A Storm of Death and Desire Two spellbinding novellas in the Lady of Darkness THE REAPER and UNRELENTING WINDS
Unrelenting Winds
For centuries, the Great War that divided the realm has been over. The Fae Courts and mortal lands alike have been rebuilding, trying to move forward in a world they no longer recognize. When the Wind Princess requests a meeting with Prince Briar Drayce, ruler of the Water Court, he naturally accepts. He’s always kept the peace, but the aloof princess makes a request of him that may be too much. Now he must decide if it’s worth the risk of angering the Fae Courts, the realm, the gods, and more.
The Reaper
Before he was the Fire Court Third, he was the Reaper.
And before he was the Reaper, he was her Ash Rider. Moranna. The Baroness of a colony hidden away on the Southern Islands.
Rayner has always believed that she works tirelessly to keep some the Fae safe.
When he learns the Baroness's darkest secrets he vows to put an end to her and everything she has created on the islands. But he finds himself the center of a curse as punishment for his rebellion.
The path back to vengeance is wrought with violence, grief, and unexpected allies, and Rayner knows better than Some nightmares never end.

Melissa is a dark fantasy romance author who loves coffee, dragons, and constantly rearranging her bookshelves. She spends her time writing, reading, and homeschooling her three boys in the Middle-of-Nowhere, North Dakota, where she lives with her boys, husband, dogs, multiple barn cats, and chickens on a small farmstead. She is constantly trying to convince her husband they need to add goats and ducks to the mix, and one day, she'll succeed.
She's not here much, so if you're looking to connect, check out the following:
If you love our characters from LOD and want answers to some of the breadcrumbs left in the main series, then I recommend you read these novellas as they provide insight into their back stories and show how some of our group first got together 👍🏻
“Worrying about something that may not even come to pass steals joy from the present.” Reading this novella AFTER the series is both hurtful & healing. I’m going to miss these characters so much.
Melissa K. Roehrich said “you survived five books of emotional destruction, here’s a novella collection as a treat” and I fell for it completely like the hopeless romantasy girlie I am. The Reaper had me saying “oh NOoooooOooo” out loud to my kindle multiple times as Rayner’s backstory recontextualized everything I thought I knew, and Unrelenting Winds introduced Prince Briar and the Wind Princess with a slow burn so charged I was invested approximately three pages in against my own will.
It’s companion novella , not a main installment but telling Melissa K. Roehrich she can’t make you emotionally attached to brand new characters in novella length is apparently a dare she takes very personally and will through down the gauntlet.
Heartbreaking and yet beautiful. This is a must have read if you enjoyed the Lady of Darkness series, and it definitely needs to be talked about more 🥰
The Reaper - 4 stars Rayner's story was just as heartbreaking as i anticipated. I loved getting to know his past despite how awful it was and seeing how he slotted into the fire court. He deserved better ):
Unrelenting Winds - 5 stars This one took me by surprise - i did not expect to love this as much as i did! I giggled so many times. The friendship and love that blossoms between Briar and Ashtine was incredible. The way she talks and the the way he takes the time to listen and learn. The dry humor. This was the perfect novella and i love them even more now.
Heat Factor: It’s a slow burn but there is heat from multiple relationship plots
Character Chemistry: It has very fated mates and world dominion takeover partners vibes
Plot: Scarlett is a miserable assassin who is being forced to play nice in society until she meets the new trainer for the king’s elite forces, and obviously nothing is as it seems, powers collide, acceptance of darkness, etc, etc…
Overall: It was a diverting series with the usual plot holes and weaknesses, but thoroughly enjoyable. Side characters were two thumbs up.
This is a pretty classic Romantasy. Dark, devious assassin warrior lady meets someone she can’t beat on the sparring mat, a ferocious battle of wits and wills commences, and next thing you know she’s taking over the world and killing all the bad guys, but with flair. Also, she’s got a team of misfit best friends who are all willing to die for her, and her enemy is her fated mate. Classic stuff, if you’re into this kind of thing you’ll know the drill.
I think it’s important to point out that this series does end on kind of an unfinished note, and that’s for a good reason: there is a related, subsequent series called “The Legacy” which overlaps with this one and features several character cameos (like Eliza!!), which I also read, because I have virtually no ability to stop these series once I start them. You can read them out of order or on their own, but I would highly recommend starting in chronological order (which is technically Scarlett’s brother’s book first, then the Lady of Darkness Series, and finally the Legacy Series). I suspect there’s another series coming because The Legacy Series has yet to settle on a firm conclusion to some of the drama that bled through all the books.
