Shadow Dancing

Rate this book
In small-town Tennessee, healing comes when you least expect it.

Bekah Casey is soul-weary, and clinging to anger like it’s the only thing keeping her upright. It’s been nearly a year since her world shattered, and she still can’t breathe right. Her marriage is broken, her faith is cracked, and the only thing she knows how to do is run—from her pain, from Mitch, and from the God who seems to have gone silent.
Now back under her parents’ roof in small-town Tennessee, Bekah’s juggling two jobs and a heart full of questions. Her mama swears the Lord’s still working, even in the dark—but Bekah’s not so sure. Especially when things go from bad to worse, and the shadows she’s been dancing with start to close in.
Mitch Casey never figured himself a praying man, but he’d try anything to fix what he broke. Bekah’s pain is a mirror of his own, and he’s willing to carry the blame if it means she might finally find peace. But after one reckless night and a stint in jail, Mitch is handed a second chance in the most unexpected of places—a church basement, under the guidance of a no-nonsense pastor with a past of his own.
Shadow Dancing is a raw, redemptive Southern tale about the messy, beautiful work of forgiveness. With grit, grace, and a rhythm all its own, this is a story of two broken souls learning to trust again—in each other, in themselves, and maybe even in something greater.

Beautiful story, dancing with the struggles of disappointing aspects of life and death. The moves and steps we take after a heartbreaking experience can take us closer to God and our loved ones or into a dark, lonely cave of doubt and misgivings. What would you choose? Sometimes, the darkness swallows the path, then the journey bypasses God’s will.

I’m thankful for the author’s genuine excavation of emotions and reactions to life’s pain and problems. And the solution…

Bravo, Jennifer, keep dancing in the light.

First of all, I love Jennifer Siene's writing and anxiously await each book. She develops characters that are so real that I not only feel I know them, but I expect them to come knocking at my door! And her story is every bit as commendable. Although this one deals with complex topics, including death, terminal illness, and a broken marriage, to name a few, that's what makes it authentic. I was so invested in the characters I wanted to see how they would handle the tension and troubles. My heart ached as I rooted for each one. In all their flaws, Mitch and Rebekah handle life, struggling to succeed, sometimes without, but ultimately with God. Very nicely written.
I look forward to the next installment in the series, eager to continue the journey in Bedford County.

I am actually at a loss as to where to start or even what to write on this review. My emotions are in a turmoil after reading this book. The tears I have shed while reading this book are blurring my vision, but they are tears of sadness, as well as joy. This book was heart breaking, but so thought provoking. Jennifer Sienes is an ultra talented writer who quite obviously writes directly from her heart. She holds nothing back.

Bekah Casey is a grief-stricken, broken woman. Instead of working through her grief, she decides to blame the love of her life, Mitch. She moved out of her marital home and moved into the house with her parents. It just seems easier to blame Mitch for everything wrong in her life. Bekah was raised in a loving, faith-filled home, but she has cast her faith aside and decided to hold tight to her grief and anger. Mitch, on the other hand, was not raised in a loving, faith-filled home, and quite frankly has never fully understood Bekah's faith. He is heartbroken and needs and wants his wife to come back home. One night he makes a horrible mistake and ends up the spending the night in jail. That night in jail will forever change his life in ways he never dreamt possible.

I loved both Bekah and Mitch. I had to give Mitch full credit for allowing Bekah to blame him and punish him, all while still loving her. However, it is quite obvious that Bekah loved Mitch as well, she just did not know how to work through her bitterness and get past it for a time.

This was a wonderful book of redemption and learning how to grieve and grow. You will need a box of tissue while reading this book, but when you close the final pages, you will feel complete and have a smile on your face. This quote directly from the book left an impression on me, "Wading through grief was like dancing with shadows".

If you need a blessing and do not mind reading an incredible story about real people with real problems (and you do not mind a good cry), you will enjoy this story. Although the grief was sad, the story will touch your heart in places you never dreamed imaginable.

Thank you to Jennifer Sienes for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

If you’re searching for a book that grips your heart and refuses to let go, look no further than Jennifer Sienes’ latest masterpiece, “Shadow Dancing.” Having read several of Sienes’ books, I can confidently say that she continues to amaze me with her exceptional storytelling skills.

