4⭐
Genre ~ crime thriller
Setting ~ UK
Publication date ~ August 25, 2023
Page Count ~ 348 (p+ 40 chapters)
Audio length ~ 10 hours 44 minutes
Narrator ~ Penelope Rawlins
POV ~ single 1st & 3rd
Featuring ~ serial killer, murder, violence, assault

Hannah (24) is doing well in therapy and just trying to live her life 10 years after she escaped a serial killer and earned the title Lucky Number 11. Hannah Allen is a name that practically everyone has heard of, but now even more so that there is copycat killer. She's right back in the spotlight, a place she has no desire to be.

I'm thrilled that we had some chapters from Conrad, the detective back then and still today. I found him to be a great detective and I liked how protective he was of Hannah. There are some chapters from the killer to keep you guessing, too.

I was hoping the copycat killer wouldn't turn out to be who I thought it might be, so I was pleasantly surprised with who it was since I didn't see it coming. Can't say I liked the reasoning they did what they did, but I suppose that's how psychopaths minds work.

Overall, a well written, engaging and suspenseful story. It was fast paced with non stop action. I enjoyed my first book by this author and look forward to reading more.

*Thanks to the author, Kingsley Publishers and NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*

I was able to listen to an audio copy as well.
Narration notes:
Her regular voice was fine, but I was not feeling her other character voices. She tried, though, she really did, but some were not great at all and really grated on my ears. She was properly frantic, so that helped with what was happening with the character.

Absolutely brilliant.
Jess Kitching, you are becoming an auto buy author. For me, your books just keep getting better.
This book really has something special. The plot is fast paced and oh so gripping, as always from this author. But the character writing is utterly superb. The implications in real life for survivors of violence is portrayed so well, my heart ached for the characters. The shame and guilt they feel is so powerful, it shines a beacon onto these people and asks some really important questions about how they recover, and how far society goes in helping them to do that.
This is a must read.

This is a book about a young girl who was abducted by a serial killer. She survives.

She attends a support group to help her overcome her past. While attending this group, another body is found. It has similar markings to previous victims.

It becomes clear to her; someone wants her dead.

I gave these one 5 stars. It's no secret how talented this author is. Both books of hers I have given 5 stars.

I read a lot of thriller, crime and true crime boos and this was a book with a plot I hadn't come across yet. Love when that happens.

I loved how it focused mostly on the victim, the support group. It was not only thrilling but emotional as well.

The ending was what i loved most about this book. It goes to show, never presume, I did and I was very wrong.

Highly recommend.

Where do I even start talking about this amazing book? I have read both of Jess’ previous books, but Lucky Number 11 is just another level. My new favourite. It is dark, it is intense, it is brilliant.

I was starting to feel like a reading slump was coming on when I picked this book up. I had read so many incredible books in July, and nothing was quite doing it for me. Thank you Jess for sorting that problem out. Lucky Number 11 is everything that I love in a crime book. There is a serial killer, a police detective who will not give up, a main character who made me love them and so much more. It is not often that I cry reading this genre, but this book is full of emotion that the tears were falling.

I messaged Jess while ai was reading it, at about halfway through and told her it was going to be my new favourite of her books. The setting, the writing, the chapters from the killer’s perspective, oh it sucked me right in. I was kinda cranky at myself for not reading it sooner and starting it late at night when I had to work the next day. It is one of those books just want to keep going.

I loved that Jess is so open about her feelings and it really shows in this book. If you do not love Hannah Allen you have ice in your heart. I just wanted to reach out and hug her.

Have I convinced you yet? This is a must read, get your pre orders in now.

Thank you to Jess and Kingsley Publishing for the advanced copy to read. An absolute pleasure.

Jess Kitching doesn’t just write a book she writes an experience that the reader joins her in,this, her 3rd book is unique but at the same times follows the authors impeccable writing skills which combine her traumatic and shocking life experiences with the ability to craft a chilling, dark and yet scarily believable story
It is a very moving read, full of emotion and even more so when you read the acknowledgements,I would agree with the statement that the book has triggers but if you can get through them it is more than worth it and indeed may help some readers
The plot cleverly had red herrings, more than that I wont say as don't want to give anything away
Approach this book expecting to feel uncomfortable at times, challenged and angered and to be held in its powerful grip, this author goes from strength to strength and I am happy to be one of those who supports her.

This is Jess’s third book. I’ve read them all and have to say this is my absolute favourite of hers.

