Patchwork Heaven

Rate this book
Singer Coby Kennedy and his drummer twin, Bruce, have a band called Patchwork Heaven. They have been rising steadily up the country music charts, but unfortunately, that rise has attracted unwanted attention. Faced with anonymous letters, sinister gifts, and the wanton destruction of their personal space, they hire The Detail, a specialized security firm. Coby never anticipated Gregor, The Detail's owner and his personal guard, would be quite so intriguing.

As the stalker gets closer and more violent and questions pile up, Gregor fears his past might get in the way of him finding who is threatening his client when he becomes suspect number one. Even though Coby is convinced Gregor is not behind the threat, Gregor is not sure he's the right man to keep Coby safe, either from the stalker, or from his own interest in the singer.

Jaime Samms is a plaid-hearted Canadian who spends the too-long winters writing stories about love between men and the too-short summers digging in the garden. There are dust bunnies in the corners of her house—which she blames on a husky named Kai. There are dishes on the counter—which is clearly because teenagers! There is hot coffee in the pot and the occasional meal to keep her from starving—because her husband is remarkable and patient.

A multi-published author whose work has been translated into French, Italian, and German, Jaime delights in the intricate dance of words that leads her through tales of the lost and broken hearted men she writes about to the love stories that find and mend them.

And when the muse is being stubborn, she also makes pretty things with yarn and fabric scraps because in her world, no heart is too broken to love, and nothing is too worn or tired it can’t be upcycled into something beautiful. All it takes is determination and the ability to see life a little bit left of center.

This is ... mostly okay, and would be fun for someone who's really into the protector dynamic, especially when it comes with a big fat side order of dominance and submission. I was also intrigued by MC1's, Coby's, quasi paranormal ability to see people's emotions as color auras. The book as a whole teeters on the edge of PNR, because substantial characterization and plot hinge on a mystical bond between twins.

This was one aspect that didn't work for me. MC2, Gregor, had a twin who died in a car accident and much is made of how he felt the bond vanish with her. OK, I know this is paranormal and has its own logic, but Gregor's twin was biologically female and I kept bumping up against the fact that twins who are XY and XX are no more closely related than any other siblings; they shared space in the uterus but they're not identical, so if the twin bond is predicated on ... oh, never mind.

("Gregor" is an unfortunate choice of name for a romance protagonist, isn't it? Even people who've never read The Metamorphosis know what happened to that other Gregor, and if you have read your Kafka then a giant cockroach may appear in your mind's eye every time you see the name. At least, that's what happened to me.)

I would also like to devote a paragraph to yelling at Jaime Samms for perpetuating a vile and dangerous myth -- to wit, that people who've abused opioids can't ever get morphine etc. for pain relief. NO. First of all, if they're hospitalized (like Coby's brother in this book) the quantities available are limited simply by virtue of the person being, you know, in the hospital. If they're not hospitalized, for example if they have cancer pain but are being treated on an outpatient basis, they're prescribed a limited quantity, even more limited than you get if you don't have such a history. They, and in most medical practices everyone else who gets opioids, have to sign a contract with the doc. They undergo regular urine testing. They do not automatically relapse into uncontrolled use, and in fact -- here's the kicker -- inadequate pain relief is a major risk factor for relapse. If you have ever had chronic uncontrolled pain you will understand why this is so.

Also annoying: it's the brother's sponsor who decides what pain meds the brother can get. Are. you. effing. kidding. me. Does he have a medical degree? No, he does not. Never mind that 12-step programs are not the standard of care for substance abuse disorder, a fact that hasn't made it into most novels yet anyway.

(How do I know all this? My spouse is a physician specializing in palliative care and we are close to a family who lost a child to overdose and who are now devoted to harm reduction work.)

Um I usually love Jamie Samms but I feel like an alien took over her writing and this is the result. I’m struggling with this book pretty mightily and considering I’ve had a rash of bad luck with books I really don’t want to continue with this because I’m pretty confident it’s not getting any better. Then I’ll have invested a lot into a book I got no enjoyment or entertainment from. YMMV.

