The Way of Kings: The Stormlight Archive
According to mythology, mankind used to live in 'The Tranquiline Halls': Heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers followed. The Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, the Shardblades. Led by ten angelic Heralds and ten orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won (or so the legends say).
Today the only remnants of those supposed battles are the Shardblades, the possession of which makes a man nearly invincible on the battlefield. The entire world is at war with itself - and has been for centuries since the Radiants turned against mankind. Kings strive to win more Shardblades, each secretly wishing to be the one who will finally unite all of mankind under a single throne.

The release of Wind and Truth in December 2024—the fifth and final book in the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive series—marks a significant milestone for me. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. Now is a great time to get into the Stormlight Archive since the first arc, which begins with Way of Kings, is complete.
During our crowdfunding campaign for the leatherbound edition of Words of Radiance, I announced a fifth Secret Project called Isles of the Emberdark, which came out in the summer of 2025. Coming December 2025 is Tailored Realities, my non-Cosmere short story collection featuring the new novella Moment Zero.
Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, came out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that saw the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Sunlit Man. These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.
November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. Now that the first arc of the Stormlight Archive is wrapped up, I’ve started writing the third era of Mistborn in 2025.
Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, four of the five Secret Projects, and various novellas, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.
I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, released in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.
Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the three stories in Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. These two novellas are also featured in 2025’s Tailored Realities. There’s a lot of material to go around!

“And you better survive son. Because I want some answers.”
The Way of Kings is the first book in The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. It is filled with intrigue, action and convoluted plots. I have heard a great amount of praise for this author and also this book, and finally decided to delve into the widely loved work of Sanderson.
This first half of the book introduces the reader to a vast cast spread over a large amount of PoV’s. But there are three among these who are the most prominent. There is the soldier, Kaladin. The scholar, Shallan. And the renowned general, Brightlord Dalinar. And then there are a number of smaller characters. The characters were varied and enjoyable and each presented a different location of the world to the reader that furthered the world building aspect of the book.
“Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.”
The plot had moments of a quick pace, but overall adapted a slower progression. Although that is likely to be because it is the first half of a story. The world was well built, the plot line is intriguing, and the slower pace did not result in a boring read at all.
“Life before Death.
Strength before Weakness.
Journey before Destination.”
I thoroughly enjoyed this first part to The Way of Kings and thought it to be a great opening half to a book. I am immediately moving onto part 2 of this book, and can then make a suitable judgement of how I feel about this opening to the series. But at this moment, I am loving it, and cannot wait to continue. Hopefully the start to a series I will adore.

