I've never experienced a production quite like this before! Anna Lea's full-cast dramatization of George Orwell's 1984, one of my absolute favorite books, is simply stunning. And the sound design, including the recording itself, is absolutely brilliant.
First off: I have never read the original novel, but I can see why this production won awards. The dramatization seems to be well done.
My problem comes with the story itself. I never got into it and actually dreaded turning it back on. I only stuck it out because it was less than four hours, and I needed a classic for my summer bingo. This book is demented, atrocious, and horrifying, and the worst part is that it does not seem too far off from the current state of American politics. Every time I listened to part of this I was left feeling icky and depressed.
If I could rate this production higher I would. I love this book, I’ve read it multiple times since high school and each time I see it differently. This production was bone chilling and immersive in a way I have never felt while reading this book. It captures the horror of the story so well. Given the current state of American politics it hits even harder. Will you betray those around you when asked? When pressured? When threatened? Or will it take torture to make you break?
First time listening to a dramatized audiobook like this. Very well done and I would love to listen to more books this way. That being said, this one was really intense and made me feel sick and I will not be listening to this specific book again in this format 😀
