Detective Sergeant Bec Harpin loved her little home on the mountain, not worrying about the daily commute into Melbourne, but the night a friend, barrister Carolyn Moorhouse, called her, asking her to come to her office immediately, Bec didn't hesitate. This time the drive seemed longer than usual, but when Bec arrived, and was confronted by Carolyn's distraught assistant, and a dead body lying between them on the floor, Bec was stunned. Why hadn't Carolyn called the police? Did she even know the woman she'd called friend for many years?

When police were called to a small unit in suburban Melbourne by a neighbour, they were shocked to see an elderly woman bound and gagged in a chair, dead. Doreen was a well loved neighbour, quiet and unassuming, and in a nearby unit, actor Nikki Cardone was shattered by Doreen's death. With Bec being transferred to Doreen's death as she was too close to the Moorhouse crime, she and her two offsiders - Wendy and Shaun - worked hard to come up with answers. It seemed the more they searched, the more questions they had...

One Night is the 2nd in A Bec Harpin Crime Series by Aussie author Rozzi Bazzani and I enjoyed the detailed plot, the twists and intrigue, which spread to Sydney as well as around Melbourne and the nearby countryside. Recommended.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read and review.

And new are back with DS Bec Harpin for what will be a great crime story, I am sure, I really like Bec she has been through so much and now she has been offered a six month maternity leave position in homicide and Bec is keen to prove that she is a good cop, will she get the answers that are needed for her first case?

Detective Sergeant Bec Harpin is keen to be back on the job but when she takes a call from one of her best friends this could turn everything upside down when she arrives to help Barrister Carolyn Morehouse at her offices and finds a dead body, firstly why on earth did Carolyn call her without calling the police first and then secondly is her friend covering something up?

That same night the body of an older woman is found tied up and gagged in a small unit in the suburbs of Melbourne, Bec is at first pulled from the Carolyn Morehouse case as she is classed with being too close and put on this second case, Bec and her team start investigating and one of the persons that they think might have answers is a neighbour and actor Nikki Cardone but getting clear answers from Nikki is not always easy.

Then Bec is put back on the Carolyn Morehouse case and has two case to solve and the more she investigates the more the clues add up to them both being linked, but will Nikki put a spanner in the works of their investigation, will they catch the killer and work out the why and the how?

This is a great story that had me turning the pages, filled with twists as Bec and her team uncover what happened and go after the culprit, there are many great characters in this story, Nikki added a lot to it, she was determined to get her justice as well, Bec worked hard to prove to her new boss that she is very good at her job and she also has things to work out in her private life, this is one that I do highly recommend to any reader who loves a good crime story that will pull you in, I loved it and I do hope that there are more DS Bec Harpin stories to come.

My thanks to the author for my digital copy to read and review.

An urgent call for help from her friend, barrister Carolyn Moorhouse, finds Detective Sergeant Bec Harpin involved in a new case of murder and theft.
Bec rushes to help but Carolyn’s behaviour soon has her questioning their friendship. Worse still, information she uncovers threatens to jeopardise her career.
Two suspicious deaths and two separate investigations are seemingly unrelated, but as Bec and her team piece together the facts, it becomes evident they are linked.
Actress Nikki Cardone is a key character with her own story to tell - a story that eventually helps to bring the pieces of the puzzle together.
Fans of great crime fiction will love this second Bec Harpin story. A clever plot with interwoven storylines see the mystery unravel at a steady and satisfying pace.
Highly recommended.

When Detective Sergeant Bec Harpin receives an urgent call from her friend, high-profile barrister Carolyn Moorhouse, she has no idea she’s about to step into the most complex case of her career—one that could jeopardise everything she’s worked for. On the same night, a body is found bound and gagged in suburban Melbourne, drawing Bec and her team into two investigations that may not be as separate as they seem.

As layers of truth and deception unravel, another key player emerges—Nikki Cardone, a neighbour and actor with secrets of her own. With justice, loyalty, and personal truth all hanging in the balance, One Night explores just how far someone will go to protect a friend… or to conceal the truth.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from One Night as it falls outside my usual reading genre, but I was hooked from the very first page. Rozzi Bazzani writes with an engaging, confident style that immediately pulls you in. Just when you think you’ve figured it all out, another twist turns everything on its head. The plot is richly layered but incredibly easy to follow—complex without being confusing, suspenseful without being overwhelming.

Bec and Nikki are both compelling, flawed, and driven in their own ways, and I found myself racing through the pages to find out how their paths would intersect—and whether both women would survive the truth.

A brilliant, suspenseful read that kept me guessing the whole way through. Highly recommended for fans of crime fiction, strong female leads, and intelligent storytelling.

A heartfelt thank you to Rozzi Bazzani for the gifted digital and hardcopy versions in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Sergeant Rebecca Harpin is drawn unwittingly into a compromising situation when a friend calls asking for her help. Rebecca arrives at a crime scene which has been unreported to police by her friend, Carolyn, a prominent Melbourne barrister, and Rebecca (Bec) is left to explain to her superiors what she is doing there.

So begins a story involving theft, fraud, deception and murder. Bec and her colleagues, fellow detectives Shaun and Wendy, are meticulous in tracking down clues into two suspicious deaths, while at the same time Bec is baffled by Carolyn’s strange behaviour. A beautiful actress and the unfathomable (to me) world of crypto currency become pieces of the puzzle snd Bec, Shaun and Wendy have to work hard to fit it all together.

On the personal side Josh, the man Bec had stopped seeing when she saw him with someone else, reappears. Bec is completely caught up with her investigation and doesn’t know if she can, or if she wants to, make time to let him back into her life.

Good crime stories are distinguished by the strength and individuality of their characters and by the settings in which they are placed. Rozzi Bazzani’s are based in the state of Victoria and this one has the cafe culture of Melbourne, the peace and quite of a mountain getaway and the beautiful beaches of the coast.

Where will Bec Harpin turn up next?

I loved One Night so much! It hooked me from the first line and I absolutely devoured it! A great mystery (that I couldn’t unravel) and wonderful characters. It was twisty and just evolved so beautifully and carried me along. I think it’s her best book so far. The pacing was spot on and the setting and intrigue were so compelling I relished every moment of reading it. Such a great ending, it kept getting more and more tense, I didn’t want it to end. And Nikki - wow she started as a pain and then became so heroic and kick arse I loved her! A great story, highly recommended.
