What I loved about this book is that Dr. Davis shifts the focus away from that old, punishing calorie-counting mentality. Davis argues that the true secret to regaining a youthful physique isn't starvation or surgical intervention—it's about fixing the Gut-Muscle Axis, making sure we lose fat while actively preserving, or even building, the muscle mass that fuels our metabolism. That concept—that we can restore ourselves rather than constantly fight against ourselves— feels like the future of lasting health.
In his 3 week plan, Dr. Davis shares key ideas and structured steps to follow to improve one's diet and gut microbiome. Where Dr. Davis misses the mark, however, is in the inclusion of recommendations on how to build and preserve muscle that involved physical activity. Muscle doesn't just spontaneously appear because the gut is happy; it requires consistent, progressive resistance training to send the necessary growth signals.
Overall, for those looking ways to improve their physical health, this book offers many key concepts and ideas. However, it mostly has to do with diet, so you will need to find information on physical exercise elsewhere.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
So, I want to preface this review by saying I like Dr. Davis and his ideas. I disagreed with some things in this book but overall, I see the points he was trying to make.
I did find this book to be incredibly repetitive. He kept talking about one specific microorganism over and over and he used repeated phrases like "people are repulsed by organ meats, people won't eat organs, etc.". I get that he's trying to emphasize his opinion but it just got annoying.
I was disappointed about the lack of discussion about inflammation, glucose, fasting, and exercise. I feel like those would've been good to include in a book about body composition. There were a few other things that bothered me from a metabolic health standpoint but this book doesn't claim to be a low carb book, so I digress.
So overall, there was some good information in this book but I was annoyed with the repetition and felt like the application of this program wasn't very clear or realistic.
Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