A nice little insight into Briar and Ashton's relationship. This story made me love Briar all the more and understand Ashton much better.
Stream of thoughts as I listen (spoilers): -Yay Briar POV at last. -Sawyer...Nakoa.. my heart. -I like seeing Ashton's rough edges. -AND an Ashton POV? You spoil me! -People do forget to eat! Phhf. -I would go crazy if I heard voices in my head all the time too. Poor girl is plagued. -Briar fumbling. So cute. -"And your studies included geography"? Bahaha. -So many dead people. -Wow kinda creepy peeping prince. -Ew I have to suffer Tarek AGAIN?! This is the literal definition of torture. He's not even faking it well. -The halk brushing up on Briar. ♡ -She is definitely on the spectrum. -Damn we've never been able to see her power. Sky stone? -Briar!!!! ♡♡♡ Oh my lord. -"Meet me on the shores before the sun wakes" -Okay she creeps too so I guess it's okay. lol -"A prince of water will fall" Heart break.. "it was my honor" -"Noted. Where the fuck is she?!" ♡ -Oh goodness, idk who I love more.. Briar or Raz -They kept their relationship a secret for like 10 years... -"You are delicate in the cold" hahaha. -Cyrus was in charge for years after the Queen disappeared and another three years in the mortal lands. I didn't really realize how much he was left in charge of the fire court. -Aw little did they know of their future. ♡
The Lady of Darkness series easily ranks among my top reads. It’s the kind of story that hooks you early and then keeps tightening its grip with every twist, reveal, and hidden layer.
One of my favorite elements is the heroine’s journey. Watching her start without magic, only to discover not just power—but extraordinary power—is incredibly satisfying. It’s that slow-burn realization that builds into something fierce and unforgettable.
The plot is packed with mystery and intrigue, constantly keeping you theorizing and second-guessing what you think you know. Every book adds another piece to the puzzle, and just when you feel like you’re close to figuring it out… there’s another twist waiting.
What really sets this series apart is how the characters and their individual stories weave together. Each perspective adds depth, and the connections don’t just stay within this series—they expand into spin-offs, creating a larger, interconnected world. The more you read, the more everything clicks into place, revealing just how intricate and thoughtfully built the story truly is.
If you love fantasy that keeps your mind engaged, your emotions invested, and rewards you for paying attention, this series is absolutely worth the read.
Last mini novela and I just feel empty without them in my life anymore. I love briar and ashtine so much! I wish we could also have gotten a Glimpse of their future I would have love that so much! But I’m very grateful with everything I got and the everything I saw. I always wonder how her gift work, how the winds talk to her Now that I know, I understand so much about the she talks. She has so many answers in at the same time doesn’t have anything, She has so much information at the same time you’re just assumptions, Glimpses of what it could be. And I just know that that must be the most maddening thing ever! And to know that she knew from the beginning that a water court prince would die break my heart! This was such a very cute little novella! I will forever miss this world with all my heart and soul!
Oh how much I love this world. Regarding this specific novella I already read The Reaper and voiced my opinion in another review. The Unrelenting Winds story of this novella was totally new for me, though, and I absolutely loved it. I loved the way Briar and Ashtine fell in love with each other and how Briar took the time to understand and get to know Ashtine on a deeper level. It was literally perfect and I wished we got to see this part of their story earlier during the Lady of Darkness series. You really get an insight into their relationship and life before Scarlett came along and it really adds to the whole found family storyline of the whole series. This novella really needs more hype and praise because it's a great addition to the world.
It was absolutely lovely seeing more of the stories from some of the main characters in the Lady Of Darkness series, Rayner's story was heartbreaking as I expected it would be but it helps to understand how he became the beautiful soul he doesn't think he is, honestly I would love a novella or him to be included in a future story where he a Tula find his mate as I think I'd absolutely melt! Out of the two stories in this book I didn't think I'd enjoy Briar and Ashtin's so much (only because I adore Rayner) but it was beautiful 💗I love them both but Briar was so so sweet,
I didn’t think I could love the characters from Darkness anymore but this book proved me wrong. The Reaper had me tearing up so much. I loved that not only did we get to see Rayner’s past in more detail but also the foundations of Sorin’s inner court (I will take all the Cyrus content I can get!). Then we did a complete 180 and I spent the second half with a smile on my face and kicking my feet because Ashtine and Briar made my heart melt🥹. Such a beautiful bonus to an already amazing series this novella was everything I didn’t know I needed!
