Bringing lovers together, one book at a time

The official stuff

Susan writes steamy, sexy and fun contemporary romance stories, some suspenseful, some gritty and dark and hopefully always entertaining. She’s also Editor in Chief at Divine Magazine, an online LGBTQ e-zine, and a member of The Society of Authors, the Writers Guild of Great Britain, and the Authors Guild in the US.

Susan is also an award-winning script writer, with scripts based on two of her own published works. Sight Unseen has garnered no less than five awards to date and her TV pilot, Reel Life, based on her debut novel, Cassandra by Starlight, was also a winner at the Oaxaca Film Fest.

The ‘unofficial’ stuff…

She loves going to the theatre, live music concerts (especially if it’s her man crush Adam Lambert or the divine Cumberbatch) walks in the countryside, a good G and T, lazing away afternoons reading a good book, and watching re-runs of Silent Witness and Wire in the Blood.

Her chequered past includes stories like being mistaken for a prostitute in the city of Johannesburg, being chased by a rhino on a dusty Kenyan road, getting kicked out of a youth club for being a ‘bad influence’ (she encourages free thinking) and having an aunt who was engaged to Cliff Richard

A review by The Blogger Girls.

I can always count on it, and, once again, here is another solid offering from Ms. Mac Nicol. I love that her books all seem to take a different direction, yet each one is as fullfilling as the last.

This starts off running with reporter, Flynn, having been taken hostage by the notorious Bow-Tie Killer (“BTK”). Flynn had made comments about wanting to tell BTK’s story, and to get back at the lead detective on the case, Anthony (Flynn’s lover), who the BTK saw as smug and arrogant, BTK decided to hit Anthony where it would hurt the most.

Flynn is released, but his torment does not end there. BTK has him under his thumb and holds those he cares about as collateral in order to manipulate Flynn. Anthony wants to help Flynn, wants to seek justice, and now, BTK has made it extremely personal.

BTK is one heck of a psycho killer. I loved that we got to see things from his perspective, both as the psycho killer and that of a psycho killer’s double life as a “normal” person in an actual relationship setting. It is difficult to comprehend, but so very interesting to see things from this double angle.

There is so much going on in this story, between BTK and Flynn, Anthony and Flynn, Anthony and his desparation to find and eliminate BTK, Flynn’s ex, Kieren, everthing is woven together with threads that keep you in suspense and on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed how this story played out – so many emotions and angst and psychological thrillery.

If you are looking for a powerful, angsty, psychologicall thriller with a side of smexy love and hot sex, be sure to give this one a try. If you are looking for something sweeter, don’t hesitate to give some of Ms. Mac Nicol’s other books a closer look, as her various books really do offer a little something for everyone.

My first time reading Susan Mac Nicol's work and I mostly enjoyed it. Told in multiple POVs, this is a story about an already established couple: a detective and investigative reporter who get on the radar of prolific serial killer. The suspense is high and some situations are really intense and graphic. This is not a whodunit story since the killer is a known to the reader and has a POV of their own. This was a bit of disappointment for me at first, but I started appreciating it later in the book. The knowing of who was the culprit made the situations that more vicious and unexpected.

Both MCs Tony and Flynn were likable and easy to relate, and had wonderful chemistry. I liked the dynamics between them in the bedroom. There were some heated well written encounters that made for a nice break from the crazy that the killer was bringing to the table. I am happy to say that both men actually talked many things out with each other and there was no miscommunication used as a plot enhancer which is greatly appreciated. The plot was already intense as is.

The author gave voice to her secondary characters. I liked how well rounded that made the story. All angles were covered but that also made for some slightly gruesome moments, so I hope you have strong constitution, folks. The climax of the story happened around 80% mark that gave author time to tie up loose ends but what I didn't get was the explanation of the supposed personal connection that was alluded to throughout the book between Tony and the killer. It was left unexplained and I was left wanting. This was a well written story with a good amount of steam and suspense, gamut of emotions ranging from guilt to incredible rage, passionate love to gut wrenching devastation - very enjoyable and felt in the words written on the pages. The police work and procedures were well described and realistic and added to the grittiness of the story. Overall, 4 solid stars.

