When I met Evan, he was everything I never thought I could have—steady, kind, the kind of man who made me believe in something more. But one reckless night changed everything. By the time I found out I was pregnant, he was gone, and I had every reason to believe he’d never come back.
For fourteen years, I built a life for my daughter, protecting her, providing for her, never letting myself wonder what if. Evan was a stranger from my past, a man whose wealthy family could take everything from me if they ever found out. But then he showed up in my small town—stronger, haunted, and completely unaware of the little girl who carried his eyes. And the moment he looks at her, I know the truth will come out.
I wanted to keep my distance. I told myself he only cared because of Sophia, that he’d never really wanted me. But every look, every touch, every moment together makes it harder to deny the truth.
Because Evan Mercer wasn’t just the man I lost. He was The One Who Changed Everything.

Each book in this series is wonderful, but I think this one is my favourite!
Tara Grace Ericson highlights accepting God’s grace for our mistakes and forgiving ourselves in the process. It wasn’t easy for Evan Mercer and Samantha Brown, and it won’t be easy for us, either. Thankfully, we don’t have to do it alone. There’s provision made when we want to rewrite our narrative.
I appreciated the reminder that God’s timing is perfect and our choices affect others, as much as I appreciated the visual Ericson’s words created of a tug-of-war between fear and love. Fear prevents us from experiencing what God has planned for us; there’s so much more on the other side of fear. Samantha learns this firsthand.
Which side wins? You’ll have to read to find out.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I've been eagerly anticipating getting the chance to read The One Who Changed Everything ever since finishing, The One Who Risked It All. The teaser cliffhanger that introduced Evan and Samantha's story had me hooked, and let me tell you this beautiful story did not disappoint.
Evan and Samantha's story is a second chance romance, and it was everything I could have hoped for. A beautiful send off to the Second Chance Fire Station series, this wonderful clean romance has so much heart, and so many swoon worthy moments it would honestly be hard to pick a favorite.
Samantha never thought she'd see Evan again. When she discovers she's pregnant, she's determined to give her daughter a better life than the one she had growing up, and is even more determined to make it on her own. When Evan shows up in her small town, she can't believe what she's seeing-after all she's finally built a stable and secure life for her and her daughter, and now the one person has appeared who has the potential to send it all crumbling away. Evan can't believe he's finally found Samantha after all these years, but he's not sure he's prepared to handle the secret she's been keeping from him all along. Can these two ever find their way to happily ever after when so much is stacked against them?
I'm still relatively new to Tara Grace Ericson's stories, but I truly love her writing style and definitely now count her as one of my favorites. I love how much heart she puts into each of her stories, and I love how the faith element is always so effortlessly and authentically woven throughout each one. Evan and Samantha's story was one that I had a hard time wanting to put down, and I loved how much maturity and growth they both portray over the course of the story.
I had a feeling I was going to enjoy this one, but it even surprised me just how much I did so. Definitely one of my favorite reads of the year, and one that I will be definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys clean romances and/or faith based romances.
Final Rating: 5/5.
Thanks so much to Tara Grace Ericson for allowing me to read and review this title!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the author as part of her street team. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and this is my honest review.
4.5 stars This was so touching and sweet. The One Who Changed Everything is the final book in Tara Grace Ericson’s Second Chance Fire Station series. I was so excited to read this one after reading the other books and it was so good! Samantha was complicated and I felt for her as she tried to make sense of her life. She was doing her best to carry for her daughter, Sophia. Evan had made some mistakes in the past and he was learning to reconcile his life. I liked getting to know them both. It was so touching to read about Samantha and Evan reconnecting. They both had guilt and fear that had ruled their lives. I love the way that Ericson showed their growth and how they learned to trust God. There were some struggles as they figured out what it would look like to co-parent and see if they could let go of past hurts. I loved the progression of their relationship and how they both learned to heal. It was fun to see old characters again. I also adored Evan’s relationship with Sophia. It was so sweet to read. Sophia was a lot of fun too. The storyline was interesting and I didn’t want to put the book down. I would totally recommend The Who Changed Everything. The One Who Changed Everything is a clean Christian romance. I received a complimentary copy
Tara Grace Ericson penned The One Who Changed Everything, a tale of loss, fear, mistrust, and hope. Samantha Brown, a lead Librarian at the Public Library in Minden, finally trusted the security of her life. As a single-mom, she worked hard and loved her little girl, Sophia, every day. After being in love and having one night together, which was interrupted by a fire, Samantha felt as if she had received a gift for her daughter’s life. After thirteen years alone, when Evan Mercer entered Minden, her fears and hopes crashed around her. Misinterpretations of the truth left a big hole in the center of both of their lives, however, only through prayer and faith could their hope and love be transformed and restored. The loss of his brother was a truth that he had never shared with Sam, a truth that she didn’t understand about why he had left. Though pain, suffering, and loss were being remembered, the recent understanding of the betrayal of a parent taught Evan to cut the ties and move forward. Evan fought to do all that he could to right the wrong that he had made. Little did they know it would be through a miracle and compassion that their lives would begin to mesh so that they could create a family. As Samantha, Evan, and Sophia began to jointly attempt to engage as a family, only then did their love shine so brightly that they could live in the grace that God provided every day. I loved this story, because as I watched Evan and Sam grow closer together and begin to reclaim the trust and love they once had. I also saw that they loved and supported their child, Sophia, through the health battles that she faced. With their faith, their family, and their friends they learned that love has no boundaries with the truth on their side. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars.
