Grief doesn’t wait until you’re ready. And neither does healing.
Melissa Bainbridge’s world shatters the moment her husband’s death is ruled a suicide. Left with three children, mounting bills, and a hollow ache where her marriage used to live, Melissa isn’t just mourning a man—she’s mourning the life she thought she had. But loss has a way of revealing truths we never dared to see. As Melissa unearths the remnants of her husband’s inner world, what she finds isn’t closure—it’s complexity. Love tangled in silence. Pain hidden behind everyday smiles. And a woman’s desperate need to understand the man she thought she knew. Providence is an intimate, soul-stirring journey through the shadows of grief, the weight of unanswered questions, and the quiet, relentless pursuit of hope. With raw honesty and emotional depth, it explores what it means to forgive the unforgivable—and find purpose on the other side of heartbreak. For readers who crave emotionally rich fiction that lingers long after the final page, Providence is a story of one woman’s strength, one family’s resilience, and the grace that waits in the most unexpected places.
Begin Melissa’s journey and rediscover the power of hope.
Award-winning author Jennifer Sienes is college-educated but discovered life experience is the best teacher. She loves Jesus, romance, and writing and puts it all together in inspirational contemporary fiction/romance. Her Apple Hill Series takes place in Northern California, and her Southern fiction Bedford County Series and Norfolk Southern Series are set in Tennessee where she now resides. When she isn’t writing, she works in her garden, refinishes old furniture, and dabbles with home décor.
Providence is the third book in the Apple Hill series. This was a quick read for me and it kept me up late reading it. Melissa Bainbridge feels like she didn't even know her husband after his suicide. She doesn't have time to dwell on it though with children and the bills piling up. So many emotions at work here that Melissa has to process, how could he have done this to her, to them? She doesn't understand and she has so much to process in her mind. Written with full grace and bringing peace and understanding and finally forgiveness . Excellent!
I was given a complimentary copy. Thank you. I received this book from Celebrate Lit for reviewing purposes. All opinions expressed are my own.
Jennifer Sienes, the author of Providence, takes difficult topics and handles them with such grace. Within each chapter of the book she provides viewpoints of different characters of the book. Melissa the mother, her kids, and her employer all are finding their ways to deal with the suicide of Trevor, Melissa's husband. Where this may seem a gruesome topic, Jennifer handles it just right. She goes through the feelings of each one and creates a story that is difficult to put down. As with her other books, Jennifer was able to create another beautiful book. I received this book from Celebrate Lit for reviewing purposes, but all the opinions in this review are my own.
Providence, by Jennifer Sienes, is the third book I’ve read by this author. I love her style, the way she wraps the reader up into the storyline and has me feeling as though I’m living the experience instead of reading about it. She handled a very sensitive topic extremely well, capturing the differing emotions one would feel after discovering this truth about someone you love. The characters are believable and enjoyable. When I see Jennifer Sienes name on a book, I know I want to read it.
With this final installment in the Apple Hill Series, Jennifer Sienes proves once again she can take painfully difficult subjects and craft a beautiful story. I was a little hesitant to read a book about suicide, but that's not what Providence is. Providence is a book full of hope.
As a family struggles to come to terms with the death of Trevor (husband and father), they discover the power of God's love and grace and forgiveness. Jennifer deals masterfully with their unanswered questions, guilt and anger. The reader sees the events from different viewpoints of each of the characters as the story unfolds.
I received an advance copy for review. This review reflects my honest opinion about this book which I highly recommend.
This is such a beautiful story. The characters go through a terrible loss. And if the loss isn't bad enough, there are horrible circumstances surrounding the fatal loss and things they find out afterwards. But in the midst, they feel the love of Jesus and find a way to forgive. After pushing past the hurt and moving into forgiveness, they are blessed with a second chance. I don't want to spoil anything but if you get a chance to read this book and this series, I would highly recommend it. All of the authors book are wonderful, but this one even topped the others in my opinion. I received this copy from Celebrate Lit Publishing, but all opinions are my own.