This, though only part one of an entire book, was so epic that in itself it gains five stars. I don't believe I can name any other book - well apart from the magnificent Lord of the Rings - that while divided in parts retains its pulling power.
The world Sanderson creates is astonishing, populated by larger than life heroes, some anti-heroes and basically human beings who have varying motives for doing what they consider moral. Its an intriguing and satisfying world that drew me in and left me wanting more. Well it was only part one of a full novel.
The power of this work shall be elaborated upon further in my review of the second part. However it shall suffice to say bow that Sanderson may have one of the great epic fantasies on his hands here. So long as he knows how to properly conclude it. Yet for now this stands superb.
It has action scenes so brilliant they leave you racing through pages; it has mysterious spirits; supernatural powers abound; political movements and ceaseless - and almost pointless - wars; religious movements; intrigue and above all depth. For Sanderson creates a world here rather than simply paint a thin veneer for the reader to skim and admire. No he fills a world with such depth that the characters almost breathe, that you feel for the decisions they must make, that you question their motives and dealings. Yes this is a great work. Although I am yet to finish this as it stands.
Fully worth reading and perhaps (if all concludes nicely) my personal favourite epic fantasy. It certainly is immerse and addictive reading. To be properly extrapolated and enhanced with review two. In which I shall discuss the plot, the characters and everything Sanderson.
Review Update
I do not believe in altering to a great deal the words of the past. If you cannot allow something to stand then you should not set it in place to begin with. So to add to my humble original review I merely add the following points noted during my re-read.
1. There is a sense in this novel and in other novels by Sanderson that the characters all seem to have moments of tragic clarity about what they are doing in life. However, these moments are all part of the fall and rise and rise and fall of his characters. Sanderson does not create characters who border on the fringes of evil or good necessarily (though some of Jasnah's actions at the end of this book are suggestive of her particular morals) but he does create heroes - individuals who act according to what is heroic and right (not that they are perfect, but that they seek to perform actions for a greater good).
2. There is also a sense that many of Sanderson's magic systems seem to rely upon currency or some item of great value in order to work. For instance in Mistborn precious metals are the most powerful of the metals and coins are often used to enhance 'pushing' or 'pulling'. In Warbreaker it is the soul which harbours magic. In this novel it is gems and currency in connection which hold the power of the Stormlight. I see this as a metaphor of the magical transforming power of currency in a way.
3. Jasnah is one of the more interesting characters Sanderson has created. She provides him with a means to show the ways in which many other religious individuals view atheism or even agnosticism and I think this highlights a strength of his writing. Sanderson is someone who actively seems to think about ways he can prompt discussion about our world through other words and the fantastic. The argument between Jasnah and the King in this section of the entire book, about religion, shows a way in which some can look at God: that he serves only to provide moral meaning to the world. When for some we see that far more exists than merely morals.
4. I cannot help but note the similarities to US involvement in the Middle East and the Alethkar war against the Parshendi. As noted within this volume, the Alethkari people have come to almost live on the battlefront of the Shattered Plains and this is where the real fighting occurs. Some could say similarly about the wars of 100 years and 50 years ago or as I suggest, the wars in the Middle East today which lead to a sort of governmental presence of certain nations in that section of the world.
5. As with any kind of long slow series this starts off slow but the impressive part about it is the sheer detail and imagination of this work. For me it's clearly better than most fantasy out there but it tends to be a love it or hate it work and I'll use my last point to explain why I believe this is the case. I clearly love it, but then I love slow moving epics.
6. Characterisation tends to be a concern with readers - 'why should I care about the characters and their short story style struggles'? Well I personally love the two male characters of Kaladin and Dalinar and their struggles - the whole hero dynamic that continues throughout this entire novel. However, Shallan is a very frustrating character and I believe she is created to be such intentionally. There seems to be a subtle prompting from Sanderson (adverse to the unsubtle blasting of Shallan's dialogue) that Shallan is not as witty as she seems to think herself and that her cleverness is wasted on poor retorts and comments. In other words, she is intellectually strong (I think the story does enough to show us why and how) but emotionally weaker - due in part to, I believe, her lack of female role models in her life. In many ways she is shown to be more masculine than feminine therefore and it is, as mentioned, Jasnah who is the more interesting female character.

if this took me a month to read... i'm terrified for the rest of the series.
so far, all i am is confused, but i think i've got the spirit! 😭🙏
i'm slowly understanding all of the terms and concepts introduced in this book with little to no explanation, and honestly i'm proud of myself 😭

while dense and often confusing, i must admit it wasn't boring! and a boring book is one that i can never bring myself to enjoy. i think i can say i enjoyed this book, even if i didn't understand everything.
you can really tell when an author puts their whole heart and soul into their craft. this is DEFINITELY one of those cases. in the author's note, sanderson states that he spent around TWENTY YEARS writing this book. i'm literally shook. it definitely shows how much dedication went into creating the world and characters. there are the drawings of maps and sketches of the different races of people and wildlife interspersed within this book... it really keeps me immersed in the story and overall universe 🥹
while a bit jarring when we went from a big development in one of the first characters' pov to switching it up in part 2 to a new character, i do think it was the right choice. i was frustrated to leave one of my favourite characters' perspective, but dalinar and adolin's viewpoints were DEFINITELY needed.
obviously, this book was split into two parts in the format i have available, and the way the book ended was honestly a good choice on the author's part, as explained in the afterword.
with a wide range of characters and POV changes to add context and lore, i think this is one of if not the most complex and detailed fantasy universes out there. i'm eager to keep following my favourite characters, but the rest of this series is definitely daunting.

