Oh do I LOVE a Rachel read! Her penmanship is so beguiling, I fall under HER spell each time! And this spell she cast, well shoot, it was magical in the true sense of the word!
The Rowanwoods and Brightcrests have, at best, a feud going on, at worst, a rivalry, that's why Evryn Rowanwood is engaging in a race on his Pegasus with Mariselle Brightcrest instead of engaging with young ladies at the Season's Ball. Evryn hides behind layers of nonchalance, his suave exterior in no way allows anyone to see the turmoil within. During an altercation, they stumble, yes, literally stumble through the door of a cottage no one had been able to enter for decades and suddenly find they are bound together by an ancient contract. A dream, or more correctly, a scheme shapes up in Mariselle's head, where she feels IF she can make this work, if she can turn it into a reality, her parents will value her, love her. One thing Mariselle is, is determined but she needs Evryn to complete this task. I loved how lighthearted and comical their exchange was, even though it was steeped in blackmail. Which is why I initially disliked Mariselle intensely, thinking her pompous, conniving, self righteous, self serving. But, over the next few pages, that turned into a fierce protectiveness of Mariselle, one where I wanted to scream at her family! The injustice! The uncaring manner in which they address her, patronise her, yes, I did a 360 in no time at all. I really loved how the author tugged at my heartstrings with her stirring, graphic portrayal of every word, it felt as though she'd pierced a hole in my chest and squeezed my heart physically with a vice. As cold as Mariselle's family is, Evryn's is the complete antithesis, they're warm and caring and loving and other than the stoic Jasvian, comically delightful, given Mariselle a glimpse of true family affection. By the end of Mariselle's tea at the Rowanwood house, I truthfully wanted to climb into the book and hug Mariselle, to show her people do care, siblings and family do love one another genuinely. Vividly raw emotions exposed yet concealed, a sign of exceptional penmanship.
While both Mariselle and Evryn feel insignificant to their respective families, Mariselle REALLY is! Evryn has a family who genuinely love him, his feelings of inadequacy are his own, not enforced by his family, as Mariselle's family do, verbally, unrelentingly to her. Yet, though they've entered into a.... partnership, both do want approval and recognition from their families. Both nurture a secret, besides the lie they've concocted, she, a desperation for acceptance and approval from her family, he, a journalistic endeavour he cannot allow to be made public. They both harbour massive insecurities which they suppress and when Evryn attends a celebratory dinner at the Brightcrest manor, supposedly in Mariselle's honour, he saw first hand why Mariselle was, well, as she was. Boy, I cheered so loudly at Evryn's remarks in her defense, my cat leapt off my lap!
This author has a way of making every character stand out, the supporting cast receiving just as much attention as the protagonists, they're easy to identify, and to find them exceptionally likeable. Ryden, Fin and Crispin, Evryn's friends are supportive, jovial. Their friendship is more of an institution of kinship, they all have each others back. And, even though Mariselle's family are a disaster, and disgusting, and despicable, she can count on her cousin Rowena for moral support. I'd almost forgotten how much I loved the characters from the previous book, Iris, sweet and kind; Rivenna, the matriarch, a no nonsense persona, but a kind heart, with a deep rooted hatred for the Brightcrest family. She surprised me most of all in her denial of a bond between her grandson and Mariselle, yes, ok, it WAS a falsehood but still, her reaction was unusual. The hints she dropped as to the why, well shoot, Ms Morgan had me REALLY intrigued to find out the cause! And grandma Nirella? Hells bells is SHE awesome!!!! But both Grandma's are adamant this "marriage" will never take place.... The cause for their animosity unknown until almost the very end, which was explosive!
The ... situation...between Mariselle and Evryn almost caused a riot within the families and society, completely unprecedented, completely fabricated, but oh so funny! Trying to maintain the illusion of a devoted, madly in love couple, their display of affection in public had me giggling like a two year old, those endearments Evryn addressed Mariselle with, just made my smile wider and wider, I think, this might be my favourite "my sweet venomous pixie of love" or perhaps it's "my luminous sunbeam" or could it be "my enchanted puffling".... heck, they're ALL hilarious! By the time I got to the scenes between them in the Tea House, I erupted in raucous laughter! This is fake betrothal at it's absolutely best! But flip!!!!! The author FLIPPED it good and proper! The last few chapters UNRAVELLED me! I was beyond distressed, my tummy writhing in agony! And these are precisely the twists Ms Morgan pierces me with, coming totally out of the blue! In a read with so much emotional angst, THIS knocked me right off my feet! And the next minute I was in tears from the intensity of the emotions spilling from the pages, what a rollercoaster ride! One where the smile on my face stretched from ear to eye as the ride glided to a stop, all the mysteries laid wide open, spectacularly....
A read so whimsically gorgeous, so delightfully cosy, I can't get enough of Ms Morgan's awesome imaginative excellence! The eloquence of the dialogue, the magniloquence of the banter, is a strength this very talented author possesses, I swear I draw a huge parallel between Ms Morgan and the great Shakespeare. Both authors have equal adroitness to pull it off a comic but intensely anguished tale superbly. Every word placed strategically, maximising the charm of her storytelling, heck, I could not keep the grin off my face. Although I totally concur with Rozavyn, using words like "exquisite, magnificent" lose their true meaning if used ad naseum but this read WAS exquisite, it WAS magnificent! The slow burn romance WAS exquisite, subtly built up and decidedly bewitching, so much so, I was wearing my heart on my sleeve, simply divine! These words...oh sigh..."I need you, I love you. The world would be a darker place without your bold laugh and your determined spirit" This book is divine, this series is divine, this series has a resounding message of growth, love, determination and of resilience, wrapped in the most beautiful package! You just HAVE to read this!