To start with I can’t believe that the plot got this far – I’m at page 100 – without someone pointing out the numerous inherent flaws. I worried that I was alone in my frustration and anger at the story until I skimmed reviews to see that thankfully others feel the same way. To start with the plot should be fine, if only it was executed well. Twin country music stars are being stalked and hire a bodyguard firm to keep them safe. Predictably twin one, the main stalkee, falls for said bodyguard and after much angst and sex, happiness ensues. Unfortunately I just can’t ride out the angst and I don’t like the couple anyway.

Initially I thought this book was a sequel since there are numerous references to something that happened to Bruce, but no one will say exactly what happened. Instead it was as if the reader should already know, from a previous book I thought, and the story wasn’t rehashing the information. Instead this is supposedly the first book so I don’t understand the need to refer to secret information constantly without giving the reader the details. It just annoyed me. Most likely a sequel will go into whatever happened to Bruce but I don’t think –this- book needed so many constant references when that information isn’t going to be offered, at least it wasn’t yet.

Furthermore, Gregor, the owner/lead bodyguard, is incompetent. There are so many holes and flaws in his “protection” that it’s not surprising the twin being stalked, Coby, is basically on his own the entire book. For starters someone breaks into his trailer because apparently Gregor only has 3 bodyguards, including himself, protecting this incredibly high profile music star. No one can be spared to watch the trailer apparently. So the stalker also gets the drop on the bodyguard and knocks him out with a two-by-four when of course no one but the bodyguard and Coby are around. Then the stalker gets away without anyone seeing him. No one calls the cops because why would they? No one apparently covers the post when Gregor goes to the bathroom either. It’s just left open for Coby to get assaulted. Then let’s discuss how a stalker gets close enough to gun down both twins, Coby and Bruce, but everyone tells Gregor it’s not his fault. The truth is … it IS his fault!

I started ranting about these circumstances almost immediately and then kind of went off the rails when Gregor has Coby walk down three flights of stairs in a hospital when he’s released from the hospital. Apparently some paperwork means the hospital will ignore their liability claims for someone famous. I get really annoyed at books when authors have to justify and explain something they know readers will dislike. Any reader will balk at Coby walking down stairs to an alley before being discharged but hey, the book explained it so it’s ok.

All of this was bad enough but honestly the BDSM stuff out of nowhere is where I really lost the book. Coby does not come across as submissive to me, at all. He feels overwhelmed because he’s being stalked and perhaps a little mentally slow, given that he sees music as colors nearly constantly, but not submissive. So this random scene where Gregor suddenly dominates Coby, fresh out of the hospital and still hurting, seems out of nowhere and simply, wrong. It feels wrong. Coby even says he thinks Gregor needs to dominate so he’ll give in.

Honestly it just all added up to a book I wasn’t enjoying and didn’t want to slog through to the end. I’m only a third of the way in and the thought of reading more depresses me sadly. I’m passing.

I auto buy Jaime Samms books - lets just get that out there. I have enjoyed most of her books so far. I expect great things. That said, I'm struggling with this one. Sadly, I'm not going to finish.

Gregor, the bodyguard and owner of the security service is the worst bodyguard and security company ever. Ever. There seems to be no understanding whatsoever of security protocol, not even the most basic kind garnered from watching police procedural tv shows. Where were the beta readers to point out the issues with the way events are unfolding?

I'm on page 60 and there are so many security mistakes and holes in the events that have happened so far, I'm kinda done. Really, Gregor should have been fired on page 10. Immediately. Including his whole "team" that is utterly useless.

Some issues that I can't overlook.

Maybe I need to give it more time, but I can't suspend disbelief anymore. I'm just getting to the sex and the whole submission aspect seems rushed and ridiculous. Usually this author writes very hot sex scenes so I'm kinda bummed to miss them but I'm turned off now and I don't think I can get my mojo back.

I expected to love this book. Maybe others will. Actually, I'm sure others will. I just can't keep going. There are just too many other books in my TBR pile waiting for their chance.

I'm not going to rate it since I didn't finish it.

This cover spoke to me... the story took a bit longer to grab my attention! Unlike other reviewers, I didn't find the story confusing at all. I will chalk that up to my unusual weirdness in RL! *grin*

Let's start with Coby... WOW... this guy is so complex I needed a color chart and spreadsheet to keep track of everything and everyone that was happening in his life! I love that his brain saw and heard music as colors... having an unusual brain myself, it was great to see someone dealing with issues that others don't necessarily have to deal with on a daily basis! I liked the way the "twin" thing worked and I felt like Gregor was a perfect match for Coby. I will admit that I was a bit concerned that Bruce was going to end up being the "bad" guy... don't ask me why it was just sitting there in my brain... then came Kip and I was like, nah... Bruce is all good!

