You can call me Mouse, 'cause that's my tag I'm into it all, everything's my bag my ace is Styx, he'll always do Add Bev and Sheri, and you got my crew
...and a crew it is! For fourteen-year-old Mouse, this summer is anything but boring. His father, who checked out from the family eight years ago, is now trying to make a comeback as a dad. Beverly, a new girl from California, seems to like locking lips with the Mouse--but she seems to like other guys, as well. Sheri is trying to persuade the gang to join a dance contest. And there's a rumor that a lot of money--the loot from a '30's bank heist, to be exact--is hidden somewhere in an abandoned Harlem building, and you know the Mouse is determined to get a piece of that action.
Walter Dean Myers was born on August 12, 1937 in Martinsburg, West Virginia but moved to Harlem with his foster parents at age three. He was brought up and went to public school there. He attended Stuyvesant High School until the age of seventeen when he joined the army.
After serving four years in the army, he worked at various jobs and earned a BA from Empire State College. He wrote full time after 1977.
Walter wrote from childhood, first finding success in 1969 when he won the Council on Interracial Books for Children contest, which resulted in the publication of his first book for children, Where Does the Day Go?, by Parent's Magazine Press. He published over seventy books for children and young adults. He received many awards for his work in this field including the Coretta Scott King Award, five times. Two of his books were awarded Newbery Honors. He was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award and the Virginia Hamilton Award. For one of his books, Monster, he received the first Michael Printz Award for Young Adult literature awarded by the American Library Association. Monster and Autobiography of My Dead Brother were selected as National Book Award Finalists.
In addition to the publication of his books, Walter contributed to educational and literary publications. He visited schools to speak to children, teachers, librarians, and parents. For three years he led a writing workshop for children in a school in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Walter Dean Myers was married, had three grown children and lived in Jersey City, New Jersey. He died on July 1, 2014, following a brief illness. He was 76 years old.
Harlem, New York is Walter Dean Myers's beat. He grew up in the neighborhood and many of his books are set there, including The Young Landlords, Motown and Didi, Scorpions (a 1989 Newbery Honor book), The Beast, Street Love, Harlem Summer, and this novel, The Mouse Rap. In it, we meet fourteen-year-old Mouse, who likes hanging with friends and shooting hoops. The Mouse and his gang are real comfortable cruising Harlem for stuff to get into, and one day their attention is grabbed by a local news crew interviewing a man who claims there's treasure hidden in the city. Rumor has it that a bank robbery in the 1930s went wrong, and a gangster by the name of Tiger Moran had to stash the cash in a hurry and was never able to retrieve it. Mouse, along with his friend Styx, want to track the treasure and liberate it for their own use—the heist happened so long ago that whoever finds the loot gets to keep it—but the plan doesn't really come to life until Mouse learns that Sheri Jones, a girl he and Styx are down with, has a personal connection to the money. Her grandfather—Gramps— was an errand boy for Tiger Moran in the '30s, so who better to guess where the boss would deposit stolen goods if the cops were hounding him? This treasure hunt thing could work out for The Mouse.
"That's what makes poor people poor...They're looking to find treasures instead of working and saving every day."
—The Mouse Rap, P. 21
Distractions are everywhere in Harlem for a handsome teen rapper and baller like Mouse. He has to deal with a shyster named Pooky and his monkey, Hollywood. Pooky has a knack for conning Mouse into competing against Hollywood in hoops contests, which Hollywood always wins. The Mouse is also getting on with Beverly, a friend of Sheri's who moved here from California. Beverly is not a typical girl—she's a martial artist who can stave off unwelcome advances from any aggressive young guy—but she has her eye on Mouse as more than a friend. Will he ever understand the game she's playing? Mouse's father is back home years after going AWOL, but Mouse isn't ready to welcome "Mr. D" with open arms, and his mother isn't sure she will, either. Can he be trusted not to split again if times get tough? Sheri, Beverly, and Ceil—a close-knit trio who call themselves The Selects—want Mouse, Styx, and their friend Omega Taylor to do a dance contest with them, and how can the boys beg off when Gramps is their ticket to Tiger Moran's treasure? The path to paydirt looks promising as Gramps reveals details of what went down decades ago between him, a pal known as Sudden Sam, and Tiger Moran. Mouse and the gang are on the right track, but a few others need to be brought in to consult, notably a twelve-year-old redhead with two different-colored eyes who wants to use the gangster name "Booster." Poking around in the affairs of dead crime bosses is already risky, but Gramps doubts Booster's maturity. The kid could blow everything to heck and land them behind bars, and Gramps isn't looking to do a stretch this late in life. But Mouse and company have big plans for their cut of Tiger Moran's money, so working with Booster is how it's got to be. Are they on the brink of a Harlem rags-to-riches story?