Jennifer Sienes has written another winner and once again I stayed up half the night because I couldn’t put it down. As with her other books in this series she pulls the reader into the story by giving viewpoints from the various characters, providing the reader with a better perspective and better understanding of what each character is going through. Jennifer is able to describe Melissa's feelings so well that the reader becomes immersed in the character and feels her grief, anger, hurt and confusion right along with Melissa. Be prepared for an emotional ride that is well worth the read! I received this book from Celebrate Lit for reviewing purposes, but the opinions in the review are my own.
As someone who struggles with mental illness, I must admit that I am always a little weary when picking up a Christian novel that tackles the topic. Sadly, all too often there is a lack of awareness and understanding about mental illnesses within the church community. While I certainly believe it has come a long way, there are still many who confuse feelings of anxiousness and depression that we all experience from time to time with clinical depression and anxiety disorders. As such, there is this idea that they can all be overcome with just a little more faith... an idea that is not only wrong... but quite dangerous as well, keeping Christians from seeking out professional help when they feel that faith should be enough. Suicide is perhaps even more taboo... I know I had certainly heard growing up that anyone who took their own life could not go to heaven! As I have learned more about my own mental illnesses and who God truly is and what Jesus' sacrifice meant, I have come again to disagree with that idea wholeheartedly. With all of these misconceptions within the church... again, I was apprehensive not knowing where the author's view would fall.
I very quickly discovered that I had no reason at all to be concerned. This book handled these very difficult topics with grace and understanding that is so very much needed... even addressing these common misconceptions within it's pages as well. Given the topics that it covers, it was far from an easy read, and yet one that I feel was so very important. It really offers a fantastic perspective that I think so many still need to hear. In the end, it was a book filled with hope and grace... and understanding.
This is the third book in the Apple Hill series, but it reads perfectly as a standalone. To be honest, I didn't even realize it was part of a series until I sat down to write this review. That being said, I thought this book was so beautifully written that I immediately downloaded the previous two books to read. It was the first book I had read from the author, but it certainly will NOT be the last.
Many may be hesitant to read a book about suicide, and I get it, it's not easy. Still, I think if you give it a chance you'll see that it is a story about so much more than that, and a story that needed to be told.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
I will start my review off with a warning. This book contains suicide and mental health issues and other subjects that may trigger some. I believe this author has written a story that is at the essence of what many deal with or will deal with. It is never easy to lose someone so unexpectedly. Finding out that the person took their own life spirals a family into such deep emotions and blame that I wanted to be there with them. It will be a hard road to forgiveness but in the end it will draw them closer to God.
Melissa is devastated when her husband dies but it is only the beginning of secrets that she will uncover. How do you explain to your three children that their dad took his own life? Her burden is heavy as she tries to juggle unpaid bills, children who are acting out at home and school and her own guilt ? The author delves deep into the subject of suicide in a way that helps readers understand why someone would think this is the only answer to their pain.
I appreciate the author talking about mental illness because the world has put a stigma on the subject that makes people ashamed to get help or tell anyone they are suffering. Melissa starts to understand that her husband was sick and needed help. But why did he not follow through with doctor appointments or medication? This is where the author delivers a powerful story that stirs within me. I was sad when the children were bullied at school and the words said to them were hard to read. For many the thought of suicide is hard to understand. Within the pages of this story the author demonstrates the controversy of suicide and Heaven. I thought she wrote about this with wisdom and references from the Bible.
I loved how the author reminds us that sin is sin. There is no such thing as one sin being worse than the other. The moments when Melissa and her daughter talk about suicide and heaven are very realistic. The message is good when Melissa explains how God forgives us. That is something she had been dealing with about her husband. It was hard for her to get past her anger to allow God to heal her heart. The story is filled with life lessons that we all need to be reminded of. I loved the ending and how God took a family through grief and showed them unconditional love.
“God doesn’t let go of His children.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
It is hard to separate your experiences from a book you’re reviewing, and yet, isn’t that what pulls us into a good book? Some can relate so well, and others will be educated in something that they have never conceived. Isn’t that the essence of a good book?