“Shadow Dancing” centers on Bekah Casey, a grieving woman. With her marriage in ruins, she seeks refuge at her parents’ home. Struggling to find peace, she seeks wisdom from her mother, a pillar of unwavering faith. Her mother reminds her to trust the Lord; however, for Bekah, trusting is easier said than done.

The story takes an unexpected turn when Bekah’s estranged husband, Mitch Casey, begins an unforeseen journey of his own. With each page, you’ll find yourself reflecting on the meaning of trust and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit.

What I love about this author is her ability to create characters that breathe with life and complexity. From Bekah and Mitch to the supporting cast, each individual is so unique yet familiar, making it easy to form genuine connections. I found myself cheering for their triumphs, shedding tears for their sorrows, and rejoicing in their growth. The author is a masterful writer whose words so amazingly reveal vivid scenes, transporting you into the characters’ lives and ensuring you’re fully immersed in their journey.

If you are seeking a story that tugs at your heartstrings, filled with hope, redemption, and the power of love, then “Shadow Dancing” is the book for you. This book earns a solid five stars from me.

If you have not read a book by this author yet, please do so. Her style of writing is like a fresh summer rain where everything is peaceful and you can feel God’s presence. The story in this book is tragic and uplifting at the same time . I just saw a post on Facebook where my friend was remembering her little two year old who passed away twenty- four years ago. The pain is still there for her just like it was yesterday.

That leads me to Bekah and Mitch who lost their sweet little boy at the tender age of five. The emotions run from anger to bitterness as they face the days without their son. Bekah is angry at God but seems to blame Mitch for their sons death. Running away from her problems she decides to move in with her parents. I have to say God had ordained everything that was taking place as Bekah faced another tragedy that took everyone by surprise.

Mitch is simply lost not knowing how to fix his marriage or even try to come to terms with the death of his son. I liked how he never gave up on his marriage and decided that he needed someone to help him. He does go through a bit of making wrong choices but it leads him to a pastor. The moment he spends with the pastor are nothing short of redemption for him. He has kept a secret from his wife about the death of their son which he knows he can’t hide any longer.

With a journey through grief, finding God and an unexpected blessing that changes several lives, we experience the depth of forgiveness and a new beginning. We never know what God’s plan is for our lives but this story encourages us to never give up. Don’t miss the great message of healing a broken heart and trusting God .

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Jennifer Sienes is a favorite author of mine, I have read many of her books. I am always excited when she releases a new book. I recently read Shadow Dancing by Jennifer Sienes. It is Book 2 of The Bedford County Series.

Bekah Casey has had quite a year and has been grieving for things to go right in her life. She believes that her husband Mitch is to blame for everything wrong in her life and has moved back home with her parents. Her Mom is a strong woman of Faith and has encouraged Bekah to lean her trust in the Lord and he will help her. Bekah has swayed from her faith and has hardened her heart with anger. Her husband Mitch did not grow up in a Christian home and he struggles to understand the Christian Faith through Bekah. His life is changed drastically after he spends a night in jail due to a mistake he made. Mitch is connected with a local Pastor after his night in jail and he now has a newfound faith. Will Mitch and Bekah be able to reconcile and live in the same household again? Will Bekah gain her faith back and will things change for her?

WOW, the storyline captured my attention in the first few paragraphs of the book. Bekah has been discouraged by life happenings for awhile and thus her faith was set aside. I LOVE how her mom encourages her to Trust in the Lord. Mitch was not a Christian, but through some life-altering events, he finds faith. The characters are very believable and encouraging. The story is one of being able to Trust God and lean not onto your understanding, even through the trials of life. Forgiveness is also a theme in this book. I HIGHLY recommend this Clean, Sweet Christian Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!

Mitch takes everything that Bekah throws his way. He hopes that it will help her work through her issues - since he was not raised in a faith based home he does not understand how it works. Then one poor decision, a night in jail, and a divine assignment with a local pastor puts Mitch on an unexpected path.

