Avery #1

Spark of Light

Rate this book
Nearly a century ago the world was decimated by a magical war. In their defeat, elves were captured by humans, cut off from their magic, and broken down into lifeless, drone-like slaves.

Avery is different. Somehow, her magic has always simmered beneath the surface. Never completely broken, she must pretend in order to survive. When Zander, her master’s nephew, brings her magic out in full force, she finds out what it’s like to truly be alive.

Ripped from Zander’s side and sent to The Farm, Avery doesn’t know if she’ll be able to hide her light and make it out alive. But there, she’ll meet someone who knows her true purpose.

The war isn’t over, and if Avery can survive, she could be the one to set her people free. All it takes is a little hope and a Spark of Light.

BETA READ BITCHES!! (that was probably inappropriate and gloaty; oh well)

I can't....even....you guys.... THIS. This was fantastic. Amazing. Sucked me in and didn't let me go. I always wonder what it is about certain books/series that just seem to be a cut above the rest for me. I mean, yeah, the writing is spectacular. But I do read a lot of spectacularly written books. So why does this one have me so over the moon? It just seemed to have all of the elements that make up a LENORE story, you know? I mean, as readers, we all have those buttons that, when pushed, light us up like a Christmas tree. And this book had my buttons.

Button #1 (and most important for me): GREAT CHARACTERS. Not only were they so fabulously fleshed out that I felt they were real, but they were my kind of people. Well, the good ones. Heck, even the BAD GUYS in this book were button pushers....just, in a bad way or something. All of the characters, good and bad, were realistic and believable (well, sometimes Dextra was a bit of a caricature, but I kind of liked having that one person I could hate with impunity). It actually made it hard to read at times, b/c they would have these realistic reactions and I would just want to smack them; but when I sat down and thought about it, if I were to actually think about their whole history and what was happening to them, I couldn't see them reacting any other way you know? I know. This is all so vague. But when you read it, you'll totally understand. I'm talking Oliver, the shades of gray bad "ish" guy who made you feel so much more about him than you expected. I'm talking Delilah, with her grief and anger. And most of all I'm talking Avery.... :(

OK, enough with the vague. Pushing all the "angsty" (not that angsty, but you know what I mean) stuff aside, Avery was frickin HILARIOUS. Seriously. She had me snorting all over the place with her thoughts and reactions to things. I would high five that girl all over the place, she was soooo feisty. And she was wonderfully conflicted -- strong, but cautious. And OMG Zander. *sigh* *swoon* He's not your typical hero AT ALL. He *almost* has a beta thing going for him. He's definitely not an alpha. But he's so sweet, and sensitive, and freaking sexy, and inquisitive, and kind. Oh, he has his faults, but meh....I'll take him.

Button #2 (side b/c it's kind of related to characters): CHEMISTRY. Avery and Zander have it by the bucketloads....seriously.

Button #3: WORLD BUILDING. This was such a strange book to categorize. I mean, Avery is an elf. And elves always conjure up fantasy to me. But it felt a bit more like the paranormal novels that are popular right now. But most importantly, it had a dystopian feel. Going into this book I did not expect the world to be our *own* but sometime down the future. And I really enjoyed that. I could totally follow how this world came to be. It felt real to me....might have to go look for pointy ears now.

I'm sure I have other buttons, but those are my major ones. And really, I've blabbered on long enough. Can't wait til this is out so I can share my fandom with others....:)

This book was really quite clever. I couldn't predict what was gonna happen and that alone is enough to keep my eye on this author. This writer has a sexy side that I totally dig. It wasn't smutty but it was intense. I was startled with her ability to transition from the light aspects to the dark ones. It reminded me a little of Tara Brown. I enjoyed how the magic was woven as instinctual and not something learned.

This one was a delightful breath of fresh air in a crowded elevator filled with old men. Just captivating. Finished in a a few hours.

The characters:
Avery is the Bomb! Her ability to take what is thrown at her and still think of everyone else is quite selfless and honorable.
Zander was imperfectly flawless, while a little clumsy with the sneaking around I perceived it as passionate and unafraid. And the twist at the end! Holy crap! I had no idea.
Delilah is my favorite. I don't know why I always like the support characters the most. But she had a serious chip on her shoulder to get over and I hope the meaning of her name doesn't come back to bite them in the ass later.
Oliver, oh Oliver! I had such high hopes for you. nuff said on that.

I will be telling my friends about this book. I have a lot of reader friends.... and family..... and random strangers I sit on the subway train next too.

I simply adored this book. I will try to write this as professionally and un-spoilery as possible, but forgive me in advance if I get a little fangirly. I was drawn in from the first page, and I was hooked until the very end. I read this book within a day, and I was irritated by the fact that I had to do things that weren't read this book, like go to class and study.

