What happens when life seems to have lost all traces of magic, and the years of youth feel long gone? The author answers this question with a deep, emotional, and mysterious novel, in which the heroine is not 20, but 40 years old. And this may be the most beautiful thing about the book: it reminds us that it’s never too late to find yourself, to live something extraordinary, and to discover who you truly are.
Daciana Lupu is a woman living in the shadow of a painful loss: her husband’s death broke her heart and made her withdraw into herself. She lives in Canada, has a stable job, but feels nothing anymore. That is, until the day of her 40th birthday, when she receives an unexpected gift from her grandmother — a traditional Romanian blouse (ie), hand-embroidered. It doesn’t seem like much… but that blouse opens a gateway to an ancient, magical world, full of mysteries and age-old legends.
With a slow but mesmerizing rhythm, the story takes Daciana back to Romania, where she is sent on a business trip. There, among dark forests, ancestral symbols, and forgotten spirits, she begins a journey of self-discovery. She reconnects with her roots, with Romanian folklore, and with a part of herself she thought was lost.
Daciana is an incredibly human, realistic character — easy to understand and to love. She’s not the classic, perfect, and fearless heroine from the very first page. She is wounded, vulnerable, but it’s precisely this honesty that makes her strong. As the blouse’s mysteries unravel and the truths of the past come to light, Daciana becomes a symbol of rebirth — of the courage to move forward even when you feel lost.
This book is a gem for readers who love a different kind of fantasy — one that blends ancient myths with real, modern emotions. Wolves, forests, magic, and Romanian symbols are described with such care and respect that you feel like you’re part of the story. Everything has a deeper meaning — even the name “Daciana.”
This is not just a fantasy novel — it’s an experience. A tribute to the women who don’t give up, who rebuild themselves, who choose to believe again. It’s a perfect read for quiet evenings, when you want to retreat into a mystical world that speaks directly to your heart.
If you’ve ever dreamed of a story that blends reality with the fantastical, past with present, sorrow with hope — this book is for you. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who believes that real life can begin at any time, at any age.
The book is a fantasy book with a twist that I really enjoyed reading.
First of all, the main character is a woman in her 40’s which is lovely from various reasons. Adventure doesn’t have an expiration date and life is not over after marriage and we should be reminded of this more often.
Daciana is clearly not a hero. She has flaws like all of us and you can see it more than once. I think this is why she won my heart so fast. It reminded me that nobody is perfect and it’s completely normal. The fantasy element is quite different than what we are used to. She brings to life creatures from romanian folklore.
I think the book does wonders for marketing Romania. I felt like I was missing my country even though I live in it. The book gives us so many details about traditions, food, places that if you close your eyed you can imagine being there.
I gave it 4 start because it’s a little slow paced. The action actually starts at the end of the book, leaving me with too many questions unanswered.
What a book. I'm still processing what to say but Wild Howls in the Evergreen is such a beautiful, inspiring and thought provoking read. If you're currently on a journey of self acceptance, this is exactly what you need. Especially if, like me, you have a love for legends and wolves. Thank you Roxana 🖤
I received a digital copy from the author and I am really grateful for the chance to read it. This urban fantasy story follows Daciana, a woman who just turned 40, searching for meaning after the loss of her husband. I loved the idea that life can still surprize you when you least expect it. I related to Daciana: her fears, her strength, and her courage. Her cat was also a sweet and funny addition. I really appreciated the Romanian folklore elements - Călușarii and Ielele. This story also pulled me out of a reading slump thanks to its accessible language and fast pacing, especially in the second part. This said, I did find the beginning a bit slow, I wished Daciana's journey had started sooner. Still, this book made me feel hope. I enjoyed the overall experience. Thank you again, Roxana Raluca Nedelcu, for sharing this story with me!
Wild Howls in the Evergreen - Wolves of Legends Forgotten 6 ⭐
“Wild Howls in the Evergreen - Wolves of Legends Forgotten” is the debut book by author Roxana Raluca Nedelcu. This enchanting tale intertwines fairy tales, fantasy, and ancient myths, but at its heart lies a powerful journey of self-discovery.
The story centers around Deciana, a woman who has recently turned 40 and finds herself grappling with feelings of invisibility. Like many women, she feels that if she were to disappear from her work or life, no one would notice. After losing her partner a few years ago, her sense of worth has diminished, leading her to question her place in the world. However, as we delve into Deciana’s journey, we witness her reclaim her strength and power. This narrative serves as a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late for women of all ages to embrace their inner courage and resilience. We all possess the ability to change our circumstances and cherish the moments that life offers us. It advocates the idea that it is never too late to learn and grow. Through Deciana's experiences, we see that she discovers she will never truly be alone again.
