Praise for Judith

“There are writers, but even rarer, there are storytellers. Judith Sonnet is a storyteller and of the very best follow her down the path, unlatch the gate, and disappear inside the dark world she’s cultivated. Once she takes you by the hand, you’ll never look back.” Rebecca Rowland, author of White Trash and Recycled Nightmares.

“Judith Sonnet is so much more than an extreme horror writer. She knows how to write compelling, complex characters, and she knows what scares us.” Lucas Mangum, author of Saint Sadist.

“Trust me, Judith Sonnet's THE HOME might just be the best horror novel you read this year. Great characters, stellar concept, creative villains, perfect pacing and an ending I promise you won't see coming. A masterclass in horror.” Duncan Ralston, author of Woom.

“Welcome to my new favorite subgenre of Judith Sonnet.” Gage Greenwood, author of Bunker Dogs.

This was a nice mix of short stories. There's some that's bloody, others have creatures, ghosts and the worst monster of all... humans. There's some bitter sweet ones in here and others that have that Memento Mori type vibes. My favorites were The Farm The Bridge.... that one had me hiding under the covers. I was picturing Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark type vibes. You know those creepy pictures? I pictured everything like that and it freaked me out. Then there was the Squonk. That was a good one. and The Last Alcoholic On Earth. Not all monsters are evil. and not all humans are protectors. I've always been in love with the concept of this story. Judith has went from Extreme/Splatterpunk horror to quiet horror and I'm loving it. The whole mixture of everything put together, never knowing what you're going to get is so interesting. I love the variety.

Terror! Horror! Agony!: A Collection of (Mostly) Quiet Horror Stories
By Judith Sonnet

I don’t have the credentials to be making this claim, but this is absolutely where Judith thrives in writing styles and themes, etc. This entire collection is fucking brilliant from start to finish. Easily my number one from her at the moment.

Over the last year and a half Judith has made me gag to hell and back, cringe like a little betch and creeped me eff out… and now she’s officially made me cry. All ten stories deserve attention but I’m going to pick a few of my favorites to highlight—

Graveyard Dirt:

“What’s it like down there? Down in the earth? All-dark. The way the dark felt under my bed when I was a little kid and I thought there were monsters down there—No. Even darker than that.”

I am obsessed with one. It’s the first story in the collection and damn, it’s so good. It gives Alice in Wonderland vibes but make it a property with a historical church / gravesite / thick forest woods and ghostly. This is one of those stories I wish could be expanded on!

Eerie and Beautiful:

“But still it nagged at me… why had I been invited into this dark, scary, and gorgeous museum? Surely there was an ulterior motive at play…”

Eep!!! I had no idea what direction this one would go in and I was NOT disappointed. Just imagine being homeless then going into an amazing museum with a beautiful person and finding a statue… of yourself… yeah. Creepy AF.

The Healing Room:

“There were strangers in her room… she knew she wasn’t crazy. She wasn’t scared enough to hallucinate this vividly.”

Okay, I’m a sucker for creepy motels. Not in real life, but I will read about them all day long. This was definitely another favorite in the bunch. Had a couple of jump scares. Strangers disappearing and reappearing. An exorcist. And idk guys, I noted how effing creepy this story was. I am OBSESSED.

Infinite Yarn:

“All of us want to have people who look at us and see what we see, who truly and totally love us enough to see us.”

Holy shit. This story was bleak AF. It was sad. It was beautiful. It made me cry. Boy did it make me cry. This one is going to be a fan favorite and goodness it deserves all the love it’s going to get.

Oh and the notes at the end that explain each story? ALWAYS a 10/10 for me!

This book releases on April 8th but is available for preorder now. I have a feeling this collection is going to make a lot of top lists this year and I’m totally here for it!!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever publicly slapped five stars on one of Judith’s books, but here they are, and they’re gleaming!

Fresh off my recovery tour from The Home, a little bat from the depths of hell dropped Sonnet’s upcoming collection of quiet horror in my lap. I eyed it wearily, having been bit by this unassuming beast before & said why not? Because fuck my beauty sleep. Who needs rest, relaxation, happy thoughts, or a sense of security whatsoever amirite? Sonnet has taken us, the innocent hitchhiker, on a ride through every tenet of horror: she has scared us shitless; shocked us speechless; & disgusted us senseless. Well, with “Terror! Horror! Agony!” she looked in her rearview mirror, saw our mangled body still twitching, circled back & decided she wanted to make us remember what fear tastes like.

This collection features stories about: a motel room that holds one too many secrets; to teenagers that didn’t listen to an urban legend & ended up becoming part of the lore; A nightmare of a new neighbor; to a frighteningly-beautiful case of Deja vu in a museum; A pair of strange bedfellows; to the horrors kids see that adults don’t, until its far too late.

