Straight Guys #16

Just a Bit Crushed

Rate this book
Cameron Richter has everything exactly the way he likes it.

He's a Formula One World Champion. He has money, fame, respect—and absolutely no patience for spoiled rich kids who know nothing about racing. Like Scott Palmer, the ridiculously wealthy, ridiculously handsome American heir Cam is forced to tolerate as a VIP guest.

Scott has never met anyone he couldn't charm—until now. And the more Cam glares at him, insults him, and acts as though Scott is the most annoying person on the planet, the more Scott wants to get under his skin.

Cam wasn't supposed to become his obsession. Scott is into pretty twinks, not bossy, homophobic straight men who could bench press him without breaking a sweat.

Except their mutual dislike quickly turns into an irresistible attraction, one that could destroy Cam's career—and might be the only wreck he can’t walk away from…

Review:

Just a book about 2 men who become obsessed with each other, and I am all here for it. I swear AH writes literal dopamine and crack into her stories because I just consume them and am left wanting for more.

I was actually surprised with how much I enjoyed Scott and Cam. They both have prejudiced issues, they both struggle, and they both become so stupidly inafuated, fixated, and besotted with each other. Only wish the angst had been more and their inner conflicts properly addressed and developed. Ending felt too rushed.

Now as usual, I reread all my favorites and let that sustain me until the next AH comes out.

No one does possessive obsessive attraction like Alessandra Hazard. The world just falls away and all the two main characters see is each other 🥰.
“We just click, you know? I like being around him. It feels—good. Right.”

Cam doesn't know why he is drawn to Scott when he's typically very uncomfortable with gay men. He doesn't want to be homophobic, but he's never had a gay friend before and doesn't conduct himself well around Scott. To be fair, he doesn't conduct himself particularly well around anyone- Cam is a grouchy, sensitive, moody person at the best of times. He also dislikes Scott for being a privileged ponce who was born into wealth. So naturally, the best way to maintain their friendship is to put Cam through gay exposure therapy 🤣. It starts with cuddling on the couch, and quickly escalates to brojobs and sending dickpicks.
With Cam, it felt different. He was different. Special. His. His friend.

The two men are in an unenviable friends with benefits situation where one of them is deeply closeted and struggling with his sexuality, and the other is grappling with long-founded personal beliefs about what it means to be 'acceptably gay' in society. While the book focuses on the attraction and obsession Cam and Scott have with each other, I do think they each have specific areas of personal growth that they need to engage in to further their relationship. But how can 2 men in the public eye hide their growing devotion for one another? When circumstances force them apart, it's up to them to decide what's worth fighting for, and if they are able to get each other go.
Something important had been ripped out of his life without warning. Something he couldn’t actually live without.

I really liked the book. AH is in a league of her own and while that inspires a lot of haters and negativity, I find her books very enjoyable to read. They won't be for everyone, but for me, any one of her books can cure a book slump instantly. She has a way of taking unlikeable homophobic jackasses and making them feel human. It's not easy for some people to change their entire worldview just because they meet a man who they develop an intense attraction to. Cam never intentionally hurts Scott while he's figuring out his sexuality. It's a bit frustrating that they REALLY take their time to really explore their friendship and physical connection before delving into emotional intimacy, but that's what makes the book so fun to read. If this was a real couple, I'd start following Formula 1 just to see more of them 💖.
"You’re never getting rid of me now.”
A slow smile spread across Cam’s face. “I was rather hoping I wouldn’t.”

ps: Hearing the 'straight' guy beg his friend to call him by his nicknames again rewired my brain 🥰.
Cam mouthed the back of his neck—practically chewed on it. “You used to call me—words. You don’t do it anymore.”
Scott frowned, confused. “Words—what—you mean endearments?” Silence was the only answer. Taking it for yes, Scott turned onto his back so he could see Cam’s face. “Really, babe?” he said, a smile tugging at his lips when he saw the color high on Cam’s cheekbones. He looped his arms around Cam’s neck. “You want me to call you baby? Darling? Love?”
Cam’s expression became pinched, but he didn’t say no.