This book struck a chord with me, as I could deeply relate to many of Deciana's struggles and emotions. It made the story feel incredibly real and engaging, and I found myself unable to put it down. The mix of fantasy and folklore is breathtaking, and I particularly loved the exploration of dream interpretation, echoing my own belief that dreams can hold significant meanings. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who might be feeling uncertain about their strength. Remember, we all carry a spirit within us—what would yours be?
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
First of all, I want to thank the author for the opportunity to discover her beautifully woven story!
I got to know Daciana Lupu, a woman who, upon turning 40, receives an unexpected gift from her grandmother — a gift that could shed some light on her past.
The story starts off slowly, with a strong focus on Daciana’s life, her past, and her emotions, allowing you to get to know her better — and I empathized with her from the very first pages. She is a mature, calculated woman, who doesn’t let herself be driven by impulse and doesn’t act until she is sure she has analyzed all possible outcomes of a situation. She has a well-developed sense of discipline, both in her actions and her words.
I greatly appreciated the inclusion of elements from Romanian traditions (such as clothing items and legends), as well as specific Romanian expressions. These reinforced Daciana’s Romanian roots and gave the story a special authenticity.
I was thrilled when I realized the story is told from multiple perspectives — I was really hoping some characters wouldn’t be forgotten, and I loved how their destinies intertwined with Daciana’s.
In the second half of the book, the action picks up speed and several events unfold. From that point on, I could hardly tear myself away from the story. I was ecstatic when some of my suspicions were confirmed and when certain characters managed to build a beautiful friendship — one that I’m personally very curious to see if it will evolve into something more.
I really hope I’ll get to read a second volume too!
(„[...] the White Wolf of Winter called onto the Red Horse of Summer”).
OMG! This book truly touched my heart and resonated deeply with my core being.✨️ It tells the story of Daciana Lupu, a 40-year-old woman living in Canada, with Romanian parents, who uncovers the rich spiritual heritage passed down from her ancestors. It’s a unique book that shines a light on the mystical side of Romanians- their legends and spiritual wisdom - subjects I’ve personally connected with and grown interested in over the years. I don’t believe this book is for everyone; it requires an open mind to fully grasp the messages it conveys. I have great admiration for the author, both for choosing such a meaningful topic and for writing the book in English to share this beautiful aspect of our culture with a wider audience.
Quotes that I loved:
🐺 "Dacians loved wolves because they believed they were the only animal that could not be domesticated."
🌲 "A wolf prefers to die hunger or in battle rather than give up its freedom, and so did the Dacians."
🤍 "Coming home to someone you know and trust and then finding refuge in their arms. It is the best feeling in the world! You've done it all, seen it all, and yet it's still exciting day after day. No fear, no games, no shame, just unconditional love... or maybe I was really lucky."
I would like to thank the Author for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It is a very well written fairy tale. I loved the fact that Daciana is older than most FMC. I read this book during my travels to a funeral. It was the perfect read to escape my reality into a fantasy world. I highly recommend this book to others who appreciate an older FMC in her 40’s not 20’s. I would love to share more about this read but I hate spoilers! Believe me this was a great palette cleanser in between my Dark Romance Reads.
This is a beautiful story about a middle aged women's journey to finding herself and her purpose after losing her soul mate. The writing is done beautifully and touches on some important life points that every single adult woman can relate to. I really loved this story about resilience, empowerment, and growth. This is not a romance but a journey of self-worth and getting up every day, even when that feels hard. I really loved the Romanian folklore intertwined in this story and learned some new things myself. Beautiful job.
A Romanian Fantasy Fiction Interwoven with Culture and Mythology. This book resonated with me in a way I can hardly articulate. It's both stunning and captivating, and although it unfolds at a leisurely pace, I found myself yearning for more with every turn of the page. The story centers around Daciana, a forty-year-old woman from Canada with Romanian roots. Following a heartbreaking experience with her true love, she embarks on a directionless new chapter, merely surviving out of habit. However, her life takes a turn when her job brings her to Romania, alongside a mysterious gift from her long-departed grandmother. As she reconnects with her Romanian roots, Daciana discovers mythical creatures from the realm of fantasy, some kind-hearted, while others are not so friendly, and ultimately finds her life's purpose. Throughout her journey in this unfamiliar land, she is accompanied by her cat, Chocolate, her best friend Annaisha, and Decebal, providing her with the support she needs.
First, I want to highlight that this book may not resonate with everyone. In my view, someone in their twenties might struggle to relate to Daciana's feelings and actions, making her character harder to understand. However, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone willing to open their minds and hearts to truly experience this story.