When I first began reading Providence, I had wasn’t really sure how much I would be invested in this book. It is told from multiple narratives in a first person perspective. It was a bit jarring at times, but all in all, this is probably the thing I disliked most about it, the rest of the story was beautifully done. Ms. Jennifer Sienes did a raw story of those taboo topics that the church either glosses over, shuns, or paints too rosy a picture. I know, I’ve lived it. Either we are told that there just isn’t enough faith, or we just need to address it with all the natural health remedies, or we need to pray harder like the Patriarchs. No one mentions the fact that modern medicine can be useful, that a steadfast friend is invaluable, and that just maybe, it has nothing to do with our lack of doing anything (albeit faith or any other work of faith), but just that sin messed up the world and we all have something to carry.
This book tells about the family devastation after the death of a husband and father. Told from the perspective of a grieving widow and daughter, and an employer that knows more than is letting on, we get a glimpse of how this death affected so many, including the church community. Its one of those raw and difficult reads, but very very relatable. Our main character, Melissa, takes everything on herself, shares with her intimate friends, but ultimately tries to carry the burden of shame alone and in so doing, our story unfolds.
I love all the questions it brought up about mental illnesses a very relatable way, through conversations, through soul searching, through seeking advice of wiser counsel, by searching the scriptures, and by prayer. This really was a well-done novel!

My Review
I probably wouldn’t have picked this book up if I had realized that it had to do with Suicide. But I am glad i did. This book is not about the suicide itself but the aftermath of what happens to loved ones dealing with it. It was written well and did not feel wierd or depressing. I liked how she tackled this issue without making it feel preachy. The character’s were interesting to get to know. It’s hard to decide who i liked better. They all felt real. My only thing about this is that there was 3 first person character perspectives. That was a little hard to follow sometimes. I liked how this story tackled a tough topic in a redemptive way. I recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“I hope you’re ready, because this is one ride that doesn’t come with a fast pass.”
Providence, the third book in this series by Jennifer Sienes, is another poignant story that had me going through all the ups and downs that the main character, Melissa Bainbridge, was going through. After her husband’s death, she must move forward and start over fairly quickly because she has three children to take care of. She holds feelings of fear and guilt because she feels like she never really knew her husband. She must find forgiveness in order to gain the closure that she’s searching for. With help from her family and friends, she’s able to navigate this really hard situation that was thrown to her all of a sudden.
I really enjoyed how the author approached this hard topic of mental health and suicide. It’s a real life topic that happens more often than you think in today’s society. Those with mental illness are faced with a stigma because they feel like something is wrong with them that can’t be fixed or they feel like there’s no hope to go on. With proper resources and family that truly cares about them, they can get what they need to get through this difficult situation. In Providence, Trevor Bainbridge must’ve felt alone and no one to turn to including his wife. Did Trevor think the pain was too hard to bear that getting help wasn’t worth it? Sometimes that’s something that we just never find out. Jennifer Sienes delivered the topic in such a caring and delicate way. She approached it with such diligence and grace to give the characters hope to move on after a sudden tragedy. The faith elements helped bring the story to fruition in the most delicate way to reveal that God is there for us to give us hope even when we feel like we’re all alone in a difficult situation.
I enjoyed all the characters in this story. It flowed so nicely that I feel like I was their visualizing the story as the events played out. I was feeling all the emotions of the characters. Ms. Sienes delivered another great Christian fiction story. I totally recommend it. I can’t wait to read the next story that she writes. I received a complimentary copy from the author. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review. All opinions stated here are my own.
Providence, the third book in Jennifer Sienes' Apple Hill series. I have not read the other books in the Apple Hill series, and I did not have a hard time following along. I enjoyed this book very much. We are introduced to Melissa and her deceased husband Trevor. Trevor works a lot of long hours and Melissa feels like a single parent a lot of the time. Trevor does not come home one night. This book does deal with the topic of suicide - but the author handles it with grace and tact. The aftermath of Trevor's decisions is what Melissa has to overcome. How will she pay bills? How will she be enough for the children? Will she be able to find a job.
