Wrong about Sodom: 2nd edition

Rate this book
The story of Sodom is smack dab in the middle of two huge controversies. Is it about sex, or immigration?

Many people are convinced that "the sin of Sodom" was "sodomy." This is not supported by the text. The story is in fact about welcoming strangers.

To understand the story correctly, you really should look carefully

1. Genesis 18 about Mamre TOGETHER with Genesis 19 about Sodom
2. Judges 19-20, a storyvery similar to Sodom that sets aside any hint that it might be about homosexuality
3. three prophets who wrote about the evil in Sodom -- Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel
4. In Ezekiel, look at the definition of "abomination"
5. Two Gospels, Matthew and Luke, link Sodom and hospitality
6. Two Epistles, Jude and 2 Peter, often seen as the basis for linking Sodom and "sodomy" but in fact they are not a solid base for such a link
7. The writing of Josephus, a good historian but not a theologian, is the origin of the word "sodomy," and the origin of immense confusion.
8. The Fathers of the early Church refer to the sin of Sodom, offfering a list of ideas other than "sodomy."
9. Thomas Aquinas links Sodom and "sodomy," but there are several serious problems in his argument -- gebinning with a simple error in translation
10. The Catechism of the Catholic Church refer to the "sin on Sodom," but does NOT descrine what it is.