At age 14, Hannah was kidnapped by a serial killer. She was his intended 11th victim … but escaped. The trauma, has understandably never really left her. So when, ten years later a body is found bearing the same markings the serial killer that abducted her, left on his victims, her carefully constructed life is turned upside down.

This book is full of twists and turns, but also quite emotional - there are some TWs that you might want to check out.
Fast paced, propulsive, chilling and utterly brilliant!

Many thanks to @kingsleypublishers for and advanced reading copy.

Wow! 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. This book is really well-done, but it is heavy. It involves serial murders, abuse, victim blaming, survival, mental health, true friendship (both female and male) and oh my, there is plenty of suspense. I found myself suspecting so many of the characters throughout the book. Kitching also does a fabulous job of putting the reader in the main character’s place - her feelings, thoughts, fears, and shocking physical and emotional trauma. I found myself completely immersed in everything Hannah was going through. Be sure to read the acknowledgements where Kitching explains her motivation and inspiration for addressing these serious and complex topics. Thank you to NetGalley and Kingsley Publishers for the eARC.

Special thanks to the publisher for providing a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

When Hannah Allen was fourteen years old, she was abduced on her way home from school and held captive by a serial killer named Peter Harris. Harris had previously killed all ten women he had abducted, so when Hannah was rescued alive, and Harris was captured, the media dubbed her “Lucky Number Eleven”. But Hannah didn’t feel so lucky as she tried to rebuild her life while dealing with the challenges of her traumatized childhood. Now, it is ten years later and Hannah is finally able to hold down a job and maintain a long-term relationship and she is considering stepping away from the therapy group she has attended since her attack. But then the police detective who rescued her pays Hannah a visit and informs her that another body was been found and there are many similarities to Harris’ murders. But with Harris in jail, the copycat murderer has one intention- to target “Lucky Number Eleven” and make sure this time, Hannah pays with her life.

Jess Kitching's newest novel,” Lucky Number Eleven” is a deliciously twisted psychological suspense story that is part police procedural and part serial-killer-on-a-revenge-killing-spree. In my mind, this has all the makings of a page-turner and “Eleven” definitely checked a lot of boxes for me.

The novel is narrated by Hannah and Conrad (the police detective), with italicized portions attributed to the unidentified murderer. Both Hannah and Conrad are damaged, dysfunctional and utterly likable, building a quick rapport and making them both easy to root for. There are enough background characters to generate a decent potential suspect list, without being inundated with names and relationships, and for this, I give Kitching full props. She managed to surprise me with the ending, and this is not a common occurrence for me with novels in this genre.

“Eleven” has some heavy subject matter (childhood trauma, abuse, kidnapping, domestic violence, to name a few) but she counters that by including the awe-inspiring stories of survival and human connection. It is a challenge to find moments of positivity in novels like this, but Kitching warmed my heart with the “Sisters” support group and their ability to lean on and support one another. “Eleven” manages to highlight not only the evil and sinister parts of humanity, but also the empathic and resilient parts that connect us.

Well-written, creative and chilling, “Lucky Number Eleven” has me intrigued and I’m looking forward to Kitching’s next work.

I found this fascinating and well written for the mystery thriller it was. The ghost was a perfect name for this monster-serial killer. The writing had me questioning everyone and so many victims in it. You’ll be on the edge of your seat with this. Social media played a huge part in this story and it made me sick. It’s clear we have our favorites.

Even with working a full-time job, I can usually read a book in two days, but with LUCKY NUMBER 11, the tension was so palpable, the dread so intense, that it took me four days to read this book.

When Hannah Allen was 14 years old, she was abducted by serial killer Peter Harris, dubbed "The Ghost" by the media because of his elusiveness. She was meant to be his 11th victim, with the tell-tale tattoo already carved into her flesh. However, thanks to a miraculous rescue, she lived...but what kind of life could a trauma survivor be expected to have?

Thanks to an understanding boyfriend and a low-key job at a coffee shop, Hannah is living quietly; while she may not be thriving, she's surviving. But when a body is found bearing eerie similarities to Peter's work, Hannah realizes that someone is continuing his grim work. When taunting notes start to appear on her doorstep, she knows it's only a matter of time before she becomes a victim yet again.