I'll start with how much I really liked this concept. This book does something that I personally haven't encountered before- it combines the genres of high fantasy and dystopia. When I saw that this book included both a strange future America post-war setting and a race of enslaved elves, I knew I had to have it. These two genres are among my top favorites to read, and when you mix that idea with young adult and a dash of romance, it becomes the perfect match for me.

The characters were also a huge part of what made this novel so enjoyable. The main character, Avery, is a determined and rebellious elf-slave who is strong and independent despite her love interest, Zander. I loved watching both of these characters grow as a couple, as well as on their own throughout the course of the book. I also really liked that their romance is a bit steamy and risque than I anticipated, without being too explicit. Almost more importantly than the characters I loved are the ones I hated. Tuttle managed to make me hate characters but not because they were poorly written, but just the opposite. They were so detailed and so rotten that I became all the more invested in the story line because I hoped that they'd get what they had coming to them.

The world building is another thing that stood out to me in this book. I really liked the detail put into the book. Whether the characters were on the Ruler's estate, at the food lot, or at The Farm (the worst possible place an elf can go), I felt like I was actually there, and I was never lost or confused by what was happening, thanks to each vivid detail being included in the text.

This book's pacing is really steady and intense. It covers quite a decent amount of time, but it's done with well written elapses. It moves pretty fast thanks to the nonstop action and plot twists and the tremendously overwhelming amount of feelings I experienced at the hands of this book. I will say that some of these twists are predictable at times, but honestly I'd get swept up in some other plot line with such intensity that I'd forget that I'd predicted it at all, which helped to keep it surprising and exciting to read.

Spark of Light is one of the best books that I have read this year. It is a high speed fantastical dystopian that follows a forbidden romance between an elf slave and a human, and how they can work together to start a new revolution to make a better existence for both races. This is a mature YA read- there are some steamy but not explicit sex scenes and situations involving rape and violence, so reader beware. I'd recommend this to anyone who is a fan of dystopian and fantasy novels because this book is, in my humble opinion, a great blend of both genres. This is a book that you won't want to put down, and you'll curse to yourself when you find that you're out of pages. (I know I did.)

Thanks so much to the author/IFB Tours for my copy of this book in exchange for my 100% honest review. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose.

I loved this book. Fantasy, suspense, love, magic, elves, rebellion, Spark of Light just had it all. The main character Avery is a girl I could get behind. She is different despite her best efforts to be like all the other elves. The spark within her cannot be ignored.

This book starts off before anything happens. This book takes place about a century after the war between elves and humans. Elves can no longer do magic, they don’t even know it exists. We get a good look at how Avery lives day to day and how she is expected to interact with human. I loved that this introduction to Avery is her in her everyday life. It is far away from boring.

Avery has a good relationship with the human girl Delilah and spends lots of time with her. It is a secret friendship she has hidden for years. Delilah lives with her Aunt and Uncle on a farm. The elves are the slaves there. Delilah comes back from a visit with her parents and suddenly she wants nothing to do with the elf Avery. Zander, Delilahs brother, befriends Avery in Delilah’s absence. The relationship between Avery and Zander leads into a slow burn sort of love that included lots of magic. When Avery and Zander are discovered Avery is sent to the farm. Elves that go there don’t come back the same. Avery must use her spark to help free her people and save herself.

So this is a sort of dystopian fantasy. I adore dystopian books so this was right up my alley. There is so much to love about a character like Avery who is a bit rebellious, and very different from those around her. She doesn’t even realize what makes her different until Zander starts to share his knowledge with her. We learn about Avery’s spark and the truth of the elves right along with Avery. This a swoon worthy romance. I really adored Zander and his commitment to Avery, and to his sister. Avery starts to wake people up without meaning to which leads to her friendship with Oliver. This is not a love triangle, but more of a one sided want on Oliver’s side. Avery runs into Oliver, and gets him into trouble. I ended up feeling bad for Oliver, but who couldn’t love a girl like Avery. What Avery learns to do is pretty amazing.

There is so much more that happens in this story, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. This was a really good high fantasy. I am really looking forward to the sequel I don’t know when that is coming out, just know I am reading it!

I received this AMAZING book in exchange for an honest review!!

I loved this book, seriously, LOVED IT! I started it and finished it in a day. I don't usually do that, I do have a life...not that day!! I read, read some more..and finished it!

From the first page I was hooked...might have even been the first paragraph. Elizabeth wrote this book in a way that just captured your heart and soul and swept you away with the characters and the story. She had me falling in love with these main characters right from the very mention of them...she did a great job building their characters and making you really feel for them.