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

I had reservations about enjoying a crime thriller, especially when the remainder of Mac Nicol’s novels are emotionally charged romances. But OMG, I was not prepared for Love and Punishment to hit me so hard! Mac Nicol does not pull any punches when it comes to her graphic descriptions, and her characterizations are fascinating and all-consuming.

The reader is immediately thrown into the chaos as Flynn’s abduction takes place in the first chapter. We learn about the killer through their conversation, but we may as well be wearing Flynn’s blindfold because we are unable to identify who this man is. Mac Nicol does ensure that the reader gains a very real sense of the danger Flynn is in and the coldness of the man known as BTK.

Love and Punishment‘s beginning not only gives us the story’s background, but introduces Flynn and Anthony as an established couple. The reader also glimpses Flynn’s bravery and determination, as well as Anthony’s stubbornness and devotion to his partner. Despite the violation that Flynn has suffered, the passion between him and Anthony is palpable and for them, sex is their harbor in the storm.

I enjoyed this book, which wasted no time getting to the action. With equal weight given to the crime plot (including POV from the bad guy) and relationship, I didn't feel cheated out of either story line.

We know from early on who the killer is, so this isn't so much a whodunnit as it is a psychological thriller with a serial killer, BTK, that appears to have a personal vendetta against Detective Tony Parglietto and is willing to use Tony's boyfriend, newspaper reporter Flynn, to get his message across.

The two MC's acted like grown ups for the most part which is always appreciated, without overwrought drama and there is a good supporting cast of secondary characters. Just a word of warning, the killer is a brutal psychopath and the crime scene descriptions and some on page torture may be a bit much for squeamish readers.

Good Ending, Bad Case Story

3 Stars (Rounded Up from 2.5)

Research is a big deal for me when I'm reading a book with a supposed contemporary or "real world" setting. I have a hard time suspending disbelief for certain genres; mystery and thrillers happen to be on my list of genres I can't just "roll with it." I am addicted to procedural cop dramas which are -admittedly- bad enough, so when I'm reading a book where there's a huge conflict of interest between the main detective and the case he's working, no one seems to be thinking about logistics or long-term patterns for a serial killer, and there's obviously real-world scenarios which could have been -and should have been- considered while writing the work?

It just does not do it for me.

BTK is already a coined killer phrase. He's one of the most notorious serial killers in history. At first, I wanted to give the author a pass on using BTK as the nickname since she was going with the "Bow Tie Killer" as her killer's moniker with a matching MO. I thought there was also the possibility the book had been published before the real BTK (which stands for Bind, Torture, Kill, and was the self-given name of serial killer Dennis Raider) had surrendered himself to police custody. I checked the publication date on all editions. 2014. Dennis Raider popped back into the public spotlight between 2004 and 2005. I find it very hard to believe someone working on a serial murderer story would not have heard about or read about -even in passing- the actual BTK killer.

That irritated me a lot.

The "bowtie" signature of the killer is also an already known signature of another killer who I find it unlikely the author would not have at least heard of in passing since that was a signature move of Albert DeSalvo who is known as The Boston Strangler, The Green Man, or The Measuring Man. (A newspaper once called him The Mad Strangler of Boston and his crimes were known as The Silk Stocking Murders for a time since he tied women's stockings or bras around their necks in 'big, loopy bows' after raping then strangling them to death.) I just couldn't get over there being no mention of any actual serial crimes when the signature was so similar.

There's some serious pacing issues in this work as well. It takes an era to feel as if progress is being made on the case; the killer's capture is several chapters before the end of the book. There are a remarkable number of additional characters set up for this one story with all of them being introduced by first and last name in a manner I found tedious. I was fine with there being chapters where we see the killer with his own lover. I was fine with chapters from the killer's lover's POV. I was even fine with there being chapters which focused on issues unrelated to the case. I just got to the end and all I wanted was it to be over already only to discover I have several more chapters which while away my time explaining how things "worked out" for the main detective in spite of all the reasons it shouldn't have been a whole Happy-Ever-After scenario.

