Dakota Morris has decided it’s time he lost that pesky virginity.

He’s a college graduate, and he’s tired of being a virgin. So he goes out to a club his friends don’t frequent, and picks up the hottest man he’s ever seen. It’s truly a night to remember . . . until he walks into the boardroom for his new job the next morning and wishes he could forget it, because his hot pick-up is also his new boss and CEO, Ajax Fyse.

The fact that he unknowingly slept with his newest employee is the least of Jax’s problems right now. Not only is he trying to navigate a merger with a mage family who disdains werewolves as beasts, it turns out the mage he took home last night didn’t even believe magic existed till this morning.

This morning, when his magic abilities manifested.

Now, Dakota’s stapler is flying across the room, and Jax has landed himself in the position of ushering his gorgeous new hire into the realm of magic. If only sleeping with a werewolf wouldn’t ruin Dakota’s reputation among other mages . . .

I'm not so much into mages, but werewolves? Yes please.

One protective alpha wolf + one oblivious, magical virgin = a spectacular awakening, family found and family lost, lots of sushi, and a HEA (even if the ending felt rushed and abrupt).

I wish the characters had been better developed. The antagonist, in particular, was a walking caricature.

While this book is rather predictable and sadly lacking in world building, it's also fun and sexy. Sometimes, that's enough.

Witchwolf is an M/M paranormal romance between an oblivious young mage (Dakota) and a broody alpha-werewolf CEO (Jax).

Dakota is a virgin and, unbeknownst to him, he’s also a very rare kind of mage, whose powers manifest with full-force after he and Jax spend a steamy night together.

Adding to the surprises (for both men involved), is the fact that, on the morning after their spectacular hookup, Dakota begins his new job at Jax’s company.

So, we have a serious case of insta-lust, an outstanding sexual-awakening with a side of magical powers, and an absolutely present (but definitely ignored) forbidden office romance between a CEO and his new employee.

It also has growly, protective mate moments, interesting (but fairly limited) world-building, unique werewolf and magic lore, and solid found family/pack vibes that I gobbled up with glee.

Although it’s fairly short in length and fairly surface-level in terms of character and relationship depth, I enjoyed myself immensely, zipping through the pages with ease and eagerness.

I certainly wouldn’t be mad if this story expanded into a larger PNR series.

A nice story about found family. You know right from the start what you get and what you can expect story-wise and there's a nice twist about magical awakening by loosing ones virginity. Sometimes it's more than okay to read a story that is nothing more than a nice and easy pastime and also doesn't pretend to be more. It's just that the characters are lacking to really enjoy that pastime. Dakota is supposed to be a shy virgin but everything he does is anything but, Jax is obviously overloaded with his role as possessive alpha and I wouldn't even call the antagonist a character.

And as an afterthought there are also 2 random questions: can you call it a book about shifters when no one is shifting and why the heck is Dakota living anyway?

I just finished reading this book. I will give it a 5/5! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Dakota is a recent college graduate who goes out by himself one night. He goes to a werewolf club and meets Jax. They go back to Jax’s home and do what people do. The next morning, Dakota discovers that Jax is his new boss. They cannot keep away from each other. Soon after strange things start happening to Dakota. He then learns he is a mage. His power was awakened by Jax. But mages and shifters don’t get along. But these do get along quite well. Dakota had to learn to use his power to protect himself and Jax. I really enjoyed this book.

Witchwolf is the story of Dakota who thinks he's human and Ajax a werewolf. Dakota wants to loose his V card so goes to a club and picks up Ajax. The next morning he finds out he slept with his new CEO boss and magic is real. I can't say much about the story without giving spoilers but what I can say is I loved it. I loved the characters and world building, I loved the spice, and I loved the plot. I would definitely recommend this book. I can't wait to see what Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes come up with next.

So... I really liked this.

Cute story, with a pinch of magic, a hint of overly protective alpha, a smidgen of werewolves and pack dynamics, a wee bit of distrust and speciesism, a dash of found family, and a touch of yeah-I-saw-that-coming-from-a-mile-away.

Would recommend!

Kinda cheesy with a villain who was a cliche, cringey caricature, but also fun and super cute.

I feel like a bit more depth would’ve elevated this quite a bit. Also, it felt like this was a patreon book, released chapter by chapter, and I always get a weird vibe that’s hard to describe from that. Like the story isn’t as fluid or something.