Oh, I am glad I did not quit this author's books after not liking (including really not liking) her most recent books. But hope and all that, and I liked the first chapter, and yep, we are back, fan girl status reignited.

That is not to say this is a perfect book and I will find flaws (more later) but they are the kind of flaws I will overlook easily, and that I was expecting anyway (abrupt endings. AH just finishes books a couple chapters before other authors), but the emotions, all that lust addled smutty sweetness is oh, so worth it.

It's a formula 1 book, one leaning hard into the real sport, real teams and there is a real RPF feel to it (added to by there being some chapters with fan forum interactions or news) to move the story along, so it will likely be an extra treat to people in the fandom or who are into celebrity gossip and so on. I am not one of them, but I could overlook it easily enough, except for a complaint - not enough epilogue. An epilogue on the form of fan comments is incredibly non rewarding, I wanted to be in their heads for the intimacy, I wanted to see their HFN routine from at least one of their PoVs..

But still something I binged so hard and I smiled so much at, 5 stars. A comment, the blurb makes it sound more toxic, darker than it ended up being. The straight guy falls pretty hard and very sweetly way before he is even ready to acknowledge it, and it ended up being adorable mostly with some external homophobia for conflict.

The next book, two rival drivers here sounds potentially great.

Seriously, what does Alessandra Hazard put in her books, why can't I put this down?! Even though it's as simple and shallow as ever.🤪

Predictable? From the first page. Character growth? Virtually non-existent. Deep conversations? Are we talking about physical depth here? Real-world significance? What's that?

Somehow, it just flows so smoothly. It strikes the perfect balance between smut and angst—delivering just the right amount of heart-flutter and heart-ache. Her story has zero filler—every single plot point is tightly wound around the development of the MCs' relationship. And best of all? She never drowns me in endless, agonizing pages of internal monologue.

This is basically an electronic Big Mac🍔—cheap, fast, and it gets the job nicely done when you need it.😋

Tropes: grumpy/sunshine, hostility to friends to lovers
Feels: 3/5
Steam*: 3.5/5
Kinks: praise, feminization fetish, touch starved
Angst: low
HEA: HEA
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings/representation: internalized homophobia, homophobia, third act break up, unsafe sex
Cheating between MCs: No
Any other cheating: No
Other person drama: they were both hooking up off page with others until about 27%. They were interested in each other and still hooking up with others, which is an annoyance to me. It's kind of implied that they didn't hook up with others once they started hooking up.

4 stars

Scott is 28. He is a spoiled rich kid, who dresses well and likes to party. He's gay. He exclusively tops, but is that really what he wants? His dad is only okay with him being gay if he is presenting a certain image and isn't coming off as a sissy bottom. The dad is homophobic. Scott also works for his father's business and does charity work. But he also really enjoys a good time. He falls in love all the time, he has a new boyfriend almost every week.

Cam is 29. He is a formula One racer, and he's very successful. He's always identified as straight. His instinct is to be homophobic, but he wants to be better.

Cam meets Scott because he is pressured into giving him a tour. They clash at the start, but Scott is charming and Cam is weirdly fascinated by him. They keep running into each other at sports events and keep spending more and more time together and texting each other. And soon they are really close friends, really touchy feely friends. While this connection is being built, they're both hooking up with others, but they are both jealous. Then one night they get drunk and Scott ends up getting Cam off and that leads to more hookups, which become more mutual and personal as time goes on. They are both obsessed with each other, touch starved for each other, craving the other person's attention.

But then things go to s*** when Cam is nearly outed and cam has to step back for his career and Scott ends things. Which Cam doesn't take well, because he doesn't want it to end.

I didn't love the sex with others in this book. And Cam's homophobia was not attractive. I wish Scott had also had a moment where he stood up to his dad, cuz that plot line felt unfinished. But this was an Alessandra Hazard book, and the connection and intensity of feeling that they had for each other was really enjoyable. I am also weak for touch starved couples.

Some notable moments:

"Will was watching them like a hawk, something surprised in his expression. “Oh, right,” Scott said. “Will, meet Cam. Now excuse us, we have to—eh, talk.” And taking Cam’s arm, he dragged him away. Cam let him. Scott half-steered, half-pulled him into a room down the corridor before slamming the door shut and shoving Cam against it. The next moment, his mouth crashed against him, all tongue and teeth."

