The Last Eternal #9

A Traitor's Bounty

When a man’s hope is stripped from him, vengeance is all he has left.

They are gone. Dekker and Elizabeth, Clint and Sarah and all the rest.
Captured or worse.

It took the wanderer a hundred years to find them, his friends. His family. And now they are gone. Taken.

Taken by traitors who have forsaken their duty and chosen greed and power instead. They have betrayed their duty, their people and so have earned a traitor’s reward. And whatever else happens, the wanderer means to deliver it.

He goes to save his friends, his hope.
But if he cannot have them, if he cannot have it…
Then he will have his revenge instead.

In fire and smoke, in blood and the screams of the guilty…
He will bring vengeance.
He will bring a reckoning.

The battle for Celes continues. The horror that has replaced an Eternal reigns. A wounded leader faces a traitor within his own camp. An army of death soon approaching.

Another riveting epic installment in this western inspired dystopia. Thrills, terror and plenty of action await in the damned city of Celes!

Fun as always. :)

Much thanks to the author for this ARC.

Ungr is no stranger to being in danger. Nor of creatures and strangers regularly trying to kill him. This time, however, just about every living soul is in danger of being killed in an effort to capture or kill him. Besides that, amongst his companions there is a traitor this time. Which is how three of his loyal companions got captured.
In fact, sheer luck actually ensured that all of them did not get captured.....by another creature now parading as Charmer, the Eternal killed some decades ago.
But to deal with Charmer and those captured companions, Ungr needs to determine who the traitor is. Obviously.
Author Jacob Peppers continue in A Traitor's Bounty the engrossing dark fantasy in which lethal dark events continue to hug the footsteps of the last great Eternal, ensuring once more some rather frantic page turning to the end of this book.

Excellent - I just couldn't put it down!

Tne ninth book in the Last Enternal series, this was probably the most gripping instalment so far. I read it in a few hours almost without a break - putting it down was close to impossible.

The book starts with Ungr, the youngest Eternal, sorely and possibly mortally injured and fleeing in panic - something you would not expect if you have read the earlier books - after his friends and even his very special horse Veiker are all taken by the enemy. As he runs he suddenly realises what he is doing and seeks help to get his injuries treated so that he can try to save his friends, and also their loved ones who are at risk too.

The problem is, he is only one injured man even if he is the last Eternal. How can he, on his own, defeat the monster that is pretending to be another eternal called Charmer who runs the whole city with armies of soldiers and city watch to do her bidding as well as other monsters, and with an entire new army on their way to give her further support? How can he find out who betrayed him and his friends to Charmer and ensure that he or she gets their just deserts?

These may seem to be insurmountable problems, but you will have to read the book to find out whether or not he succeeds and, if so, how. The outcome is certainly far from clear, and has the potential to be very negative indeed.

This is a worthy new instalment in the ongoing tale, and hopefully it is not the last. Well worth the five stars I have given it, and highly recommended.

Entertaining

The wanderer is so many tropes in one, it does get a little predictable but remains engaging.

Good stories have more to do with the timing and way they are told than the stories themselves. Luckily we have a decent story and characters we do care about, even if they are, as I said, somewhat predictable.

The wanderer continues his quest with his companions culminating in a showdown at the end. Avoiding spoilers, the journey is a great distraction from reality. In particular everyone can relate in some way to all the main characters, whether you are them, or you know them already, which makes this series instantly relatable.

A comment on this book in relation to other series - if you like Jacob's other series, you will like this one. Like any good entrepreneur, Jacob continues to give his audience what they want/expect.

In general I also have to praise the author for their continued delivery cycle which as any reader knows is hit or miss. The volume of work and the choice to conclude those series is something I appreciate almost more than the stories. As a reader of epic fantasy where there are years (sometimes decades) between releases, or they just leave you hanging forever, this is the type of work that readers like me need. It's so easy to get out of the routine of picking up a book, this is the type of writing that keeps me engaged.

a good story

Ungr is still trying to rid the world of Eternal imposters. This time it’s Charmer, who’s trying to capture the evil sword and kill Ungr. As all his new friends are in danger, Ungr must figure out a way to save them.
There’s still the philosophical monologues by a few characters. But this is a trademark of the author’s writing style we’ve come to expect. There’s still the gallows humor to fend off fear and hurt. But at least Ungr isn’t always blaming himself anymore or saying that he’s alone to do the right thing. He has come to accept that these are true friends and will fight with him.
The pacing is fine as I’ve come to expect how these stories are told. There are a few tense moments. There are also some unexpected actions and a betrayal. Unfortunately the betrayal isn’t a high stakes character, which would’ve given a real wallop to the story. Most of the characters are true to themselves. There isn’t much grey area at all.
Basically it’s a fun light read fantasy. You know what you’re getting. Although there are dark moments, it’s not a dark or grimdark fantasy.
But it’s entertaining.

Wish this was better

At this point, 9 books in, I am reading merely because I can’t leave things unfinished. The writing is just poor, unimaginative and the story is underdeveloped. If you like an epic fantasy that seems to have spent the last 5+ books in the same place with happy endings at the end of each where people get injured and miraculously heal and no one of consequence dies and characters are one dimensional, then this is the series for you.

Ungr, the last eternal, and his friends continue trying to keep the city of Celes from falling. After getting aid from a local mob boss things begin to spiral out of control and Ungr no longer knows who he can trust. Always non stop action, intrigue, mystery and sword play will continue to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Wanderer is looking for his family and friends. He will find them or take vengeance instead. As always well written to keep you wanting more The characters draw you in to make you feel a part of the story. If possible this book is even better than the last. Don’t miss out on being a part of the series.

Fast paced through out. Characters continue to develop with each story. A real page turner. Didn't feel short changed at th e end of this story segment. A great cliff hanger to end this episode with too

I thought this was yet another good entry into this story series. Well written as always and continuing to grow the depth of the characters. My only ask would be to have a larger chunk of the story in the next release. Can’t wait until the next one!

Grrreat

Action from start to finish. Keeps getting better. I must admit I was not surprised by the surprise. But good to see the crime boss as a crime boss finally.

A final reckoning for some

I have raced through this series so far. Action packed, twists and turns, always closing off with a strong finale and A Traitors Bounty is no different.

Someone has betrayed the wanderer and his friends. The fake Charmer’s guard was waiting and all of them were captured. Except they made a mistake and the wanderer is free. As soon as he rescues his friends and make sure they’re safe, his wrath will be unleashed on all involved, especially the fake Charmer.

Footnote: 1) Ned & Fred remind me of Ulf & Wulf in the Brotherband Chronicles series by John Flanagan. Good series.

Fave scenes: the horseless wagon, retrieving Veikr, the wanderer talking to the boy Dillion and Jessup’s dungeon surprise move.
