Winter break is finally here! Miko and her friends set out to attend a special festival for one of her favorite toy characters, but on the way there and at the venue, they just keep getting accosted by monsters…
Nothing beats great Mieruko-chan, but sometimes we only get very good. That’s fine though! This one is still a spooky good time and features some changes that have kind of been a while coming.
Michiru joining the cast with her wild tentacles (that sounds worse than it is, I swear) is a fun broadening of the core group. She and Hana have the strangest bond and I just love it. Her bizarre energy definitely adds to the usual creepy antics.
Most of Michiru’s purpose seems to be adding some extra weird imagery and also throwing some yuri bait into the equation now and then. It’s basically the only real reminder of where the series started, and very minimal, so hardly egregious.
This volume also gives some focus to poor Yuria, who has to deal with a former classmate who wasn’t particularly kind to her. The ending of this one is fun, but it’s a little predictable in a series that thrives on being anything but.
The best chapter is, honestly, the first one. It focuses on Miko and her brother and features both a terrifying threat, plus a welcome return of Miko’s father. This one shows how clever Miko can be when she’s pressed and that’s always welcome, since many times she’s merely been a passive observer.
I’m not sold on the new ongoing story arc, but it’s also true that this series tends to end its big narratives well. As such, it might just need more time to cook. It wasn’t grabbing me this time though; a bit too obvious.
There’s also a callback to a monster that showed up previously in the series and it wasn’t as great the second time around. It was a bit unclear how the ending resolved as well, which was really unfortunate (I think the perspective lets it down).
So, not quite perfect. Still, it’s got everything you love in the series, just a couple added lumps in the gravy. It’ll hopefully really pay off the set-up next time; the last chapter was kind of dull until the cliffhanger, so that might be part of my dissatisfaction.
4 stars - an easy recommend, even with a few flaws. This is never less than readable, but it’s definitely had stronger volumes.
The 11th volume! Before the festival (was terrifying and I was just like NOPE, though I did have a laugh how Michiru was fine with certain moments, the yuri goes strong), the festival (full of bunnies, more bunnies, oh and of course your day to day nightmares including one on someone Yuria knows (not in a good way), I was definitely terrified at points, so thanks), and karaoke (with friends and doom, of course), and more! All filled with ghosts that will make you pee yourself. Plus, we also get to see Seto (sus dude) and Rom (he is in trouble). I love the little things outside of Mieruko seeing creepy things! I am so happy with this series! It is such a delight. Terrifying and nightmare inducing, but fun!
~quick thoughts~ • a bit slower, nothing much progression in the story, it's just building up to something • the volumes end very quickly without a bigger thing happening, but that's not too bad since the horror imagery is the focus • the monster designs are still splendid
A great read as always both in its depiction of the various monsters and twisting the expected, although nothing too surprising at a first glance. Nothing big going on, except a bit of setup for the next arc (suitably creepy), and some typical interaction between high school friends and family muddied by the monsters that only Miko can see. The interaction between Miko and Michiru is yuri-light and a bit of a reminder of the series origin with its echi elements, although only in a limited fashion in this volume. All in all, a great addition to the series.
Okay, look - I love well written filler episodes that stand alone from the main storyline, and this has some great ones (we even get some welcome Yuria backstory). But at the same time - a bunch of new story threads were introduced in the last couple volumes that are barely explored here, and we’re left waiting to see where those will lead. This one also loses points for a whole chapter that feels phoned in (being a near carbon copy of a chapter from an earlier volume). I probably sound more negative than I intended to here - there’s a lot to like in this volume. It just falls short of the excellence of other recent volumes.