This was such a beautifully written story of forgiveness and redemption. The author does such a great way of pulling you in within the first few pages. While this is part of a series, you can read it as a stand alone.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

In this split POV novel by Jennifer Sienes, Shadow Dancing follows the spiritually defeated Rebekah as she grieves for family loss and the end of her marriage. This wasn't what she expected from her life, or more accurately, from the God she'd followed for as long as she could remember. Moving in with Mama and Daddy solved her housing issues, but their strong faith and gentle reminders that God was in control weren't helping. The only thing that lifted the veil of depression for even a little bit was riding her horse, Siren.

Mitch had never been a believer and didn't pretend to be. Rebekah knew this about him before they ever married. Still, he'd admired his wife's faith--until it disappeared overnight. When tragedy struck their small family, she'd turned on God almost as fast as she turned on him, blaming them both for a hurt that would never heal. Still, Mitch loves Rebekah and will do whatever it takes to heal their broken relationship.

REVIEW for Celebrating Lit book tour:

Shadow Dancing is a compelling story that drips with pain yet continues to pull the reader in.

Rebekah’s life didn’t just go off the rails; it fell into a rocky gorge of white water. After leaving her husband of 15 years, she’s living with her parents and working two jobs to make ends meet. She can’t even think about her life with Mitch; because when she does, she remembers that it’s his fault her life is in shambles.

Mitch has never been a believer, and it’s been a bone of contention between him, Rebekah, and his in-laws. Still, they were good people; he admired their strength and respected their beliefs. So, when tragedy struck, he was hurt when she accused him of negligence but downright shocked when Rebekah blamed God. Mitch loves his wife and misses her terribly. He’s gotten to the point where he’s willing to try anything to win her back.

Shadow Dancing is one of those novels that feels so real you think you’re in real life rather than reading a book. It’s so good! This author, Jennifer Siene, is wonderful. She has a talent for taking hard topics and situations that we try to avoid in real life and putting them in a book. And not only does she put them in a book, but she does so with grace and knowledge that brings them to life.

I have read many of her books and each one has a really hard topic, from divorce to car accidents and brain injuries to death and losing our way. There are so many topics that others might shy away from that she tackles head-on!

“WADING THROUGH GRIEF WAS LIKE DANCING WITH SHADOWS
I loved this quote from the book and obviously where the book gets its name. It’s really so true. Grief is so hard. And it’s not just a one-and-done or an easy experience. It’s hard. It’s messy. And it can last years. But it’s how we deal with our grief and what we let it dictate about our lives that really needs to be talked about and this book does just that!

You’re going to love this book!

Marriage is never easy…
…But anything worth having is never easy.
It isn’t often that I pick up a book or this topic and end up ripping it apart to such an extreme that I never finish it. I didn’t have to do that with Shadow Dancing. And what a relief and joy it is.
I have said before of Jennifer Sienes books, that they are quickly becoming some of my favorites. Instead, she is one of my favorite writers. There hasn’t been one of her books that I have read that did not entertain, educate, and encourage me in some way. It is clear that she has either done her homework and taken the time to study or she has a lot of life experiences to share through her stories.
Shadow Dancing follows a married couple who has been hit with every parent’s nightmare. The loss of a child. The result is months of brokenness, questioning God, and heaps of avoidance tactics. Bekah and Mitch go through their individual journies of understanding through grief while trying to figure out what to do next. Ms. Sienes beautifully, and gutwrenchingly takes her readers on a journey through each stage of their grief while dropping powerful Truth nuggets through Bekah’s parents and Brother Paul. I found myself glued to every word, hoping that this couple would find their way through the fog (I won’t tell if they do or not).

When disaster strikes, Rebekah finds she is struggling with her faith. Separated from her husband, she is trying to decide what her next steps are for her life. Mitch wants to work through their troubles together but she is far from that idea. When a new disaster hits Rebekah’s family, they all expect her to crumble.

Having enjoyed all the books in the Bedford County Series, I was eager for this book to come out. Once again, I was not disappointed by my trip back to Bedford County. Each book deals with real life issues that readers can relate to. The characters aren’t perfect which makes the book even more relatable. The book does deal with loss of a child in a tragic situation, which might be a trigger for some readers. However, the story helps support healing after loss.