In a flooded market where extreme is being done to death, it’s satisfying to be genuinely terrified by a story again. Sonnet has stated that extreme isn’t doing it for her right now, so she’s pivoting to what is: quiet horror. Yet her quiet is still very…not quiet. Quiet like the sound of your front door opening in the middle of the night, or someone else laughing at a joke on TV but you live alone? THAT SHIT. Sonnet crafts stories in this collection that stabs an ice pick in your brain, snaps it off, & leaves nightmare-inducing fragments behind. Her work has always been frightening, but it truly feels like she’s found a new groove once she refocused her direction/energy. Sonnet is tapping into some otherworldly levels of terror on April 8th, & I just need to know…who pissed her off??

Every story in here was a treat. Judith Sonnet writes phenomenal stories. It doesn't matter if it's Splatterpunk, Extreme Horror or Quiet Horror like in this collection. I really hope she will never stop writing all of it.

No one does it quite like Judith Sonnet does it. And I don’t think anyone ever will! I was given the opportunity to be an arc reader for this collection of quiet horror, and initially I was unsure how I would feel because I am a pretty stereotypical horror lover who goes for more extreme work. What can I say? I’m a sucker for gore and boundary pushing. This was nothing of that sort, and had me completely questioning my expectations for horror, because this collection of short stories absolutely delivered in every aspect without the overboard blood and guts we as horror lot fans expect. I was also SUPER surprised that Judith Sonnet had me laughing my ass off with one of the stories, I’m not sure if she will write more comedic material in the future but I surely hope she does. I would recommend this to any and everyone who enjoys a fright and is looking for something that feels fresh, new, and authentic.

There are horror authors, and then there is Judith Sonnet. Judith may be known (mostly) for her Splatterpunk books (and don't worry splatter folks you get a little small taste in this collection), but T.H.A. is about to change all of that. Sonnet delivers a unique collection buried in creepy creatures, strange beings, and obscure characters and entities. However, these tales run deeper than ghost stories and creature features. Every aspect of this book is different. No one story is similar, and that is very hard to do.

To quote Wrath James White in the forward, "This is punk rock putting down the electric guitar in exchange for an acoustic one."

That's exactly what this book feels like. I envision Layne Stanley of Alice In Chains on MTV Unplugged, unplugged but still gritty.
Here are some of my favs.

Graveyard Dirt
The first story in the collection is one Judith mentions as being inspired by her thoughts on death and a cemetery from her childhood. Graveyard Dirt taps into the nostalgic child in all of us. I was immediately reminded of being 12 and wandering through old cemeteries in Georgia. This was one of those that made me feel like a kid again, sitting in my room on a gloomy day reading Goosebumps and hiding from the world.

Opposition
This story is political and juggles the current state of the world and society. It's very creative and thought-provoking. I have often wondered about things like this so it was nice to see this idea fleshed out by an incredible author.

The Christ
This was an interesting short, another thought-provoking tale touching on society, religion and science. The ending was very unexpected and unique. I had a nice chuckle.

Cold Pocket
Creepy AF!! Another shortie that reminded me of Goosebumps/Are You Afraid of the Dark. I read this one while it was dreary, and it was a perfect ghost story with a bit of an urban legend vibe. I will think twice before swimming in the lake this summer.

The Healing Room
Holy shit! This one was wild and very different than most. It stood out as a strange and unsettling depiction of trauma and the supernatural world. This one freaked me out and got me thinking. It was one of the freakiest in the collection.

It Wasn't A Squonk!
Here's where we get a little taste of some old-school, urban legend-style splatterpunk. The gore is nice and well-delivered. I had fun reading about the Squonk!!

Infinite Yarn
Another creative story with a very cool twist! I don't want to say too much on this one, but it was kinda Twilight Zone meets a Lovecraftian fantasy.

There is an Aesop's Fables vibe throughout the whole stack. These aren't just short stories; they are cautionary legends about humanity, society, life, religion, politics, and what it means to be human. This is a collection everyone should check out, not only for how damn good this book is but also for how inspiring and intricate it is. Terror! Horror! Agony! is a multifaceted rag doll woven with every aspect of classic horror. Hats off to Judith for showing a side everyone will want to see more of sooner rather than later.
5 stars.
PS: There was a Slipknot reference, and that was awesome.

I am absolutely loving the direction Judith has been going with her last few releases, don't get me wrong, I haven't read a bad one yet, but between The Home, and this one, this is shaping up to be a fantastic year in books, and we just got started.

This had 10 Amazing stories in it, but I had a few favorites.

The Healing Room

One of my top things in horror is isolation, but more than that, give me a fucked up motel, please, there is something about being in a place, to rest, and relax, but everyone and everything is a stranger, and that's just speaking of normal motels.