Duncan, Trevor's boss will try and step in and try and help Melissa. He tries to help with the kids and assisting Melissa in finding a job. However, there are so many questions that surround Trevor's death. I love how the author wrote in a powerful message of Jesus and how he forgave us - and how they know they need to forgive wrongs of others that may have attributed to Trevor's death.
This is a quick and easy read - I was able to read it one rainy weekend afternoon. You will be lost in the story as soon as you start and will want to keep reading. Well written characters, intriguing story line - heartbreaking emotional moments. All woven together to craft this amazing story. This is a newer author to me - I have only read one other book by her - but I love the way she writes.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program - all thoughts are my own.
Providence is a wonderful read. I really enjoyed this book and it made me run to Goodreads to make sure I had read everything by this author.
This book is a powerful read. It’s dealing with so many different subjects at once that it’s quite the book. As you read through you can’t seem to stop reading because you have to figure out what comes next. In this book, you’re going to deal with suicide. At first, you think it’s an accidental death on a job site but as you keep reading the truth comes out and it’s so much more than that.
Another issue in the book that you might want to know about is infidelity. But the main part that I want to share is the mental health issue. I’m an RN who has worked on a mental health unit and it’s something that should really get more attention. In this book, you’ll find out someone had bipolar disorder and learn a little bit about it.
I really loved this book. In fact, there isn’t a book by this author that I have read that I didn’t like. She’s amazing and her books are so raw and real that you can’t help but read them straight through.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. Providence, by Jennifer Sienes, is book three in The Apple Hill series. These are stand alone stories that do not need to be read in order. Melissa is dealing with the unexpected death of her husband, Trevor. Thought to be a job site accident, she finds out he had previously lost his job and went there to take his life. Now she is left all alone to raise her children and provide for the family. This is such a good book that focuses on the tender subject of suicide and those who are left behind. There are so many good parts to this story as we see Melissa move through her struggles. We see her family being there to help out, we see Trevor’s former employer standing by her side and helping with home repairs and the children. I enjoyed how Melissa reached out to another mother in need and worked out arrangements for them to blend a household and caring for the children. But, I especially appreciated how the author deals with the topic of suicide in the Bible. Mental health and suicide are not easy topics to talk about and the author has done a fantastic job with this story. The author has done a fantastic job of telling a good story, touching on warning signs etc., without getting preachy about the topic.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story from Celebrate Lit. This is my honest review.
Sad. Dark. Deep. Hopeful. These are just a few words that describe Jennifer Sienes’s novel, Providence. There were many times that I would be reading this book with tears streaming down my face. I felt for Melissa as she dealt with the loss of her husband and my heart broke watching her kids learn to live without their father and accept his death.
I loved that we did not only get to see the story from Duncan’s and Melissa’s points of views, but that Sienes would sometimes switch to Emily’s, Melissa’s daughter. It helped to understand how the kids coped with something as traumatic as their father’s death.
I also loved how much strength that Melissa had. She had a lot of weight on her shoulders, but I felt that she handled it all very well. It wasn’t easy, and it was obvious that Melissa struggled trying to understand what happened, be a single parent and support her kids, and deal with a financial mess. But she never let that bring her down and always picked herself back up, no matter how hard it got.
I will mention some trigger warnings, particularly pertaining to mental health issues. However, I would still highly recommend this novel for anyone who is looking for an emotional, yet hopeful, read.
I had received a copy of this book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.
"Providence" by Jennifer Sienes is a wonderful book. It is book 3 in the series. Each book can be enjoyed as a stand alone.
Yes, this book deals with emotional subjects such as depression and suicide and there is a little bit on sexual abuse and because of these subjects I shed a few tears.
Yes, this book is Fiction, but I think this story happens in "Real Life" So is it really fiction, I say not, just the names have been changed.
This is such a great story exploring the fact that you had to have your our faith and the question of "Can you go to Heaven after committing suicide" ?
This question also makes the reader think "How can you sit in church every Sunday, where forgiveness is preached, and then condemn him for his sins? This was one character talking to another but I took Him out and added others in this spot, yes I make books personal to me.