I would say there's some spicy sex scenes, some good gore -even if it is done in a way which is irksome in its similarity to real cases not noted anywhere in the text-, and some interesting character relationship developments. I'd tell anyone who wanted to give this a shot to be prepared to suspend their disbelief from the very start or they'll wind up being disappointed as I was, but if one is a reader who enjoys a story where the good guy gets the bad guy and who cares about the details? It's a good read in that sense. There's a romantic relationship which is explored, lots of sex, some funny banter, and a HEA. It was just an okay read for me, but I rated it up to a 3 star review based on the fact I could tell the author did set up a storyline which was followed well with consistent characterization alongside a positive attitude towards an openly gay policeman.

Susan Mac Nicol has another winner in Love and Punishment. It's a story about a hot alpha cop and his lover getting mixed up with a serial killer. What more could a girl want? The "Bow-Tie Killer", so named by the press because he ties a bow around his victims' necks is killing a wide variety of people around London. There is no pattern to his victims and nothing that Detective Tony Parglietto can find to link them together. Tony has very clear-cut feelings about the individuals who commit this type of crime and he is not shy about sharing them privately or publicly. This brings him right into BTK's cross hairs.
The killer wants someone to tell his story, to get to know him so people will know he isn't a monster, that he kills for a reason. He decides to use Flynn Parker, a newspaper reporter (do they even still exist?) who also happens to be Tony's lover. This only makes Tony more convinced that BTK is a monster and more determined than ever to hunt him down now that he has brought Flynn into the mix.
I'm not sure how I feel about Ms. Mac Nicol's back and white distinctions at first. The way Tony sees things and people as good or bad with nothing between the ends of the spectrum. His police partner doesn't like it and it winds up causing quite a bit of trouble for Tony at work. His version of black and white eventually seems to mix somewhere in the middle to form some shades of gray when it is someone he loves and a friend who are involved. The transition was a slow and gentle one, not a bat to the reader's head and a moment of magical insight where Tony sees color for the first time!
Love and Punishment. It really took me a few days after finishing the book to get the title. If I even do. It doesn't matter, it makes sense to me. Turns out that Flynn and Tony make a great team, both in bed and fighting the bad guy. I love their relationship, the warmth and genuine respect they have for each other. When Flynn betrays Tony's trust, Tony is hurt but is able to forgive when he finds out why and really thinks it through.
It reads naturally, like a real couple would deal with a conflict. There was no packing and storming out for a month, there was no throwing of furniture or mother bashing, it was two mature men with differences of opinion dealing with those differences. It's a great feeling as a reader to be treated with respect enough to not need the drama to tell the story. Not that the drama is a bad thing. I love lots and lots of drama. Ms. Mac Nicol just handled it a little more low-key than many.
I enjoyed this book. It kept me up late and I wanted to lick Tony all over. Guess that's as good a recommendation as any.

4.5 star review by Amber

This was an unwanted, but very pleasant surprise. I picked this book up as a favor to help out another reviewer. I didn’t necessarily want it but I wanted to help, so I chose this one. Reading the blurb it pinged so many of my interests that I was very hopeful it’d be right up my alley. And I’m happy to say, it most definitely was! This book was fantastic, FAN FRIGGIN TASTIC!!!! The author is new to me; I believe she’s European so the story is set in England with a lot of English slang. I got a little lost at times but the story was so beautifully told I just went with it and it all made sense in time.

