Systema Delenda Est #3

Crashing the System: Systema Delenda Est Book Three

Rate this book
In the years since the Annexation War, Cato has quietly spread throughout the System, watching, waiting, and building his forces. When the Sydean Lineage returns, he finally has a line to the Core, and once he can deal with the System Core, he can bring down the System for good.
Of course, it isn’t so simple. The System-gods are aware of him now, powerful and ancient forces waiting to pounce on any mistake — and perfectly willing to murder millions of innocents for even a perceived injury against him. Cast as a monster to the denizens of the System, Cato has to bribe, intimidate, or convince anyone he can to be on his side instead, because the goal is still simple and clear.
He has to crash the System.

This book had one of the grandest scales of action that I've read in a long, long time. Given the high-tech, post-human abilities of the main character, it grew to millions of worlds and hundreds of thousands of cloned versions of the original cast. The author did a really good job of keeping a clear storyline going while bouncing around the universe and spanning many years.

From a plot perspective, this book was very well designed and executed. However, the very nature of the story meant that we didn't have the same emotional intensity that comes from following the story of a single person or small group of people. Plus, there's a plot choice at the end that I wish he would have gone big and he went small with the solution (can't say more without spoilers). So I enjoyed this series, but I give it 4 stars, not 5.

The author sent me a copy and asked for a review, but I’d actually already pre-ordered my own. I’m glad I did, because Inadvisably Compelled usually delivers on his promises. In this case, that means the utter destruction of the magical, galaxy-spanning System. The way he takes it out is good, although I wish he’d dug in more. There are a couple of places (the bad guys achieving godhood, the side-kick’s bringing people into their conspiracy) where success came too easily. I did appreciate it, though, when those self-satisfied bumblers vanished up their own asses.