This book was so much more than just a tense thriller. It really opened my eyes to what it means to be a survivor of something so life-changing. Hannah's entire life was put under by a microscope, she was judged by strangers, and she constantly found herself at odds with inner dialogue such as, "it wasn't my fault" vs. "If only I hadn't walked home that way." As a true crime junkie, I will admit there can be a certain voyeuristic, seedy nature to it, but this book reminded me that a victim's life is often exploited for mere entertainment purposes.

Many thanks to Kingsley Publishers for sending me an early copy. LUCKY NUMBER 11 will publish August 25, 2023.

3.5 stars rounded up

Hannah was 14-years-old when she was kidnapped and then became the only survivor of serial killer Pete Harris. Ten years later she is engaged, househunting, has a job she loves, and attends weekly group therapy sessions. When a body is found with similar injuries to Pete’s victims, Hannah worries that there is a copycat killer and that she might be next.

I love books about serial killers. This moved quickly and I really liked Hannah’s character. I absolutely loved the group sessions - the friendships, the women-empowering-women, and the messages about how victims are often treated by the media and people online. I’m glad the ending wrapped up nicely but it felt a little rushed.

There were some tough parts to read so definitely check the trigger warnings.

This is the 2nd book by Jess Kitching that I have recently read and once again I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lucky Number 11 is about a young woman, Hannah Allen who was abducted by a serial killer called Peter Harris when she was 14 years old and managed to escape, but only after 10 other victims were viciously raped and murdered. The media dubbed her Lucky Number 11 and she’s tried to live her life out of the public eye since then.

10 years later, with Harris still in prison, Hannah is living with her boyfriend and working in a coffee shop. Slowly rebuilding her life through the help of therapy at a survivors group and staying under the radar from the press, Hannah is ready to move on.

However, when a body is found with several similarities to Harris’ other victims, the police have a copycat on their hands and it looks increasingly like this killer is after Hannah too.

Despite the subject matter, which some readers may feel are triggering; abuse, kidnapping, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, the author tackles these with consideration and care.

Another fabulous page-turner, guaranteed to keep you wondering who is the killer. With plenty of redherrings thrown in, I will admit to not being able to work out who and why until the end.

Wow, normally if I don’t like a book there are at least other negative reviews who agree with me. For some reason I am the first and, with all the positive reviews, I think I’m going to be rather unpopular. The author sort of gets human psychology to a point, but then, I am sorry, but this book ends in a quite ridiculously implausible scenario. And I didn’t really like it much anyway. Sorry, but this book is shit. And the narrator of the audio book, who I normally like, had to read this book in another accent which irritated me more. I know many people are going to disagree with me about this one.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked a lot of it and it felt like a compelling story and liked the overall resolution, growth of the main character. But the villain and the motivation didn't feel believable and took me away from what was good about the book. The issues it talked about, the aftermath of trauma and how to build a new life 3.5 rounded up

Jess Kitching is a wiz at a great, shocking twist and with her third book out in the wild, Lucky Number 11 is one that should be on everyone’s lips.
A powerful, sublime and clever read that takes you on an experience and an impressive journey.
It’s dark at times but so strongly and deeply written, the words rise from the paper with dominance.
Hannah Allen was abducted by a serial killer, Peter, in her teens.
But she survived and Peter was caught.
She was supposed to be his number eleven victim.
Ten years and therapy later, Hannah has learned to live with what happened.
Then a body is found bearing the same abuse and wounds.
It soon becomes quite apparent that someone is continuing Peter’s legacy.
A very bright, emotive and relatable thriller story.
It will get you thinking, assuming and using your detective hat.
A gripping narrative that contains elements of horror, suspense and moments of trauma.
I’ve been very impressed by all of Jess’s books and now I excitedly await what dastardly tale she brings us next.

Lucky Number 11 is how a murder murder mystery should be written!
It was thrilling! It was enthralling! It was captivating! It kept you guessing!
I did not guess the killer! Consider myself shocked! What a bloody moment that was!
I was pointing fingers left right and centre, I'd be a terrible detective haha!
My heart was feeling for Hannah throughout. She survived a serial murderer and finally moved on with her life only for a copycat killer to throw her off course again and put her in the limelight. More specifically, hunt her down too!
I was hooked on this book! I highly suggest anybody that hasn't read it to pick it up! You won't regret it!

"𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗲"

Brace yourselves for yet another thrilling and heart pulsing read from the amazing @jesskitchingwrites! If that first line doesn't grab you and pull you right in then I'm not sure what ever will!