Her storyline was fantastic, imaginative and exciting. The drama was intense, the love was intense..I was emotionally invested through the whole story.

I love that Avery is a strong willed girl..yet she has that vulnerable side. Makes you connect with her that much more.

I fully recommend giving this book a try.

I love this novel. It has everything that I look for in a good book, a great lead character, a gripping story and another book boyfriend to add to my list.
The story developed well and immediately had me hooked. Avery is a strong person with whom I felt an instant connection. Zander is a constant in her life who loves and supports her.
Please Elizabeth hurry along with the next one, I need to know what happens!!
A brilliant start to this series and I cannot wait for the next.
Well done Elizabeth!!!

I have never in my life seen an author break tense so often. One sentence is present tense, the next is past tense, the next is a combination of both because it changes halfway through. The world is never really explained - it took me a good long while to figure out that humans were keeping elves as slaves and no, there is no explanation as to why. We're just supposed to read about these elves eating dumpster scraps and getting whipped for making noise and understand what's happening and why without any sort of context. Sorry, I guess I'm just not that good at reading.

A new author crossed my desk recently, and I had a chance to read an advance copy of her new novel Spark of Light. This newest story immediately spins us into the future of earth where we discover that the final apocalyptic event was not mankind turning on themselves in one last nuclear holocaust. Rather it was between man and the previously hidden elf population of the earth. It is during the times after this war that this is a poignant story of friendship, love and discovery, is set in a world that mankind had defeated and enslaved the elves of earth.

Told in the first person viewpoint of a young elf girl, Ms. Tuttle masterfully draws you in. Together, with Avery, you walk through her daily life as she discovers what it is to really live and in the process discovers what it is to love and be loved.

A quiet story on a sub-level slowly rises to the surface, as Spark of Light speaks of humanity and our treatment of people, no matter who they are, no matter their status in life. Spark of Light also speaks deeply to the fact that we all need to love and be loved. The novel is masterfully told, but to have discovered the added depth, caused this reader to go back for a second reading so I could savor the fare.

A talented author can be schooled in the art of writing a book. But storytelling is a gift that cannot be learned, only sharpened and polished with practice. In my opinion, Elizabeth Tuttle has a gift of storytelling. It will be a delight to read the remaining chapters of this tale as they are published.

Wow! I don't even know what praises to begin with! I was immediately taken hostage by the fantastic life of this story. I'm on tour with the book and I get so many chances to read wonderful stories like this one! But this....it really blew my out of the water!

The characters were just fantastic! Beautiful created and amazingly descriptive, and yes the bad guys to, you have to have some bad guys or you just don't have a story. I'm not going to get real descriptive here because I want you, the readers to discover the greatness yourself!

I just want add the writing of this book was so lovely and fantastic!

So the story line, you can pretty much learn all of this in the synopsis but anyways, there was a magical war, the elves were defeated and captured. Forced to live without their magic. They were broken. They were nothing more than mind-less slaves.

We have Avery, she is beautifully different, she can feel her magic just beneath the surface, begging to be let out, begging to shine through. You've heard the saying, fake it until you make it? That's how Avery lives.

She then meets Zander, her master's nephew. He somehow brings the magic in her out and she can finally let go, be free. The most amazing feeling in her miserable world.

But nothing good lasts forever, she is yanked from Zander and sent to a farm. She's unsure if she can hide her light or even make it out alive. She meets someone there who has of her true purpose.

The war isn't over, can she have enough hope and light to make it alive and set her people free?

*~PLEASE! GREAT YOURSELF TO THIS AMAZING READ!~*

This book was gifted to me in exchange for a fair review.

The Spark of Light by Elizabeth Tuttle was my first ever book with elves, unless Santa was present with them.
This book grabbed me in the first couple of paragraphs, and I normally don't read the genre. This is saying a lot for me, I normally don't read any fantasy or paranormal, EVER! With this reading challenge, I'm hoping to broaden my reading horizon. Spark of Light did just that for me.

Tuttle gave this book suspense and a sexy vibe, that kept me turning pages. I found myself almost forgetting I was reading fantasy. It seemed so much like new adult / romantic suspense at times, I got lost in this wonderful tale Avery. Avery Knew she was different but she couldn't figure out why. She is an elf with magic but she really didn't understand her true powers. She has a will not to be broken by the guards and masters. She manages to hold on and not be completely broken, when her master's nephew comes to live with them, he brings her magic to the surface. She can no longer pretend and everyone sees.