Flynn Parker is in love with life! He has an amazingly hot police detective boyfriend, a thrilling job, and lots of good friends. It’s all going great until he’s kidnapped and sexually assaulted by the serial killer his boyfriend is currently hunting. He’s shocked when the serial killer releases him, letting him know the only reason he is being spared is because he wants him to tell his story. Flynn immediately goes to his boyfriend, Anthony. He sits through medical evals and lots of interviews to make sure they collect all the evidence they can. Flynn does a good job at moving on with his life after his attack but he’s always on edge not knowing what could happen next.

Anthony Parglietto has been a cop for his whole adult life. Protecting and serving is all he knows. His current case, a sadistic serial killer with no MO is weighing heavily on him. Especially after the killer kidnaps the man he loves and then releases him as a taunt. For very personal reasons, aside from the kidnapping of his boyfriend he’s taken this case very personal and knows he needs to be the one to catch this killer.

After meeting with an informant someone who becomes very important towards the end they might be able to break this case and catch the killer.

I don’t want to give it all away especially due to all the twist and turn and the gut wrenching suspense but this book had me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed everything about it. The supporting cast seemed pretty important so it’d be nice if there was a sequel that delved more into those characters.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was pretty fantastic. Very suspenseful and the mystery kept me guessing. Absolutely recommend!!

Love and Punishment was a book that I loved right from the start. I am a sucker for a good murder story and Susan did not disappoint; she pulls the reader in right from the start.

The characters were well developed as individuals and as couples and really allowed the reader to sympathize with each character. I really felt part of Flynn and Anthony's relationship. They were so in love and the reader could see how much they cared for each other. As for the relationship that was between the killer and his lover, Susan did a great job with showing the love of this relationship, despite how twisted it was. Susan definitely has a twisted sense - because man, can she murder someone! It was sick, twisted, devious and awesome all wrapped up in this amazing story.

Susan develops a good crime solving novel with intrigue and enough hard headed characters to make the story in-depth without going too far. It shows the inner office politics of a police unit, the close relationships amongst the lovers and pulls in past relationships of some characters in order to fully tell the story.

There was plenty of angst and steamy scenes, there was great character development and in the end, everything came together in a very well planned conclusion.

There were only a few criticisms. Having a Kindle - with the way the chapters are formatted, it makes it impossible to navigate the book easily. Also, the author uses the word "oriental" to describe a person of Asian nationality. That word is somewhat antiquated and doesn't seem to fit - it makes me think of a rug, not a person. Finally, Susan also uses the word "Jap" when referring to some script and that also seems a little derogatory and unnecessary to the story. She could have easily used the word Japanese and it would not have changed what, I believe, she was trying to convey.

Overall, I loved the book and hope the story continues.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

My rolling pin is now in the bin. Why you ask? Well you seriously need to read to find out.
This book was a little bit on the dark side but had a great story. I'm so used to boy meets girl or boy meets boy and live happily ever after that this book shocked me but in a good way. I could not put it down.
Anthony is a police detective and very good at his job. He has a very protective nature, extremely good looking and he's Italian. YUMMY!!
The man in Anthony's life is called Flynn another hottie. He's a journalist and they are both completely in love with each other.
When a huge case that Anthony is working on starts to affect his personal life things go from bad to worse.
There is a killer on the loose and Flynn is in danger. Anthony will do everything he can to protect him and his friends.
People have lots of different views on the right course of punishment to fit each crime. Many believing in the justice system like Anthony's partner at work Rupert. He reminds me of a bible basher, people that constantly preach.
However Anthony has his own views and it's no secret what he'd like to see happen to these monsters that commit serious, disturbing and hateful crimes and I have to say I agree with Anthony.
There are quite a few characters in this book that I'd love to hear more about like Flynn's ex boyfriend Kieran and their new friend Marshall. Both very loveable characters.
Overall this book was outstanding because the story was gripping. The research that writers need to do in order to give the reader the best account possible did not go unnoticed in this book.
Had to be 5 rolling stars, pun intended. I highly recommend this book to readers that love the M/M Genre but also love a gripping story.
Warning does contain scenes of abusive violence.
Once again I thank you Author Susan Mac Nicol for taking me on a journey of love, life and a serious killing spree.