I loved this original story, for its world building, the writing, and the characters. The plot was engaging, with romance, spice, action, intrigue and found family. Dakota grew up not knowing who he really was; even so, he adjusts quite quickly to the new world he finds himself in. I would have liked to have found out a little more about his adoptive parents, how he came to be with them, and whether they will figure in his new life. Jax is a kind and protective werewolf alpha who is negotiating a deal with a powerful mage family from Japan. He hires Dakota as an interpreter, completely unaware of what the effects of his decision will be. The MCs are both very likeable, as are the other members of the wolf pack and some of the mages. It's an entertaining book and worthwhile reading, but I must say that you will seldom go wrong reading a book by these authors.

Witchwolf

I love this writing duo! Everything they produce is wonderful.
Dakota is a virgin and goes out to lose that pesky virginity, meeting a handsome guy who helps with that. Jax is a werewolf who meets a beautiful Japanese man and takes him home for some fun, finding out he’s a virgin. Another win for this duo! Highly Recommended

“Witchwolf” by Sam Burns is a spicy, paranormal romance that starts with a steamy one-night stand and quickly dives into a world of magic and mayhem. Dakota Morris, a recent college graduate, decides it’s time to shed his virginity and ends up spending the night with the hottest man he’s ever seen. The next morning, he walks into his new job only to discover that his hookup is none other than his new boss, Ajax Fyse. As if that weren’t complicated enough, Dakota’s latent magical abilities begin to manifest, thrusting him into a hidden world of mages and werewolves. Ajax, a werewolf CEO navigating a tense merger with a mage family, now finds himself responsible for guiding Dakota through this newfound reality.

The premise is engaging, blending elements of office romance, supernatural discovery, and personal growth. The chemistry between Dakota and Ajax is palpable, and their interactions provide both heat and humor. Supporting characters like Prudence and Jillian add charm and levity to the narrative. However, certain aspects of the story felt a bit rushed or underdeveloped. The rapid progression of Dakota’s magical abilities and the deepening of his relationship with Ajax could have benefited from more gradual development. Additionally, some plot points stretched believability, even within the fantasy setting.

Overall, “Witchwolf” is an enjoyable read for paranormal romance fans seeking a light, entertaining story with a touch of magic and spice. While it may not delve deeply into character development or world-building, it offers a fun escape into a world where love and magic intertwine. -3 Stars!

When I read the blurb for this book I immediately wanted more, the premise just sounded really interesting to me. I mean, a mage not knowing he's a mage? Or that he exists in a world full of paranormal creatures? That's a really exciting concept! And I have to say, this dynamic duo did an excellent job with writing this story, and these characters.

From the very beginning I was pulled in to Dakota's world, and was able to learn more about him and his life. He's 22, a college graduate, about to start a high paying new job, and he's determined to lose his pesky V-Card. Little does he know that unforgettable night is going to change everything. The aspect of Dakota having no idea the paranormal world exists yet is somehow drawn to it was written in an intriguing way. It never felt fake or dubious, he genuinely had no idea what he was, or what the people around him are. Yet, somehow, he was being drawn to areas where other paranormals are, the bar and his job being main ones. I liked how that was handled.

As for Jax.. I know he's a wolf but I'm inclined to call him a teddy bear. He's the Alpha of his pack and as such he's determined to provide the best he can for his pack members. He needs to keep them safe, and if that means he can't have a mate, so be it. Until Dakota walks into a Wolf bar and sweeps him off his feet. With Dakota being in his life we get to see a different side of the gruff Wolf. He cares deeply for those around him, and even though him and Dakota just met, he tries his best to take care of the new mage as well. Which is super sweet.

Now as far as pacing goes... I loved how this story had a seamless flow to it. Even when more information kept coming to light, and when other characters interfered, the story still just flowed flawlessly! I liked how things didn't happen too fast, (yes, they slept together early on but it took them time to build it after that.) and I also appreciate how certain events weren't too drawn out either. It was just a well written story that I'm very sad is over. I want more of Jax and Dakota! I have to say, when Dakota changed and found out he was both a mage and a wolf, that moment was written in such an incredible way. There was a lightness to it while still continuing the seriousness of the moments leading up to that happening. Really well done!

I fucking loved this. Idk what else to tell you. This was adorable. Silly geese, more so Jax than Dakota, but very precious silly geese. The side characters were also phenomenal, and I wouldn’t have minded a longer book to get more of the stuff we didn’t see on page.

4.5/5. Serials are just such an excellent format. I can’t wait to read the next one when it’s finished and turned into a book.

