When Zayn, your smoking hot boss, tells you never to touch the cache of deluxe tattoo ink locked away in his office, you listen to him… until the day you run out of your own ink, your squirming client is on the verge of peeing his pants, and your boss is nowhere to be found. Desperate times call for desperate measures, right?

I fully expected Zayn to yell at me when he returned to the shop. What I didn't expect was the fresh cobra tattoo on my client’s butt magically springing to life. Or the interdimensional filing cabinet hiding in the back of Zayn's office. And, oh, did I mention that my gorgeous, magic-ink-hoarding boss is actually an incubus?

Now – through (mostly) no fault of my own – we have to venture into a strange and distant land where a never-ending list of lethal flora, fauna, and fae await us. When you add in my Jewish mother’s string of poorly-timed, hysterical phone calls, there is one thing I’m grateful there’s no cell service in the fae realm.

This series is a work of art. If you haven't read it yet, just do yourself a favor and grab it now. You can thank me later.

I laughed, I cried, I screeched at the end of each book because how dare it be over already, and I screamed in triumph when I predicted an important plot point. I'm so glad these are all together now to easily start the next book immediately after finishing the first. If anything else ever gets added to this series I'll be dropping everything to read it immediately.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

4.5*

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Listened to this on audio, took me a little while to get used to the voices, definitely wish this had been a duo or graphic audio type. Storyline was amazing and loved all of the elements that were brought into it.

The Gilded Blood Series by Rachel Rener
Gilded Blood Series by Rachel Rener
Narrated by Tara Novie, with a small part by Logan McAllister and the author
Full Series (4 books) Urban Fantasy RomCom

I don’t read a lot of fantasy. Maybe two series a year, plus a few scattered paranormal books. But when I saw a table of gorgeous pink leather-bound books with silver edges at the Wild & Windy West book signing, I had to stop and see what it was. The Gilded Blood Series by Rachel Rener caught my eye immediately. Then I read the blurb and saw the FMC had a typical Jewish mom, and I was sold.

You can grab the full series as a special edition hardcover, ebook (currently in KU), or a single audiobook credit, or listen to or read the books separately—Inked, Jinxed, Linked, and Synced—on Amazon or Hoopla. I started with Inked on Hoopla just to try it out, and I was instantly hooked. I didn’t stop until I finished the whole series. The Gilded Blood Series is now one of my favorite fantasy series ever.

Talia is a needle-phobic tattoo artist in Miami Beach. One day, while working alone because her gorgeous boss Zayn was MIA, she ran into a problem. The cobra-with-a-rattle she had been tattooing on a guy’s ass for hours needed just a few more lines, but she completely ran out of ink. Thinking Zayn wouldn’t notice a few drops, she used a bit of his super-expensive ‘special’ ink. When she finished the tattoo, the cobra came to life, leaping off the guy’s butt.

Talia goes looking for answers, but instead of Zayn, she finds his “pet” parrot, Biscuit, who leads her to a Zayn's filing cabinet—the entrance to the fae realm. Zayn is actually an Incubus (but a good one), and he’s known all along that Talia’s golden blood is rare and powerful. He’s been protecting her from a dangerous world where her blood would make her a target. But now that she’s entered the fae world, her blood is activated. She glows. And that glow is basically a beacon for magical creatures.

It turned out that Zayn is an expert runemaster, tattooing magical runes or symbols on other fae. I loved this magical system. It was so unique and easy to follow, even for someone who doesn’t read much fantasy. The worldbuilding was fantastic. While the names of the creatures—Incubus, Banshee, Siren, Succubus, Mermaid, and more—might be familiar, the author’s take on them was fresh and original.
“For someone like you – someone with golden blood – you don’t need magic ink to summon the spells from runes. You only need to replicate them with decent precision and they’ll come alive with a single drop of blood.”

That quote perfectly sums up the heart of the story and the dangerous quest that follows.

There’s also a lot of humor. Talia’s overbearing Jewish mother cracked me up, and her role grows bigger as the series progresses. Biscuit the parrot is hilarious and totally adorable. I want a Biscuit of my own. There’s a large supporting cast of fae characters, but I never felt lost or overwhelmed. Everything just clicks.

The romance is a slow burn, but totally worth it. For most of the series, Zayn and Talia can’t even touch, which keeps the heat fairly low. But when it comes? It delivers. That said, I was so invested in the characters and the plot, I didn’t miss the earlier spice.

Another thing I loved? The deeper message behind the story. This series shows how intolerance and fear can snowball into violence and division. But when people (or fae) start to listen, understand, and embrace differences, that’s when real change begins.