Sam works at a library in Minden (one of my favorite fictional small towns), and an accidental fire sends the fire department to make sure everyone is safe. What she's not expecting is to see her past show up to the rescue in the form of Evan, a one week (and night) stand from her younger years! Neither of them has any idea what transpired after "that night," which leads to the rest of the story!
While I'm not usually a fan of hidden pregnancy, the author made it completely work for this story! By the end, your heart goes out to all three of them! This is another one of those stories where you'll want to reach into the pages and wallop the jerk of a father! I'm just sayin'...
I really liked Sam's daughter because even though she's a young teenager, she's observant and a smart kiddo. As Sam tries to keep her distance from Evan, he's drawn to her just as much as he was years ago.
This is another story where I have strong feelings about Evan's father. Meddling parents, and not in the good way, make me want to pull my hair out! That's kudos to the author for getting me so worked up! On the flip side, I always want to cheer when the MMC stands up to the parent who has had such a negative impact on their child's life.
One of the many things I enjoyed about this story is that Evan, once he knew he was Sophia's dad, he really stepped up to the plate. I thought it was a good representation of how hard it must've been for all of them to integrate into a new family... that wasn't a family. After being a single mom, it's hard to let someone else help parent your child, even if it is the biological dad!
I'm sad this is the end of the series, but I hope we'll have the opportunity to go back to Minden!
The One Who Changed Everything is a second chance at love for then two college kids on spring break that fell in love in Florida. Now fourteen years later we see Samantha living a average single mother’s life in Minden raising Sophia. Sam is the librarian and lives in a decent apartment. One day when a lunch was over cooked in the microwave the fire department was called and who did Sam see but Evan. He came in later to talk to her hoping to apologize for what happened in Florida fourteen years ago. However, she is very business like not wanting to talk anything but about the library. Evan fills out a form to get a library card and Sam sees that he lives in the same apartment building. She becomes very scared that Evan will hear about Sophia.
Sophia has a very serious heart issue that makes her heart stop and it happened when she was at summer camp riding a horse. Evan had been asking around about Sophia after he heard someone say that was Sam ‘s daughter. The day she has the issue at camp Evan was there responding and was treating her on the way to the hospital. A couple of days later he waits on the steps outside Sam’s apartment to ask if Sophia was his daughter. She is physically and mentally exhausted from staying at the hospital with Sophia and when he asks her she tells him yes. She also tells him he will not take Sophia from her. Does Evan have any chance at getting back with Samantha or is she going to forever hold it against him that he never found her after returning back to school?
When Evan moved to Minden looking for a fresh start away from the associations of his family name, he never expected that fresh start to include finding the woman with whom he spent an unforgettable week before his world imploded. But she clearly hasn't forgiven him for never contacting her, and he soon realises she's hiding something... Samantha once hoped for the forever Evan seemed to be promising, but when he disappeared, she called herself a fool. And once she realised who his family was, she kept her secret out of fear. But now the past has caught up with her, will it destroy all she's built, or fulfil the promise she'd given up on?
This was hinted at the end of the previous book and caught my attention then - so when I realised how soon this was coming out, I was thrilled. And the story didn't disappoint. I loved getting to know both Evan and Samantha, and seeing them get a long-awaited second chance. While there have obviously been wrong things done in the past, it's clear that they've both changed, and it introduces a beautiful theme of repentance and forgiveness. It's a great story, and the epilogue, bringing together all of the previous couples, but in a way that still leaves this a standalone story, is perfect. I'm sorry to see the end of the series but looking forward to seeing what the author writes next!