i seriously adored his character. determined and intelligent, his arc was so cool to watch. at the end there, he scared me for a bit, but i'm so excited to see where he goes next. the chapters of his childhood made my heart HURTTTT, he's just a babyyyy 😭💗 and i'm so scared for tien now. i fear i'll cry.
his integrity and diligence was so admirable, especially with his transformation of bridge four. i loved his interactions with rock and teft, they were adorable honestly 🥹
this man deserves so much better omg 💔 here's hoping that adolin will come save him or something, cuz literally FUCK gaz and kaladin's old masters. his story is so heartbreaking yet inspiring at the same time.

i honestly felt so bad for him, what with his brother and his declining mental state. who knows if it's a mental illness or actual visions from the divine?? not me. adolin is being too convincing.
the way he got the bout of nausea from the thrill disappearing... omg i felt like i was right there with him. the thrill of an exciting battle turned to mass murder and destruction... the way sanderson wrote that part was so masterful omg.

i felt both so bad for him and so annoyed at him, with both emotions regarding his actions towards his father. he was irritating me when he wasn't taking dalinar seriously, then i felt for him - having a father who appeared to slowly start losing it couldn't be easy at all. especially when you are the one having to pick up the pieces after his episodes.
i'm so eager to see where he goes from the end of part 2!! i just hope he doesn't mess everything up with his lack of restraint towards sadeas... maybe he and kaladin's stories will intertwine? IDK, WISHFUL THINKING... SOMEONE COME SAVE MY BOYYY 😭💗

while dense and pretty intense, the writing wasn't hard to follow. the new concepts were given a bit of explanation, and the descriptions painted a clear picture in my mind. honestly, i didn't expect to enjoy this as much as i did! i believe its status as one of the highest rated books on this app is very deserving!

while dense and often confusing, i must admit it wasn't boring! and a boring book is one that i can never bring myself to enjoy. i think i can say i enjoyed this book, even if i didn't understand everything.
you can really tell when an author puts their whole heart and soul into their craft. this is DEFINITELY one of those cases. in the author's note, sanderson states that he spent around TWENTY YEARS writing this book. i'm literally shook. it definitely shows how much dedication went into creating the world and characters. there are the drawings of maps and sketches of the different races of people and wildlife interspersed within this book... it really keeps me immersed in the story and overall universe 🥹
while a bit jarring when we went from a big development in one of the first characters' pov to switching it up in part 2 to a new character, i do think it was the right choice. i was frustrated to leave one of my favourite characters' perspective, but dalinar and adolin's viewpoints were DEFINITELY needed.
obviously, this book was split into two parts in the format i have available, and the way the book ended was honestly a good choice on the author's part, as explained in the afterword.
with a wide range of characters and POV changes to add context and lore, i think this is one of if not the most complex and detailed fantasy universes out there. i'm eager to keep following my favourite characters, but the rest of this series is definitely daunting.

i seriously adored his character. determined and intelligent, his arc was so cool to watch. at the end there, he scared me for a bit, but i'm so excited to see where he goes next. the chapters of his childhood made my heart HURTTTT, he's just a babyyyy 😭💗 and i'm so scared for tien now. i fear i'll cry.
his integrity and diligence was so admirable, especially with his transformation of bridge four. i loved his interactions with rock and teft, they were adorable honestly 🥹
this man deserves so much better omg 💔 here's hoping that adolin will come save him or something, cuz literally FUCK gaz and kaladin's old masters. his story is so heartbreaking yet inspiring at the same time.

i felt both so bad for him and so annoyed at him, with both emotions regarding his actions towards his father. he was irritating me when he wasn't taking dalinar seriously, then i felt for him - having a father who appeared to slowly start losing it couldn't be easy at all. especially when you are the one having to pick up the pieces after his episodes.
i'm so eager to see where he goes from the end of part 2!! i just hope he doesn't mess everything up with his lack of restraint towards sadeas... maybe he and kaladin's stories will intertwine? IDK, WISHFUL THINKING... SOMEONE COME SAVE MY BOYYY 😭💗

That's cool, split the book not on one but TWO cliffhangers! Part II cannot come in the mail fast enough, I knew that starting this without owning the second part was beyond foolish.
This is not a review, since I only have read HALF the book (at 590 pages that is insane to say out loud), but just some thoughts and notes.
The world needs more Kaladins. Every chapter of his made me FEEL. Really feel, tears in eyes and everything. LOVE HIM.
Szeth (there better be more of him) breaks my heart.
Axious?? Like come on - how can somebody be so cool with just ONE CHAPTER (hats off to Sanderson, per usual).
Shallan - ehhhh .......