"It had been more than a month. More than a month without hearing Scotty’s warm laugh in person. More than a month of dry texts and unanswered messages and wondering whether Scott still gave a fuck. And now he was here. Actually here. Close enough to touch. Cam’s pulse kicked up. His first instinct was immediate and overwhelming. Find him. Talk to him. Ask him why he hadn’t told him he was coming. Ask him who the fuck Nico Laurent was and why he was putting his dirty paws all over Scotty’s body."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Cam & Scott

storywise nothing to write home about, BUT still kind of thrilling and intense on the feels. the very reason AHs books always feel like catnip and the only book recently i literally devoured.

the only thing that really irked me to no end (but that’s a general ick of mine) and as if calling an asshole pussy isn’t bad enough most of the time, calling pecs boobs and tits is not floating my boat at all. *lol

otherwise it was gloriously smutty, hot and desperate as always. 🔥

Not one of my favorites from this series but still a fun time! I needed more from their connection to really feel it. Incredibly rushed. It’s very apt that this book is about an F1 driver because we were racing to the finish line.😩 Scott and Cam have plenty of chemistry. I feel like I’m grading an essay writing in the margins of this smut book being like expand on that but yes, expand on that!🤭 But truth be told some of my favorites in this series are the most hated and the ones I hate are the ones everyone loves. Your mileage may vary! Still liked this. Still could read a billion more installments in this series.😁

God, I hate to do this to a Hazard book - I haven't 3 starred a book of hers in literal years and it was long ago in this series - and actually they were 3.5 ratings so this is the lowest for me which says a lot - (that I hope still never ends) - but...part of this frustrated me too much to give it a trusted 4 stars, which I will give her books which are solid, but a little more formulaic of her style instead of reaching that top tier status that a few of her books reach for me.

When I read a Hazard book, I know what I'm getting into at this point - that's not the problem. For me, it was more the author kind of cutting off and cutting out the elements that usually make her books *so good* - which yes, in large part is the sex.

We do get some, but early on in their situationship, we barely even get *anything* and it's almost all fade to black? Which is SO unlike this author that it was baffling the fuck out of me. Like she has her MC's have sex a LOT and it's FUN and yeah she doesn't always write out every time they're fucking like bunnies, but we have some GOOD sex scenes around their first time, as they get more and more obsessed...

We didn't really get that here. Their first penetrative sex scene, Scott was bottoming for the first time, but he felt a bit detached? I mean, he loved it but I didn't feel that. He was thinking about how it felt a bit strange but he kind of liked it but did he love it? Mostly he was loving being used like a sex doll for Cam and the thought of kind of being a toy for him was what was getting him off.

It didn't entirely work for me, I don't know, I just didn't click with that. Then we got to the next chapter and like only a page is dedicated to expressing how obsessed Scott is now getting with bottoming. It wasn't enough, it was SO rushed.

And even outside the sex - I liked these two, but it was SO rushed. I felt like one minute they were talking and the next they were obsessed. Which, happens plenty with this author, but I felt like I blinked and they were already there without a lot of build up. It was a bit jarring, and then the sex comes along and we barely get any of it.

I think Scott and Cam had the good bones of past relationships this author has excelled at, but she struggled filling in the gaps to make them really perfect the way she has with couples in the past.

There has been, over time, a trend of Hazard writing very quick - hot and sexy, all the same, but quick - stories that don't always let the characters breathe. It's like go, go, go and a lot of the time, that works. And sometimes the chemistry is just enough to carry the perhaps lack of work at building that connection. And the sex is so well done and detailed and so well written that it carries a lot of the stories too.

I've always loved this and ate up her stories like crazy. But with this one, it was like she knew her formula but forgot to put the heart into it she usually has.

I liked Scott and Cam, and their chemistry was good, but wasn't great, and take away a lot of hot sex scenes that would have been SO hot and fun to read, and it really put a damper on this and I just, as I read, felt the sinking sensation of "oh no I'm going to have give this 3 stars" which I haven't done in FOREVER for Hazard.