The long list of secondary characters added immensely to making this story warm, funny, and sometimes just plain entertaining. I think the author did get a bit caught up in building other relationships in the story, that lead to Coby and Greg's relationship taking a backseat from time to time. Theirs was not a warm and fuzzy relationship... but more of an "we complete each other" relationship. Now, I could see the dominance issue being quietly played out within every couple in the story... Although, I am leaning toward Rene, with his quiet self, actually being the dominant figure between he and Karen... IMHO!

The "twin" thing was just mysterious enough to keep us cheering for the bond when it was needed most and I absolutely adored the author's take on "twin" speak! I have seen it in RL and have been totally amazed by it. I truly believe that most twins have a bond that us as mere siblings will never feel... maybe that isn't always a bad thing...

I really liked this book at the beginning but the more I read, the more I found this book dragging. I also figured out the stalker about half way through. There was no connection for me with the MCs and I found the connection between Coby and Gregor missing something.

Originally published nearly eight years ago by Dreamspinner Press, Patchwork Heaven has just been re-released by its author, Jaime Samms. I never had the opportunity to read it in 2014, so I have no way of saying if there were any changes or edits done in this newer edition. I'll be honest, I felt a wee bit lost reading this. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to have read something prior to this, like I was missing an important event or two that would better explain most of what I was reading. Suspending disbelief is a necessary thing with Coby and Gregor's story. You almost wonder how the heck Gregor was actually working in security considering the stuff that happens to Coby under his watch. Then there's the BDSM aspect of the story, which came out of nowhere, and it got lost in the shuffle of an already confusing mish-mash of stuff. I really wanted to like this book, especially given that the blurb was enticing, the title quite creative, and the cover just lovely. Alas, Coby, Gregor, and I simply didn't click, but it may be a case of it's-not-you-it's-me. This snags three stars.

“To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable; to make yourself vulnerable is to show your strength.” ~ Criss Jami

Coby and Bruce Kennedy are identical twins and, as twins often are, very close. In fact, their intimacy is often mistaken for more than that, which is ludicrous, but the paparazzi love a scandal - real or imagined. The twins are exceptionally talented, together and in their own right, and share an uncanny connection of thoughts and feelings. Although it's often a good thing, this closeness can and does have negative effects too, especially when one twin is experiencing mental or physical distress. The voices in their heads intermingle to the point of distraction. In order to function more efficiently, Coby and Bruce need to learn to manage this phenomenon so it's an asset and not a detriment.

Coby suffers from a stress disorder and often wonders why he's in a profession that demands he put himself out there so much, but he's talented and loves performing with his brother and their country band, Patchwork Heaven. Coby is also has synesthesia, a fascinating neurological phenomena wherein the brain accesses two or more senses at the same time with remarkable results. In Coby's case, he feels and sees emotions in color and musical notes connected to those feelings, and translates them into lyrics. This also bleeds into his real life, i.e., when things are bad, he is surrounded by blackness and practically paralyzed by fear. When they are good, Coby sees bright, uplifting colors which he transcribes into music. Coby is only able to make this happen when he is emotionally stable. Considering his band is being stalked, this is a difficult time for him to be productive. Regardless of how tight the bodyguard, Gregor, makes security, the stalker still manages to find ways to terrorize them, escalating his efforts each time. Coby and Gregor eventually become lovers, and Gregor attempts to teach Coby to trust his feelings inside rather than having to always see his colors. The only way to overcome a fear is to face it.

As in any mystery, several suspects arise, Gregor being one of them. Things go from bad to worse with Coby being injured and his twin, Bruce, being wounded by a gunshot. Bruce has always been the strong one, the one who made all the decisions. With him hurt, Coby has to learn how to step up and carry the load for a while. This allows Bruce to be vulnerable for once and face a few of his own demons, including re-discovering an old flame.

