The cover teasing the return of Übel, Land and Sense?! Can't wait.

Update: They were on the volume cover, but only appeared in the last two chapters, how mean. Please give me more Übel + Land in the next volume, for I am, umm ... very interested in their relationship.

another great volume, but mostly filler imo until the last 30 pgs! it makes me so sad to see the “x years since the death of himmel the hero” at the beginning of each chapter get higher🥲

Another fantastic volume

Even the side characters in here are so fun to read. Always glad to see more of Himmel, too. This series remains one of my absolute favorites.

A bonus star for the first chapter and what might be Himmel's finest hour so far.

The rest of the book lags though. In the middle, we have two digressions with stories about a mercenary who needs help and a village mayor with a secret. Then the final chapters kick off a long arc of political intrigue as Imperial forces conspire against the Continental Magic Association with an assassination plot. It's all ho-hum James Bond-ish antics with undercover agents, secret missions, and sinister characters -- this sort of change of pace is not what I'm looking for in this series -- but at least some familiar characters get to make a reappearance.

Another release, another perfect volume of Frieren. I’ll even forgive them for that ridiculous cat-ear bit since we got the amazing visual of stern Frieren in an apron elsewhere.

They even give a thin, yet believable, justification for the mimic running gag. There’s no need for any explanation, but that’s the sort of care that goes into this series.

I think one reason this series works is because it hums along, yet not at a particularly hurried pace. It typically doesn’t linger too long in its various arcs, instead using them and the series’ staple vignettes to keep things feeling more fleshed out than they otherwise would be.

The time travel arc is quickly resolved, thankfully. I was worried we’d be spending a lot more time in the wheezy mind control cliches than we do. Plus it gives a character an atypical chance to shine and the solution as a whole is pretty unique.

That quick resolution doesn’t make it feel shallow at all; there is definitely some lingering concern about potential effects rippling out that may or may not come back. It also leaves with a rather nice aside by Himmel that I found poignant in its simplicity.

As always, the nature of time and memory is at the fore and it’s such a deliciously deep well that it allows for both the silly and the serious at the same time. The statue arc is deeply goofy, but it has an emotional heart to it that’s hard to beat.

Stark and Fern continue to make perfect companions for Frieren, helping to give the flashbacks more depth by contrasting both the state of the world and the state of Frieren herself between various time periods. Stark’s birthday is an aside, but a well-realized one.

It’s also a terribly smart series, written with a strong sense of what it wants to accomplish. The last arc this volume neatly feeds off another that seemed a bit of a throwaway, but really isn’t. And it brings back some previous characters, another welcome wrinkle (especially given the chemistry between the two of them).

Frieren remains the gold standard by which I judge manga and it may very well hold that position forever, provided it doesn’t wear out its welcome. So far, it hasn’t let me down once.

5 stars - beautiful, silly, wise, and clever. There aren’t many manga that can manage all that at the same time.

I thought I'd reviewed earlier volumes, but I can't find any of my posts (maybe Goodreads ate them), so just to summarize: this is a fantasy manga where an ages-old elf is revisiting scenes of her previous adventures with an entirely different generation of humans.

I feel like at this point I'm only reading this series out of inertia. My library keeps on buying it, I pick up new volumes when I see them. But there's just very little in this volume that's new, unique or interesting - it is just a retread of previous storylines. I really liked the original concept, but at this point I feel the series has run out of steam. I wouldn't put in a library request for more, let alone buy more with my own money. It's not bad! But I am a bit tired of it, and I really enjoyed the series initially, so this is a letdown.

I also keep wondering what the original page size was, because some of the art is absolutely minuscule in the US edition, to its detriment.

Continuing Himmel and Frieren's FREAKING WEDDING?! Our girl was so ready to kiss her groom even knowing it was an illusion. You'll never convince me they weren't harbouring true feelings for each other.

"It was a really nice dream..."

