For hundreds of years, the legend of Dido has been told and depicted in western art and literature based on ancient Roman texts. Starting in the Renaissance, she became a frequent subject of paintings, plays, poems, and even operas. However, in these stories and paintings, Dido was depicted as a weak and lovesick female, stricken with grief at the thought of the Trojan warrior Aeneas leaving her side. The actual legend of Dido - the one that refutes the long-running false narrative - has never really been told from the perspective of the Carthaginians.