Like...why are we skipping over Scott giving Cam blowjobs so much? Why the fuck was Cam eating Scott out completely fade to black? Why were we just told "and he fucked him thoroughly" and then that's IT?! Why?! We don't need every sex scene written out, yes, but when your brand is being known as an amazing sex scene writer and that they carry a lot of the story and plot (which isn't bad if written well, which Hazard does most of the time) and then you just skimp out on it, it's just like...what??? What happened here? All the time Hazard took to write this too and she got tired of writing sex all the sudden, it seems like?

Also I don't follow Nascar/Formula 1, all that stuff, so I had no idea what the jargon meant and we're never told. What does't P2, P8 mean? I assume Place 2 and 8 but it wasn't entirely clear. Why isn't it just called "2nd, 8th place" etc like usual? An explanation would have been nice.

Also it's such a large reason for drama in this, but why did the paps just go away? Cam's team paid off ONE of them, but nothing came of that - so that guy didn't fuck them over and release the photos anyway? Why? - and what, they were able to just go on for years without being hounded, followed, more pap pics taken? I was kind of waiting for them to be discovered and it all to blow up and it didn't.

But okay, they're keeping it secret from the public until Cam retires in a few years - it would have been nice to SEE that in the epilogue, him finally coming out with Scott at his side, but instead the epilogue is just a pretend social media post with pretend comments from fans? That's IT?! That was the epilogue? I was sooo disappointed.

Like this gets points for having the bones, the structure of a Hazard book, and I did enjoy Cam and Scott together a lot, the few bonding scenes we did get showed a great connection between them. The chemistry was there, if not as good as usual with this author. I wouldn't have minded more exploration of their kinks with each other, and those few instances of them were hot. It would take a lot more for me to give lower than 3 stars with this author, for sure. But the essence was missing from this. It just felt like Hazard needed to get a book out and followed her own formula without putting her heart into it.

It's disappointing, and I really, really hope her next book is up to par with her usual wonderful writing.

I've read her at her best and this is just not that. I would wait a long while even if this author needed time to find her heart again, to get back that thing she has that makes her books magic and so, so fun and hot and sexy.

Because this was just not it, unfortunately.

I feel bad for Cam and Scott, because in the past this author would have done them better justice than this.

*sigh* Until the next one, which I hope I can be very happy about after reading.

These books are like catnip and so fast to read. I got an email this morning about this book’s release and got it right then. I pretty much finished it in one sitting. A real page turner!

The chemistry of these two characters was so very hot!Cam tried to play it cool but he was SO into Scott it was laughable at times and tbh vice versa.

I guess I’ll never give up on this series which can be problematic at times but still so entertaining.

We won’t leave the formula 1 universe in the next installment either. I’m here for it!

I’ve had an internal debate with myself and just decided it is perfectly ok to give every book by Alessandra Hazard five stars. There is no one that writes as addictive books as this. I’m on freaking vacation and couldn’t put this down. Please!

This had everything: opposites attract, forbidden, angst, pining, obsession, cuddling, etc… I can’t 😩 Fun with F1 setting! My first so far…

That was a short, entertaining, but ultimately really shallow read. It had all the classic Hazard tropes and two MCs who are just obsessed with each for no good reason. The sex is hot, if a bit randomly sprinkled in there, but the emotional landscapes of our leads is not well-explored at all. So okay, yes, I did enjoy the book but I felt really unsatisfied at the end.

I didn't hate it but equally I didn't love it.
The we're not in a relationship but spending all their time together. The I'm not gay but having sex repeatedly with another man. The it's not special and absolutely losing it when they break up. Yeah.

What annoyed the most was dragging other people into their undefined mess. Because they're 'not in a relationship, both Cam and Scott felt they had to prove it by flirting with others or ignoring those they're on a date with. They didn't seem to realise that they were always prioritising their 'friendship' over romantic partners. It was disrespectful.

"he’d heard someone say that true love wasn’t selfish, that if you genuinely loved someone, their happiness and well-being mattered more than your own" Scott musing.

