Rate this book
Bestselling cartoonist Adrian Raeside delivers a hilarious celebration of Canada’s quirks, strengths, and independent spirit.

Looking for a reminder of why Canada is the best place to call home? This tongue-in-cheek guide offers plenty of reasons why the True North stands strong and free. Our healthcare isn’t tied to our jobs. Our elections last six weeks—not an eternity. Our beer is stronger, our landscapes wilder, and—let’s not forget—Donald Trump doesn’t live here, eh?

Touching on wilderness survival, civics lessons and everything in between, The Canada Handbook is packed with sharp observations and laugh-out-loud cartoons that celebrate what makes this country uniquely Canadian. Whether you’re a newcomer or a lifelong Canuck, Adrian Raeside’s witty take on life north of the 49th parallel is sure to make you chuckle—and maybe even feel a little prouder to be Canadian.

I live very near the Canadian border with the United States, and I travel up to the Vancouver, BC area fairly frequently (even more so since the Orange Despot took office). I also follow a lot of Canadian media to get the "real story" in an age when US media outlets are timid (at best) in their approach to covering the political situation in my own country.

On a recent trip to Surrey, BC I couldn't resist picking up this cartoon take on what makes Canada different from the US. I'd never heard of Adrian Raeside before, but apparently he's well known locally in British Columbia, and his classic editorial cartoonist style appealed to me right away. The Canada Handbook was published recently enough that it is full of references to the complete human failure currently occupying the Oval Office, and Raeside's ready wit reveals the many shortcomings of the US without descending into bitterness. He doesn't depict Canada as a perfect country, but rather one where honest disagreements don't have to devolve into adolescent squabbles without end.

So if you're a US resident, and even if you're not in a position to visit a functional democracy anytime soon, The Canada Handbook will at least give you a few laughs, and that's a pretty great gift at this particular time in our history.