Walter Dean Myers is wonderful, but not all his books are. Go read Fallen Angels, Somewhere in the Darkness (a 1993 Newbery Honoree), Monster (winner of the inaugural Michael L. Printz Medal, in 2000), Game, Sunrise Over Fallujah, or Lockdown, just to name a few, and you'll see how good he can be. The Mouse Rap, however, is disorganized, unfocused, and the writing isn't immersive in the least. I wanted to get into the action and love the story, but that's nearly impossible; if you want a better Harlem-set piece by Walter Dean Myers, you probably have dozens of options. Andy Bacha's cover art for the edition I read doesn't have much to do with the story, but at least we get a feel for Mouse's personality from it. Because of Walter Dean Myers's smooth, deliciously hip language, I'll rate The Mouse Rap one and a half stars, but he has written vastly superior books. If you're a fan of the man, though, why not pick up a copy and judge for yourself?
The name of this book is ''The Mouse Rap'', it's by a man Walter Dean Myers. This book took place in Harlem, New York. The main character is named The Mouse and he enjoys hanging out with his friends, playing basketball, and listening to music. His best friend is Styx, he often loves doing everything that the Mouse does but he eventually got into a fight with the Mouse because the Mouse said that Beverly might be his new best friend and Styx didn't like that because they have been best friends forever. Beverly is a girl that they met at school and was the girl that the Mouse fell in love with, but she had liked the Mouse and Styx which was kind of odd but then she fell more for the Mouse and kissed him. Sheri is a girl that is close to Beverly and she is a dancer and wanted the boys to be apart of her group dance. Omega is also a dancer and is dancing with Beverly and Sheri begging the boys to dance with them too. The last important character is Booster, he was the grandson of an old gang member who tried to help everyone find the money that was lost but messed up the robbery and almost got caught.
One day The Mouse was watching the news at Sheri's house with all his friends and they came to find out that there was some money hidden that had belonged to an old gang, and whoever found it got a lot of money. The girls from their group wanted the boys to be a part of a dance competition the school was going to have, so they attended in it and one of the old gang member's grandson was there so they took him thinking he would know where the money was. They told the grandson to rob a bank and pretend like that money was the one that got lost, but he failed in doing it but they did not get caught. They kept looking for it and found the money and then the news reporter came and everyone that was part of it were on television.
I actually liked how the book ended because they eventually found the money and got rewarded for it. The ending was happy since no problems occurred and the problem got solved with no one being upset about it. The text states, ''So once again The Mouse is Out Here On His Own. But hey, somebody has to stay loose and keep things under control, right?'. This shows that Styx was mad at the Mouse earlier in the book, but then he got to know the real truth about the Mouse, which lead to the Mouse being alone. I liked how the Mouse got out of a fake friendship that he thought was going to last forever but did not.
I enjoyed mostly everything about this book, and it was mostly all very descriptive which I liked. Although some of the parts could have used more description I did like the book. For example when the author was talking about how they found the money and everyone started going their own ways, it was not as detailed as it should have been but other than that the book was good. People who like books that are dealing with problems, mysteries, gangs, and money would love this book since that is what it is mostly about.
If you like reading about comedy, love,an action/drama you will like this book.