This is my first fantasy novel infused with Romanian heritage and culture, and I absolutely loved it! The way the author vividly describes every detail immerses you in the history of the narrative. I appreciate how wolves are featured alongside other fantastical creatures, incorporating Romanian mythology into the fabric of the story. Additionally, I enjoyed learning elements of the language, especially through the use of footnotes at the bottom, which Roxana utilized to provide further explanations. I believe more authors should adopt this technique, particularly when introducing complex names. It was incredibly helpful for grasping names and words—a real lifesaver!
Roxana’s writing is masterfully crafted, painting a striking picture of her world-building. When she describes Daciana’s dream, you can truly feel and experience everything, especially the eerie atmosphere surrounding the Strigoi dream. The Romanian landscape that she intricately and effortlessly depicts aligns perfectly with my own vision of Romania, and the images I later encountered confirmed this. You’re not merely reading a story; you are immersed in every emotion and sight that Daciana experiences.
Gaining a deeper understanding of Daciana and her life reveals a captivating character who evokes a strong desire for her happiness. While some aspects of her personality were somewhat frustrating, particularly her tendency to feel superior to others, likely stemming from her age, she ultimately emerged as a relatable figure that many readers could connect with. Annaisha introduced a fresh energy into the narrative, embodying the fun and adventurous friend archetype. Her unwavering loyalty and understanding towards Daciana were heartwarming. Her eagerness to help, along with her passion for Romanian culture and folklore, enriched the story seamlessly. She represented the youthful spirit of women in their twenties, illustrating the mistakes and challenges we often face while navigating the complexities of life. While Daciana reflects the more seasoned, mature aspect of being a woman, shaped by experiences of heartbreak, trauma, and life lessons. Another character who quickly became my favorite was Decebal. Although a secondary character, he played a pivotal role in advancing the plot. I believe that without him, Daciana might have struggled to uncover what she truly needed. His connection to her late husband brought a sense of closeness even after death, aiding her in the grieving process. I particularly enjoyed his presence throughout the book, especially in his relationship and friendship with Annaisha—yes, I would love to see them together! The mythology captivated me, leaving me eager for more with every turn of the page. While there were a few plot holes that I assume may be addressed in the second book, I truly enjoyed the bear mythology, the strigoi (vampire in Romanian), the dancing woman (iele), and of course, the wolves. These wolves stand out as unique compared to those in other books, showcasing a richer cultural aspect. The mythology woven throughout this narrative created such a beautiful and eerie atmosphere. This story is a truly beautiful narrative, and I feel incredibly grateful to have had the chance to read it. If you're looking for something unique, I highly recommend it, especially if you have a passion for culture, mythology, and Romanian lore intricately woven into your books. This one is definitely a must-read.
Book review “Wild howls in the Evergreen: Wolves of Legends Forgotten” by Roxana Raluca Nedelcu 💙🐺
Rating: 5⭐️
Firstly, I want to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book. It was such a beautiful journey and a book full of lessons of life and even I am Romanian, I learned a lot of things of my folklore. I have known the stories of Ielele, Călușari, Strigoi, Dacia Empire but now I have more knowledge about them and I am glad I learned about the significance of wolf’s power and their symbol for Dacia.
This is an urban fantasy book, in which we follow Daciana’s daily life in Canada and how she confronts people for her justice, how she take auto defense classes and how she befriends Annaisha. They both end up in Romania, for jobs, and their friendship blossom.
Before leaving Canada, Daciana receives a package from her parents and a ie (traditional Romanian blouse) from her grandmother. In Romania she learns more about the symbols from the ie and she discovers a lot of secrets about her roots from Codruța Grandma’s letter. She goes through a journey on the mountain until she meet her wolves, her true family.
One more thing I loved from this story besides the folkloric elements, are her dreams. She had a lot of dreams about her being a wolf or being in more critical situations with different creatures. I really love how well they were written and I lived for all of the vibes from this book. The eerie atmosphere of this book, the characters (Annaisha and Decebal have my heart), the hidden connections.
I really recommend this story to fantasy lovers who want to know more about Romania’s folklore. 🐺❄️✨
“Many people come and go in and out of your life. Some stick around until they get what they want from you. Others, even when you think they’re your friends for a while, will forget you when it’s no longer easy to see you at school, at work or in the neighbourhood".
Wild Howls in the Evergreen: Wolves of Legends Forgotten by Roxana Raluca Nedelcu
This independent debut swept me into a story rich with Romanian folklore, magic, and the untamed call of destiny. What stood out most for me was the fresh perspective of the FMC—a 40-year-old woman at the center of the tale. As one line beautifully states: “40 is the age of freedom…when they have stability at home and are no longer afraid to be themselves.” I don’t often see this age represented in fantasy, and it brought a grounding wisdom to the character’s journey.