Love and Punishment is another gripping read by Susan Mac Nicol.

This book is filled with suspense, love, and yes - fear. From the very beginning, you are pulled into the world of Anthony and Flynn and even the Bow Tie Killer (BTK). Yes, in this story, you get to read the bad guys POV, it was such a compelling book that I couldn't put it down.

The joys of reading Susan Mac Nicol's books is that they are not your typical read...they are filled with angst, love, and some really hot guys.

Anthony is a detective, he is not shy about his pov on the BTK, he wants justice and while some might not agree with his beliefs - he stands by them. Anthony has lost his brother, and if he can't find justice in that killing, nothing will stop him from finding and stopping the BTK.

Flynn is a reporter, he has voiced his wishes to tell BTK's story, which puts him in the line of danger. When Flynn meets BTK, he is threatened and he will do what he needs to do to protect those who are important to him.

BTK is smart, and dangerous. He walks among us, and no one has any clue just how dangerous he is. He is able to put on his "mask" and leave no one being the wiser as to who the monster behind the mask is.

The secondary characters in this story are so loveable, that I wasn't able to stop myself from yelling at them, trying to get them to figure out who was who before it was too late. I can say that Susan has a fan in this reader, has for a while, but with the way this woman writes...I can't wait to see what is next.

Flynn is a reporter and made a statement to the press telling a serial killer labelled the Bow Tie Killer (BTK) that he wanted to tell his story. He finds himself abducted and terrorized by the killer.
Anthony is the detective in charge of the case and Flynn’s lover. After Flynn’s abduction, he is more determined than ever to find this killer. Anthony’s views of justice are not widely received on the force and this causes conflict with his new partner because Anthony feels if the killer isn’t dead he will get out and continue his death tolls.

As you can see there is a lot of suspense going on here. There are other key characters as well, we have Kieren, Flynn’s ex-lover, several people on the force, and there are others as well. Every single character is well written and intriguing.

This is a very powerful, angsty, psychological thriller full of emotion, chilling suspense and really hot sex. I will warn you it’s not for the squeamish, there is violence and rape. Don’t read this right after eating. Also, be sure to set enough time once you start reading you won’t want to put it down. It is a real page-turner.

One thing I really loved was that we actually meet the murder and part of the story is told in his and his current boyfriends view. I found this a very intriguing concept.

Manic Monday Review

Now that’s how you get the reader’s attention, lol. Right off the bat the author throws you into the action.

Flynn, a reporter, makes a very unwise statement to the press. He tells the serial killer, named the Bow Tie Killer (BTK), he wants to tell his story. Well, get certainly gets the killer’s attention. BTK abducts Flynn. The killer doesn’t physically hurt Flynn, but he scares the crap out of him, that’s for sure. Seriously, that part will make you hair stand on end. Well, after having a little talk with Flynn, the killer lets Flynn go. Then the scary stuff starts: BTK starts sending messages to Flynn about himself and tells Flynn he can’t tell his lover.

Want to guess who the lover is, lol?

Detective Anthony Parglietto is in charge of the case. And yup, you got it! He’s Flynn’s lover. Once BTK abducts Flynn, Anthony is a man possessed. He’s determined to bring the killer justice. Problem is, Anthony’s idea of justice doesn’t necessarily fit with the law… and his fellow cops.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. The pacing is excellent. It’s suspenseful and keeps you turning the pages wanting to know more. While the story revolves around a killer and finding him, the relationship between Flynn and Anthony is just as important. It plays an important part in the story. So, we get an excellent murder mystery and a love story. It’s worth the money.

It's 2:00 in the bloody morning!