The characters in this book intrigued me, I devoured them. Tuttle has such great character development and her storyline was superb, I felt like I was right there in the story with Avery and Zander (master's nephew) spying on their forbidden romance. Catching their stolen moments together.

I really enjoyed this book and maybe just maybe, I might have to start giving the Fantasy genre a try. Trust me, don't ever say that you WILL NOT read a certain genre because a really good author like Tuttle will come along and prove you wrong.

Spark of Light by Elizabeth Tuttle receives 4 stars

Okay, first...there is some sex in this. I didn't think it was really that sensual, etc. But I like to put that out there, because some people don't read books with sex in it. I actually do not usually, either, but I didn't realize there was any until after I read it.
Moving on:
This was a GREAT book! I love the whole idea of it. Anyone that reads my blog knows I LOVE a strong heroine, and being beaten every day of her life by a horrible woman will either break you or make you stronger. This made Avery stronger. She is part of a race of elves who are forced into slavery. Somehow they are no longer magical (or are they?), and are forced to eat the humans leftovers in a garbage pile everyday.
Horrifying.
So, I cried throughout this book. I don't know why, I am not usually so emotional, but I think Elizabeth really just captures the pain and emotion of the situation when Avery is beaten.
However, it is not all tears, there is adventure and love. The amazing Zander, he's unique in his own way, and he is totally captured by Avery. Then there is Oliver who doesn't stand a chance, until they get to the farm where we see just how desperate he is.
Oh...the Farm...what horrendous place.
At the farm we really get some history and a better idea of what has been going on and what is going on in this world. This is a GREAT start to what I think will be an amazing series! Read it! You will NOT regret it!

I've been hearing so many good things about this book a lot, so I picked it up last December. So when the Razzlefraternizer Reviewers voted on it for a February read, I was excited to have an excuse to read it.

The beginning started out a bit confusing for me, but picked up pretty quickly.

Warning: This book has A LOT of drama. There were a few times I had to put it down so I could catch my breath. Especially in the beginning, when I was still figuring everything out. There were also times the story was too rushed, especially in certain dramatic scenes.

While drama is something I'm quite fond of, I'm definitely an emotional reader, there were times where it was just too much. One example being that something happened one way, and then happened right afterwards another way. It milked the hell out of that situation, and I just wanted to smack the characters involved.

Trigger warning: I will admit that I skipped a scene. I was warned about it, knew what occurred in it, but it wasn't a situation that I felt comfortable reading at the time.

Avery was an impressive lead, and Zander compliments her well. I really enjoyed this story and I cannot wait for the sequel.

I'm not sure exactly what to say here, so bear with me and my waffling and pretend its a real review.

I should start by saying that I'm sitting here with a wicked grin on my face which means I obviously quite enjoyed this book. I'll be hunting down the next books in the series and hassling the author if they're not out yet!

I spent most of the book loathing several characters and hoping that they get their just desserts. And in my book if a book evokes any emotion from you, than its a good one. And boy was this a goodie.

Elves, what more can I say!! But suppressed elves that live as slaves :(. This is a different take on the normal breed that are mighty and live in the forests. These elves are all but dead on the inside. All except Avery, shes never been quite able to fit in. She gets all the wrong kind of attention from her masters and more than plenty of beatings as a result.

This book is about the discovery self and worldwise that Avery goes through. About learning to have hope when it seems like there couldn't possibly be any.

Oh and there is magic, which is always awesome!!! I can't wait to find out what happens next!!

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

I am not going to lie, the opening scene was a little rough for me to handle. I was almost walked away from the book but my inner voice told me to keep reading. So glad that I listened. I loved Avery from the start, there were times where I wanted to hug and protect her, especially from Dextra.

Ms. Tuttle, if you read this please know that you have gained a fan for life.

Despite there being a couple of scenes that were uncomfortable for me, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It had wonderful characters, a beautifully executed plot, and it makes me want to continue reading the series. The way Tuttle writes will draw you into the story and will make you want to take down the bad guys and in some cases the bad ladies.

I will definitely recommend this book to others. I give this story 5/5 Platypires.

This book was an absolute MUST READ! First the story was so original, the characters were truly memorizing, and a great few evil characters you have to hate! I felt the characters pain and triumphs Elizabeth Tuttle brought this story to life. I found myself rereading parts of the books because it was so darn AMAZING.
Avery was born a elf which means she was born a slave. Even though she has an unbearable life she finds refuge in a human girl that comes to visit her masters ranch every summer. She does what she is told in hopes the beatings from the masters wife will be less harsh. Avery falls for Zander her only friend's brother and learns that love has risks that she may be willing to die for.
Avery discovers she has magic and there may be more to her then meets the eye.

