This book had a potential to be really great as the premise is so intriguing. And I had a good time reading it, however I didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected.
When Emma Duncan wakes up in a hospital after a brutal attack, with no memory what happened. She is suffering from brain damage and she’s partially blinded. Her memories slowly come back, and she begins to piece things together, though not everything fits together perfectly. She has to find out why somebody tried to kill her. But can she trust people around her?
Although this novel had a fascinating plot and dual POVs between Emma and her stalker was really unique, the pacing was really off here. This is a type of book that will take some time to get into. The first half moved incredibly slowly and had multiple flashbacks inside the same chapters, which left me confused about the past and current timelines.
I really enjoyed the second part of the book! It was fast-paced and captivating, making it impossible for me to put down. The novel was full with amazing turns and twists! I managed to figure out who the stalker was, but I was taken aback by the shocking turn of events at the end.
Even with some pacing problems, I really enjoyed it and found author’s ideas really unique. This book was my first read by Leslie Wolfe, but it certainly won’t be my last.
A quick read – well written with a lovely character in Emma but an unrealistic plot.
Emma wakes up with no memory of what happened to her. She remembers her name and that she survived an attack. She is told she is in Baldwin Memorial Hospital in the care of Dr Sokolowski. Dr Sokolowski tells her that she has considerable brain swelling due to which she cannot yet see, but expects it to get better. There are bandages on her head and eyes. Nurses Isabella & Jasmine take turns in caring for her. Over the next hours, she remembers more – she is an actress and was married to Steve, she stays in her house in Lake Tahoe. She remembers that she and Steve are divorced, and she has been in another relationship. Her agent Denise, friend Lisa, Steve and his girlfriend Mikela visit her, and each of these visits triggers a few memories. Emma also remembers a stalker and is afraid that whoever had attacked her will return. There is also the perspective of an unnamed person who is drawn to Emma.
I liked how the writing conveys the tension Emma feels – not knowing whom she can trust and her not being able to see. While the reveal on who attacked Emma, getting her to hospital has a surprise element - as is the case with many psychological thrillers, the story is far-fetched.
My rating: 3.5 / 5.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and the author for a free electronic review copy.
The burb is so well written it so attractive a draw to this pov story. Told by Emma the victim of a britual attack who wakes up unable to see or move or remember much. This tells how she gradually remembers and fights to survive. Told as now and before the accident. This is a slow burner that will keep you awake until you know who the attacker was. As usual it was full of red herrings and the final act was worth the wait. It was well written. There were a few parts of the story that seemed convenient and unrealistic that key characters would not recognise each other for who they were really were. You did have to concentrate as the skillful writting meant that the timelines often switched without warning which is true of our thoughts. This was so engaging. Highly recommended to anyone who likes a good mystery. Thanks to netgallery and publisher and author for this 5 star read.
“Whatever I’ve been running from has caught up with me.“
Wow, just wow! This is definitely a read for fans of Freida McFadden. It is amazingly written and will grip you right from the start. It is a dual POV, going between Emma and the stalker.
Emma is in hospital, heavily medicated, and cannot see anything. She is feeling like she can’t trust anyone, even those who are closest to her. She is desperately trying to piece together all the memories of her life in the hope that she’ll figure out who tried to kill her. Each chapter left me questioning everything; I could not put the book down!
4/5 stars because I did guess quite early on who the stalker was, but I was shocked at the twist of the real identity of the stalker!
Many thanks to Net Galley & Bookouture for this ARC.
Emma Duncan escaped from a brutal attack. She is now in the hospital. She is struggling to remember what happened. Not only does she not remember. she has lost her vision. The only memory she has at the moment was that she was running from an unknown assailant.
Emma is fairly sure that she is married to a man named Steve, and finds herself quite relieved when the doctor helps her to understand that chunks of her past will begin to unlock. As Emma goes day by day, struggling for feeling, struggling for memory. she is disheartened that growth is slow. This is very terrifying to Emma. Meanwhile, she is secretly being watched.
