This was a good story, and I love how it was broken up into parts. This allowed us not to sit in the back-and-forth for too long.

This story takes us through a 10-year journey of Creed and Serenity. These babies had big dreams plus fell in love young and HARD. I just knew it would get bad before it got good but my goodness. There was a lot of conflict. Between his mama, Gianna, Jailah….I just can’t. I feel like Serenity adjusted so much of her life for a man at such a young age.

Although I wish this story went in a different direction with her moving on with a new love interest, this is a second chance romance😂, but my “let the niggas feel it in their chest” senses were going off really hard. But Creed was her soulmate and they made it work through all of the trials

Rants
* Sienna infuriated me. Although, she fixed it. I still feel like more of that journey should’ve been on page.
* I am not a fan of Creed Langston. Creed was super petty, he did her dirty, and his expectations for her to just move on with him were crazy. I just kept saying MAN UP AND BE BETTER!
* Serenity deserved more than that Vegas situation. IMO
* The whole situation with Lennox at the end 🤨 SO CREED GETS A PASS BUT YOUR DADDY DON'T???

Creed 🏀 & Serenity 🩰- 4.5⭐️

A great sports romance, friends to lovers, second chance romance. The book is broken up into 3 parts which allows us to get a full story. They meet as YA’s & we get to see how they navigate & grow into the adults they are by the end of the book.

I finished this book in 2 days. I didn’t want to put it down 😩

This was my first book I read from Genesis and I will def be reading more from her 🫶🏽

My notes:

-Knew Gianna was going to be a problem from the very beginning.
- Sienna was not a good mother in the beginning of the book. I hate how Serenity forgave her after them 2 years passed. BUT she was a changed woman after that.
-Creed needed to beg & grovel more. Serenity ain’t get her get lick back enough for me lol
-Serenity was a good step mommy ☺️
-Serenity sisterhood with her friends . Love a good friend group!
-Lennox situation toward the end of the book. Did we really need that?

I enjoyed the writing style and would like to read something else by her.

Struggled with this book bc it was two really messy toxic people. Creed was a bit of a tosser - weak ladies man but apparently loves heroine. Heroine no better keeps going back to him over 10 years.

This was a lot. Beyond messy. From Serenity mom Sienna who was first in line to say sorry I had feelings about that apology but I’m glad she said sorry. Young love is hard to manipulate when you don’t have the insight to know what you want. Why was Creed mother so hard on Serenity and was so proud to be on Gianna side I’m at a loss. Gianna did she love Creed or what she thought she could have when he made it to the NBA. Serenity was the brightest of this messy relationship she tried on many levels to go high when everyone wanted to go below the belt. I was hoping for more and yet we moved from one extreme to the next with little to no reason. But this too shall pass no spoilers.

I was going to give this book a 2 star but I decided to change the rating to 3 stars. Overall I think this book is a 2.5 stars for me. Creed and Serenity really took me through it for 400 pages. All that drama between babymama and a girlfriend I really thought Creed would grow up during the time jump. I was going to DNF the book however, I thought Creed would grow up after cheating on Serenity with his babymama in their home causing her to crash her car. The couple argument at the end of the book really pissed me and Serenity dad having a side baby was just wild.... I feel like Serenity deserved better especially taking back a cheater like Creed.

Set Me Free ended up being a 4-star read for me, mainly because I was satisfied with how the story wrapped up. While the writing itself didn’t always feel mature, the overall storyline kept me engaged, and I genuinely wanted to see how everything played out between Serenity and Creed.

The book is structured in multiple parts, and each section introduces its own twists, sometimes almost too many. By Part Two, the story starts to feel a bit all over the place, with certain plotlines receiving more attention than necessary. Still, the pacing and surprises kept things interesting.

One thing that stood out to me was the age of the characters. This is not a “grown and sexy” romance — it’s very much late teens to early adult. Once I adjusted my expectations, the characters’ behavior made more sense. Creed, in particular, plays a lot of games, but considering his age and circumstances, it felt realistic rather than frustrating.

