In Close Her Eyes (Detective Josie Quinn Book 17) by Lisa Regan, Josie and the team land a case where a young woman's body is found with a cattle brand that matches the one Medical Examiner Anya Feist received from her ex-husband ten years ago. When a second body is found with the same mark, the team races against the clock to piece together this terrifying puzzle before it’s too late.
I revisited this one for a March group read on Goodreads.
This is one of my favourite books in the series. The cases were intriguing and definitely not linear. The story held my interest, and I enjoyed the journey, particularly the unravelling of the clues to uncover the truth. The twists were unexpected and felt earned, not just there for shock value. Most importantly, I connected with the characters; they all felt so real.
Rereading this feels like a form of literary masochism because I knew exactly where this story was headed, and yet, here I am. Knowing the 'how' and 'when' didn't make the impact any softer; if anything, the anticipation made this reread even more intense.
So now, I write this with tears in my eyes, gutted by the end of chapter 48. I’m wondering how I'll feel when I resume my actual place in this series: book 22, Husband Missing. I have a renewed ache that you'd have to be a follower of the series from book one to truly understand.
I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to fans of police procedurals and crime fiction who seek in-depth character development and a 'found family' dynamic that will stay with you long after the final page.