I mentioned earlier that I bought the special edition hardcover, and let me tell you—it’s stunning. Full-color illustrations, maps of the fae realm, and decorative chapter headings made it a piece of art. I didn’t read along with the audio, but I flipped through after every few chapters to see the artwork. I’ve never spent that much on a book I’d never heard of before, but I have zero regrets. Totally worth it.
Likes:

•Completely sucked me in from the start.
•The humor woven throughout the story.
•Talia’s mom was so funny, and I loved her secret.
•Biscuit. I am in love with the bird, and the narrator made me fall harder.
•Zayn… sigh.
•So much character growth through the book.
•How everyone fell for Talia, not because of her magic, but because of her kindness to all creatures.
•How tattoos are so significant to the story. The magic was so unique.
•Jewish representation.
•Amazing, easy world-building and magic system.
•You can just tell the author is intelligent.
•Extremely well-written.
•The Yiddish/English glossary.
•The special edition book is the prettiest book ever, with beautiful full-color illustrations throughout.
•I loved the recaps even though I listened straight through. I wish all authors did that.

Dislikes (but not really):

•Talia had a few TSTL moments in the first book that might make some people give up too soon. She gets much smarter as the series goes on.
•If the author wasn’t Jewish herself, I may have found the stereotype of Talia’s mother to be a little insulting, but coming from a Jewish person, it’s fine. We are allowed to make fun of ourselves.

The Narration:
Tara Novie was phenomenal. She brought so many characters to life with distinct voices and nailed the humor, especially Talia’s loud, lovable mom and Biscuit. Her pronunciation of the Yiddish was spot-on too. Author Rachel Rener narrates the glossary segments, and I was pleasantly surprised at how great her audio voice is. Logan McAllister joins briefly in the last book, and while it threw me for a second, it made sense and he did a solid job. I highly recommend the audio, especially if you’re reading along in the illustrated edition.

The Down & Dirty:
The Gilded Blood Series by Rachel Rener completely captivated me. If I didn’t have a dozen publisher audiobooks waiting, I’d already be re-listening. I haven’t had the urge to binge a series again so soon in years. And lucky me, there’s now a prequel called Silver Blood , and I’m jumping on it next. You absolutely don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy the Gilded Blood series, but if you are, bump it to the top of your list. It’s one of the most unique urban fantasy series I’ve read, with fantastic world-building, Jewish representation, smart writing, and just the right amount of steam and romance. Don’t miss it.

Rating: 5 Stars. 3 Heat. 4.5 Narration.

Physical/audiobook (audible) -

Inked 5⭐️ - what a magnificent world and story. The blending of real and far realms is fantastic. Talia and Zayn are the perfect forbidden romance couple. With him being an incubus and her having the most delicious and most powerful blood magic in both realms, he’s more likely to kill her with each romantic sharing.

Jinxed 4.75⭐️ - not a big fan of those using sex to enslave another to oneself, and Sol constantly forcing himself upon Talia. Love how much stronger and confident Talia grows in this book of the series. The fact that she spreads her kindness to those that she meets which makes them fall in love with her back is beautiful.

Favorite quotes: “‘What a lovely thought - a siren in a karaoke bar.’” - Zayn

Linked 4⭐️ - Talia escapes from Sol but finds that the ruin his ruin master didn’t finish works enough to cause her pain whenever anyone but Sol touches her, including her mother. Doesn’t seem to be impacted by her shared familiar Hibiscus. Momma Dee Dee comes to the rescue and they make it to the Summer castle. Mavros warns of Sols upcoming attack on the Elven community and Zayn and Talia head there to help protect. Claus is taken out by Sol for touching and attempting to kill Talia and Zayn knocks Sol put to grab Talia and Korrine to escape. Book ends on a cliff hanger with Zayn and Marvos splitting to the castle to warn them of Sols impending attack and Talia takes the Elves under the mountain.

Favorite quotes:
“‘That is a banshee to make all other banshees weep.’” - Saoirse

Synched 4.5⭐️ - interesting wrap-up of the series. SOL is defeated and Zayn and Talia are engaged sharing matching ruin tattoos with each other’s heartbeat.

I LOVED this book. LOVED IT. I can now say that it is my favourite possession, because not only is the story inside it beautifully, vibrantly written, but the book itself is downright stunning. The cover is gorgeous and the artwork throughout took my breath away (excuse me, Jinxed chapter 3? I SOBBED when I saw that 😭). The characters are so human in the best way, I'm pretty sure Talia is the most relatable character I've ever come across. She's clumsy and flawed, but she's got a heart of gold (ha) and only wants the best for everyone she meets. Plus this is the first time I'm reading about a character who dyes her hair bright colours, so I automatically want to be her best friend. Don't even get me started on Biscuit - as a budgie mama I was cackling and sobbing my way through this book like a moron and I loved every minute of it.