There's a lot happening in this book, on several levels: the brothers' relationship; the stalker; the other band members; the love affairs, and the security company's role which all come together in what is an interesting but complex tale. The characters are just as complicated as the story and I had to dig a bit deeper to understand their personalities. This novel takes more concentration than usual, but is worth it. Jaime is a great writer whose stories always intrigue and challenge me. This book is no exception. I recommend this story to those who enjoy country musicians, bands, suspense, angst, intrigue, and redemption. Thanks, Jaime!

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

I loved this!! I found it a little confusing sometimes but what a great story!! I could almost hear the music and see the colours.

Coby and Bruce Kennedy are twins and they have this weird twin thing going on. By the end of the book I was feeling pleased I wasn’t a twin and having to live with other people’s emotions in my head! Almost everything about these two boys is tied up together including the person out to get them.

As we start the story we learn that the brothers have a stalker problem and have called in extra security the head of which is Gregor, a dominant and sexy man, with twin issues of his own. The two boys are part of a country singing band and are currently on tour. No matter how tight Gregor and his men make the security surrounding them nothing seems to prevent cards, letters and gifts getting through to them. When their trailer is ransacked everyone is put on high alert and it seems this is just the start of the escalation in activities and very soon they are left fearing for their lives.

Coby and Gregor are both attracted to each other but starting anything proves difficult when they are client and employer and someone seems determined to harm Coby. When they do get a minute and examine their feelings Coby is startled to learn something new about himself but is very open to the way Gregor makes him feel. I loved this side of their relationship. With the way Coby relied on his brother it felt a very natural way for things to go for them and they both needed it for different reasons.

I have to admit I kind of guessed who the stalker was quite early on but it didn’t take anything away from the story. I needed to know the whys and it was far more complicated than just knowing the name. There are a lot of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages and make you unable to put the book down.

There is a little bit of everything in this book and Jaime Samms has produced another winner! The epilogue was just perfect!

I couldn't feel the attraction between Gregor and Coby at all. One had to suspend belief to read this story - a hospital letting a patient leave by descending 3 flights of stairs, a security firm that was useless but still successful, a shooting at a concert yet no stampede and assailant not caught etc. The plot had lots of holes and the BDSM came right out of left field. The most interesting couple was Bruce and Kip - I wouldn't mind seeing more of them.

I read this book for the first time in 2014. I absolutely loved it. I loved how the twins worked and how close they were and that they both got their HEA in the end. There were some grammar stuff but besides that I loved this version is canadianized because I, myself, am Canadian so that was cool. I did downgrade from 5 stars to 4 stars. I love this story though

This book is very engaging and had me reading past my bedtime on multiple occasions. The stalking storyline is well-executed and contains just enough suspense to get the heart going.

Sometimes the “twin link” between Coby and Bruce was hard to follow; I’m not discounting the link as I’m not a twin, but sometimes it was hard to discern when Coby was “feeling” his brother. Also, Coby’s synesthesia was sometimes confusing. I’m not saying either of these things are negatives — it goes to show the chaos in his head and, further on, allows readers to see how Gregor calms that chaos. But it often slowed my reading down as I worked to figure out whose headspace I was in.

However, I’m just going to say it. I didn’t like Gregor. I didn’t dislike him, per se. But I never connected with him, despite his trauma. I was able to experience what he did to calm Coby but even that never seemed to soften the character enough for me to be drawn to him. And the book cover, which initially pulled me to this book, doesn’t seem to “fit” Gregor for me.

That being said, Coby’s character was developed with so much complexity, you couldn’t help but root for him. His anxiety was sensitively handled. Bruce’s addiction was also treated with compassion.

The side characters that are somewhat developed (Kip, Cade, Lewis and Jake) are done so quite well and bring some robustness to the story. However, the mini-arc about Lewis and Jake seems to just drop away about 2/3 in.

Overall, I’m giving this one 4 stars.