Didn't like Captivated, didn't fancy Guarded and indifferent to Crushed. Let's see if Toxic out in 2027 about two F1 drivers who clearly are infatuated with each other but presenting as adversaries, will get me more enthusiastic about new installments to the series.

I really wanted to love this, but I didn’t compared to others. As always, I really like the possessiveness and codependency Alessandra is able to weave within her books. The problem is why did Scott & Cam make it everyone’s problem 😬. I can count like 3 people who had to be used to showcase how much both characters want each other and that made me feel icky. I wanted a bit more exploration of their sexual chemistry and emotional connection. I felt like there was potential but it ultimately fell flat. Also, from reading Wills book, he was so out of character in this, I didn’t even realize it was the same from the previous book.

Hi, I'm a bi guy, and english is my 2nd language, expect mistakes.

So
I love this series, just a bit obsessed was my introduction to MM romance back in 2022, and this series has a very special place in my heart, so I'm not joking when i say this was a super anticipated project for me
But nonetheless
I have to be honest
This is my 2nd dnfed Alessandra Hazard book in a row
This one was a roller coaster and not the fun kind, the one from the final destination kind.

This book takes very unnecessary turns and gives you even more unnecessary prompts that no one ever asked for, such as the weird introduction of the feminization into the dynamic, simply because Scott has some well built and well pronounced pecs? And to buy him a bra out of all things when it wasn't even a discussion between you two? Don't get me started on the fact that Cam kept saying "your TITs are better than women's", like you have to put women down just to prove you're attracted to man boobs? Really dude?

Then to complete the shitty sundae with a cherry on top, we have Scott being a transphobic bird over some straight dick.

There's a scene where they were invited to a party in support of the lgbtq
And Cam went as an ally with Scott
Scott immediately left cam alone to go and talk to some big shot celebrity who is his usual type aka twinks (it was Gabriel, my least favorite MMC in this series)
And cam went "well, maybe we do need to hookup with different people", cause the line between their friendship kept getting crossed and he starts talking to a lady
Which resulted in Scott having a hissy fit and being an asshole

Read this section:

“We were kind of in the middle of a conversation,” Annie said pointedly.
Scott gave her a smile that was nowhere near as charming as his usual ones.
“Were you,” he said, his smile all teeth. “Did you tell him you were trans, sweetheart?”
Cam blinked at him. What?
He looked back at Annie, who was blushing and glaring daggers at Scott. “It’s hardly relevant, is it? I’m a woman.”
“Sure,” Scott said easily. “And a stunning one. But I’d hate for you to waste your time. He’s allergic to dick, no matter how pretty you are.”

Like what?
Not only he outs her, he also shames her for being trans
Like believe me girl, dick is never that good to make you act this foolish
He then also is pretty misogynistic to a cis woman who tries to have conversations with Cam, a twink is interested in him and Scott rejects him and excuses it with "i can't leave my friend, Cam here" and the twink propositions a foursome with one of his female friends and Scott says something in the realm of "she might have herpes".. like ok miss girl Misogyniana.

Also, their sexual dynamics goes down like the IQ in MAGAs right after the Tits scene
Their first Anal scene was just.. bad
Prep took 2 fingers, the dirty talk was as good as just a bit gay (another book with an unexpected and unwelcome feminization trope that had some of her worst dirty talk) and it was as robotic and cheap as a tesla invention.
Just a word salad ready to be thrown out.

I don't know what is going on with miss Hazard
But her work has been really Hazardous since Forbidden
And that's very disappointing
It's like she lost her passion for writing and that's very upsetting, now she just writes just to write.

Edit: i edited this, it was originally made around 3 am and i wasn't as awake as i thought. Some more infos added and some parts got edited (hopefully for the better, cause grammar is my 2nd biggest enemy behind Nyla K). Happy reading.

The gratuitous mysogyny is so strange especially because it would be useless info such as cam saying random stuff he finds pretty in scott is somehow better than most girls? what happened to he's so gorgeous, why do women have to be brought down?
this book has that "wait till the last chapter to confess/realise you have feeling" which I love but my lord the mysogyny was just jarring and I couldn't give anything more. nothing to say on the plot because if you read hazard you know she has no real plot and it's just 2 codependent men trying to justify their codependency instead of seeking professional help and I'm not complaining about that. i know what I'm reading but I didn't sign up for mysogyny.

