The Day the Fire Died: A Prequel Novella

Rate this book
Thirteen years before the events of The Lost Firebreather...

The land of Drakona is a continent ruled by five dragon nations.

The Earthshaper Fiefdoms, a dozen disparate city states, working in tumultuous harmony.
The Cloudseeker Republic, a nation of scholars steeped in politics and intrigue.
The Ironscale Empire, an all-consuming tide that threatens to devour the world.
The Shadestalker Tribes, as secretive as they are deadly.
The Firebreather Kingdom, burned to the ground.

The tales you are about to read are three different perspectives of the same event. Three very different dragons, all experiencing the same calamity.

Idalia, a princess with a secret.
Hammerclaw, a soldier with a conscience.
Albuca, a child with a dream.

These are their stories as they witness The Day the Fire Died.

Well this was a shocking delight for me! Usually I don't go for short story anthologies but this one worked very well for me. Three distinct plots, all relevant to the overall story of The Lost FireBreather, told in a way that makes all three of them come around to the same place in the end. Beautiful, tragic, just a wee bit horny (Well, the first two were), and engaging from start to finish.

First story was about Ash's mother leading up to the tragic loss of his egg. Second was about Hammerclaw's backstory and why he ended up where he is, and the third was about Albuca as he discovers Ash's egg. All three of them were disparate in terms of tone, setting, and narrator, but they all relate to the same plot, seeing it from different angles in ways that I genuinely think did a better job elaborating on the world building of Drakona than the three main novels did. I don't know why but while I enjoyed the series up to this point, this novella compiling a handful of short stories is what got me hooked. Can't wait to see what comes of this in time because I'm on board!