It takes 17 hours of flight to go from KSA to USA...I know because I've been on one..and it's not direct...you need to stop at one point and sometimes 2 or 3 stops

the first 2 hours are fun
and then it hits you
how long the journey is
how tired you're feeling
how much ache your legs are getting
you're hating the food
hating the person sitting next to you
the noises, the chatter
you want to sleep but can't
you want to eat but feel nauseated
you want to stretch but the narrow aile is occupied
and you start hating your decision
and you comfort yourself by counting the hours saying it's all going to be over soon
but the seatbelt sign flares because turbulence from hell is happening and you regret your decision more
and just when you think it's over
the captain declares that the airport is not ready for the plane and we have to circle for one more hour
you land with Zero energy, zero excitement, zero tolerance and all you want now is to reach your hotel and sleep for 24 hrs
so excuse me because No! it's not Journey before Destination😡😡😡

sure the first couple of chapters were hooking, but then it kept going in circles on and on and on repeating the same narrative on and on and on
Dalinar went coco after his brother's murder
he is seeing visions, or is he? over and over he wants us to trust Sadea!! fuck him
Kaladin is suicidal and wants to take everyone with him but for some reason, he is rewarded this cute spren that is "in love with him?!"
Shallan, I didn't care about her one bit
the only one I was excited to read about was Szeth and he was just given very few chapters
the POVs were confusing with switching to unrelevent characters
and THE OVERLY DESCRIPTIVE PARAGAPHS!!!! My God! do i need to know the details of the garments and the shape of every rock and the cracks of every wall!!!
I think it's because male authors like Brandon write as if their books are going to be turned into a movie or series and they don't want anything to be left for the imagination of the director!!!!
someone once told me that I should treat boon 1 - mind you! not part 1! nooo! book1 - as a prologue!!!!!! what the fuck!!!!!!!!!

- I liked the LOOOONG epilogue
- very strong first chapter - Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinobar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king will always be a good memorable first line
- everything was going smoothly until Shallan appeared. I strongly believe that Brandon Sanderson doesn't know how to write "Women". IN FACT, I'm skimming all her chapters from now on. I DONT LIKE HER.
- there are overly descriptive details about everything and anything to the point of boredom
- I'm pretty sure BS is influenced by anime and Manga fantasy
-I am confused by Kaladin's storyline! One chapter he is this 18 yr old (seriously!) Fearless captain who no one dies in his brigade, and the next chapter ???????? What happened????
And stretching and stretching.
- i feel Syl could have a big story behind her

it's basically a repetition of Part 1 with the exception of few pages from very few chapters

Alethkar is a Patriarchal Misogynistic world! Yes women are the only gender that reads and writes but when you take into account that these skills are frowned upon and looked down at by the Men of the world, it equals "women belong in the kitchen" narrative.
I just want this part to end😴🥱

I’ve just finished Part One (yay!)
I’m not going to do a full review because technically I haven’t finished the book and this is Part one but I am ready to share some thoughts so far;
- Kaladin is 1000000% my favourite character so far and I’m intrigued okay I can’t lie
- Shallan and Jasnah I would like to see more simply because we haven’t had as many chapters for them but I’m liking the dynamic between the two and where part one has left off I’m like WHAT
- So far I’m enjoying Dalinar as a character and again I need more answers of what is going on with him and that group
- The last person to touch up on is Szeth, I’m not going to lie I’m SO ridiculously interested to find out what’s going with him, like I genuinely have no idea and that first chapter was so atmospheric and so well done I was legit blown away and hooked from the start!
I can’t wait to start Part Two next month!