Imagining Emma in a strange hospital under all of those circumstances was rather chilling. The fact that most affected me was the loss of her sight, and having to depend on her other senses to try to handle things each day, all while struggling to regain her memory.
This psychological thriller by Leslie Wolfe was truly engrossing. It was impossible to put down, especially when just before I read this book I was about to undergo a procedure and had in impending hospital stay. Ms. Wolfe did a fabulous job pulling me into the story and therefore allowing me to project Emma’s unusual circumstances to a real life scenario. Excellent job. Excellent twists. Excellent writing.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
3.25⭐️ I was really excited by the premise of this book and it had a strong start, but it lost me a bit in the middle. Something about it didn’t keep my interest and I found myself a bit bored. This book is about a woman who wakes up in the hospital and her memories of her life don’t seem to match up with what is actually real. It is very twisty and I did enjoy constantly guessing what might have happened to her and who she can trust, but it fell flat a bit for me. Her writing is very fast paced and I will definitely read more from her in the future though!
An excellent page-turner with Emma, the main character, who wakes up at the hospital after an accident. Pace is great and I enjoyed the twists and turns.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc
Que livro este. Caneco, irritou-me tanto. No bom e no mau sentido.
Felizmente, havia partes que tornavam a leitura viciante e me fizeram continuar a ler.
Convenceu-me, gostei e recomendo.
Šios autorės skaityta "Chirurgė" man tikrai patiko.
Uau, uau, uau!
This book had me gripped from the very first page. So many twists and turns. I had a feeling half way through who her stalker was but did not know anything more than that til everything came to a head.
I absolutely loved this book and a definite recommend
Wow!!! Another absolutely page turning psychological thriller from this absolutely fantastic author!!!!
An absolutely gripping story filled with twists and turns to keep you guessing. It is extremely well written as well as fantastically narrated by the very talented Tanya Eby!! It kept me completely on the edge of my seat biting my nails waiting for the next twist and what was going to happen next. The storyline is realistic, compelling and addictive as well as frightening. I couldn't even begin to imagine what it must have been like and how scary it must have been for Emma to be stuck in a hospital bed not being able to see and to be completely vulnerable having no idea who is in the room with you. The medical aspects of the storyline are intriguing along with the gripping storytelling. It is filled with suspense, secrets, deceit, mystery and everything you could ask for in a fantastic book!!! I could not put it down and ended up devouring it in one sitting of a few hours!! If you have never read any of Leslie's books then you are definitely missing out!!! The fact that Leslie had done her research on medical procedurals shined through the pages!! Well done Leslie on doing plenty of research as it really puts me off a book when the author hasn't done any research and so many simple mistakes are made.
I must say a HUGE congratulations to both Leslie Wolfe as well as the narrator Tanya who did a fantastic job bringing this story to life with their brilliant descriptions and narration. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Tanya did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Leslie but also to listening to more books narrated by Tanya! The characters have a mix of personalities and are all realistic with their own unique personalities. Leslie's descriptions and Tanya's narrative really brings them all to life ensuring you see everything they do and feel everything they are!!
Leslie Wolfe congratulations on yet another absolute page turner! This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors and here is to your next success 🥂 . I would love to see this turned into a movie!!
Overall an absolutely addictive, compelling page turner that will keep you hooked from beginning to end!!
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the book #TheHospital by #LeslieWolfe. Emma remembers being attacked, someone trying to kill me. Now I wake up in the hospital and I can’t see one move. Why can’t I remember anything? Who tried to kill me. Am I really in a hospital? This books shows you what some people are capable of. I could not put this down.
When Emma wakes up in a hospital bed unable to see and with large chunks of her memory missing, there’s only one thing she knows for sure… someone tried to kill her. Uncertain of who tried to harm her and why, she pushes her mind to piece together parts of her memory. Told in alternating POVs, it’s soon revealed Emma has a stalker - but is that who hurt her?