I loved Mitch’s journey through the book as well as other characters such as Kimberly. There were many aspects of the book that were interwoven to demonstrate how God works all things for our good. I also loved the dialogue from the characters to someone searching for answers. Another aspect I loved about the book is how some details were withheld from the reader. As the story progressed, more details came forward to help the reader understand more of the overall story.

I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Sometimes a book will unexpectedly surprise you on many levels. That’s what happened for me as I was reading this book. I was amazed at how well the author was able to convey a realistic depth and range of emotions all throughout the book. Additionally, by the time I reached the last chapter, I felt as if I had known these characters most of my life. The pacing of the storyline was great. The author allowed all the time needed at critical points to allow us to enter into the depth of the characters’ feelings and struggle. But even though there’s deep sorrow in this book, the author never lets us lose sight of the light and hope we find in Jesus. The dialogue between the characters was true to who they were—a faithful southern family trying to reconcile loss with faith.

The two main characters, Bekah and Mitch Casey, are struggling with an unthinkable tragedy. Because of Bekah’s unending deep sorrow, it’s separated them for a time. Walking through Bekah’s journey from despair to faith, and seeing Mitch consider redemption for the first time, made reading this book a journey of faith for me, too, as I considered the theme of God’s sovereignty in our lives.

Don’t miss this book. Besides being an absorbing, well-written story, it’s an encouraging lesson on trusting God in all circumstances of of lives.

I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Wow! This book was such a surprise. Having read the back cover copy, I thought the story might be good, but it would be heavy. I have to be in the right mood for overly heavy stories, those that don’t leave for hours after you’ve finished the last chapter. I thought I’d have to trudge through the story, through no fault of the author’s storytelling but because of the content. There is only so much I can take at a time.

This story did deal with extremely heavy life topics. Grief, loss, the breakdown of a marriage, testing of faith. Even the spiritual topics like God’s sovereignty are less than light. But the author does a wonderful job of keeping the style of the story conversational and real. She doesn’t veer away from the questions that need answers, but it doesn’t weigh down the story or the reader.

I don’t know if this was accomplished through the completely southern feel of the book and dialog, the characters who could be your next door neighbors, or the sprinklings of wisdom the main character’s mama and daddy add throughout the story. Whatever the reason, or maybe its all of this working together, the result is a beautiful story of life that keeps drawing you back in but doesn’t wear you out even with all the struggles it holds.

I give Shadow Dancing five stars. I’m so happy I chose this book, and I know you will be as well. I received an ARC of this book through Celebrate Lit. The reviews and opinions are my own and freely given.

MY REVIEW: I requested to read and review this book through Celebratelit. The opinions are my own. A positive review is not required.

So, with that out of the way I will tell you what I thought of the book. I enjoyed this book for the most part. The characters were believable and easy to relate to. The story flowed well and kept my interest throughout. The editing was well done with very few errors even though this was an ARC.

The story is Christian and shows the importance of leaning on God. It also skips back and forth between the two main characters. It's an easy transition.

What I did not like what the lack of proper grammar when the characters were speaking. I realize this is set in Tennessee and the author was trying to incorporate the drawl, but that did not excuse poor grammar. Things that just made them sound uneducated. I understand Southern drawl, I'm a Northern girl married to a Southern guy. All my inlaws speak with a pronounced southern accent but they use proper grammar. They have their sayings, as we all do, but that is not what I mean. It's things like using "them" instead of "those" for just one example.

Overall, I give this a 4 out of 5-star rating and I would recommend this to my friends.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Shadow Dancing by Jennifer Sienes follows the life of Bekah Casey and Mitch Casey. Bekah wants to trust God when things are going good, but when terrible trouble comes, She runs back home to mama and daddy. Until she has to make a decision as to which side she is going to choose. It’s not easy, it never is, but it has to be done.

This is a really good book to read. Author Jennifer Sienes writes a phenomenal story about love, faith and always having a forgiving spirit because there is always hope in Jesus. I enjoyed the characters, especially Bekah and Mitch, and their relationship. I think many of us are like Bekah, wanting to escape when life gets so hard. It seems so much easier, but in the end, it’s not and people get hurt.