What is there to say about The Way of Kings other than that it’s a masterpiece of fantasy writing? I certainly wouldn’t recommend starting your Sanderson journey with The Stormlight Archive, but once you get here you’ll understand.
This is my first time rereading The Way of Kings and I’m glad I did. I first read it three years ago and have since forgotten a lot of the details. One of the most interesting aspects I noticed during my reread was my reaction to the novel itself. The first time around, I was so invested in Kaladin and the Shattered Plains. I could not get enough of Kaladin and every chapter spent away from him and his journey was time lost. However, this time around I was screaming for more Shallan and Jasnah chapters. There are far to few of them, but they serve the larger plot of the Cosmere. Every line of each of these chapters feels as if they have been written carefully and precisely. To the people who dislike Shallan, why?
Apart from the incredible character development, intricate world building, and the spectacular pacing (did I use enough adjectives?), I think Sanderson’s best accomplishment in The Way of Kings is his foreshadowing. Every revelation and reveal feels earned. If you’re paying attention, none of this should come out of left field.
The Sanderson Avalanche is real, especially at the end of The Way of Kings. Everything is moving along at a fairly quick pace when all of a sudden the plot explodes and readers are racing to the end with not enough pages left in the best possible way. To the people who read this when it was first published in 2011 then had to wait until 2014 for the sequel, hats off to you. You’re the real MVP. I guess I know the feeling now that I’ve waited 3 years for Rhythm of War after Oathbringer.
Overall, The Way of Kings is one of the most incredible opening fantasy novels I’ve ever read. Come to think of it, the only other novel of comparable calibre is A Game of Thrones. Strap in, buckle up, and throw your hands in the air because Sanderson will bring you on the ride of your life with realistic characters and a world so vast and intricate you won’t know your way around.

The Way of Kings Part One is a phenomenal introduction with multiple characters that are multidimensional and in depth world building.
Kaladin was by far my favourite of the bunch introduced in Part One. He's inspiring and resourceful with considerable influence despite is lack of awareness of his own qualities. His journey through this first half of the story is emotionally and physically draining and I loved every second of it.
Shallan spoke to me more than any other character. She has endless wit that comes out most often at inappropriate moments. Her thirst for knowledge is unquenchable, which made reading her chapters interesting because the reader learns much about the world.
Danilar and Adolin took me a bit to warm up to. Their chapters were the most confusing at the beginning because of all of the names and relationships to each other. Once I got a handle on who everyone was, I found myself thoroughly enjoying their interactions. I cannot wait to see what happens next with Danilar.
Also, HOID!

The characters are all or mostly fleshed out with complex personalities and conflicting ideologies. The Way of Kings is best consumed knowing little about the story, hence my vague review.

Sau cel puțin asta ar putea fi impresia bieților podari, carne de tun într-un război al cărui sens nu prea îl înțeleg pe deplin.

Eu cred că se apropie de geniu cu această serie pe care o consider de căpătâi și definitorie pentru Sanderson, un epic-fantasy cu nenumărate ramificații, cu un sistem de magie complet nou, cu personaje variate, adesea destul de nuanțate și pe care ori ai vrea să le strângi de gât că nu evoluează sau că acționează anapoda, ori să le mângâi pentru cât de hain se poartă alții cu ele (Kaladin mi se pare un exemplu perfect pentru afirmațiile de mai sus). În rest, avem o planetă bântuită de furtuni colosale, care rad tot în cale, unde se înfruntă două popoare în urma unui presupus atentat pus la cale de unul dintre ele, care a trimis un asasin de elită să-l ucidă pe regele celuilalt popor. Iar fratele și apropiații regelui ucis au cerut răzbunare. Și și-au luat cristalarmurile și cristalsăbiile, au chemat poporul la oaste pe Câmpiile Sfărâmate și se lupă de vreo șase ani la momentul în care începe de fapt povestea lui Kaladin în calitate de podar. Am crezut că notele de 4.50 pe care le au o parte din romanele sale sunt mult umflate de popularitatea sa, însă seria Stormlight Archive arată că Sanderson a ajuns la maturitatea necesară scrierii unei serii de o asemenea dimensiune. Dacă ar lăsa-o mai ușor cu seriile pentru puștani și burțile steampunk ale seriei Mistborn, inutile după părerea mea, și s-ar concentra pe seria de față, care va cuprinde zece volume (!), atunci cred că prin 2025 vom avea cea mai importantă serie fantasy a mileniului trei, poate chiar și peste ASOIAF. „La început de februarie, când prin unele locuri nămeții erau până la geam, iar prin altele se ruga lumea să cadă măcar un fulg de nea, noi, la Clubul de carte Paladin, discutam, după ce fuseserăm nevoiți să amânăm ediția cu o săptămână, despre o poveste în care parcă plouă întruna. A venit așadar momentul uneia dintre cele mai iubite serii fantasy ale ultimului deceniu, începută în 2010 de nimeni altul decât prolificul Brandon Sanderson: Arhiva Luminii de Furtună, programată să aibă zece volume, din care au apărut deja patru (la ei), iar al cincilea se pregătește să vină la finalul acestui an sau la începutul lui 2024, pentru că mașinăria de scris Sanderson, cel care a creat o adevărată industrie din această îndeletnicire și care anul trecut i-a lăsat pe mulți cu gura căscată când a strâns doar vreo patruzeci de milioane de dolari printr-o campanie de crowdfunding menită doar să demonstreze că se poate, dacă se vrea, și că marile entități care publică an de an cărți ar trebui să le arate ceva mai mult respect celor de pe urma cărora trăiesc și ele, deci Sanderson, cum scriam înainte de această lungă paranteză, nu se ocupă, deși, după umila mea părere, ar trebui să o facă, doar de această serie, ci se ține și de multe altele și le acordă pe rând importanță nu după cum bate vântul sau îi vine neapărat inspirația, ci și după cum doresc fanii.