Hannah, aged 14 kidnapped by a serial killer, Peter Harris. Intended to be Peter’s 11th victim but Hannah escapes.. she escapes the hands of the serial killer but can she ever really escape the trauma?

A decade later, just as Hannah is starting to overcome the trauma of her past, a body is found bearing the numerical branding Peter had inflicted on his victims. But Peter is incarcerated so how could that be? Someone is out there continuing Peter's work and it seems that someone wants Hannah dead!

This certainly had me enthralled and I just did not want to stop reading!
This story is dark with some heavy topics and it is personal and it is written so incredibly that you truly feel Hannah's pain and fear!

The twists will keep you guessing and even when you think you have it worked out, you won't!

I have been a big fan of Jess's since the beginning of her writing journey and I can truly say she is an author that never disappoints!

This was a quick read, and you will love Hannah from the very beginning. I think she was such a strongly written character, considering what she went through at the hands of a serial killer. This book also gave great insight into what it is like to be the survivor of an event that made national headlines.

There is plenty of suspense in this book, as well as some great twists and turns. I did feel that the end was a little rushed and that the killers motive didn't make a lot of sense to me, but overall, this was a really good book!

Be sure to read the author's note at the end. A lot of her experience as an assault victim went into the writing of this book.

Big thanks to Kingsley publishers & Jess Kitching!
(Side note: my dog's name is Kingsley so this is the BEST publishing house name EVER!)

I got to read "How to Destroy Your Husband" by Jess Kitching last year and it was one of my favorite reads so I was EXCITED for more from this author. I thought Lucky Number 11 was good and it gets 4 stars from me.

Would recommend if you love:
-serial killer vibes (times two!)
-a sisterhood group that gives alllll the support to each other (LOVE)
-questionable characters; like WHO CAN I TRUST
-quick paced and thrilling moments throughout

I had it figured out who was the big bad pretty early on buuut I was totally wrong LMAOOO like I was so convinced ha!
This was fast paced, lots of thrilling moments when Hannah thinks the killer may be after her. I liked the chapters from the killer's perspective sprinkled in. They were super creepy and you could tell how obsessed the killer is with Hannah. I think Hannah undergoes some solid character development and I adored the ending of this even despite the super shitty thing that happens too.

Lucky Number 11 is a standalone psychological thriller by author Jess Kitching. This book was my first read by this author and it truly left a lasting impression. The story revolves around Hannah Allen who ten years after narrowly escaping the clutches of a serial killer is just trying to live her life and recover from the horrific encounter. Her carefully crafted life is upturned when a body bearing the same signature, she knows all too well is discovered prompting Police to question if a copy cat killer is picking up where the last killer left off.

Narrated mostly from Hanna’s POV, the story also offers glimpses into the mind of other characters including the Police detective and the killer themselves. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to uncover the truth behind this chilling mystery. With an array of potential suspects and cleverly placed red herrings this story offers up a puzzling mystery that will keep you guessing. I had a lot of fun trying to guess the truth only to be blind sided upon the final reveal.

What sets this book apart is the realistic depiction of trauma and the devastating impacts on the lives of those who survive such horrors. Its easy to relate to the characters presented here and feel a strong sense of empathy for them.

I can say that I will certainly be exploring more of this authors books in the future and will keep an eye out for future releases. I’d highly recommend this gripping tale of horror, trauma and suspense.

Lucky Number 11 was a dark, gripping, page turning thriller! I was intrigued right from the start and this chilling suspenseful novel had me guessing right up to the very end.

This was my first Jess Kitching novel and will not be my last. Kitching’s writing style flowed effortlessly. The plot had a distinct structure which made this exigent to put down. I loved how the suspense and tension crept up slowly as the book progressed, to a point where I could feel Hannah's (the main character) fear and paranoia. Hannah's character was not only realistic, it was flawed. In fact, all the characters were authentic and erroneous. However, Hannah’s persona stood out more because she was incredibly powerful & sensitive as compared to the supporting characters. It was arduous not to feel empathy for Hannah and all the struggles she encountered. I admired her determination to try and live a normal life while she lived with the physical and mental scars left by her captor.

In addition to the genuinely broken characters, I loved how Kitching addressed deep topics of trauma, death, support groups. She truly portrayed how essential a strong support system is in healing from hurt so deep you couldn’t have gotten out of it alone.

All in all, Lucky Number 11 was a book of fiction-informed by reality. It was not only a gripping suspenseful thriller it was one of survival-that at times was utterly heartbreaking and breathtaking all at the same time.