It took some time adjusting to the writing style of this book. Within the same chapters it would jump between the “now” and Emma’s recovered memories/“then” without really letting the reader know of the transition. It was confusing at first since much of Emma’s POV feels as though you’re within her mind.
This is my third book from Leslie Wolfe, and the first two I thoroughly enjoyed. However I really struggled to get into this one. The first half of the book is almost unbearably slow. While the second half picks up pace, it feels too little too late to grab my attention.
It’s an interesting premise, and parts of it really had me wondering where it all would lead. It’s very psychological and makes you question the interpretation. If you’re looking for a slow burn psychological thriller with a hospital setting and much of the storyline revolving around the main character’s acting career, this is the perfect book for you! I did find it strange that none of the book summary mentioned the FMC being an actress. Those are typically storylines I don’t care for and shy away from.
While this one wasn’t a winner for me, I look forward to future books from this author!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this digital ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
I’ve read Leslie Wolfe’s books in the past and have rated them 5⭐️ but this one missed the mark, it was enjoyable however I found the book interesting, a little confusing to begin with, many characters to keep track of, the plot of the story was good and enjoyable, I liked it and was able to keep up by the end of the book. The story of the stalker and Emma was interesting, I struggled with understanding who the stalker actually was and why they were keeping her blinded to begin with. I loved Jasmines character! The way she was towards Emma!

Podsumowując, „Szpital” to solidny thriller psychologiczny z ciekawym, medycznym tłem i dobrze oddanym poczuciem izolacji.

The Hospital by Leslie Wolfe and narrated by Tanya Eby is a dark psychological thriller, literally and figuratively as our primary protagonist (Emma) is the victim of a vicious assault, leaving her with a traumatic head injury, her wound dressing wrapped around her head and eyes, disabling her sight.
The POV of the victim gives a brilliant dimenson to a thriller, the internal experience of a victim trying to recall her past, her heightened experience of her other senses, piecing together her memory, her environment
In the world of films and celebrity, stalkers are almost considered an occupational hazard, that is until they turn deadly
Character I loved: Emma's thought processes and tenacity. Jasmine the nurse and her storyline. Character I hated: Michaela (Mikky) Emma's Ex-husband's new gf. oooh she nasty!
The audiobook is a gripping listen, the epitome of an audiobook you cannot put down. In all honesty, I did have to start over, but I am so very glad I did because the story is exceptional! Tanya Eby even emulated the stacato speech of a head injury survivor with authenticity
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio, the author Leslie Wolfe ad narrator Tanya Eby for this brilliant ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
This book is quite .. interesting. The premise is good, however it didn't really suck me in the way I thought it would have. Emma Duncan wakes up in a hospital after being brutally attacked. She is suffering from brain damage, making it difficult to recall much of anything as well as move. Her vision has also been damaged, leaving her partially blinded, albeit temporarily. As Emma starts to receive visitors, her memories slowly start coming back. She begins to piece things together and remembers what really happens. This book was a unique one, for sure! The premise is great, however it wasn't the easiest read for me. Majority of the book seemed slow and repetitive. It doesn't really pick up until the end, and although it was shocking, it wasn't my favorite as far as psychological thrillers go.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture, and Leslie Wolfe for this ARC!
Emma wakes up in the hospital after being attacked, paralyzed and blind from brain trauma. She doesn’t know who attacked her and fears for her life while trying to piece together her broken memories of the last few years. This was a predictable but still entertaining thriller.
Very few typos. Excellent detail. I never would have guessed the ending. I love books like this. I was guessing throughout. The author kept it from the patient's point of view.
I have read some Leslie Wolfe books and knew I was in for a good read, but I never anticipated how good. I should have begun sooner in the day, because I didn’t want to stop reading. I gave up in the wee hours of the morning, but picked it up to finish while drinking my coffee.