Slow start to a thrilling finish in this M/M romance with intrigue and surprises
“Patchwork Heaven” is perfectly named as it takes a patchwork to fix the characters and events in this M/M romance. Coby and Bruce are twins and as such are extremely close. They can sense the other’s happiness or worse. Their unique ability will play a part throughout the book. They both have difficulties which are explored too. Sensitive subjects will come into play of addiction and what I saw as paranoia.
Because Coby being the lead singer in the band, Patchwork Heaven, has been getting obsessive fan mail, the band has called the security firm of The Detail. Unfortunately, there have been no leads in this ongoing problem. The Detail’s co-owner, Gregor is enamored of Coby but hides it from everybody, he thinks. To his dismay everybody but Coby is aware. Even more regrettable, after Gregor finally gets Coby to understand that he has feelings for him, the obsessive fan strikes in a most dangerous way. Now Gregor becomes a suspect.
By mid-way this book becomes a spine-tingling thriller, but honestly, it comes with a slow start. I’m not sure if it was the length or if it was a lot of words and less action that made me feel like it could have been better shorter. By the end of this book, you will know these characters inside and out. If you like in depth studies of characters, M/M romance with an HEA along with some thrilling and surprising parts, I suggest you read this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Gay Romance Reviews. Excellently written and edited.

I really really wanted to love this one.
A okayish start as a drama unfolds as the stalker gets a bit too close to Coby and Bruce his twin again. I had to wonder what was all the descriptions about for Cody's eyes and vision?. The book goes straight into the middle of the story which I was playing catch up with no back story.
Coby and Bruce where part of the band that had a stalker on their hands who was ramping up his actions.
Gregor was the security making sure they where safe even putting himself in harms way..
Tensions at the slightest thing out of the the band were freaking as where their stalker would go next.
A suspenseful beginning and it continues as the story progresses with happenings. I felt for Kip as he was in the firing line especially with Gregor but the twins stick up for him.
I wasn't sure about there connection as it's a little weird without the build up.
One minute there boss and employee and then things happen and Gregor is off the clock with his rules going out the door. Gregor gets all dominant in scenes with Coby..hmm WHAT..is my reaction.
I really wanted to love this as it had all my favourites themes but...
The stalker is easy to pick and scenes get dangerous for them all..

I received an GRR advance reader copy and this is my honest thoughts.

Coby, part of a rising country group. His twin Bruce is his steadiness, he uses him to block out the dark, literally and figuratively. When Coby’s life is threatened by a stalker Gregor and his team of security are hired to protect Coby and the band.

I liked Coby a lot but Gregor was swoon worthy. I liked Bruce’s closeness with his sponsor Lewis (another band member). I was really fascinated with Coby’s relationship with colors and yes I believe it was a relationship. Coby and Gregor we sweet together.

I wasn’t that happy with the stalker part of the story. Gregor and his team failed often enough that they should of been fired. It was as if the author needed to keep throwing things in to plump up the story.

All that said, I did like the book. At its heart was family and learning to trust. Plus I did like the various pairings that were going on.

I received an arc of this book.

Gosh I really wanted to like this book! The blurb is great - super hot even. The premise of twins being in a band together, a stalker, a bodyguard- sign me up! Unfortunately while there were moments of this story that I felt were strong, overall the pieces just did not fit together well for me. I found several parts to be confusing - instead of directly saying what they meant characters did a lot of

“And then he said…” dramatic pause - big eyes…
“No! He didn’t! I can’t believe he did that!”
“It’s true. I know - hard to believe.”

What? That’s how I felt during several dialogue scenes. I mean what the heck was Kip saying when he was finally being interviewed? I struggled to follow what was happening in some key scenes. Maybe I’m slow but it just wasn’t clear enough to me and I didn’t get the satisfied gasp of realization I craze - more of just a “huh?”

For the few moments I enjoyed, this book earns 2/5 stars from me.

A slow starting romance between Coby, a country music star, and his bodyguard Greg (Gregor). I was a little confused in the beginning of the story about the MC's relationship because the blurb had me thinking the story was going to start before Greg was a part of Coby's life but they were already working together from the start. Once the band was off tour then the mystery of Coby's stalker became the focus of the main story with the romance building between the MC's. I really enjoyed how the mystery unfolded all while Coby and Greg were falling in love. Not as much steam between the guys as I normally enjoy that aspect of the story was not lacking and overall the writing style of this author made this book one of the best I read this year. A more complex story but one which is well worth the read.

I feel like I started smack dab in the middle of the story. Well I guess I did. But it we never flashed back to when the story started. I like starting in the middle of something exciting, but this was ridiculous.

There was good action, medical OMG scenes, some good suspense, too, at least around the hospital scenes. The plot was fine, my ideas about who was the culprit jumped around quite a bit and although I did figure it out before the main characters, it wasn't exceptionally long before they caught up. But it was really too slow moving in parts for a thriller, and some of the same stuff kept happening. Gregor wasn't good enough at his job. It was realistic, but too much so for the kind of hero he was supposed to be.