At its heart, this is a story about love, friendship, duty, and defying expectations, all set against a backdrop of legends long forgotten. The pacing was a bit uneven for me—slower in the beginning, then racing at the end—but that final surge built real momentum and left me wishing the rhythm had been more balanced throughout.
The conclusion felt both satisfying and open-ended, leaving plenty of room for the reader to imagine what might come next.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this book all opinions expressed on my own.
Disclosure: I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review. As someone who loves supporting indie authors, I always aim to share thoughtful, fair feedback. While I have personal reading preferences like a love for fantasy, horses, or specific tropes, I never let that impact my rating unless it is relevant to the book’s intent or audience. I review with the genre and readership in mind.
What starts as a quiet and reflective slice-of-life story slowly grows into something much deeper, layered with emotion, mystery, and culture.
The main character is such a breath of fresh air. She is in her late thirties, thoughtful, and incredibly grounded. Her perspective is full of emotional depth and quiet strength. I loved how self-aware she is and how much care she takes in her daily life. It was refreshing to read a character who thinks, plans, and reflects rather than simply reacting to things. Her inner monologue is powerful and often relatable.
There are characters and situations throughout the book that really struck a chord with me. Some are difficult, others warm and comforting, and many felt like echoes of real-life experiences. I found myself thinking about my own life while reading, which made the connection to the story even stronger.
Around the halfway point, the setting shifts and becomes richly immersive. The cultural depth is remarkable. From food to language to everyday details, the book gives a vivid and respectful look into Romanian life. It felt real, almost like nonfiction at times, but still beautifully written and emotionally driven.
As the story unfolds further, it takes on a mysterious and almost mythic tone. The final section blends emotional resolution with a touch of the fantastical in a way that reminded me of classic generational or folklore-inspired fiction. It was unexpected but deeply satisfying, full of atmosphere and symbolism.
This is the kind of book I think older readers will appreciate the most. It speaks to those who feel stuck or weary of surface-level living. It offers something raw and real, but also something hopeful and soul-filling. I closed the book with emotion in my chest and a quiet wish that Chocolate is taken care of and has the best naps of his life.
Wild howls in the Evergreen is a mesmerizing and magical read, about a strong woman and her endless searching for her trueself.
It surpasses everything I have read so far. And I’m not saying this just because the author is romanian, like myself, but mostly, because she has a great talent at telling her story.
She takes the reader on the journey of her character, too.
The story embodies all the elements of a great book : myhths, shapeshifters, romance and fantasy.
The story revolves around Daciana, a strong willed woman, with romanian heritage who once turned 40, her life will convey a new meaning and purpose. One that she does not expect, though.
This new life of her, will bring her long lost love and also her grandmother, back into her life. Out heroine will face many challenges until the moment arrives.
A discovery which bewilders her and also entices her.
I am not sure if this book could be considered a typical fantasy, so I will leave here my opinion about the actual genre. The first half of the book could be easily a contemporary fiction, with some elements of magical realism. As Daciana arrives in Romania things start to change in a continous form and the story goes in a different direction. I felt like it started to become a fantasy in the second half with Romanian myths and traditions included at every step.
Moving on, it was a real pleasure to meet Daciana, a forty year old woman who is currently trying to move on from a tragic event, the lost of someone she loved with her whole heart. I felt like I understood Daciana more in her hard moments than Annaisha who is closer to my age. I guess I am an old soul myself.
I think I found out some new myths and Romanian stories in this book which are not very popular nowadays. I loved how they appeared in Daciana’s way.
Even though the book includes more description than I usually enjoy, it was written in a beautiful, clear and easy to follow style.
I recommend this book to every reader who can appreciate a unique story, but especially to those who are interested in Romanian traditions or mythology!
P.S.: I forgot to mention that Daciana is a real bookworm, just like me (I loved her birthday gift).
I'm so glad I ran across this book! It's an interesting read that combines reality with fantasy. Thru the mystical journey, the author teaches you a little about astrology, Romanian legends and folklore, and also mixes in some interesting facts about wolves. This is a book that the whole family can enjoy!
Have you ever tried Cozonac? After reading the book, now I am curious and want to try some!
A favorite quote from author about the book: "With love (because, if there's one thing this world never has too much of, that thing is love) ❤️
The main character in Wild Howls in the Evergreen is in her 40s, and it’s so refreshing to see a strong, adventurous woman at that stage of life. It's not often we get to follow someone with real-world experience and wisdom, but she's got that perfect balance of determination and vulnerability. Even though the story has a fantasy element, her journey feels grounded in reality, which kept me hooked.
