La historia se centra en Alexei Ivanovitch, un joven que trabaja como tutor en el seno de una familia rusa afincada en un hotel alemán. La familia tiene problemas económicos, y Alexei se vuelve adicto a la ruleta en parte para emular la intrépida actitud de sus empleadores hacia el dinero.
Así, gana y pierde enormes sumas mientras busca el amor, la riqueza y la aceptación. Sin embargo, sus relaciones humanas son fugaces y superficiales, y acaban siendo sacrificadas en el altar de la adicción.