Eu cred că se apropie de geniu cu această serie pe care o consider de căpătâi și definitorie pentru Sanderson, un epic-fantasy cu nenumărate ramificații, cu un sistem de magie complet nou, cu personaje variate, adesea destul de nuanțate și pe care ori ai vrea să le strângi de gât că nu evoluează sau că acționează anapoda, ori să le mângâi pentru cât de hain se poartă alții cu ele (Kaladin mi se pare un exemplu perfect pentru afirmațiile de mai sus). În rest, avem o planetă bântuită de furtuni colosale, care rad tot în cale, unde se înfruntă două popoare în urma unui presupus atentat pus la cale de unul dintre ele, care a trimis un asasin de elită să-l ucidă pe regele celuilalt popor. Iar fratele și apropiații regelui ucis au cerut răzbunare. Și și-au luat cristalarmurile și cristalsăbiile, au chemat poporul la oaste pe Câmpiile Sfărâmate și se lupă de vreo șase ani la momentul în care începe de fapt povestea lui Kaladin în calitate de podar. Im Gegensatz zu Mistborn habe ich den Einstieg hier in die Sturmlicht-Chroniken genießen können. Eine abschließende Beurteilung des Buches „The Way of Kings“ ist aber eigentlich zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht möglich, da der deutsche Verlag mal wieder auf die gewinnmaximierende Idee kam, die einzelnen Originalbücher analog GOT in zwei Bücher zu teilen.
Ansonsten kann ich nur wenig an der bisherigen Fantasy aussetzen. Sanderson ist sehr phantasievoll hinsichtlich der Ausgestaltung seiner Welt und dem Magiesystem. Beide Punkte gefielen mir auch schon bei Mistborn. Allerdings sind die Charaktere in diesem Buch wesentlich interessanter und ambivalenter als bei Mistborn, das für mich mehr auf eine jüngere Leserschaft zielt. Wenn es etwas zu kritisieren gibt, dann eine gewisse Handlungsarmut auf diesen ersten 900 Seiten. Sanderson lässt sich viel Zeit mit dem Entwickeln seiner Fantasywelt. Für derartig epische Werke mag ich das auch halbwegs verstehen. Gelangweilt habe ich mich nicht, aber ich wurde nun auch nicht gerade durch permanente Plottwists zum suchtähnlichen Weiterlesen animiert.