The celebrity-love aspect also worked well here. Serenity comes from a well-known family, and Creed’s rise from college athlete to the NBA added believable pressure, temptation, and conflict to their relationship. While not every storyline landed perfectly, the overall journey was enjoyable and relatable for readers who appreciate coming-of-age romance with ambition, fame, and messy growth.

This was my first book by Genesis Carter, and while it wasn’t flawless, it kept my interest and delivered a satisfying ending, enough for me to rate it a solid four stars.

Not my happy ending

*some spoilers* First let me say I love this book and can't wait to read the next one. The writing was amazing and I was immediately pulled into the characters and it didn't really feel like a slow burn to me. With that being said I don't really like her relationship with Creed and I don't really like how he just glosses over him being unfaithful and not really taking the time to understand why he did what he did or why he kept going back to women like Gianna to me Creed had a lot of growing up to do and didn't really deserve to marry Serenity until he faced why he continued to make impulsive crazy decisions. No comment on Serenity's dad I gotta admit that would have me second guessing my own marriage considering her dad and husband were both guilty of the same thing. All in all I did enjoy the book and it was a page turner I just wouldn't consider a favorite for romances or second chances.

Honestly, if you've read the Parachute series by Takerra Allen, you've basically already read this book. And I aint saying this author bit off Takerra's story, but this book was extremely similar. The fact that Serenity and Creed meet and start falling for each other while they both had partners already, the fact that Creed ends up cheating on Serenity with his ex, the fact that Serenity gets back with her ex before Creed, Iman, when her and Creed break up, and their relationship ends when he realizes she's still in love with Creed. Even the fact that Serenity's father cheated on his wife, who mothered his child that wasn't biologically her. The fact that Serenity is mothering Creed's child with another woman, the same woman he cheated on her with, who is conveniently out of the picture. This book was Parachutes, except squished into one book and not spread throughout a three-book series.

Although the plot was extremely similar, this author unfortunately doesn't have the same magic pen game that Takerra has. The characters were just extremely one dimensional, and there were parts of the book where I felt like their personalities just drastically changed, so they didn't feel well written. For example, for most of the book, Serenity is poised, even in arguments, even when Gianna and her mother were disrespecting her. Fast forward a few years and all of a sudden, Serenity is mutha fucka this, and mutha fucka that, and keep that bitch away from my son. I was like woah, where did this personality shift even come from? Even the fact that Creed cheated came out of nowhere because he and Serenity were good when he cheated, they hadn't been having any issues in the two years since he'd had his son with Gianna. They had bought a house together, and were attached at the hip when they weren't in school or working, and Creed like absolutely hated Gianna and would constantly put her in her place when she talked shit about Serenity. And then all of a sudeen he cheated on Serenity with Gianna? Had Gianna in his marriage bed? That didn't even seem like something Creed would do, and again, it wasn't like he and Serenity were eve fighting; they'd been good for a while. Not to mention, he didn't even cheat on Gianna the entire ten years they were together! But now all of a sudden, he's a cheater...? Even Gianna getting caught up while smuggling drugs across the border was like what? Gianna wanted to be a pampered princess, and having Creed's baby meant she was living the life of luxury. Aint no way she would be smuggling no damn drugs.

The plot..? Predictable, because like I said, this book is almost a replica of Parachutes
The characters...? Annoying. I didn't like not one character. Serenity's mom was a bitch, the dad was a cheater, Serenity was hypocritical, Creed was literally a loser, and her friends were annoying too.

Would I recommend...? ehhh... probably not if you've already read Parachutes because it will be hard not to compare and this book fell way short of that literary masterpiece.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a new to me author I found via IG, but I definitely plan on reading more of her work.

Shout out to the author for giving us a full story, that oddly read like a series. From the beginning I was locked in with Creed and Serenity. They were both equally annoying and equally lovable.