How do you even deal with one where people are popping up and disappearing randomly, and what if your next?? It keeps you off balance, and not prepared to del with anything, I loved this little story.

Infinite Yarn

I don't tear up often, I swear, but this one got me, and I did not see it coming.

When this starts up, the way the MC talks about herself, absolutely tugs at my heart, and I just wanted to be their friend, and then we meet Claudia, who seems so amazing, but that knitting..

I read this on my ereader, and according to the display I had 3 pages left in this story when I really broke, it was horrifying but shattered me into a million pieces.
When I realized what had happened, stripping away the horror part, I felt a bittersweet sadness, but I also smiled a little.

I'm going to shut up before I ruin this for everyone.

Today is release day for this, and I will be picking up a hard copy asap, and hopefully get it signed this year!

Judith’s latest offering is a collection of tales dubbed as “quiet horror” by the author herself and that is the most apt description for this book. The stories here are unassuming. They don’t bombard you, they don’t assault you. Instead, they “quietly” whisper and settle beneath your skin. You will feel these stories. Not in the way Judith’s usual splatterpunk might make your stomach churn, but in ways you might not expect. The horror here is always shifting, always something else. Sometimes a ghostly voice from a grave, other times an echo from a past life captured in stone.

Judith really surprised me with this book. There were so many instances where I thought a story was going to take a certain path and I was happily surprised to find that Judith had instead chosen to tread down an unmarked trail that I hadn’t known was even there. “Cold Pocket”, “The Healing Room” and “The Last Alcoholic on Earth” were the standouts for me, but there is not one lacking story here.

This is Judith being quiet in the loudest way possible and I am here for it!

Judith Sonnet has categorized the stories in this collection as "Quiet Horror", and I was not sure what that was. Having just finished this excellent book, if this is "Quiet Horror", I definitely want more!
These stories were creepy and fantastic and I was sorry to see them end. I was intrigued by the explanations she wrote for the stories at the end of the book as it put them on a much more personal level. This is my second book by her, The Home being the first, and I will certainly be searching out more of her books to read!

Exceptional collection of stories, more "quiet horror" than much of her earlier work. But these tales still pack a punch.
Judith Sonnet is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, so it goes without saying:
Highly recommended.

I can honestly say I enjoyed every story in this collection. I love the different directions Judith has been going in with her writing.

It is extremely difficult for me to choose a favorite. I really enjoyed "Graveyard Dirt," "It Wasn't a Squonk!" "Opposition," and "The Healing Room." I also loved "Infinite Yarn" (I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING!) and "The Last Alcoholic on Earth" for entirely different reasons.

There isn't a bad story in the bunch, and I think there is something here for everyone.

The first book I read by Judith Sonnet was No One Rides For Free (which seemed more shock value than story). I’m pleasantly surprised at how far her writing and story telling has come. I’ll be reading more by Sonnet!
Some standouts for me were The Squonk and Infinite Yarn.

Judith Sonnet’s “Terror! Horror! Agony! A Collection of (Mostly) Quiet Horror…”:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This collection was such a different read for me, and I mean that in the best way! Each story has its own unique vibe, and I loved that none of them felt quite the same. Judith Sonnet does a great job creating unsettling, quiet horror; there’s a creeping tension that really pulls you in without relying on big scares. Perfect if you’re looking to switch things up and want something a little out of the ordinary. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants horror that feels fresh and quietly haunting.

Terror! Horror! Agony! Whew, what an amazing book! From the fantastic foreword to the notes at the end, I ate every bit of this up! I felt pulled into every story and every character. I'm really not good with reviews. I leave great writing for great authors. But this side of Judith Sonnets writing needs to be talked about!
I was creeped out. I laughed, was sacred, and I cried! I can't even choose a favorite story because I loved them all in their own way. I'm here for this side of Sonnet. I'm excited about what's to come. This is a book I will definitely read again and again.

So well written!

I've read a book or two from Judith Sonnet, but I felt like her talent really shined through in these little quiet horror stories. The characters, the subtle tension, the unease, it all just flowed so well. Sometimes when reading indie books it's easy to come across some less than perfect dialog or generally clunky writing that can take you out of the story for even the briefest moment. That never happened with me while reading this. The interactions felt natural, the stories were interesting, and the pacing was good. I enjoyed this read!

Judith Sonnet is such a versatile horror writer. From Splatter punk to extreme down to her more subtlety terrifying quiet horror stories. These slowly creep up on you and even the stories you may not have enjoyed as much as the others float back into your thoughts and make you feel an unknown unease.

very enjoyable collection of short stories. They range from weird to gory, and even some I wouldn't consider horror per se.

and personally, I don't think I've grasped the concept of "quiet horror" very well as a sub genre. To me, the introduction contradict some of the stories here, and not just once

But overall, pretty much worth the read.