I absolutely loved this book! Most fantasies have younger main characters but this is with an FMC who is turning 40 and finding her path. Love how it shows it's never too late, no matter the age. Great character growth, it's so easy to get sucked into the story. Highly recommend!
I received this book as an ARC from the author. And let me tell you, this book is amazing and so is its author! 🤩
We have our FMC Daciana Lupu, a 40 year old woman with Romanian heritage that goes through a personal journey. And it is so great how Roxana weaved fantasy, mythology and real life all together. Daciana is a very likeable and realistic character, she has a great sense of humor and i felt throughout the book that I could have been friends with her. She’s the kind of person that gives you a safe space to be yourself.
This book made me proud of my Romanian heritage and I didn’t want the story to end. I loved it from start to finish! 🤍
Thank you, Roxana, for the ARC and for the beautiful story! 🙏🏼
"Wild Howls in the Evergreen: Wolves of Legends Forgotten" by Roxana Raluca Nedelcu is a cozy fantasy with lots of references to Romanian folklore. It's for sure a cozy fantasy because though there is some mentions of domestic abuse and violence, it's on the milder side and doesn't get graphic.
I really enjoyed the references to Romanian folklore. I knew a little bit from my own European/Asian Folklore studies. It was fun to see it in a book. I hope there will be another book. I think it would interesting to see more of Annaisha's story too. That fox dream and her connection with Daciana makes me feel like she wont just accept being left to care for the cat without more answers or a secret up her own sleeve.
This one was hard for me. I can appreciate the world the author was trying to build, however I think the pacing was just a bit too slow for me. I felt like I had to push myself to pick it up a number of times which is not how I usually am with books.
Something I really loved about this book though was that the FMC was 40 years old. It was nice to have a more mature lead. I do feel that some of the early descriptions were so detailed, that when I got to later in the book and we were reaching the big pivotal stuff, the descriptions felt far less detailed. I had a few moments where I went back because I thought I had missed something.
I wouldn’t call this a very high fantasy book. The only real fantasy element was the wolf shifters. I was also a bit confused about who they were at war against and why, a bit more explanation there I personally think would have helped.
All in all it was an intriguing story, but I think maybe it just wasn’t for me. Not the typical story I would gravitate towards. I typically do enjoy somewhat more fast paced stories. But perhaps it’s perfect for someone else.
Some books feel like they were written with a whisper — like a secret meant only for those who are truly paying attention. Wild Howls in the Evergreen is one of those books. At first, it reads like a quiet story about a girl finding herself… until you start to realize that nothing is as simple as it seems.
Clues are scattered throughout — in letters, in dreams, in things that might seem ordinary at first glance. But the deeper you go, the more you notice: every detail matters. Everything is connected. It’s the kind of story where symbols speak louder than words — if you’re willing to listen.
This is a tale woven with love — not just romance, but also the kind of love that spans generations. The love of a grandmother’s voice. The pull of blood and roots. The ache of a homeland you’ve never truly known, but that somehow knows you.
What I loved most were the dreams — that dreamy in-between place where fantasy and memory blur together. Each one feels like a portal, not just to another world, but to a deeper truth. There’s a haunting beauty to them, like you’re touching something sacred and forgotten.
If you love stories that feel ancient and modern all at once… where mythology and reality twist together like a braid… where you have to pay attention to the softest threads to find the true story underneath — this book is for you.
Because sometimes, the real magic is hidden in plain sight — you just have to be willing to look twice.
Wild Howls in the Evergreen is the kind of book I didn’t realize I was craving until I fell into it. Nedelcu weaves a slow, rich urban fantasy that leans into Romanian folklore and the quiet, personal magic of life later in life.
Daciana’s story was honestly so rewarding to experience. I can’t tell you how refreshing it was to have a protagonist who is forty, who’s lived, made mistakes, grown tired, and learned to choose her battles. She’s not out to save the world—she’s out to honor herself, her past, and the small corner of the world she can still shape. That focus on personal stakes over grand, earth-shattering ones made this feel cozy and deeply meaningful.
I devoured this book in one sitting. The Romanian folklore and culture stitched through the story gave it an earthy, ancient texture that I absolutely adored. But more than that, it feels genuine—like the author poured herself into it, weaving life lessons about aging, healing, and quiet strength.
This isn’t an action-packed fantasy; it’s a soul-soothing one. It’s the kind of story you read with a blanket, a cup of tea, and the quiet conviction that life’s best adventures don’t end at twenty—or even thirty. I’m so glad I picked this up. It felt like a gift.