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
The heartwarming conclusion of Second Chance Fire Station
Absolutely loved this one, Tara, I pray God continues to bless you, your family, and your ministry! Come back to Minden with me and visit with the MRFD family with me! This is Evan's, Samantha's (Sam) and their daughter, Sophia's story. Faith, Second Chances, and Found Family are the themes of this whole series, and this one is no exception. I enjoyed watching Evan and Sam getting to know each other again their struggles when the past, present, and future took me on a bit of a roller coaster, but their faith saw them through. Sam and Evan have a teenage daughter after a one night stand 14 years ago, although at the time, it wasn't necessarily supposed to be a one-time thing. However, tragedy struck, and they lost contact. Now, single mom Sam is raising their little girl on her own. What happens when she runs into Evan again in her small town and he's here to stay? What happens when he meets Sophia and learns she's his daughter and makes it clear he wants to be actively involved in her life? Can Sam and Evan learn to settle the past and learn how to co-parent Sophia? Could there still be an ember of love between these two parents? See how their faith in the God of second chances guides them through their lives both through their trials and their good times!
One of the things I love most about Ericson's writing is that she writes a strong faith theme, swoony heroes, and hard topics. This story just might be my favorite from her. I love how she showed the consequences of Sam and Evan's actions. It wasn't glorifying it, just simply showing what happens after we do things we shouldn't. And then how we try to learn from our mistakes and move on. Sam and Evan had a past - one with mistakes, miscommunication, and so much more. And while I didn't agree with the way things handled things when she first encountered Evan again, I get it. She's human and Ericson wrote the story realistically, not how I would want it to go. And that's why I love her.
Now, drama aside, Evan is swoon worthy. Like yeah, I'll just leave that right there. But I think sometimes the scene stealer was actually Sam's daughter. She was pretty smart, and well you'll just have to read to see what I'm talking about.
The bible tells us that God can turn anything into good if He chooses. This story is a beautiful example of that. I loved every single moment of it. If you're looking for a real-life, faith themed romance, then this is for you. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Full disclosure, I am not the biggest fan of "secret" baby tropes. Generally, the couple has pre-marital sex, which I don't agree with. While the main couple in this story did have that same beginning, the story was so tastefully written and heartfelt, I couldn't help but love it and root for them the entire time I was reading it! Evan comes to a small town to be the assistant fire chief. Little does he know that his life is about to explode when he sees his ex-girlfriend from 14 years ago living in the same town. The dread Samantha feels when she sees Evan for the first time after so long, sends her into a panic. How can she keep her daughter a secret while living in the same town as her daughter's father? Samantha had been the only parent for Sophie for 13 years. She doesn't want to give up any rights, especially with the money and power that is behind Evan Mercer's last name. Grab this book if you want to feel the rollercoaster of every emotion that both Evan and Samantha experience while they navigate the very delicate waters of co-parenting after such a rocky start. Kudos to the author for the excellent writing that keeps the reader engaged with every page! I received an advance copy of this book from the author. That in no way influenced my review.
"My mouth was dry, and I swallowed hard against the knot forming in my throat. I wanted to breach the chasm between us with words, but they faltered and crumbled before they could reach her. "I know I can't change the past, but -" "Exactly," she interjected sharply, her eyes avoiding mine, as if the sight of me might unravel composure. "You can't." The words were clipped, and she stepped back, retreating into the armor of her composure."
Samantha never thought she would see Evan again. So she justified keeping a secret from him. Is redemption possible? Or will the truth ruin everything? A powerful second chance story full of God's grace.
A few weeks ago, I received a fun email. As a part of the launch team for Tara Grace Ericson, she sent us this book WAY earlier than we expected. Such a great surprise! I have really, really enjoyed the Second Chance Fire Station series! This book provided a wonderful ending to the series! And she included a grand party at the end with previous characters. (I LOVE when authors do this!) I definitely wanted to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.
Samantha grew up very poor. She went to college on scholarship. Her roommate convinced her to go to FL for spring break. Samantha met Evan while there. They fell in love and made promises for the future. The last night of spring break, the club where they were caught on fire. They were separated and Sam never heard from him again. 14 years later, Samantha works at the library in Minden. She has been a single mom and taking care of her daughter. Evan grew up wealthy. His father expected him to take over the family business. The night of the fire, his younger brother was killed. He lost Samantha's number, but hired a PI to find her. But, her name was so common, he couldn't find her. Evan is now assistant fire chief in Minden. It's a small town. He and Sam run into each other. When he meets Sophia, he suspects she is his daughter, but Sam won't admit it. She's afraid his wealthy family will take Sophia away from her. Evan is angry and hurt, but then realizes that he can't make up for lost time, but he can be there now. My favorite of the Minden Fire books.