Some aspects of the story didn’t track for me. For example, what Sienna said to Serenity would take time to process and move forward from. Especially because the way she is treated was highly discussed. So the repair between those two felt disingenuous. And I found myself waiting on the other shoe to drop.

And the issue with Lennox at the very end of the story. #1 horrible timing to throw that drama end and not leave room for more explanation. But also, why add that? For the entirety of the story, I was waiting on him to grow a back bone and take up for his daughter. Sienna’s actions towards Serenity, was enough of a reason to leave her. So the ending with them didn’t track to me.

I was happy for Naseem. Really would love a story with him and Egypt.

Love the friendships displayed. Gianna and Jah were bops. Overall this was a roller coaster, but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to checking out her catalog.

If you love something so much let it go. If it comes back it was meant to be.

I’m not really a slow burn girl, but this one got me. It didn’t even feel like a slow burn, it just flowed so naturally and kept me hooked the whole time.

The character development for each character was done so well. Watching them grow from young adults into mature individuals navigating life, love, and parenthood was really something special.

At first, I wasn’t sure about Serenity—I thought she might be a little stuck up from those first few pages. But I was completely wrong. I ended up falling in love with her character. However I did not like the way she handled the situation with her father.

Not a fairytale kind of love, but the kind that feels real. A little messy, a little chaotic, but the love was always there. And I’m not even gonna lie—I stayed team Creed the whole time. They were young, they made mistakes, but I loved that they grew and found their way back to each other.

I still feel like they both had some growing left to do, so I’m choosing to believe they ended up going to couples counseling.🤷🏾‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

Oh My!!

The reviews do this beauty no justice! We have amazing storytelling with an actual beginning, middle, and end. Two complex characters that are just trying to navigate adulthood the realistic way. You know….making shitty mistakes, learning and growing into the person you’re meant to be…

My sister once told me that you’re not really an adult until you’re 36 and I believe it. You’re finally at a place where you’ve done the whole ghetto adulting thing longer than childhood. Creed deserves grace because he definitely stepped up more than what others would have done. Serenity deserves props because at 20 she stood ten toes down on not taking the disrespect and finding herself before committing to a man.

Anywho…enjoy this story. Savor it. Appreciate the penmanship. Have some wine to go with the spice and give this author all of the flowers. Such a gem!

I loved this book. Serenity was a freshman in college and Creed was a junior in college and also a NBA draft prospect. The book is broken into three parts College years, two years later and then five years later. It kind of reminds you of Love and Basketball, but with real life tragedies and scenarios. It is a slow burn, but I felt like everything that happened was necessary. The characters grew a lot in the book, but sometimes they were annoying. I definitely think you should read it, but it will have you on an emotional roller coaster.

Wow — this story exceeded my expectations. I love how the story spans 10 years into the relationship between Creed and Serenity and giving us a full spectrum of the emotions and events within their lives and love story. It brought drama, a bit of spice, heartbreak, and a dash of toxicity all wrapped in this book. The ending and epilogue wasn’t my favorite, but the entirety of the story made up for that. Pick this up if you can!

Creed & Serenity

Sports romance, friends to lovers and second chance romance, all wrapped up into one. This was a new to me author. I got this book at the BRAE event. It is book one of the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love how we met our MC‘s creed and serenity as young adults and then the book took us on a journey of their relationship throughout adulthood, and we got to see all of the ups and downs that couple goals through with in a relationship.

set me free

The promo had me stalking this release & it was worth the wait. I carried my kindle with me everywhere today and couldn’t put this down! The tea was so juicy. Serenity was head strong and knew her worth. She enhanced everyone’s life around her. Creed fumbled more than a few times. Great read!

An excellent slow burn

My first read by Genesis and I absolutely loved it! Although this technically a slow burn, the pace of the book as a whole is perfect. Creed and Serenity were the definition of right person, wrong time. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

A young love story that goes through some trials and seems seperating may be the best option but love wins in the end. Glad to see the MMC stood his ground on who he wanted to be with and didnt care what relationships were broken in the process.