Cam is a grumpy and lowkey homophobic formula one driver, but when he meets Scott, Scott is unbothered. Scott insists Cam isn’t his type, yet proposes that Cam have some “exposure therapy” to make him less homophobic! What a genius plan! They become fast friends… and that turns into more.

This book has:
-“straight” formula one driver x billionaire heir
-secret relationship
-MCs that are assholes
-Rome and Luca cameo (my faves!)

I swear to goodness, there’s some addictive drug in Hazard’s writing. Every time she writes something new, I devour it instantly. It’s like fast food: though I can’t say the actually quality of the story or even the characters is good (in this case), the books are quick, addicting, and bingeable.

Like, in this book, both characters are homophobic and misogynistic, and even transphobic in one case. They’re selfish and honestly don’t have any qualities that make you like them as people. But that’s not the point of the book. The point of the book is the drama and that “forbidden” feeling that Hazard seems to capture so well. Because of this, I still enjoyed the book quite a bit!

I think I’ve read her entire catalogue and will continue to do so as she drops more. Super addictive writing for SURE!

Alessandra Hazard has done it again. Obsessive? ✅ Codependent? ✅ Clingy? ✅ Sign me ALL the way up.

This book felt like an unexpected birthday present... and it wasn't even my birthday. I had so much fun reading this.

That said, there was one thing that gave me the biggest ick. I'd somehow forgotten that queer people can be homophobic, so thanks for the reminder, Alessandra. That scene where Scott outed the trans woman and insulted the cis woman irritated me instantly. It felt completely unnecessary, even if he was acting out of jealousy.

Aside from that, though? I had an absolute blast.

I said the last book I read was going to be my final read for July turns out I lied. 😂 And honestly, what a way to end the month.

I just needed more from these boys. Give me the cute dates! Give me the domestic fluff! Richter won in the end, but I'll take whatever crumbs I can get.

Overall, I had so much fun with this one...

[3.75⭐]. ME GUSTÓ.

RAWR.

I have no idea what type of crack she puts in her books, but whatever she does she needs to keep doing

DNF at 55%. This book started very bland for me; the conversations were incredibly surface-level, and there wasn't much chemistry between the mmcs. However, it did pick up probably around the 30% mark, when they started to recognize their feelings and that something more than physical was going on.

But what I will not tolerate is a woman being so misogynistic while idolizing gay men. Cameron is supposed to be this homophobic dude while Scott is an openly gay man who's obviously had his share of struggle for being queer. That being said, I was reading about them attending a party to "support the lgbtq cause in sports", and it was there that Scott outed a trans woman just because she was talking to Cameron and then accused another woman of herpes because the twink he was flirting with suggested that they have a foursome.

I'll leave you the quotes just in case you don't want to read the whole thing:

“We were kind of in the middle of a conversation,” Annie said pointedly. Scott gave her a smile that was nowhere near as charming as his usual ones. “Were you,” he said, his smile all teeth. “Did you tell him you were trans, sweetheart?” Cam blinked at him. What? He looked back at Annie, who was blushing and glaring daggers at Scott. “It’s hardly relevant, is it? I’m a woman.” “Sure,” Scott said easily. “And a stunning one. But I’d hate for you to waste your time. He’s allergic to dick, no matter how pretty you are.”

“I’ve changed my mind—I don’t want to do it,” he said, his expression tight. “Who knows if they’re even clean! It’s unsanitary and dangerous—pretty sure there was herpes on her lip under all that red lipstick.” Cam stared at him. “Was there.” Scott nodded with a sullen look, his stunning eyes flashing with dislike. “Why do you need to fuck some chick anyway? You have m—”

I'm sorry, but that's enough to know this is not for me. I cannot stand when female authors who exclusively write MLM feel the need to make women inferior, dirty, insufficient, a replacement, and a long list of other things to justify a gay relationship. If you're so bigoted that you cannot write decent female characters, then don't.