Evan and Samantha’s second chance at love romance is entrancing, thought provoking and inspiring. Both have been through so much in the years since they last saw each other. She has raised their daughter by herself and has built a stable life for them. Seeing Evan again after nearly fifteen years is a shock to her system and sparks the fear that she could lose her daughter. Evan is surprised and thankful that he has finally found Samantha again. When he learns the secret she has kept from him, tumultuous emotions give way to a determination to build a future for them all, as a family of three. Their journey toward a happily ever after includes re-examining the past, letting go of misconceptions, pain and guilt, and allowing their faith to guide them. They have to rebuild trust and open their hearts to love again, not an easy task but well worth the effort.
This book has some many touching moments that tugged on my heart strings. It is beautifully written and a delight to read. I am happy to recommend it.
I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is the 5th and final book in the Second Chance Fire Station Series. This is a clean romance book. The main characters are Evan and Samantha. Evan has moved to the town Samantha and her daughter Sophia live to become the assistant fire chief. Samantha is a librarian. During this book Evan and Samantha reconnect even though she doesn’t want to. When Evan finds out Sophia is his daughter and Samantha has been hiding it for 13 years how will he react? Will he try to take her away like Samantha thought he would do? Will he be able to forgive Samantha for not telling him? Will she be able to forgive Evan for disappearing on her? I loved to watch them reconnect and overcome their fears. I loved seeing Evan become a father to Sophia after all of the time he missed out on. I loved seeing them become the family they were meant to be. God has a plan for you. I will say I tend to avoid secret baby tropes as they are one of my least favorites. However, this worked.
Evan and Samantha are such a sweet, second chance couple.
I loved their history and their journey back to one another. They truly came back to each other in such a faith filled way, it was really sweet to read. The way they rebuilt trust with each other and created their family was written beautifully.
I loved Sam's determination and strength. Evan's protectiveness and loyalty to his girls was so sweet. Sophia was a spit fire and I loved the way that she instantly accepted her dad into her life.
Overall, Tara did a great job crafting this sweet story. And it tied up her Second Chance Fire series beautifully!
My only complaint was the time line of the story that jumped forward a little too often. It sometimes took me a bit to figure out that we had moved forward on the timeline which took away from my enjoyment of the story a bit. Also, secret baby tropes are just not my favorite.
The One Who Changed Everything is an uplifting, Christian, second chance romance. Samantha and Evan really had a strong connection fourteen years before the story begins. Then they never found one another again until he turns up in Minden as the assistant fire chief. Sam fears losing her daughter. Evan feels he is no good. These fears drive who they have become. It was wonderful to see them learn to forgive themselves and accept God's grace. There are some surprising twists and more than one health crisis that must be weathered. This amazing, well written book grabbed and held my attention. Nothing else got done until I reached the end! I am sorry to see this series end as I have loved all the characters. I am looking forward to reading whatever Ms. Ericson writes next.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18
This is an important lesson for Evan and Samantha. They both let fear dictate their decisions, their relationships, and their ability to move forward. Samantha fears losing her daughter. Evan fears that he is "no good." I love how these two teach each other how to forgive themselves and accept God's grace. This couple was a perfect completion to this series. If you like the town of Minden, make sure you read the Bloom Sisters Series and the Seasons of Love series.
There’s a sweet redemption arc in this story-he had so much guilt eating him up, the death of his brother and the loss of Samantha on the same night. She was determined to do it all on her own, be a single mom asking for nothing. But God has other plans quietly weaving their lives back together and being able to use the resources (that he had despised) in ways that blessed. Sophia is a sweetheart so sassy and strong among unwelcome health issues. Christian themes, clean but with a discretion from their youth with an unforeseen baby. Great finale to the series.
Samantha and Evan have such a wonderfully told story. They had a brief but full relationship during spring break until the night a tragedy happened. They lost each other for thirteen years. Evan has moved to get away from his overbearing father and for the promotion he received on his own merit. He never expected to find the woman he had loved and lost. To find he had a daughter he knew nothing about was shocking and amazing. Will they be able to work through their misunderstandings to be able to find the gifts they had been blessed to have been given? Will they get their second chance at love?
The One Who Changed Everything is the final book in the Second Chance Fire Station series, and it is a wonderful ending to a fantastic series.
We got a glimpse of Samantha and Sophia in the One Who Risked It All. However, this time, it's their story. While working as a librarian and being a single mum to Sophia, Samantha is content with her life, but when Evan, an old friend, suddenly appears in Minden, she is forced to confront the past
If you enjoy small town, second chances romances then I'm sure you'll enjoy The One Who Changed Everything.
