Betrayed and hunted, a reluctant heir to a dying kingdom must embrace the fire in his blood and claim a legendary weapon before predators and ancient gods plunge the world into darkness.

When ruthless invaders descend upon his city and something long-buried stirs beneath the streets, Asher’s life is shattered. Forced into exile and pursued by enemies at every turn, he must gather scattered allies and confront the primal forces rising to consume the land.

But in a realm where loyalty shifts like the wind and predator lords scheme in the shadows, survival demands sacrifice. A lost relic bound to his bloodline holds the key to uniting his people — though seizing it may cost him everything.

As ancient powers awaken and old feuds reignite, the line between friend and foe blurs. The fate of the realm hangs by a thread, and only those who dare to defy the darkness will endure.

This was a really enjoyable and slightly unexpected fantasy read. It blends classic animal fantasy vibes with a more thoughtful take on morality and leadership, which made it stand out for me.

The story follows Asher, a young prince suddenly forced into a position of power after his father’s death. What I liked most here was his character growth. He doesn’t instantly become a perfect leader, he struggles, makes mistakes, and questions himself. That journey felt natural and believable, and it was easy to root for him.

The world is populated by anthropomorphic animals, but what makes it interesting is that the story avoids simple “good species vs bad species” tropes. Instead, it focuses on choices. Anyone can be good or cruel depending on their actions. It also touches on some darker or more uncomfortable questions, which adds a bit more depth to the story.

The pacing is quite fast, which makes it an easy and engaging read. There are a few twists along the way, enough to keep things interesting without overcomplicating the plot. The supporting characters, especially Cara, add a nice dynamic, though I’d love to see more development for some of them in future books.

One small thing that held it back slightly for me was immersion. At times, I found it a bit tricky to fully picture the characters in their animal forms, which created a slight disconnect early on. It didn’t take away from the story overall, but it did affect my experience a little.

Still, this is a strong start to a series, with plenty of potential for deeper world-building and character development in future instalments.

Verdict: A fast-paced and thoughtful animal fantasy with great character growth and solid themes, an enjoyable start to a promising series.

A big thank you to the author for reaching out and offering me a free ebook in exchange for a review. I really appreciate the opportunity.

So, are you one of those people who read Redwall and got inspired and uplifted and loved the classic good vs. evil struggle? And then read Watership Down and while you loved it was also a little bit traumatized because maybe you were still a tad young for it?

Well this one sits nicely in the middle 😂

I really enjoyed that this book didn’t hold back from really diving in to what good and evil look like and how they are choices each of our characters has to make that shapes them. It isn’t predator vs. prey because every group has the capacity to make good or bad decisions. It also means that it tackles the whole question of what do the predators eat when the animals are sentient… 😬

Our MC is Asher and he’s a great voice to follow. I always appreciate it when a character goes through actual growth and Asher is thrust into growth big time. He fumbles sometimes but deep down his good heart always prevails.

I’m interested in more of the world building and history (which I assume we’ll get more if in future books) because I feel like any of my questions about how it all works all have answers. And I want them!

All in all, this was a solid start to what I hope will be many more books to come!

Thanks to the author for providing the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Asher is a young prince, who'd rather spends his days away from court. When a group of religious zealots attacks and wants to take over the Rabetthi Kingdom, he suddenly sees himself king after the murder of his father. He himself needs to flee, and he manages to escape with the help of Vulpen Cara.

Asher is unsure about his new position, and it is incredibly fun to see his character growth from someone who's hesitant to be king, to a thoughtful leader. I loved his interactions and growing bond with Cara. There is a softness in their friendship that resonates off the pages.

The writing was very compelling. It is easy to imagine yourself walking in the world. I completely agree that Sanderson fans would enjoy this story too. It's high fantasy, with high stakes, but at the same time incredibly enjoyable for those just dipping their toes into fantasy books.

There is a lot at stake, and the story has just begun. I can't wait to read the next book and see what will be in store for Asher and Cara.

I'd recommend this book to everyone who loves rich fantasy worlds, high stakes, political unrest, old rivalries and lovely heroes

This is an ARC review. Thank you to the author, Jamie Roe, for a copy of his book.

