a paranormal mystery element to it!
I generally enjoyed this book! It was my first mystery so I did struggle a little to get into it but once I hit about 45% the way in, I started to really get into the book! It has such an interesting concept and I love how ghosts and witch craft was throughout! It was almost like a fantasy, mystery vibe and it truly kept me wanting to read! I was clueless to the ending, and I honestly start crying in the last 10 pages…a very good book and I think it was a good one to give the mystery genre a try! I’m quite excited to see what the next books have to offer! Would definitely recommend!!
I truly enjoyed reading this book. Even if at first it has a bit of a slow pacing, the story quickly gets you. It builds a wonderful and intriguing world that only makes you want to read more and more. The characters are lovable and intriguing as well, and the plot itself is very well written. I would absolutely recommend!!!
🧪 Features various creatures like witches and ghosts 🧪 Blends fantasy and suspense seamlessly 🧪 Plot is full of suspense and magical twists 🧪 Thomas uncovers the mystery engagingly 🧪 Clyde handles situations admirably 🧪 Skepticism prevails amidst mysterious deaths 🧪 Romance is subtle yet fitting 🧪 Pacing feels a bit off at times 🧪 Explores themes of grief, heartbreak, and love
A spooky adventure with a breathtaking ending. I couldn’t let go of this book, trapped in the mystery and the emotional tone of it. It does contain some gore or explicit paragraphs (the sound of bones crushing and the image of a rotting corpse). I loved the protagonist as a tragic hero that does not want to be in his own shoes. I found his feelings of obsession and jealousy believable even though is a fantasy/science fiction book. I cannot wait until the author translates the next one!