The BDSM sex scenes went on a little too long, and the get to know you stuff took too much time, even for a romance. The suspense would have been better if we were never in Gregor's head. There was doubt about him for a long time, yet we were in his head fairly early and saw clearly that he was worried about Cody. It was clear this wasn't an Agatha Christie murder mystery.

The BDSM was a little more than sexual only/BDSM lite as I was led to believe. It wasn't hardcore in any way but it should be a tag. A lot of the d/s stuff felt realistic in many ways, doable and manageable in a real world situation, and I liked the explanation of what it did for Gregor (although I think he could benefit from letting someone else take charge for once). It bothered me that they didn't have a safe word. "No" isn't enough. I'm not sure how well the BDSM meshed with the thriller part of the story, either. What made it work for me was the equality of it, the acknowledgement that the submissive gave the dominant something that the dom needed; that it was about both of them not just the sub needing something. It actually almost made sense to me. Bruce's description of what went on in Cody's head helped a lot, too.

I liked most of the characters well enough, although I never really warmed to Gregor a whole lot, but why was everyone gay? And don't get me started on the sexism. I knew it was written by a woman a third of the way through because the male M/M romance authors aren't so sexist. The only females in the book were one band member who was only in one scene and who was constantly emphasized as being a mom and having a husband to run home to; the stereotypical mothering cook, always feeding people, standing up to grown men when it came to foolish behavior, men worrying about swearing around her and obeying her commands to sit or whatever, but who was never involved with anything related to the plot; and a couple of nurses. Couldn't just one law enforcement person have been female? A doctor? A lawyer? Someone on the crew? Anyone?

The reason that I labeled this book as paranormal is that much of the book hinged on this special empathic almost telepathic relationship twins allegedly have. I just do not buy this at all. I can understand a certain amount of being attuned to one another, but that they project their emotions to the point that the other twin can't sleep or concentrate when they're not even present, is absurd. It even goes beyond that in this book to where a twin in love with someone else who is also a twin, get that telepathic bond with that person, too.

Some things I really liked:
The way Cody sees feelings and thoughts in color is cool.

The barrettes thing with Bruce is fun and quirky enough to be believable.

I like that the dom is the littler less huge guy.
Some things that annoyed me:
You can't see anything past the floodlights and certainly not individual faces.

Security guy with pony tail. So not original. So...eww.

If how would Gregor know drugs would make the twin link fade?

There's this much publicity about the bisexuality and they're still mega popular country music stars?

Cody told Gregor his hard limit and that's what Gregor started with??

The moment Cody the trust should have been wiped away. Gregor did let him get hurt, he didn't .

Ibuprofen doesn't make you loopy nor tired.

I'm pretty sure that for insurance reasons they'd have to readmit him to the ER before they could stitch him up.

Cody's an idiot for not immediately trying to find out what the past stalker business of was all about.

Aren't show jumpers small people? A big body\guard that used to be one doesn't make sense to me.

A freshman is three years behind a senior not four. So taking a extra year to finish makes it a four year difference, not five.

A flimsy steel door? What does that even mean?

That is a VERY soft bed if just sitting on the side makes the person in the middle topple over. I wouldn't expect that in a hotel room.

Why is it OK for to suck without a condom but not for ?

They live in a mansion, in a whole wing built within the last few years just for the two brothers, and Cody has a combo shower and tub where you have to step over the side to get in? Seriously? Most good size houses in the U.S. with master bathrooms have separate showers and tubs nowadays.

When crossing names off the list did they consider someone could have been impersonating the people whose names were there?
So basically, this was just an average thriller albeit with a couple of decent hospital scenes, and the believability varied a lot. Something was off/wrong about it although I'm hard pressed to say what.

I always hate to write semi-negative, or indifferent reviews, especially when I know the author is great, however I always try me best to be honest so here goes:
This one had me lost at times tbh, I felt like I was thrust in the middle of a story straight away....trying hard to play catch up, I also had a hard time with the connection between Coby and Gregor 🤷🏻‍♀️ some aspects of their relationship just didn't fit for me, something was most definitely missing IMO.