So many cringe worthy moments I can’t begin to describe them all. Just thinking about them to write this review has hair standing up on the back of my neck and shivers running up and down my spine. Is someone watching me?
Imagine being blind and paralyzed, totally at the mercy of those who ‘care’ for you.
Now, imagine, not all of them have your best interests at heart. I’m starting to get an ominous, horrifying feeling of someone orchestrating a sick game on her, but I have yet to figure out WTF is going on.
More than once I had to remember to pick my jaw up off the floor and close my mouth.
Hello movie people. The Hospital would make a great book to movie adaptation. The complex mystery and psychological torture she endures is sure to put the thrill in thriller.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The Hospital by Leslie Wolfe.
Z każdą godziną dochodzi do niej, iż została pobita, a napastnik nie dokończył dzieła i z pewnością będzie pragnął to zmienić...
Pierwsza część dreszczowca z pewnością jest o wiele bardziej obyczajowa, gdyż opisuje zmagania naszej głównej bohaterki z zatraceniem pamięci i usilnego posklejania swego życia w całość. To właśnie niezidentyfikowane źródło zła i poczucie paraliżującej bezradności przyprawiają o dreszcze.
Autorka porusza niesamowicie intrygujący wątek niemożności odczuwania upływu czasu, braku chronologii wspomnień, niepamięć wpływającą na odczuwanie strachu i paniki, a jednocześnie zatracenia własnej tożsamości. Z każdą kolejną stroną przyjdzie nam odkryć coraz to kolejne rewelacje, dzięki czemu zamalujemy totalnie pustą kartkę.
Z pewnością zaintryguje Cię historia uwięzionej na łóżku szpitalnym kobiety, a dociekanie przezeń ukrytej głęboko w umyśle prawdy i próba zidentyfikowania sprawcy dostarczy Ci wielu emocjonujących chwil. Polecam!
Oh wow, this must be one scary experience. Waking up after an attack and realising you don't know who you can trust, being afraid of everybody and trying to piece together you has put you there.
The only person who can help you is you and this means you have to find the answers and soon.
The first part of the book is rather slow paced and I was wondering where the author would take us. Often pieces of the past and the present were mixed together in one chapter and that's the way it goes in real life too. You are somewhere and something reminds you of the past and you zone out, to be brought back to the present when something or someone startles you.
The more Emma, our protagonist, realises what is going on, the more I was dragged into the story and the pace picked up. The more I read the more I liked it. I found it a brilliant story.
The things some people do for love, or love the way they see it. Love has to be something both people feel comfortable with and not a toxic one.
First, I want to thank Leslie Wolfe, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
OMG!!!! I have been craving a good medical psychological thriller and wow Leslie Wolfe did not disappoint!!! The Hospital is one of the best books that I have read in this genre in a long time!! Leslie’s storyline was so wickedly intense, insanely fast paced, totally addicting that I binged read it in one sitting. This is one book you will want to put on your TBR list and bump it to the top.
Oh the detailed raw emotional filled scenes in the first chapter felt like I was watching a Netflix series that you can’t stop binging on!! I was literally glued to my kindle on the edge of my seat scared to death what happened and what was happening to Emma!! So many questions as to why she was in the hospital and who in the world did this to her!! I needed to find out!
The Hospital you have Emma’s point of view and then you have this very creepy mystery person that chimes in. This person gave me the creeps!!
Leslie did some great research as she addressed an important topic of traumatic brain injury and anterograde amnesia and how it affected Emma. I appreciated how Leslie explained the medical terminology and testing for those who may not have the medical background.
Oh how I was so glad Emma reached out to her Mom. I know how difficult it was but she was able to get some eye opening answers she so desperately wanted and needed!!
I’m a huge fan of all things in the entertainment world so I enjoyed learning who Steve was and who Emma was prior to her attack. However, the more I learned about Steve the more he was not my favorite person.