I think this book would be perfect for those going through a difficult situation, or someone who likes a really good clean fiction with faith running through its characters. I’m giving Shadow Dancing Five Stars. I highly recommend this one to all ladies.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Author Jennifer Seines never disappoints. This author’s writing always moves me to tears and yet has me laughing a few pages later. I loved the spunky strong-willed heroine (Bekah), and the way Jennifer writes from a male’s point of view (Mitch) is second to none.
What a poignant real-to-life account of grief, loss, and faith under pressure and the choices made. I applaud this author for tackling difficult questions head on rather than leaving them in the shadows. What happens when we are disappointed in the sovereignty of God? Is it easier to walk away from God or walk toward Him in the midst of crisis? Does God still love us when we make huge mistakes?
Shadow Dancing is a perfect title for this story where Mitch and Bekah struggle in their marriage after losing their son. I was totally invested until that final page where all that is worth fighting for comes into focus. Having gone through trauma in my own marriage and surviving I found myself cheering them on…you can do this.
This realistic and heart-wrenching story written by a gifted author will stay with you long after that last page is read. That I can guarantee.
I am giving this book a well-deserved 5-star review.

I don't know where to start with my review. I think that anything I mention will not give justice to this amazing story. The way Author Jennifer share stories with us embraced with God's love for us and lessons to teach us or makes us stronger in our faith is outstanding.

Rebekah and Mitch's story is one to have a box of tissue near by because of the tears you will shed as you walk with them in their journey of loss, pain, and also learning to forgive others but most importantly forgive oneself. As well as the tears of hope, love and joy. I enjoy reading how the author combines the characters and story to situations that someone may not think of happening to someone and bring subjects that you start learning from in your own quiet time as you read and stop and think of your connection with God.

With characters that you cheer for from the start to characters that you feel somewhat connected to, this story is sure to bring you closer in your Faith and Strength you as you read it.

I received a e-ARC from the author. All stated here are my own personal thoughts.

Shadow Dancing by Jennifer Sienes is a work of Christian Women’s Fiction tied in with Southern fiction. Bekah Casey and Mitch Casey never expected to walk the painful path of losing a child. But, they find themselves on this path. As a Christian, Bekah finds herself in pain and unable to forgive her husband for the loss of a child. Living with her parents, she finds herself having to deal with the reality of her mother dying.

The two find themselves working through the pain of loss while learning to lean into God. Things held in get revealed. An orphan boy, horses, her family, and others around them help them to move forward.

In addition, the author illustrates how perceptions of others affect our ability to truly understand and appreciate those in our lives. This moving and inspirational story will draw you in and keep you reading.

So if you enjoy works of Christian Women’s Fiction and Southern Fiction, check out Shadow Dancing by Jennifer Sienes for yourself.

'Walking through the grief was like dancing with shadows.'

Author Jennifer Sienes understands the value of words and she knows how to plumb our emotions with those words. Shadow Dancing is the well-written story of a couple's worst nightmare, that of losing their son and then trying to figure out how to carry on. It's a powerful story and it made me wonder how I would deal with this loss. Would my trust in God be strong enough to carry me through? Would the marriage that I consider unshakable withstand the overwhelming pain and loss?

I love it when an author keeps me totally invested in the story that I'm reading, and Sienes definitely did this with this book. Shadow Dancing is a touching story of grief, loss, faith, and healing. I recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary Christian fiction.

This was a well written story about how different people handle grief and the healing that comes as we trust that God has a plan in place and things will work out as they should. I liked seeing the characters work through their grief and seeing how they grew through the experience. I liked how Mitch continued to love Bekah even when she wanted to run away and blame him for what had happened. I liked seeing his journey to God. I liked seeing the character growth for both Mitch and Bekah. I thought the author did a good job of showing how dealing with grief is a process and depending on how we face it will depend if we come out stronger or broken. I thought the story was well done with characters I could relate to.