***I received this book in exchange for an honest review.***

I like that this was a different take on the apocalypse theme. Normally, books that talk about the apocalypse or talk about dystopian worlds are focused solely on a world made up of only humans. I liked that this involved magical creatures, even though we only saw one kind in this book.

One thing that sort of bugged me was the recklessness of Zander. He wasn't really the kind of person to think things through, and I grew angry at him a few times because of how he puts Avery in danger. That is more of a personal dislike though, and it didn't really affect how I liked the book overall.

Although, what did affect this review is the rushed ending. I would have liked to see it a little more detailed and drawn out, so it wouldn't feel like everything just happens rapidly to finish the book. At some points towards the end I felt like the characters experienced slight personality changes. They weren't big, but they were noticeable because I feel that there wasn't much character buildup/growth for them to show the changes they did.

I wish that we could have found out what exactly happened to Oliver at the FARM. We only know it's not good, but no details were really provided there. I hope we get to find out in the second book.

Other than those issues, this book flowed really well and I sympathized with Avery for the abuse she experiences throughout the story. The supporting characters moved the story along and didn't feel like characters that were just there.

I award Spark of Light 4 Platypires!

**A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

When it comes to paranormal creatures, I have a definite soft spot for elves. They're among my favorites, so when I saw that single word in the synopsis for Spark of Light, that's all I needed to see to know I wanted to read it. It's a mix of what I'd call semi-post-apocalyptic fiction blended with the supernatural. It doesn't quite fit into what I'd normally think of as true post-apocalyptic, but rather it was described more as a magical war between humans and elves, so it still fits. There are scenes that were definitely difficult to read, but it's the characters themselves that kept me going.

Avery is different, and it becomes apparent that she's not a hollow husk like the other elven slaves around her are, who simply go through the motions because they're ignorant of their true potential. They're kept in the dark about a lot of things as a way to keep them under control. With everything that happened to her, it was impossible not to feel a lot of empathy for Avery, and I noticed she came out stronger in the end in spite of it. When Zander walks into her life, everything changes, and I really liked him as well. His uncle, Gerik, is the head of the region. By the end of Spark of Light, I had grown to like him too, along as Delilah. In contrast, there's Dextra. There were numerous times I wanted to slap her simply on principle. One of the other secondary characters I liked quite a bit was Semara, another elf.

I liked the book, and I'll give it a 4/5 Platypire rating.

First of all, I was gifted this book and just felt compelled to read it because the blurb sounded so exciting (despite the fact that I rarely read books that are dystopian, magical or deal with elves?) and I am so glad that I did.
I love a strong, fearless heroine and Avery was just that...an elf slave in a society that just seemed to be too cruel to imagine anyone surviving in it...and yet she does.
There are magic and mythical creatures yes...but also a wonderful love story, great fantastical world building, sizzling sexual chemistry (between Avery and Zander) and so many complex characters (some you will love and some you will despise). I am always in awe of fantasy/dystopian writers because they have to create a world that is so amazingly unreal yet must make it believeable to the reader (or we won't buy the story and characters) and Elizabeth Tuttle does just that with this engrossing and at times, very hard to read book. (I can just take so much cruelty towards another being before I get too upset and want to stop reading).
If you love fantasy, are not afraid of some sensuality, abuse and high adventure, then give this one a try. Enough angsty romance for lovers of that genre and full of enough mythical magic to appeal to readers of paranormal as well.

Spark of Light was a very good read, and I read it in one sitting. I felt connected to the story and it's outcome immediately. Alex does a great job with the character, story line, and world development. Avery (the main character) is a confident, headstrong, and determined heroine. She has strength to survive everything that is horrific about her life - being forced to live in horrific conditions, being fed the half decayed leftover pieces of food, and to withstand the almost daily abuse and isolation. I will be bugging Alex in hopes that the next installment will be released soon!

I will end by saying that there is some mature content that I would not recommend for younger readers. Alex makes this perfectly clear in the book description, so it was not a shock to me. I am pleased that this information was included as it helps parents make appropriate decisions for their younger readers.

Thank you Elizabeth for making me sob tonight. *ahem*
I was already broken by chapter 4, but I just could not put this down. I love Avery...I'm in love with Zander *dreamy sigh*
There are a lot of difficult parts in this book, which resulted in a lot of tears, but it's worth it in the end and I'm so excited for the next book. Is it summer yet???

Received this book free for an honest review. I absolutely love this book! You should know that the author goes there. To places that make you want to hide; come out standing tall to fight for those in need; and jump up and down on the graves of the oppressors. Okay, that may be a bit much, but DAMN!... I'm ready to start a revolution. Whose with me? :0)