Summary/Setting: This book takes place in New York with a kid name Mouse and his friends looking for action in the summer. They end up dancing for a concert and searching for long lost money. It belonged to some old gang member, Tiger Moran. Mouse and his friends are assisted by his friend’s grandfather, he worked for Tiger Moran. As the story flows on love and drama come along, Mouse and this girl in his group named Beverly start to catch feelings for each other. That end up with a jealous friend and a lot more drama.
Favorite Quote: My favorite quote from the book is”mouse is a ball-player not a fighter.”
Analyze Quote: I this quote because it shows what type of person he is.Also it shows how he protects his image and the way people think of him. He’s very curious about what people think about him.
Personal connections: I can connect with mouse because we both play basketball and we’re always bored. So we look for action , not saying i’ll go looking for lost money but I know how to find fun. Also he’s a little bit of a wise guy like me.
One question:Why the author put so many genres in one book?, because it went to action one chapter then, to drama, love and friendship.
The title of this story is THE MOUSE RAP. The author is Walter Dean Myers. the book was published is 1990. One of my opinions of this book is its wonderful I love how they look for treasure and go through good times and bad times. And I like how mouse and stxe are best buds no matter what happens.
The setting of the story THE MOUSE RAP is in Harlem. The mouse is a 14 year old boy who lives in Harlem whose best friend is stxe. And he also has a crush on a girl names Beverly and she likes him back. The mouse and Beverly end up goin out "dating". I am not like the mouse because he plays basket ball and I play football. The supporting characters are stxe Beverly the grand dad. The characters hit the jack pot when they find thousands.
The good guy faces a bully named David who thinks him and his team is beter then everyone at the court so mouse and his gang verse David and his gang and whoop them. So David gets mad and tells the mouse to meet him at the park at 6:00. I am not like David because I don't try to fight kids that beat me in a sport. The conflict ends up by the selects beat David up.
I think the theme of this story is money isn't everything. Because before they had money they were best friends after they got the money they were still best friends all of them. The main character mouse learned that he needed a dad in his life he needed a family not just a mom. And the money brought everyone together as a state city. The mouse needed a father figure to teach him how to be a man because a lady cant do that.
I liked that the book wasn't all about finding money because that would of been boring. I also liked that the characters we some what like me in a way. I did not like his dad because he was all up on mouse's mom I bet mouse didn't like that either that why he got mad at him. My favorite character was mouse. My least favorite character was the dad Mr. D. The best part of this story is when they found a lot of money I wish I was them. If I had a chance to meet the author I would tell him to make a sequel.
I would most definitely recommend this book to others like my family. Because this book is amazing it is funny and exciting. I give this book a 5 star rate because this was one of my favorite books.
"The Mouse Rap" By Walter Dean Myers is a great book to satisfy your need for action, drama, and comedy. i personally really enjoyed this book because of how i could relate to the main characters and his struggles and position that he is in. mouse and his friends want to become famous any way possible. one day a word on the street says that there is a building in Harlem that used to be owned by a old gangster and has a vault with millions. Join Mouse and his friends as they overcome many obstetrical and go through drama.t through out their interesting adventure it will make you go from laughing to crying. in your free time you should defiantly go check out "The Mouse Rap".
The genre of this books is realistic fiction. Overall i think people should read this book. It was a decent book. The story takes place in the City. Some of the main characters is the Mom the Brother anfd the main Jason. The problem in the story is that the main person wanna stop doing what he good at. He wanna stop but every body telling not too. He wanna quit because he thinks he do do something better in life. So he quits for a little bit. At the end of the day he noticed that he was really good at it. So he starts to rap again and he don´t quit. The problem is solved at the end of the book. The conflict of the story is person v.s person because hes mad at him self. The major theme of the story is the main person trying too figure out what/ he wants too do for the rest of his life. The tittle relates too the book by the theme that he wants too do. The setting of the book is important because that were the main person grew up in. The setting dont add to the conflict. I was suprised when he said he didnt wanna do what he wanted too do anymore because he was really good at it. I liked the way the author made the main person go back too what he was good at because he was really good at what he was doing. My favorite part of the book was the begging of the book when everything was cool. The major theme of the book is the main person wants too quit on the thing that hes really good at.