I was also reminded of my the Bible Verse I have been trying to live by this year, yes it was written into the pages of this story, Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengths me".
I truly recommend this book, and entire series. to any reader who wants a story that is real life and so inspiriting and a reminder that God is with us in everything!
I was given a contemporary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit.
As I began reading this book, I quickly found myself caught up in the story. Melissa and her children find themselves bombarded with one thing after another following the death of her husband. Sometimes, what we believe about people does not represent who they are or what they are going through in reality.
Suicide causes hurt, sadness, and questions for those left behind. Melissa and her children find themselves in that position. It causes questions about God and how He could let these things happen. The faith and eventual trust in God bring this family closer together, along with their family and friends who support them.
The depth of characters and emotions displayed in this book moved to laughter and tears. When I finished reading the book, I wanted to read more about these characters. I felt the author did an excellent job bringing the characters and storyline to life. I definitely believe this book does an excellent job of addressing the emotions and struggles suicide brings. So check out this book for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but it in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
This novel covers some tough subjects as it follows the unfolding events surrounding Melissa Bainbridge’s life while she learns things she wishes she didn’t have to find out about her dead husband. Not only does she have three grieving children to deal with, she needs income and emotional support. One devastating revelation after another cause her to doubt the man she loved and thought she knew. How could he have kept so many secrets and fallen so far? Her struggles push her to take charge of her life and move on since she doesn’t have the luxury of wallowing in grief. The story seems very realistic, and it makes you admire the main character’s perseverance and efforts to care for her children and help others. She offers a good example for readers in how she overcomes with God’s help. Her perspective is not the only one in the book; her teen daughter and her husband’s boss also share their points of view in the story. The author did a commendable job at weaving it all together. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Jennifer Sienes is a wonderful author, I enjoy every book of hers that I read. Providence is the 3rd and final book in the Apple Hill series.
Melissa Bainbridge is trying to figure out how does she move forward after losing her husband, Trevor, to suicide. She has 3 kids and bills are piling up. She is trying to figure out how financial stable she will be. Melissa is also feeling lots of guilt. She lived with her husband for 15yrs and she never knew how extreme his mental health issues were. She reveals many things, but somethings have made more questions in her revelations then answers. What happens when Melissa faces her fears and guilt? Will Melissa ever feel that she can move forward?
Jennifer Sienes takes a really sensitive topic and writes about it with grace. Mental Health issues are a reality of so many in society today and of all ages. There are so many emotions in this book and the reader will be emotional when reading. I truly felt Jesus present in this book, especially for the characters. A REALLY great book!
In this story we come to join Melissa in her journey of loss, hurt and her Faith. Melissa's husband has passed away and has left a baggage of hurt, secrets and confusion for her and her children. The man she loved and known have become a stranger to her now. But she holds to her Faith to come out and be the strength her family needs.
I love how Author Jennifer entwines each character's thoughts about the events going on in a way that you don't get lost or confused in who's talking. The characters become like a friend that you're having a conversation with.
Is a story with a heartbreaking topic but Author Jennifer knows how to wrap it and mold it in a beautiful way with God's love and message for us. You'll be pulled in from the first page and a box of kleenex at some points may be needed.
Providence... A story of finding Strength in yourself and in God's love.
I received an ARC from Celebrate Lit for reviewing but my opinion on my review are my own.
Providence by Jennifer Sienes is a heart-wrenching read. The way this author brings believable characters to life tugs at the heartstrings. Every scene comes alive as if I, the reader has a front row seat to the drama unfolding. I have never been a fan of first-person writing, but this author has a gift for pulling it off. What are often misunderstood and taboo subjects in the church and in society, (mental illness and suicide) Jennifer tackles with such grace and truth. The depth in which she writes this story with hope and God’s love without being preachy will draw you in from the first to the last page. Growing up in a family with mentally ill parents I can attest to the quality of research done, the depth of knowledge, and sensitivity in which Jennifer Sienes tackles this story. Truly authentic. A must read! If you have not placed this on your summertime list, do so immediately. Great job, from a great writer.