I have to say that I enjoyed the ending and would read another book connected to this story in hopes that I would pick up on what I felt was missing from this one, I am at a 50/50 split with recommending.

I was not sure about this book from blurb, but I ended up liking it very much. It had just the right amount of mystery/suspense and romance for me. Seems someone is stalking band mates (and twins) Coby and Bruce. What starts out as harmless soon become alarming and they hire Detail (Gregory) to protect them. Soon Gregory, always the profession, begins to realize he is developing feeling for Coby and he cannot do that given he has a job. It is fun to watch him unpack those feeling and realize his heart is stronger than his professional work ethic. I love the comfort and sense of calmness he provided Coby. It does have some sad and possibly triggering points, but in the end the romance prevails. Great book. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

Success can bring more than just fame and accolades. It can also bring danger for the successful. Coby and his twin Bruce are in Patchwork Heaven. When they start to realize that the attention they are getting is going from intense to something that is scary they hire Detail, Gregor's security firm. I like the tension in stories where someone charged with protecting a client in danger has to wrestle with growing feelings that challenges their ability to stay focused on the threat while they fall in love. This story didn't disappoint. They went through some things to get to their HEA, but they got there and we got to go along for the suspenseful journey.

This book was so so good. The character building was perfect and everyone got their story in a way that made them relatable. Coby was the main character, who was being stalked by an unknown person with the interactions intensifying over the time of the story. He is attracted to his bodyguard Gregor who is also a twin, who's sister died in a stalking incident many years previously. Bruce, Coby's twin is discovered to actually be the target after the police do some modelling of the latest incident. Kip is the prime suspect as he can't be found but is hiding in the barn. It's a great read and I'm going to stop here because I don't want to give the ending away.

This was such a good read. Highly suspenseful and complex. I spent so much of the book worried and scared for one of the characters. I do have to admit I figured out most of who was involved and then all before the book revealed it but then I was more connected to that. I would have liked to have seen more information about the connections and what I think is synesthesia in here. I think that would have helped with some readers’ confusion. When I saw the blurb for this in GRR I had to get an arc. I’m glad I did because this may have been the first I’ve read by this author but it won’t be the last.

This bodyguard/celebrity musician romance is an emotional and interesting ride. Coby is part of an increasingly successful band with his twin, Bruce, and has a carefully crafted equilibrium that a stalker is pretty bent on destroying. Gregor comes in as a bodyguard who must contend not just with the peril but with his own feelings for his protectee. I liked the dynamic these two built together, and while I don’t have a ton of faith in Gregor and company’s skills at personal protection (I get that things are are good for drama, but seriously…one job) I did like him as a love interest. All in all, an engaging read.

Very much enjoyed the story. It kept my interest from the first page. My only issue was I would get confused when sentences/thoughts weren't finished. Things had to be pieced together.

****Spoiler ahead****

Also, I was a bit annoyed that in the epilogue it was years later and they were getting married but not one time during the book did they actually tell each other they loved each other. It was very anticlimactic because of that.

Overall, it was a good book. And I almost feel like it could be a series.

This is a very intense book right from the very beginning. Excellent characters fill the pages. The storyline is absolutely gripping. A love story, yes, actually one solid and one in the making, but the romance takes a backseat to the stalking/death threats that takes front and center. I read with bated breath and an anxious stomach. All in the best possible way because this book is just that good. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

This book kind of grabs you by the emotions and doesn’t let go. Twins Colby and Bruce are in a successful band but being at the top brings out the unwanted attention. Colby has a stalker and trying to deal with that along with his phobias is taking a toll. Gregor is their body guard who struggles with his feelings for Colby and his own past. The story is an engaging read with the mystery and I also like Bruce and Kip! I think it’s worth a read.

This is a superb example of one of my favorite tropes, the bodyguard/music star romance. Coby and Gregor have a relationship that caught and held my attention from their first meeting. I enjoyed the parts about Coby and his brother Bruce and their band and also enjoyed the fact they were not rock musicians but country music ones. The stalker plot was suitably creepy and made for a satisfying companion to the relationship development.

This book was good. Greg and Colby got into my head fast and I got pulled through it fast. Many wouldn’t understand the twin bond between the brothers Bruce and Colby but Gregor understands all too well. Especially what happens when it’s gone. This book broke my heart a little but it was so good. And poor Kip. Such a good book and worth a read.