The story of The King's Bow follows Asher, a prince who is quickly made king when his father is murdered. Asher is forced to flee and his rescuer, Cara, seems to good to be true.

Asher spends a large majority of the story overcoming his insecurities, learning who he can trust and growing as a person and as a leader. The character development and growth of Asher throughout this story was very well written and it was enjoyable to watch the reluctant king step into his power and approach leadership in a thoughtful and humble manner. The side characters of Cara and Luce are also well written although I would have loved more of Asher and Luce (I suspect we will get more of these two in the subsequent books!).

The storyline has a few twists, a couple expected and couple unexpected. The pace of the story is quickly paced and starts off with suspense right away. The story moved quickly and this was a quick read for me. We

This is a high fantasy book and the main characters are animals (rabbits, foxes, etc.). I will admit, I often just envisioned Asher as a human man with rabbit ears and a tail. Zero problems with the other characters and I could imagine what they looked like but Asher, he was human to me for most of the story. This didn't impact my appreciation for the story however.

This was a fun read and though it is high fantasy, I believe someone looking to get into fantasty would enjoy the story and be able to follow it.

5 🌮's! I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to the rest of the series! It's a unique concept and idea and I appreciated a break from Fae romantasy novels!

A rare gem in modern fantasy, this book excels in both storytelling and originality. The world of Tamuz is richly imagined, brimming with political unrest, ancient rivalries, and deeply rooted mythology. Asher’s transformation from a disillusioned vegetarian to a leader bearing the weight of divine consequence is both touching and complex. The writing balances introspective character work with high-stakes action, never letting one overpower the other. What makes this book stand out is its refusal to pander, there are no easy answers, and the stakes are earned. Fans of Brian Jacques and Sanderson alike will find themselves deeply satisfied.

I wasn't a massive reader before picking this up, other than a few star wars books, but I found myself engrossed in this and it actually made me buy a kindle and get into reading as a hobby

I really enjoyed the story and world building I found it easy imagine the set pieces without having it tediously described leaving my imagination to embellish it further

I loved the characters and how gory some of the chapters were because of the rats

I'm very excited for the author to write a sequel so I can follow Asher on his journey

I'm really excited to hear how Asher's story progresses

I loved this! Set in the world with wonderful creative and distinct animal cultures, we get a wonderful fantasy romp with twists and turns along the way.

I loved all the details about the cultures we only glimpsed, or only heard about. I am absolutely left wanting more. The story demands a sequel, there is so much of the map left to see, and several characters with interesting set ups that I want to know so much more about.

I look forward to more!

I’m going to admit, I’m not sure what I was expecting. I had a conversation with a friend who said it reminded them of “Rocket”, from Guardians of the Galaxy. So with an open mind and with some in trepidation I opened the kindle….

In "The King's Bow," the author crafts a captivating tale that plunges us into the vibrant yet perilous world of Tamuz. With its rich tapestry of anthropomorphic characters and high stakes, the story revolves around Asher, a reluctant character who must step up in the face of dire circumstances.

Asher's journey from a carefree vegetarian to a potential king is filled with growth/self discovery and danger! The author explores themes of responsibility, leadership, and the complexities of loyalty. The contrasting dynamics between Asher and Cara, the skilled agent from the Vulpen Queendom, is rather vast, that brings tension, but as they begin to cooperate, they have a better understanding of one another.

The story is rich with descriptions that almost make you wish you were there. The landscapes are rich and detailed, the scenes are so lifelike that I had to blink twice in order for me to realise I’m in the chair at home, and not in the village/battleground or anywhere near Tamuz!

The high priestess with her own agenda adds an intriguing layer to the story, heightening the stakes as Asher races against time to secure the ancient weapon. You get the feeling that she’s either hiding something, or she has her own agenda! 🤔

The plot twists are good, just enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. The realization that the quest for the artefact is just the beginning of Asher’s challenges keeps the story from getting too boring, and the looming threat of a darker force adds an sinister undertone, making Asher fully aware of the consequences that will come if he fails!

I still kept expecting the characters to “shift” into humans! So for me, it took a little longer to connect with the characters.

The author creates a world where friendships, betrayals, and the burden of leadership collide, making this an interesting read.

I am wondering where the next book will take us.