I absolutely enjoyed this and read it in one sitting. Dakota is living with roommates and decides to go out on his own. He ends up at Howl, and knows this is a place his friends don’t visit. After meeting Jax, they end up going to Jax’s place. Jax, is an alpha wolf, and Dakota is a human, maybe? The next day when Dakota goes to his new employment, he realizes that he Jax is his boss. This started the story with how Dakota learned about the supernatural world and that he is part of it. I love how they could not stay away from each other. Great world building, heat and chemistry between them. I definitely recommend you reading this story; you will not be disappointed.

2.75(?) stars. Rounded up because I managed to finish the book didn’t I?

I seem to be in the minority here, and honestly it might be me and a matter of timing - I’m in a massive slump, which is me judging anything and everything. ANYWAY

It was…nice, I guess. I managed to finish reading it despite being in said slump, so yay? I tend to be brutal about dnfing books I don’t like. But honestly, nice is all I can say. Despite the cool premise and (somewhat) promising blurb, the plot didn’t really materialise.

Honestly, I should have known because the blurb starts with one MC wanting to lose his virginity. I don’t buy into this whole shame on either end (virgin at any adult age? No judgement. Bit of a sl*t? Again, no sl*t shaming here). The rest of it was promising though! A mage who doesn’t know it? Class differences between species? Yess! Also, this is the only kind of situation where the power differential between a boss and employee doesn’t make me cringe too much. So yeah. I went and downloaded the book.

However, despite tantalising hints at intrigue and interesting plot, the book was mostly s*x. Kid sets out to lose his virginity, boom. Club scene with smut. Day after, a handful of pages for the surprise of meeting your boss/employee (overlapping POVs) at work, then smut in the office! Why? Because they’re hot. Dakota finds out he has magic, a handful of pages (again) of Jax arranging support, and…guess what? S*x again. See the pattern? Every time there’s a glimpse or a mere mention of anything interesting, bam! There’s a smut scene. Since I skipped all of them, the book ended in less than an hour. The other thing is, thanks to all the smut, it was hard to see the emotional connection between the MCs! Like yes, Jax is kind and caring and so forth, and the attraction is partly *magic* but I would have liked to see more with them connecting about things other than their d**ks.

Also! The whole bad guy etc stuff was quite predictable too. Some of it I didn’t necessarily expect, but I did know the direction it would take. And the biggest spoiler is . It was just…predictable. But somehow still abrupt? I would have loved for the authors to spend all those pages with the unnecessary smut on worldbuilding and furthering the plot instead. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if there were fewer loose ends.

A definite winner for lovers of urban fantasy and these authors.

Rating: 4🌈

Normally I’m not one for the “virgin trope” storyline but Burns and Fawkes are two of my favorite authors and in their hands, it turns into Witchwolf, a delightful urban fantasy romance about a young man who in looking for a hot night out before a new job finds far more than he ever imagined.

Dakota Morris is the young man, recently graduated from college, and ready for his dream job and adventure. But before then? He wants that hot date and experience he’s denied himself by concentrating on his college and studies.

Burns and Fawkes have created a wonderful exuberant character in Dakota and then given him the absolutely best possible place to explore his new life and possibilities for his future.

Of course he doesn’t expect his future to come with werewolves, mages and a ton of magic.

The corporate world and culture the authors are laying down will be expanding with the next book , a chapter of which is included at the end of Witchwolf.

But we get the outline of how the company works and its origins. Pack owned and operated but not exclusively employed by just werewolves. This is a rich universe Burns and Fawkes are building and I’m hopeful that we get more than just two books here.

Dakota’s story has mysteries and some drama associated with it. I wish we could have had more details about his background but understand why that wasn’t given. There’s so much more here that cries out for greater detail and exploration, into the mage history and paranormal being rivalries.

I’m hoping that future stories dive into this element.

The romance between Dakota and Alpha Ajax is hot, fun, and the dynamic between them makes us absolutely love this couple. Want to throttle Ajax occasionally because of his lack of communication skills but still Dakota makes up for it.

Love the ending and energy going forward. But having the entire first chapter of Book 2 (great chapter too) and not the book? Argh.

I will be watching out for that book next.

A definite winner for lovers of urban fantasy and these authors.

Witchwolf series:
- [x] Witchwolf #1
- [ ] Word, Nerds, & Werecats #2 - coming early 2026 - chapter 1 included in the first book. ❤️

2.5 stars that I'm rounding up.