I received an ARC from the author. However, I wasn't required to leave a review.
Second chance stories are ones that I love, but the addition of the secret baby was a tough one for me. Tara did a fantastic job of walking through Samantha's reasoning and thought processes, and it made so much sense.
I loved how, once Evan dealt with the shock of the secret, he was all in... both for Sophia, and in patiently rebuilding Samantha's trust. I also appreciated his willingness to side with his own little family and not his dad. That takes a lot of "intestinal fortitude."
This was a great series, and I loved the update of all the couples at the end!
Secret child. They haven’t seen each other in 14 years. He moves to her town. He wants to rekindle their romance. She doesn’t trust him. He discovers they have a child and wants to be in her life. Her walls come tumbling down because he is THE perfect man!
Sign. Me! Up!
I love Tara’s books. They’re so refreshing. Faith filled. Hope infused. Feel good. Found family. A group of firefighters that you love every single character. It’s so hard to pick a favorite. And this was really good. Hard to put down.
This series is so awesome. I’m so happy I found it. And went back to it to complete it.
The fifth book of Second Chance Fire Station by Tara Grace Ericson tells us the story of a holiday fling fourteen years later.
Samantha Brown met Evan Mercer on spring break in Florida fourteen years ago. Circumstances intervened where they were separated and he disappeared. Now he’s the assistant fire chief in her home town.
Tara had me not really liking Samantha at first but as she weaves the story you see the complexity of the situation. Will they be able to unravel the layers of time and have their second chance?
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I have enjoyed all the books in this series and this was no exception. Evan and Samantha had had a past resulting in their daughter, but due to circumstances beyond his control, Evan lost contact with Samantha and even a private detective couldn't find her. When Samantha found out who Evan's family was, she chose not to contact Evan out of fear they would take her baby - and having that baby truly changed her life. When they met up, Samantha was slow to trust, but Evan persevered and I loved how he finally wore through her defences. I received an ARC but this review is my own.
This book was a great ending to a fun series centered around a fire station. I liked that this one focused on Evan who had recently moved to the small town of Minden where he bumps into Samantha, a girl he met during a spring break in Florida quite a while ago. I enjoyed learning about their past and about Sophia, Samantha's daughter. I am so glad faith was woven into the story and that Evan and Samantha were given a second chance. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
Great addition to the Second Chance Fire Station series by Tara Grace Ericson. Samantha and Evan had a blissful week together years ago but then he never contacted her again. She’s the librarian in town and he’s the new fireman. She had his daughter years ago that he doesn’t know about and because of his family’s money is afraid he’ll try to take the daughter away. Will they ever get passed their past and forgive each other? Beautifully written story of second chances. *I received this as an ARC reader and am leaving my unbiased review.
This was a sweet Christian contemporary romance. It’s the last in a series, and I read the previous one and it’s epilogue made me excited for this one. Now, secret baby is NOT a trope I love. But! This was a lovely read. I enjoyed the teenager aspect and having medical difficulties really added depth to this story. Samantha is a librarian and a great mom, she’s just afraid. Evan is a firefighter that coincidentally moves into the same town that his 14 year old past love resides in. As they open up and learn to trust each other, they begin to do life together, for Sophia’s sake. This was a sweet read. The ending really works well to wrap up the entire series. This is a just kisses romance.
Poor communication has been the downfall of many a relationship. A sudden passionate relationship 14 years earlier had resulted in a pregnancy and Samantha’s beloved daughter, Sophia. Circumstances, you’ll learn of those as you read the book, and his last name, more about that in the book also, kept Evan from knowing about her. When he shows up as a firefighter in her small town, Sam panics. As I expected, I loved this story and if you haven’t read the previous ones in the series, I suggest you read them, although that won’t interfere with your enjoyment of this book, just your familiarity with Evan’s co-workers.
Predictable, but I really enjoyed. A small town firefighter hero, who rekindles his love interest and finds out he has a daughter (with the love interest). The charitable ways to renovate the local library and set up foundation for the daughter’s much needed surgery were nice. I liked how the author also tied in past characters. It was just enough; not taking away from characters of this story. This series has Christian values/ overtones; a nice touch and not thrown down your throat. A nice series. Recommended.
I had an ARC for this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Samantha met Evan fourteen years ago and has a 13 year old daughter by him, but he doesn’t know it because he couldn’t find her after they returned home. Now he’s in the same town and wants to be part of Sophia and Samantha’s lives. She must learn to trust him and let him into her life. An interesting and tender story about relationships, love, and faith and family.