This book is absolutely amazing! It’s so full of God’s redemptive power and forgiveness for self and others.
The amount of anger and unforgiveness Rebekah holds toward Mitch is so real and relatable as is Mitch’s understanding and long suffering towards Rebekah! It’s such a life lesson in just how easily we can allow these two emotions to control our every thought.
The ease with which this author brings such enormity to the teachings of God in these areas is mind blowing as well as the way she brings full circle God’s redeeming power.
This book spoke to the depths of my soul on so many levels and I’m so grateful to Jennifer Sienes for being the tool God used to touch me so deeply.
I was very gratefully given a complimentary copy by the author. My opinion is my own.

I am a huge fan of Jennifer Sienes and her style of writing to begin with, and this book was no exception. The places that this book and these characters took me will always be remembered. Maybe it’s because of the grief I’m walking through in my own life currently or because I have wrestled in the past with hurt (and anger) over why God allows certain things, this book shows me how much I’ve grown and who I used to be versus who I am today. My faith is much stronger in the God who can be trusted, but it took many trials (like Bekah and Mitch) to build and grow that faith. Wonderful book and definitely one that keeps me thinking long after the last page is read.

I adored the first book from Jennifer Sienes' The Bedford County Series, Night Songs. I was excited to have the opportunity to read the second installment, Shadow Dancing. I did not know it was possible, but I loved this book even more. I thought it was great. The author did a wonderful job brining out the emotions from the characters that made me feel connected to them. It was a beautiful story of love, hope and faith. I found it to be inspiring to read.

I am giving Shadow Dancing five stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading books that are clean romantic fiction. I am hoping there will be more books to come from The Bedford County Series.

I enjoyed reading the second Bedford County novel, Shadow Dancing. If you do not learn anything reading this novel, you will learn of the hope of those who know the Lord. Watching Bekah and Mitch transform reading this book was a joy to the heart. John, Anita and Brother Paul loved the Lord and gave me joy to listen to them talk. A good lesson to learn is to listen to God and not lose your relationship with him in times of trouble was taught throughout this novel. I recommend this book to young adult and older. I look forward to Jennifer Sienes next book.

This book was hard for me to read as it dealt with the grief of a mother losing her son. As I am stilling dealing with grief. I am glad I finished the book. This book clearly shows that healing and joy does come through the pain. The ending was so sweet. I think all readers would benefit from reading this book whether going through grief now or in the past.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

This one hooked me in early. May not be for all readers as it deals with a difficult subject The loss of a child sends this couple into a separation. One wants the other back, the other blames the spouse for the death of their boy. Many of my favorite elements are present in this book; faith in varying degrees. From strong and unshakable to pulling away after a tragedy and lack of belief yet drawn in due to that same loss.
This is book 2 in a series yet can be read as a stand alone.

Found a great author

I recently took a chance on reading my first book by this author. This is the second one I've read.
WOW! I'm really impressed by Ms. Sienes writing. Her books are right down where the rubber meets the road in the lives of Christians. Life is messy, but God is able to change our lives and bring us into his abundance if we are willing.
I look forward to reading more of her books

Shadow Dancing is the second book in the Bedford County series by Jennifer Sienes. This is a well written story that is easy to read and imagine. The story does have some sad moments with death of child and mother and a struggling marriage. Bekah and Mitch lost their only son a year prior and Bekah has blamed Mitch for the loss and moved home to her parents. She is working two jobs to try to support herself and not use the money Mitch gives her. Her life takes a drastic change when her mother is diagnosed with cancer and chooses to not take treatment. With the family’s help she cares for her mother.

I enjoyed reading this story, even when her mother is so ill she takes time to talk with Bekah about trying to heal herself from the grief and heal her marriage. I appreciate the strong faith her mother has and how her unsaved husband secretly turns to her father to help him with his Christian walk. I so enjoyed the healing that takes place in the story and second chances Bekah and Mitch are offered to be a family. God’s timing is so perfect.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

Love this series!

Rebecka and Mitch have gone through some monstrous losses. Becka was born and raised a Christian but Mitch isn’t a believer. Will Becka’s faith see her through? Is the power of God stronger than the pull of this world? I recommend this book.