In all seriousness though, this book is truly a work of art. The only word I can think of to describe it is vibrant - it's colourful, like Rachel is painting the world in your mind. For someone who craves escape into a fantasy realm, the escape Gilded Blood provided me was the nost immersive I've experienced. I don't know if people will think I'm overhyping at this point but it's how I feel off the back of finishing it 5 minutes ago 😂 860 pages and I still want more

In terms of spice (if people reading this want to know), there is spice but it is only used to amplify the story. It's a slow burn, but it's there and it's 🔥

Thank you Rachel, for giving me my new favourite book 🩷

This is a phenomenally well-written series featuring fully-developed, engaging characters; rich, beautifully-described settings; and a storyline that will grab you hook, line, and sinker.

The story follows Talia, an art school dropout-turned-tattoo artist who's terrified of needles, about as magical as a box of rocks, and about as knowledgeable about the magical world that sits just on the other side of the dimensional border of our own.

But when a tattoo touch-up results in a living tattoo, her boss, Zayn, has got some 'splainin' to do Lucy! After a quick trip through the interdimensional filing cabinet (eat yer heart out, Lewis!), Talia embarks on the journey of a lifetime, learning that there's so much more to the world that she ever could've possibly thought.

With her flamboyantly colored bird buddy Biscuit (Bisskiss!), Talia's got some Zayn saving to do and a lot of new things to learn. Who knew being a runemaster-in-training was such a tough gig?

For those folks already deeply invested in the Renerverse or just the Romantasy genre as a whole, this series is a treat that must be experienced! If you've never read one of her books, or never checked out a Romantasy novel, prepare to join the collective (one of us! one of us!)! I cannot possibly recommend this series enough, and having all the books in one full eye-searingly beautiful omnibus edition is the absolute best. Everyone should get stuck-in to this original, brilliant, and thrilling series!

woah! what a ride this series is! highly recommend for every UF reader out there! we have a major a-hole for a bad guy, and his henchmen that aren't that much better. then we have the clueless and sometimes infuriating human woman and the succubus in disguise boss who is such a softie for the human he know.
Talia, the human woman was not my favorite FMC in the first two books, I found her reasoning kind of annoying and infuriating. her mother on the other hand - I loooved her mother throughout the series, such a breath of fresh air.
we have a new world, parallell to our own, we have bad guys, good guys and a whole lot of intrigue, a race to the 'finish line' and then some major cliff hangers and twist and turns that made me wanna throw my Kindle/headphones into the wall a few times. but this series grips you and don't let go! it's faced paced and action filled with amazing side characters and the world building is awesome! cannot recommend it enough!

This series has it all: brilliant and simple magic system, fab world building, wonderful romance, and side characters to steal the show. On top of all this brilliance, the Jewish representation is memorable. It is still the only fantasy series I've ever read that has Jewish characters and I absolutely LOVE how it all comes together.

The fast-paced, high-stakes, intense-action plot makes for an epic page turner and I adore Talia's character arc, which is not only believable, but also very relatable. She goes from complete newbie klutz who stumbles from one mess into another in "Inked" to a powerful and empowering character by the time "Synced" ended. I also really appreciate the very deep exploration of how intolerance breeds violence and spirals out of control, leading to one atrocity after another, while true tolerance of difference and openness to the differences around us is the only way to coexist harmoniously.

It's a fabulous series and I will be reading it again. No doubt about it.

I love this.

Love, love, love.

The book series is beyond amazing and I was laughing in multiple places (Diedre is just a fantastic character and her moments were top-notch!), I was rooting for Talia and Zayn and their romance and feeling their pain when they fell, I adored all the familiars and Biscuit stole my heart completely, I felt the plot was on point and fast and perfect. I am completely in love with this series and the characters and ugh, I just want to hug Talia and tell her everything will be okay and I want to find a Zayn of my own.

I really don't have the words to describe the love and happiness this book series brought me but it brought be everything I wanted and I am so happy I've now read it. I just need to read it over and over again, whenever I want to return to our beloved two tattoo artist Runemakers with BAMF found family and even greater love.

This author thought of damn near everything with this gorgeous, one of a kind edition. She made sure we thoroughly visualized every single scrap of detail. The rune glossary, elvish dictionary, even the Yiddish translations….SENSATIONAL. The illustrations were so vivid and mesmerizing. The recap before the last book was incredibly refreshing with detailed updates (and illustrations) of all the main characters 🤌🏼💋 That should be a requirement for every series! I laughed and cried my way through the entire book. The overbearing Jewish mother is hysterical and by far my favorite character. I love that practically nothing was left unanswered or explained. The assortment of fantasy creatures in this series was almost overwhelming, in the best way. I didn’t want the series to end. Fantastic read!