This book is quiet hard for me to review.
And not only because it is "only" the first part of a book that is supposed to be one big huge one.
So lets just list a bit of what i was feeling:
- the world
The thing i really, really, REALLY love in this book is that WOMEN are the scholars in this world.
How rare is that to find in books?
So clearly LOVE that.
The magic is interesting as well but honestly i have not yet gotten a great understanding or "feel" for it yet because while we get some explanations in the overall view of how it all works and how it functions we didn't yet get a clear explanation, still we got enough that i am interesting in wanting to read more and more to learn more and understand more with the explanations we get sprinkled throughout the plot.
- its a slower start and it takes quiet a few pages to actually get a feel and for me to get actually interested in the story. What helped me was that i was buddy reading this book and so having that "Push" to continue and read a specific number of chapters and discussing the world building, the characters and just generally having someone to talk to about the book helped me continue to push through the pages that seemed to slow down a bit.
- i LOVE one of the main characters -Kaladin- while i don't feel a huge amount towards anyone else. I mean i enjoy the character Szeth as well BUT he has such a small part in this book and so far into the story that while i would love to hear more about him and get really into his story we don't get that in this book so i have no idea what to actually think about him yet.
I do think that Sanderson builds nice characters overall but i also wish we would get a bit more of a streamline character explanations or building in this book.
Especially for Kaladin his story jumps between "now" and 5 to 7 years ago. Which in some ways is fine, but in others i kind of wish we would just get a good amount of pages dedicated to one specific character so that we learn more of and from that specific person.
Also can i just mention that while i really enjoy Kaladin why the heck is he portrayed as this young man? Why is he not older? that would make so much more SENSE to me.
(I already talked the ear of my buddy read partner on that topic and she didn't mind the age, so maybe that i just really a me thing -yet again!)
i never understand why authors have some characters be clearly too young for the kind of life experience and story they give them and to me Kaladin is that kind of character.
Now i am just rambling.
All in all the characters are nice but it would have been nice to get more development from most if not all of them BUT i also understand why Sanderson didn't give that yet because it is the first book of a supposed to be HUGE series. So clearly he can't give away everything right from the start. Still i can wish and complain right here about it... so that is what i am doing!

which is fantastic. I enjoy Sanderson's writing. I mostly enjoy how he writes both males and females, i enjoy his worlds and the fantastical elements he writes.
So if you love his writing style? This book will be an easy read for you!
Overall?
Its a nice start.
A bit slow in some places, but overall interesting and one of those "sucks you in and makes you want to continue reading to just get a clue on what the heck is going on" kinds of books.
I am interested to see where Sanderson will take this story.

I couldn't really get into this book and finally decided to take Part 2 back to the library without reading it. I know Sanderson is loved by many fantasy fans but I just don't find him or his stories enticing or gripping. Apparently Brandon Sanderson is not for me.

Toffee. That’s how I saw shardplate. Mystical armour that had a dirty translucence to it. I like the concept.
The world of Roshar is masterfully created from its culture to its religions to its people and how the high storms shape the land and literally effect how creatures and life evolves. Sanderson’s world building is top notch. So after this praise why the low score?
The Way of Kings is an epic volume (and volume is the right word) about … well here’s the thing, I thought it was about an assassin, then I thought it was about a lowly soldier in the army before I realised that it was about Kaladin - an officer turned slave and Shallan – a minor noble woman. THEN I thought it was about Dalinar - a concerned General. The point is that Sanderson introduces a few characters and takes his time doing it. Shallan and Kaladin become the two main characters but just when I felt like the story was going somewhere, Sanderson introduces another main character. I found this to be terribly frustrating. Just when I’d started to make an emotional connection to the character it felt like I was re-starting the book (and this was around page 150).
After a mercilessly slow build up and further detraction from the now three main characters in the form of interludes, I finally got to chapter 17 (page 256) a chapter that rewards the reader for the time invested in getting this far. However, beyond this point the pace moves back to a crawl broken up with more interludes and flashback chapters – pages and pages often illustrating very minor points.
I found the character of Shallan to be clever but boring and perhaps the author thought so too. Shallan starts as a major character but her last point of view chapter is at page 128 and then we don’t see her again until page 499. Why? Her objective is fairly straight forward and plot says she can’t achieve that objective until the end of the book.
A lot of pointless chapters, info dumps and stage direction littered this book with far too many words that broke up action sequences and dialogue which I found to be jarring. I was really looking forward to this book. I wanted to like this book, but at too many stages I wanted to put the book down. About a 5th of this book was brilliant and engaging – a real page turner, but sadly not enough for me to invest in continuing to read the series.