They story felt a bit too under developed. From his quickly Dakota and Jax got into a relationship to Dakota's super obvious origin to the underwhelming climax and abrupt end. Everything felt a bit too YA in how shallow things went and how easily the conflicts were solved.

If Jiro had been keeping track of Dakota, why but just off him before he awakened? Dakota was the clear heir and he clearly had no plans to manupulate Dakota to his side so I don't understand why he didn't just get rid of him like he did with his dad and uncle.

Dakota taking so easily to magic was boring. Jax immediately wanting to be with Dakota was borderline instalove but I will say that Jax justifying wanting Dakota's attention because he was a mage and Jax loved that was cool. But it did mean that one he found out that Dakota didn't know he was a mage that his concern and affection became instalove considering they'd only spent two days knowing each other at that point.

At the climax, Dakota calmly talking to Jiro as Jax was on the ground, taking for air was dumb. Idk how he could stand there and listen to Jiro's cliché villain monologue as his supposed beloved was dying on the floor, grasping at his leg beside him.

Outside of those, Ihonestly don't even remember much of the middle outside of that weird karaoke scene (which only seemed to exist to show that Donnie was likely not who he seemed).

TL;DR: Nothing super memorable but nothing super bad either. Instalove and sort of a shallow story that felt more in line with a YA novel.

A surprising let down. I can see how others could like this, but it was an unexpected miss for me.

Sam Burns is usually a reliable 4 or 5 star read for me. There was just so much about this book that didn’t work for me.

Some of the stuff I didn’t like was completely specific to my taste. I couldn’t stand how Jax acted like a total disrespectful frat bro who just got laid when he got into the office the day after his first encounter with Dakota. It was just obnoxious and out of place for this style of book. I also hate the “special all along” trope that was used in this book. Additionally, I disliked the world building and the way that powers were “awakened” for individuals. Jax “awakening” Dakota without his consent felt weirdly wrong (even though their first hookup was clearly consensual, it didn’t feel that way reading it).

Ignoring my noted bias above, I felt like the plot was predictable, many actions didn’t make sense (there is no way the villain would just leave the way they did after the main confrontation), and the book somehow managed to feel both rushed and too long at the same time.

While I will definitely continue to give books by Sam Burns a chance in the future, this is one I would recommend skipping.

I feel conflicted about this book. I thought the concept sounded interesting, and the writing was pretty good. However, to me it felt like the plot only emerged at the 75% mark. Honestly I didn’t even realize I’d gotten that far into the book until I checked the page number because it felt like so little had actually happened to build tension up to that point.

I adored this story of Dakota and Jax and hope we get to see more of the pack! Dakota is all set for his new job on Monday and wants to celebrate by finding someone to rock his world. Jax is surprised when a mage walks into Howl looking for a good time and takes him home for some fun. Turns out that mage is Dakota and he doesn't really know anything about being a mage or the supernatural world. I loved how Jax showed his alpha nature by taking care of the pack and trying to put them first. He's super sweet with Dakota and has some difficult discussions even when he doesn't want to. The communication is on point and the chemistry is there between these two. Dakota not only has to navigate a new job but also learning about magic and the supernatural world. It was nice to see him gain confidence to stand up for what he wants and fight for himself. This story hooked me from the beginning and kept me entertained until the last word. The secondary characters are very well done and I hope that we get to see some more familiar faces in the future!

Thank you so much to Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes for an ARC of this book, I had so much fun reading it -`♡´-

I worry I won't have too much to say because I don't want to spoil anything, but what's important is that I loved the main characters and their friends, and I loved the relationship between all of them. This is supposed to be a story about a werewolf pack, and I really felt the love these characters had for each other. I also LOVED how much Jax loved Dakota, I loved how much Dakota loved Jax, I loved the stuff about Kosuke (˙ᵕ˙), and gods, I just really miss this feeling I get whenever I read a good romantasy ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝)

I'm just giddy right now, to be honest, I want everyone to read this book because I want more fun, urban romantasies like this. It was such a blast, and I will forever be grateful to it for just helping me kick the last of this annoying reading slump (ㅅ´ ˘ `)