This omnibus was an amazing read! I honestly read silver blood first so I did have more of the relationship story between Talia and Zayn which I felt helped make sense of their budding love. This story takes you through so many adventures and introduces us to so many different kinds of colorful creatures. There’s world building is amazing and you can easily picture it in your mind as you read. We see Talia and Zayn travel to many places and try to build a group of many beings to stand up and fight to take back their realm and it is engulfing for a reader. We get so much more biscuit and he may even have a love interest by the end but you’ll have to read it to get more insight on our beloved familiar.

I am absolutely obsessed with this book! Rachel is by far my favorite indie author! I genuinely feel like this book is as good as any majorly popular trad published fantasy books! Her writing is amazing, engaging and the story line is cohesive and satisfying! I absolutely love the way she incorporated tattoos into her storyline and of course I am a huge Biscuit fan! 🥹 The audio was also done really well! I loved this book so much I had it on my kindle, audible and I got the limited edition book (which looks GORGEOUS on my shelf!!)

Can I just say. The gilded blood series is by far the best series I've ever read. This series kept me yearning for more. I bought the pink limited edition because I saw it in one of the book lovers' pages and thought it was gorgeous. Breezed through 800+ pages in 2 weeks (work/sleep). I laughed, cried and everything in-between. I plan on getting a biss-kiss feather tattooed in the near future. (Thanks to one of the renergades for the inspiration). All that to simply say thank you, Rachel, for bringing this amazing story to life. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

This was such a cute book!! I only ended up reading the first two, but I really enjoyed them. I just felt satisfied with the conclusion of book 2 and am itching to read a different genre so I decided not to continue but I would still recommend this series and this author to my romantasy reading friends! I still might come back and finish it later if I feel so inclined.
This had great banter, the FMC was hilariously irreverent and I loved her honest reactions to magic and a whole new world, it was hilarious.

An absolute perfect mostly cozy romantasy with solid world building and decent character development. This is a great palate cleaner kind of series before getting into a more serious or in depth story. Overall this is a straightforward story and loose ends are all tied up nicely by the end. The love between the main characters, the FMC finding her own path, and figuring out the truth of her past and her parents. It’s overall a good story, nicely done, no noticeable grammar issues, solid editing. Highly recommend

First of all the Gilded Blood Omnibus is epically beautiful. I loved all of the bits of art sprinkled throughout and it is honestly the prettiest book I own.
The story is amazing - I laughed from the beginning and experienced a roller coaster of emotions while not being able to put the book down. Literally, I unboxed it then started reading and practically couldn’t stop until I finished it.
An amazing story with awesome characters!

This was absolutely beautiful. I can’t tell you what I loved more because the entire series is perfect. The world building is top tier, the characters are amusing and relatable, the villains are equally annoying, the thought and care that went into this series alone is amazing but the omnibus art and extra features is otherworldly! I may have a new favorite series, and author!

4.5 Stars. I will fill out a better review in the morning, but overall it was a fun series to read! Definitely has spicy stuff in it, so if you don't do spice, might not be for you...or just get the printed book (I had audio) and sort of gloss over things. I didn't do 5 stars purely for some of the slight cliche factor but it didn't take away enough from the book to care much about.

This was a really fun weekend read. It was pretty much non-stop shenanigans and whimsical fun. A few sad parts, but nothing that will wreck someone that survived TOG 😂
Took off one star because some characters can get insanely overbearing and annoying. I also listened to the audible and the FMC tends to get overly dramatic and screechy, but since I'm a big anime fan, it wasn't that big of a deal.

So I bought the limited edition of this book not really knowing what I was getting. So happy I did it! This group of books was so good, I was experiencing so many deep emotions, anxiety, lots of laughter, some crying, and pretty much all other human emotions. It’s a different take on the supernatural world and well worth the read!

I discovered Rachel Renner via a local author who featured her as a support author for a new book release. Of all the new authors I have discovered over the years, Rachel has easily hit the top 5 authors for me. I expected a shallow, 'high school' type vibe (as seen in a lot of romantasy series) but I was pleasantly surprised.
The magic system was superb, the crossover between the fae realm and modern world was brilliant, and the characters were exceptional. I fell in love with Zade and 'biss-kiss' from the moment they entered the scene.
Loved this, and looking forward to reading the prequel (Silver Blood) and Zade's perspective of the gilded blood series as Rachel releases chapters.

One of the best series I have read in years. Talia is so funny and snarky but what an emotional ride the story is. Excellent!

Also, this is such a beautiful special edition omnibus. If you're tempted, treat yourself. You won't regret this series.