I have enjoyed first two books from Jennifer Sienes’s Apple Hill series, Surrendered and Illusions. I was excited to have the opportunity to read book three, Providence. I was far from being disappointed. It is by far my favorite of the three. I instantly felt connected to Melissa right from the start. I understood her pain and heartache. The book was an emotional one for me that made constantly grabbing for the tissues. I had to know what would happen with her and had to keep reading until I find out. Such an amazing read.
I am giving Providence a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean women’s fiction. I will definitely be looking out for more books by Jennifer Sienes in the future.
I received a copy of Providence from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
1) Melissa is recently widowed-and her husband's death wasn't an accident it was suicide. 2) Duncan fired Trevor for having an affair, and dedicates his life to helping the family Trevor left behind, school projects, firewood, providing a job for Melissa. 3) Emily-Melissa's teen- knows about the suicide and spends time at the nursing home where she finds an unlikely friend. 4) mental health, grief, master craftsmanship, forgiveness. 5)Melissa scrambles to hold her family together as life comes crashing around them.
This is an excellent Women's Fiction. Very raw with grief and forgiveness. The characters are real and relatable. This is the first book I've read from this author, but I will definitely read more.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This in no way affected my review. All opinions are my own.
This is the third in a series, but I read it just fine as a stand alone. It was a quick read and I really liked it. The author takes a really touchy subject and handles it with care. Suicide and all it's ramifications is a unique thing for people to work through and it causes a wide range of emotions.
Melissa is feeling all of those emotions and the way the author writes, you feel them right along with her. Oh the many, many emotions and all the people it effects. The author handled it honestly and with great care. It was a really good read and I truly loved the author's writing style.
4/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Providence, the third book in Jennifer Sienes' Apple Hill series was an excellent read. Melissa has three active children and a carpenter husband, Trevor. With Trevor working long hours, Melissa is pretty much a single parent balancing their lives. Then one night Trevor does not come home. Melissa faces challenges about Trevor's death, trying to keep her children in line, and having to balance life without enough money to pay the bills. Duncan, Trevor's boss, helps out, stepping in to work with the kids on their school projects, and trying to help Melissa with some extra money, and finally, a job. But the questions about Trevor's death keep coming and. There are plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. What I thought would happen at the end didn't--I was surprised at the ending. The book is enhanced by stories of Melissa's children and their school and family squabbles. I'd give this more than five stars if I could. This is the third book in the series and I'll read anything Ms. Sienes writes.
Wow, what a powerful story. This deals with some heavy issues, which I have discovered Jennifer is very good at dealing with. This is the third book I have read by her and enjoyed.
How do you find God when your life is falling apart around you. How to you trust in God’s providence when you can’t see Him working?
Melissa has to ask these tough questions and raise three children in the process.
Duncan seems like a really great guy, but doesn’t always make the smartest choices, which add tension to the story.
Overall, a very good read. If you haven’t read anything by Jennifer yet, what are you waiting for?
A copy of this book was given to me by Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Hard topics. Jennifer Sienes deals with them with honesty and compassion. Melissa finds herself as a fairly young widow with three children. This book takes them on a journey of grief and growth. How do you help your children learn to cope with grief and anger, when you are suffering yourself? How do you explain mental illness to them? Melissa, Emily, Josh and Eli find they must rely on God and be willing to ask for help if they are to heal. This is the third book in the Apple Hill series, and while I suggest you read the others, you will not be clueless if you don’t. I received a copy of Providence from Celebrate Lit for reviewing purposes, but the opinions in the review are my own.
The characters in this book were so real to me. I could feel what they were feeling. Providence had me hooked from the very first word. When Melissa’s husband passed away, she had a lot to deal with. Her oldest daughter Emily had a lot to deal with too. I loved having a dog in the story. I enjoyed the scenes where Emily and the dog went to the Senior Center. There is so much to the story I don’t want to any of it away. I recommend reading the book.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit and the author. This book review is my own opinion.