Thank you SO much, @harlequinaus, for gifting me this awesome novella by @melissa_k_roehrich! ✨️🩷
Anything Melissa writes, I will read and I will love and devour it! ✨️🩷
Winds of Darkness is two novellas in one book. So much heartbreak and feelings. This was wonderful. I enjoyed both stories so much. It was just beautiful to read more. This series is a top series of mine and it was a romantasy that I adore! So good!
I absolutely love this author...the way she writes has such depth for the characters. I love the flow of the internal world of the male and female protagonists...the description in the world building is brilliant.
In this volume I'm with the reaper and holding my breath. I m feeling the wards as thier crossed and got my hands clenched in hope of death to the enemy...
The Reaper I knew this novella was going to break my heart. I absolutely loved Rayner in Lady of Darkness. His backstory is soo sad. But makes total sense as to why he is the way he is.
Unrelenting Winds This was soo good I loved watching Briar and Ashtine become friends and then more. There is great banter between the two. I enjoyed their characters before but now I feel more connected to them knowing what they have been through to get to where they are.
I loved being back in the Lady of Darkness world. This installment is quite short and reads more like a companion piece, as it’s essentially a combination of two novellas.
The first dives into the backstory of the mysterious Reaper Ash Rider, giving readers more insight into who he is and the experiences that shaped him. The second focuses on the romance between Briar Drayce, the ruler of the Water Court, and Ashtine Evermorn, the Wind Princess. It was really satisfying to finally get more depth to their story and understand the connection between them.
Even though it’s brief, it adds some nice layers to the overall series and expands the world in a meaningful way. If you enjoy character backstories and extra lore from the Lady of Darkness universe, this is a great little addition.
I did enjoy this book. I loved rayners back story. but I did struggle a little bit with Ashtine and briars back story. I dont know if its because I read the whole lady of darkness series first but if I could re read the whole series I think I would read briar and ashtines story first then the lady of darkness series, then rayners story after lady of embers
Winds of Darkness is another fab addition to the Lady of Darkness series. Featuring two novellas, THE REAPER and UNRELENTING WINDS, along with a Q & A with the author, it was great to look into the past of some favourite characters from the series.
🌬️ Unrelenting Winds 🌊 It was so good to find out how Briar and Ashtine’s first got close. But what I really enjoyed more was seeing how Ashtine’s relationship with the winds worked. It gives you a better understanding of why she speaks and acts the way she does.
💀 The Reaper 💀 Not going to lie, I have always wanted to know Rayner’s backstory and The Reaper absolutely delivered. My heart broke for him in this story, but I also loved seeing how he met Sorin and ended up as his Third. This was my favourite of the two stories and it has me wishing it was the longer of the two!
Thank you to @harlequinaus and @melissa_k_roehrich for a #gifted copy to read.
Make sure you check her reading order on her website before you read the series! Two extremely good novellas in our Darkness series <3 first one is very dark and heavy, second one is light and beautiful. Ashtine became one of my favorite characters throughout the series and the Unrelenting Winds novella really solidified her up there as a solid #2 (after Scarlett of course).
So excited and the content is amazing but not enough. The shortest book ever hardly any chapters and cuts off with questions and answers from author ???? I feel cheated this could have been so much MORE
SPOILER ALERTS IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IN ORDER
BEAUTIFULLY DISAPPOINTED BUT INLY BY THE LENGTH OF THE BOOK … paid for half a book 😢🥰
This looks like these are the two novellas, which I technically already counted for, but I read the 7 bonus chapters as well and I’m counting this for those because that’s basically a novella in itself, absolutely loved this series. One of my all time favorites, became so attached to these characters and I’m so glad we got to see more into their lives in these short stories
Loved these two novellas. I absolutely fell in love with the Lady of Darkness series and there’s so many side characters within the series where we don’t really get to see much about their backgrounds, so I’m pleased Melissa wrote these novellas to give us more background on Rayner, Ashtine and Briar.
Definitely do check those trigger warnings, especially for Rayners story!
I loved this! It was so lovely to go back into this world, have the POV of these characters and learn more about their background. Heartbreaking, funny, not enough - I need more😆. Just love those universe
Rayners backstory was as heart breaking as I was expecting and I’d pay a lot of money for a book all about his happy ending! Having a novella for both seems unfair because I enjoyed Briar and Ashtine’s story more than I was expecting too!
Quick read it was nice to have a little insight into Rayner and his past truly heartbreaking. Briar and Ashtine are such a sweet couple so reading how they got together was a nice way to round up their story. I’m glad it read this.
I love the extra stories about other main characters. Seeing there character arcs come to life. And how they became what they are in the Lady of Darkness series! Definitely recommend reading this!!
