This is the president Aaron is studying for the 5th grade presidential hall of fame. I picked up the book because I realized I knew nothing about President Hayes. I thought the book was nicely written.
Things I learned: Rutherford B. Hayes was from Ohio. He led a sheltered life as a child because he was sickly and his mother was over-protective. He developed a love for the outdoors and adventure. He was well-educated--became a successful lawyer. He fought in the Civil War--was a valiant soldier and enjoyed the thrill of battle. His men loved and responded to him. He was elected to the legislature while still at war. He'd refused to come home to campaign and didn't actually go to Washington until the war was over.
Became the governor of Ohio for two terms. Elected president in 1877 in a much disputed election against another really upright, honest fellow named Tindel. Liked things done right and honestly. Tried to put a stop to Washington cronyism by appointing people who could do a good job, even if they were Democrats or Southerners. Tried to build bridges with the South by removing Northern troops. Got along well with people. Great family man. Quit after one term to spend quiet time with his family. Didn't care about the fame.