MY HEART! 😭🥰✨️

I enjoyed the fights with the demons, I did feel like it was anticlimactic but then again Frieren's already dealt with them before so the rematches weren't really needed.

I'm not going to recover from this arc....

Glad Frieren's back to the present with Fern and Stark, they need her as much as she needs them. It's kind of iconic that Frieren's searching for Heaven to fix mistakes and words left unsaid, but after her adventure to the past it almost feels like she now has the closure she was looking for. I think the reason for her journey will change soon, and it'll be more for growth and learning instead of making amends.
"There was something to gain after all."

"Perhaps she forgot about me a long time ago...but she's never left my thoughts, not even for a moment."
HIMMEL, THE YEARNER YOU ARE! 😭😍 He also knew Frieren would come see him at the end.

"Anyway, it doesn't cost anything. I feel like you lose out on something if you don't at least try this stuff." Explains why Frieren always falls for mimics, but I do like her optimism and hope.

The Liberation Festival was sweet! Sad that the stories of the Party of Heroes are being blown out of proportion, but their legacy is their own, and it's good that they believed that saving the world was credit enough. I'm proud of them even though they're not real😂🤭

Really, Frieren? Accepting a reward of a vase that'll give you nightmares? That's definitely going to come around and bite you in the ass. I just realised the beginning page of Frieren surrounded by onions was her nightmare because she's a picky eater🤣

"The world keeps changing and moving forward...for better or worse. But that's not a bad thing. You have the privilege to live a long life, and enjoying that change is a part of it." Wise words, Flamme.

Stark's birthday has already come around again! Fern's gift was sweet, and I liked their talk of perseverance. I do wonder what was in the box Frieren was going to give Stark?

Stark giving Fern and Frieren a piggyback at the same time😂

For some reason the Imperial Empire wants Frieren dead, they placed specially trained Shadow Warriors to take certain skilled mages out. I kind of felt bad for Radaal?

Land and Übel are making a comeback. I low-key ship them. Not Land saying he's not running from her, then seconds later he grabs his suitcase and launches himself out of the window to get away from her 🤣 "I want you to flirt with me more." I'm starting to like Übel.

A new arc is beginning, one where our trio plus Übel, Land, Falsch and Sense have to work together to be bodyguards to Serie as someone is trying to assassinate her. Seems like the Imperial Empire and the Continental Magic Association aren't on good terms...and the Shadow Warrior story a few chapters ago did indeed have relevance!

I'm looking foward to seeing more of this arc and what's going to happen. Everyone has their own part to play in the plan, and I just know it's all good to unravel and lead to some politicial problems.

5/5 🌟

This was the first manga I have actually read. Recommended on BookTube, I decided to try it as the BookTuber has never steered me wrong with the other books she reads.

This volume didn't disappoint. I love how slow and steady the journey is-it is exactly what Frieren is; she is slow and steady. Each arc of this journey is carefully thought out to give a little more understanding into who Frieren is and why she is taking this journey.

This continues to be one of my absolute favorites and I only wish it wasn’t going to be such a long wait for the next volume.

I love the way Frieren depicts life as a thousand year old elf.

I love the way her relationships are portrayed in light of the fact that she has lived for a thousand years and will continue living for thousands more.
It is heartbreakingly perfect.

Frieren and Flamme.
Frieren and Himmel.
Frieren and Fern.

As I read this volume I keep thinking of the song Fireflies by Owl City.
I think it is because Frieren’s long life so clearly shows the slow beauty of living.

Just because our lives end quickly does not mean we should speed up.
It is just the opposite. We need to slow down.

“I want to make myself believe that planet earth turns slowly.”

I am now caught up and reading as it is released. I am loving this arc…

Radar's story was very sweet but I think it muddles the waters to introduce shadow warriors and then introduce magic special forces so quickly on top of each other. Also why do MSF dress like kinky nazis?

The fan translation is pretty bad so I'm going to stop here and wait for v14 to come out in official english