The title of this book I read is THE MOUSE RAP. The author is Walter Dean Myers. The book was published in 1990 My opinion of this book is great because I like how they look for loot and go though good times and bad times its not just all goody goody for them. And they fall in and out of love and search for hidden treasure from the days of al Capone. Mouse has a best friend named Styx and a girl that likes him named Beverly that just moved to Harlem from California.
The setting of this story is in Harlem. The good guy is a 14 year old boy named mouse. Mouse is a boy who thinks he's the best at basket basketball. I am nothing like the mouse because I'm white he's black and he plays basketball and I play football. In this amazing the characters fall in and out of love looking for buried treasure they don't only play ball they get in fights and other crazy stuff.
The good guy mouse faces a bully named David who thinks he better then everyone else in basketball. Into the mouse beats him at basket ball
what i learned from this book is that people have it tough in the ghettos and stuff and they need to be in a gang to survive. but this book is different even though it takes place in the ghetto. These young kids hav to rap to get there way through. Now there raps and beats is hot, but it kinda scary to habe to do that to pretty mch try to live the rest of our life. It is also about some kids who like to beat and rhyme. My favorite one was when they was rappin about how there moms is a crazy lady and stuff.
i rate this book a 4 star because it is so great and it really keeps you going. But it is an unexpected thing because you really wouldnt rap in a book. Or you would not hear a book. This book is greeat and think that you should read this book and you will see how great this book is and how exciting it is to read a rap. Or in other words spit a beat
The story a read was The mouse rap. by Walter Myers. The thing I liked bout the book was that everyone stay together in the story like they made sure one and eachother was okay and no one got hure. they stay out of trouble.
They had to found someone that knew more about the moneyso they can find it. the author message in the book is that if u work together you can get/have anything you want in life so u should hard in life stayed together they day they never fight. Even thogh the was robbing poeple for money.
By friends together because if you want someone than get so a rate i would give his is a 4. because some of thing in the book was funny sad soo in really think u should read the book
I can remember this book like it was just yesterday, it was the first ever Walter Dean Meyers book I read and I loved it so much because of the rhyming I would walk around reciting it. It's about adolescent boys who go through the struggles of peoe now and the way they go through it and the way it's explained is so incredibly realistic ! It can still connect to today's youth with the many group of friends that are "down"'and look out for one another and spend so much time with each other. Of course it relates to youth in many other ways with crushes and school but your going to have to read it to find out !
i liked the book.the reason why i liked the book was because i could relate to it.it was a very fun read.most of mthe time i didnt want to put the book down. one reason why i liked the book was because it envolved backetball.the other reason is because thwe main charter is a boy .also because it was a little romance in the book.i hope you reading this would pick up the book and read it.hope you enjoy!
The book the mouse rap by Walter dean Myers really sparked my interest because it had to do with the two things that I enjoy the most; hip-hop/rap and basketball. The characters all had good personality. Everyone was their own character. I would really recommend this to any 12 to 15 year old guy. I don't think it would be partially good for a girl though, because it might be harder to connect with the main character mouse
This book had me laughing at the beginning of each chapter, cuz the main character in the story "mouse" gives the reader a chance to freestyle. That was a pretty cool idea for Walter Dean Meyers to insert into the story. I rated this book 5 stars. I have a copy of this book at home. I would recommend this book to people who like to laugh.......naw, I'm just jokin. Just read it.
One of Myers' early works that my student and I are reading this summer. I thought it was okay; a lot goes on-- a mystery, friendship troubles, first girlfriend, mom and dad dating again and dance competition. Too much plot for me and not enough of one thing. But fun to follow a teenager and his summer adventures.
So far The Mouse Rap is definitely a really good book about a boy who is trying to find a lost treasure from one of the most notorious street gangsters/mobsters of all time. Walter Dean Myers is such a good author, and i would like to continue reading more books from him.
I think the book was good. I think the book would take place at a ghetto/hood type of place. The protaginist Mouse/Fred puts us in his world/shoes and puts us in his life, and he tells us what happens in his lifetime.
This book is really inspirational because it shows that you should not give up on your dreams. That's why people should read this book because it's really good.