Name : Lucky Number 11
Author : Jess Kitching
Genre : Psychological thriller
❗Trigger alert : Abuse, Rape❗

You guys probably know now how much I love thrillers by now. Now throw in a psychological thriller, I dived in the book eyes closed, waiting to be, well, thrilled 😍.

My last read by the author had blew my mind. Seriously. Very few books have this much toxic characters. So I had assumed the same for this book also. But here, the characters were quite opposite. Everyone is SO NICE. So nice that at one point I had started to wonder, "Is there someone pretending then?" and Bingo! I was correct.

The protagonist is an abuse and rape survivor. So it was quite unnerving to read from her POV. Her words gave me new insight into the minds of survivors and how much they struggle to appear 'normal' in their daily lives when everything inside them screams the opposite. Her character is very well written. The group therapy sessions that she went to, healed ME in fact (we all have repressed trauma I guess). I loved it when someone in that group said that trauma is trauma, there is no level or rate chart. Violation is wrong, no matter what the way is.

Which leads us to our serial killer. No matter how much they tried to explain their reasons for murdering, tbh to me, it didn't make sense. Unless they were a really crazy psychopath. Given how they and Hannah met, it was really hard for me to understand why they did it. So it was a bit anticlimatic for me at the end, given how much I was expecting some major twist after some chapters that felt a bit slow to me. Again, my opinion only, since I like fast paced thrillers the best.
.
Story and character development was really good and VERY real. I would like to commend the author for portraying all survivors' lives so realistically. Also, this book made me realise how much I detest clickbaits, invasion of privacy and the dramatization of news by journalists and news media. They keep saying that it's their job, but is it though really? Today, if I open a news TV channel in my region, I know all I will get to watch is a circus and no actual discovery of truth, which IS actually their job. Nobody is thinking for us, common people, they are all filling their pockets. Unlike this book's journalist character, nobody has a change of mentality IRL sadly.
.
In conclusion, it was a good thriller read and for the first time, in a long while, a book, where I couldn't guess correctly who the culprit is exactly. 🙈
.
P.S. I was soo happy to see 'God Of Small Things ' getting mentioned in this book 🤩.

Hannah Allen has come a long way since being abducted at the age of fourteen. Intended to be serial killer Peter Harris's eleventh victim, she's the one that survived.

Friendship and therapy has shaped the young woman Hannah is today, ten years on. She's in a healthy relationship and has a job that she enjoys immensely. Hannah's more than ready to take on the world, even planning to attend her last ever support group meeting.

Then a body is found, bearing similar inflictions to Peter Harris's victims- even the branded numerical tattoo carved into skin.

But Hannah's abductor is safely behind bars. So who's behind the fresh attacks? Whoever they are, they're seeking Hannah's attention.

And Hannah knows them well....

I'm absolutely blown away with Lucky Number 11. Hannah is a character I instantly felt connected to, thanks to Jess's brilliant ability to place me directly into her shoes. I became Hannah so fast that I didn't even realise it. And ohmygosh, what I experienced as her hit HARD.

There was a moment or two where I thought I had it all figured out, but damn, who else can't wrap their heads around the massive identity and motive reveal?!

Congratulations Jess, for turning your own lived experiences into a difficult yet addictive and passionate read that speaks volumes.

4.75 🌟

I was excited to grab this read as soon as it released, as I was on the edge of my seat with Jess’s first two thrillers.

This one is a little different to most thrillers I’ve read. Sure, there is a copycat serial killer on the loose, but this story is more about the main character Hannah’s trauma and how she deals with it in light of unravelling developments. I felt her fear, panic and confusion along with her, as she faced the harrowing fact that she could not fully trust anyone in her life. She’d come so far in her healing, only to be targeted again. I love this, as I am fascinated by humans’ ways of dealing with trauma, healing and general life than I am in the killer hunting down their victims.

The book includes a healthy dose of discourse on misogyny, (including the internal kind) victim-blaming and toxic masculinity. I loved that Jess wasn’t afraid to delve into these issues when it would’ve been easy to leave it as just another murder mystery.

Some parts of this book were disturbing; I’ll need to read something sweet and lovey-dovey next to counteract that, but the fearlessness in the writing makes this story stand out from others. I’ll always pick up one of Jess’s books, she only gets better and better with each release.

Fantastic work, Jess!