Dakota goes to a club hoping to lose his virginity when he meets Jax. Their night together is explosive and when Dakota leaves in the morning to get to work, he doesn't realize the events that have been set in motion. When he shows up to his new corporate job, he discovers that his one night stand is the CEO. Despite knowing better they keep being pulled towards each other. There was a lot of miscommunication at the beginning and it was starting to get annoying (miscommunication is my least favorite trope), but it sorted itself out before I lost patience completely. The story was good but the climax seemed to lack something. There was no sense that that part of the story was the climax, given the same amount of time as the rest of the story. Despite that the story was very entertaining with possessive male leads (although a lot of his chapters were dedicated to him feeling sorry for himself because he was trying to resist Dakota). Spice level: 3

This was a fun read with quite a lot of elements that made me happy:

.) Mage who has no idea he has magic until it is ‘awakened’ (in a rather ‘interesting’ way!) - Dakota
.) Werewolf who is wonderfully protective, caring and kind – Jax
.) Nice character development, for both men
.) Captivating plot with a couple of twists (although some are easy to guess)
.) Heat and sizzle, tenderness and repressed feelings

The whole concept of the book is really great, but the world building is underdeveloped which left me with lots of questions about this universe and how some things work.
Some events needed way more exploring, for ex. Dakota accepting his magic and the existence of magical beings (he barely blinked!), or him settling into his magic under the guidance of Prudence, something we see very little of.

Despite my niggles, the entertainment factor is definitely there!

"Witchwolf" received FOUR stars.

I enjoyed the characters immensely and the Dakota/Jax romance was very swoon-worthy and satisfying. The witchwolf part of the story was lacking, though. I would’ve liked to have seen the Jiro conflict dragged out into a sequel, so I could watch Dakota learn how to use his new powers, which he would then use to defeat his biological family.

The novel gained *stars* for these items:

* gained for: "The book caught my interest in the first five pages."

* gained for: "I thought about the book when I was forced to set it down and re-enter society."

* gained for: "There were no info dumps, poor writing, or copy edit mistakes that jerked me out of the story."

* gained for: "I was sad when the book ended. I wanted more!"

The novel failed to gain stars for this item:

NO STAR gained for: "That's it. I'm hooked on this author. I will automatically try anything she/he/they writes."

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

After five months away from a Greg Boudreaux narration, pressing play on Witchwolf felt like coming home. His voice carries a warmth and precision that immediately grounds the story, reminding me why I’ve missed his performances so much. Mark Montgomery, on the other hand, was a delightful discovery — familiar, engaging, and perfectly suited to this world. I’ll definitely be keeping an ear out for more of his work.

As for the writing duo, Burns & Fawkes have truly surprised me with this one. Witchwolf is unapologetically steamy — far spicier than their usual tone — and I mean that as high praise. The chemistry between the leads sizzles, but what impressed me most was that it never overshadowed the emotional depth or the intrigue of the plot.

It’s also a quick and easy listen, the kind of story you can breeze through in one sitting without ever losing engagement. The pacing is tight, the romance well-balanced, and the worldbuilding just rich enough to leave you wanting more.

In short, Witchwolf is a perfect balance of passion and charm, brought to life through two truly engaging performances. Burns & Fawkes turn up the heat far beyond their usual level, and the result feels fresh, daring, and irresistibly engaging. Every minute of this story is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

I really wanted to love this book going in, but it was a bit of a bumpy ride for me. I kept starting and stopping before it finally grabbed me. The plot had some interesting stuff happening, but the pacing just felt a little off, which made it hard to really get lost in the story.

I did like the characters, even though I didn't totally connect with them. Dakota was sweet, and Jax being all protective was a nice touch. I kind of wished we'd seen more of their relationship develop, you know? Like, more moments of them getting closer.

The main conflict felt like it could have used a bit more oomph, and I was also hoping for a more fleshed-out world. It felt like there was potential for more detail there.

So, yeah, it wasn't exactly my favorite, but it's still a decent enough book if you're looking for something to pass the time with.

Was this the best thing ever written? Probably not. But did I have a good time while reading it? Hell yeah I did.
Jax and Dakota had such great chemistry and were fun and sweet characters both together and apart.
Since Jax was both older, richer and Dakota’s boss, there was obviously a power imbalance, but Jax was also the biggest simping sweetheart with some serious self doubt and self loathing issues who put Dakota on a pedestal and would’ve done anything for him, so it just didn’t feel like it.
And honestly, Dakota was awesome so it didn’t seem unjustified that Jax held him in such high regard and fell for him fast.

All the side characters were lovely too.

The villain may have been a little cliche and the ending a tiny bit rushed, but overall this book had me hooked and highly entertained.
