First, a word of advice, do not read this book at work in a room with a dodgy door and creaky floorboards. I literally jumped out of my skin when the door creeped open at work 🤣🫣
Shadowed Echoes is a paranormal thriller that follows a young family. After the death of their daughter, Eric and Paige are trying to live with the grief. Their eight-year-old son, Callum, is also trying to come to terms with the loss of his sister. Disturbing visions and nightmares start to plague the family as a thick mist consumes their lives. The past holds many answers to the horrors now invading every aspect of the family's life, but the road to peace is shrouded in hidden secrets, troubling pasts, and trust.
Chillingly atmospheric, I was completely absorbed in this book quickly, turning the page to see what happened next. I was fully gripped in horror that haunts the narrative. Written in the third person, the story jumps from the insights of Eric, Paige, and Callum, giving each of their insights into what they experience and their grief. This was so effective, and Heath captured each individual's voice perfectly in the wake of a horrifying tragedy. I was emotionally invested from the first chapter, and the story just never let up, constantly throwing surprises, twists, and thrills.
My only criticism is that at the big reveal of why all the devastation and hauntings are happening is quickly explained, and brushed over, and I just felt a little let down after holding my breath for so much of the book.
Overall, I loved the characters. Eric is battling with his past demons, and occasionally, they encroach on his recovery and his family life. But I felt he had so much depth, and I rooted for his character so much, even in his more dubious choices, I understood where he was coming from. Callum was the most innocent narrative, and my heart broke for him as he took on the blame and guilt of his little sister's death. I literally just wanted to give a hug, especially as he became physically affected by the circumstance and paranormal activity. Paige was the definition of mama bear, where her children were concerned you did not mess with her, and I gave her full credit for sticking by her family. Yet, I got a little frustrated with her about mid-way through, as she was described as being so selfless, yet I found her to be the most self-absorbed character. There was a point when I got so mad at her for throwing accusations about it, and her actions don't add up to what she says.
My biggest shout out though goes to Berty, or Bert, an Australian Shepherd that is the most loyal, affectionate, and protective addition to the family. As a dog lover, he encapsulates everything that gives dogs the title of "man's best friend.""
I honestly am trying to be so careful about what I say as I really don't want to spoil anything about this book. All I can say is I would recommend this to anyone who likes a paranormal thriller, with some very unexpected twists. I also think it is a great introduction to the genre if you want to test the waters.