I could not stop reading this. What an incredibly engrossing and sometimes gross, story. I absolutely loved Tony and Flynn. There was great character building here. There was an overwhelming amount of suspense right from the start. Poor Flynn! Poor Tony, too, with his frustrations with the case and the tangle of emotions he has to face. Flynn was a steadfast support, even when he made mistakes. The way the viewpoint of the killer as shown was chilling. There are some quite graphic depictions of the acts this psychopath/sociopath (or whatever he'd be called) perpetrated. The mind games he played were truly evil. Marshall was initially an enigmatic character. He turned out to be stronger than he first appeared and his sense of humor surprising. I'd like to know how he and Keiran progressed. The attitude Tony held regarding some criminals was one I wholeheartedly agree with. I believe in the punishment fitting the crime. My personal view is that if someone is so mentally disturbed that they intentionally kill, or violate children or adults, they don't belong in the gene pool anymore. So the circumstances were quite satisfying. Rupert Gregg had some good intentions but I don't understand how any police officer wouldn't have an understanding for the desire for retribution in some cases. I really enjoy Susan MacNicol's books. I'd love to see some kind of sequel.

I’d give this book all the stars in the world. I loved the criminal investigation, the reporter following a serial killer and ending up taunting them, the relationship between Anthony and Flynn, and the story line following the serial killer and his day to day life.

Reading this felt like watching one of my favorite shows or movies on TV. It probably helps that I am a big Criminal Minds, CSI (except Miami), Bones….. anything where baddies are brought to justice fan.

The guilt over not being able to solve his brother’s murder, his open views about what a human being is and what isn’t one, his deep love and protectiveness towards Flynn, all of this made Anthony an amazing character to watch. Perfect with his imperfection, and surprising even when he acts exactly how you’d expect him to. The same is true of Flynn, he’s real, and you can’t help but love him, even when you want to scream at him.

Love and Punishment starts by making you grip your kindle and not put it down, it jumps right into the heart of the action and after that, much like the characters, all you can do is read on and try and adjust as you go, hoping for the best. I loved every minute of it and I can’t wait for more from Susan!

I loved Susan Mac Nicol’s book, Saving Alexander, and I couldn’t wait for her new books. Saving Alexander made me thrilled and Susan’s new book, Love and Punishment, excelled in thrill as well. I always love characters who need protecting and in this book it’s Flynn Parker, Anthony Parglietto’s boyfriend. Parker’s misery and angst, man, I feel like a monster feeding from those. But whether you like the protected, the protector, or even the antagonist, all characters in this book felt so real to me. It’s like watching a movie. That quality is always there in Susan’s stories.

Story-wise, Susan did a great job weaving the plot. I thought I knew the bad guy already but in fact I didn’t really, not until near the climax of the story. I didn’t try to guess who it was because whoever the bad guy is, he is so mean and evil. To me the point is not who, but how he can be defeated. And Susan managed to give a twist for that.

I loved this story. I wish someone would make a movie out of this book someday. There’s only one thing I wish it were different and it has something to do with Flynn.

Love and punishment is my first book i read from SMC and i have to say i enjoy it. Even if i heard of her books i didn't read any till now and i must say it won't be the last. As much as i enjoyed this book i hv to say were many moments where i was really frustarted with the characters but in the same time intrigued with the plot as well. One thing what disappoint me the most was that i guessed who was the killer from the first moment when he appeared in the book but i am kind of used to this till now cuz i do that with many other books.

Overall this was a enjoyble read and i def recommend it.

Wow Susan you have done it again what a great read you had me captivated with the serial killer storyline intertwined with the romance and not to mention the HOT sex! I felt like I was watching one of my beloved English murder mysteries Prime suspect, Wire in the blood etc Cannot wait to read more from you!

It wasn't my favorite of her books, but it wasn't too bad. I got a bit bored by the bad guy, he just seemed too stereotypical. In fact, the whole story felt a bit formulaic, but it wasn't so annoying that I couldn't finish the book.

I loved this book, nothing was obvious in the plot which I enjoy. I loved Anthony and Flynn equally I think, well one minute I love one more than the other then it switches again, I've now decided I shouldn't have favourites!

I love the variety of this author's stories and the high quality of her writing.

Good balance of story and sex with story being the most prominent.