Zbog jedne pogrešne odluke biva prodat u roblje. Kasnije će ga otkupiti vojska jednog od kneževa i dati mu dužnost mostara. Za mostare se kaže: "Mostar koji preživi nije izvršio svoju dužnost.". Sil je vetar-spren koji postaje Kalov pratilac. Sprenove privlače ljudska osećanja. Daće sve od sebe da mu pomogne u pronalaženju motiva za dalju borbu.

"Great story and I cannot wait to read the second part. I think I was not able to give it 5 stars because of the lack of action at times (very few chapters though) and the fact that it does sometimes jump from a character story to another quite abruptly. But overall a master piece - and I now understand the rave about it! Very good book."

This is the first part of the first instalment in The Stormlight Archives.
Despite regarding this book an absolute masterpiece, I can understand the hesitancy of others to revere it in quite the same way. Sanderson spends large portions of this book informing the reader about the convoluted magical system, the geographical disparities, the social hierarchy and ruling classes, the non-human entities, the politics of war, the history that this war has ravaged upon the lands, and so, so much more. I found none of this information ‘dumped’ upon the reader but it was overwhelming to know that there was consistently some more facet about this world to learn, on every single page. I found this utterly fascinating and it only made me more immersed in this epic creation, rather than alienating me from the concurrent scenes of action.
As well as this abundance of information imparted about the kingdom, this also delivered the same amount for the three individuals who provided their perspectives into it. Interludes and flashbacks interrupted the chronological order of events to deliver the reader a slowly drip-fed understanding for who these people were and what made them the individuals the reader is initially introduced to. The characters themselves also delivered facts about their previous selves throughout their interaction with others, which meant that every area of this masterpiece was continually growing on every line, not just on every page, as I stated above!
And for all this knowledge, the action still was allowed to dominate. Scenes of battle or scenes of learning were provided the same detailed focus and despite the intricacies of both, Sanderson never left his readers feeling a step behind the events unfurling.

Cât de frumoasă, fantastică și minunată a fost cartea asta!
Dacă prima jumătate a volumului mi s-a părut a fi mai mult o mise-en-scène destinată familiarizării cititorilor cu personajele și întregul univers, fiecare pagină care a urmat a fost GENIALĂ: creaturi misterioase, războinici, legende și credințe străvechi, furtuni care bântuie și pustiesc ținuturile, plante conștiente, asasini care pot manipula realitatea fizică… What else could you ask for?

Честно казано все още не мога да кажа защо давам толкова висока оценка. Да, героите са страшно интересни, светът, ако не друго, то поне е странен, кхъм, уникален, исках да кажа. Но скоростта е... голяма пречка. Да, неща се случват, но в рамките на 1050 страници, доста бавно. Но стилът на Сандерсън винаги ми е бил приятен за четене, а и накрая като се задействаха нещата, определено ахвах не веднъж и дваж. Толкова засега, по-подробно ревю ще има другия месец.

Phew! For a little while back there I thought I was gonna have to give this a 4.5 rating (which would have been a first for me to give a BS novel anything less than a 5). But thankfully no and all is right in the world, those last two hundred pages definitely brought the story back into line for me.

Wow, das scheint ein mächtiges Epos zu sein. 🤯 Und ich stehe erst am Anfang. Mal sehen wie weit ich mich durchkämpfe. Wunderbar erzählt, komplexes Magiesystem, toll beschriebene Charaktere … insbesondere Kaladin 👀♥️
Das Hörbuch ist auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert. Leider verpasst man dann aber die Illustrationen aus dem Buch.

Wow, das scheint ein mächtiges Epos zu sein. 🤯 Und ich stehe erst am Anfang. Mal sehen wie weit ich mich durchkämpfe. Wunderbar erzählt, komplexes Magiesystem, toll beschriebene Charaktere … insbesondere Kaladin 👀♥️
Das Hörbuch ist auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert. Leider verpasst man dann aber die Illustrationen aus dem Buch.
